Chapter 128: Scald Injury
The villa was warmly decorated, and under the soft glow of the light, Song Qingwan looked even more charming and beautiful. Zhao Dong walked in and gave the place a quick scan. Everything seemed to be in order.
At that moment, a hint of nervousness appeared on Song Qingwan's face as she whispered, "Zhao Dong, could you help me check all the rooms?"
Zhao Dong nodded. "No problem, it's a small thing."
With that, he began to methodically inspect each room. Song Qingwan followed close behind, her lovely face etched with nervous tension.
He checked the entire ground floor, even looking inside the cabinets, but found nothing out of the ordinary. Song Qingwan breathed a faint sigh of relief and thanked him.
Zhao Dong pointed upstairs. "Should I check the second floor?"
Song Qingwan nodded, smiling with some embarrassment. "If you don't mind. I'm so sorry to trouble you this late and disturb your rest."
"It's no trouble."
Zhao Dong ascended the stairs with Song Qingwan right behind him. The second floor was pitch-black. Zhao Dong switched on the light, revealing a somewhat empty space.
He went to a room on the left, flipped on the light, and raised an eyebrow. "Does someone else live here?"
Song Qingwan smiled. "My younger sister lives here too."
Zhao Dong recalled Yang Sixue mentioning this before, so he didn't press for details. It was obviously a young woman's room, neatly arranged with books, a schoolbag, and items like a piano and a guitar.
He glanced at a photo on the wall. The girl in the picture was stunning. She had a classical oval face, delicate lips, and exquisite features, just like Song Qingwan, though the girl in the photo appeared even more pure and lovely. With long, flowing hair and a tall figure, she had the air of a goddess.
Zhao Dong praised sincerely, "You're definitely sisters. Your sister is very beautiful."
Song Qingwan smiled. "Of course. She has a lot of suitors at school."
"Where does she go to school?"
"East Sea University."
"East Sea University?"
Zhao Dong was slightly surprised, since Zhao Qirou also went there, but he said no more.
They soon closed the door, and Song Qingwan led him to another room. It was a guest room that was usually unoccupied. As they reached the door, Song Qingwan's nervousness clearly returned. "Zhao Dong," she said softly, "this room needs a very thorough check. No one ever stays in here, and it's right next to the road. If an intruder got in, they would most likely come through here."
Zhao Dong nodded. Song Qingwan turned the doorknob. The moment she pushed the door open, a dark shadow flashed past!
Song Qingwan froze, her breath catching in her throat and her mind going blank. Without a second thought, she threw herself into Zhao Dong's arms, crying out in terror, "Zhao Dong, there's something in there!"
Zhao Dong's pupils constricted and his muscles tensed. He immediately flicked on the light.
"Who's there?!"
When the light flooded the room, however, there was no person to be seen. Instead, an owl was perched on the windowsill, flapping its wings.
Zhao Dong let out a breath of relief. "It's alright. It's not a person, it's just a bird."
Song Qingwan blinked, her eyes falling on the owl. She flushed with embarrassment. "Oh... I'm so sorry."
Zhao Dong coughed twice. "It's fine. You... can stand up straight now."
Only then did it dawn on Song Qingwan that she was still clinging tightly to Zhao Dong. She had been so terrified that she had lunged into his arms without thinking.
As the realization hit her, Song Qingwan let go as if she'd received an electric shock. She stumbled backward, both ashamed and flustered. "I'm so sorry! I... I didn't realize."
"It's nothing."
Zhao Dong rubbed his nose and resumed his check, heading into Song Qingwan's bedroom. Her bedroom was decorated in a very comforting minimalist style. After looking around, Zhao Dong opened the closet and was met with the sight of Song Qingwan's bras and other personal items...
In an instant, Zhao Dong flushed and quickly shut the closet doors.
Song Qingwan realized what he had seen, and her own face began to burn.
By tacit agreement, neither of them mentioned the awkward moment. After finishing the inspection, they went back down to the living room.
"Everything looks clear," Zhao Dong said. "It's getting late, so I should get going."
Song Qingwan bit her lip, feeling a little guilty. "Please, have a cup of tea before you go. You came all this way and helped me so much today. I can't let you leave without at least offering you a drink."
Zhao Dong smiled. "Alright then. Thank you."
"It's no trouble at all. Please, have a seat."
Song Qingwan went to the kitchen to prepare the tea while Zhao Dong sat down on the living room sofa. As he watched her in the kitchen, he felt a sense of disbelief.
I can't believe this. A top star in all of China, the ice-queen goddess of countless fans, is actually making tea for me! A month ago, there was no way my life would ever intersect with someone like her. I was just an ordinary guy, while she was a household name, a superstar. Under normal circumstances, our paths would have never crossed. Yet, in just one short month, my life has been turned upside down. First, there was Lin Qingyun, then Xu Yafei, followed by Jiang Nianyu, Wu Tingyu, Ji Xueyao, and Han Chuxue. Every single one of them is the best of the best, a goddess in her own right, not to mention their incredible backgrounds. Wu Tingyu is the daughter of the president of East Sea Bank, Ji Xueyao is the daughter of one of the biggest real estate developers in East Sea, and as for Han Chuxue... there's no need to even go there. Is this my luck finally starting to turn?
Soon, the tea was ready. Song Qingwan had taken off her high heels and changed into a pair of simple white cotton slippers for wearing around the house. She had also tied up her hair, looking simple and gentle.
As she approached with the teapot, Zhao Dong glanced at her, and his heart skipped a beat.
"Sorry to keep you waiting."
Song Qingwan offered a faint smile. As she began to pour him a cup, he quickly reached for the teapot. "It's okay, I can get it."
"You're the guest, allow me."
Song Qingwan gently took it back, but her hand trembled. A splash of hot water spilled out, landing right on Zhao Dong's clothes.
Zhao Dong hissed in pain. Though his shirt took the brunt of it, the hot water still scalded him.
Panicked, Song Qingwan quickly set down the teapot and grabbed a handful of tissues to wipe the spill. After a couple of dabs, she realized with a jolt that the spot she was wiping was...
Zhao Dong froze, staring at her. When she saw his expression, her mind went completely blank. A split second later, a deep blush flooded her face. She felt like crying but couldn't shed a tear.
"I... I didn't do it on purpose..."
Zhao Dong forced a smile. "It's alright, I can handle it. Please, sit down."
Song Qingwan glanced at his shirt, which was soaked through. Realizing the water had just been boiled, she was overcome with guilt and self-blame. "I'm so sorry, Zhao Dong. I... I'm so clumsy. Are you okay? Is it a bad burn?"
Zhao Dong gritted his teeth. "Uh, do you have any ice water? Or just some ice?"
"Yes, yes!"
Song Qingwan immediately rushed to the refrigerator and came back with some ice water. Zhao Dong took it and pressed the cold container against his leg and stomach. The water had been scalding hot. Fortunately, his body was much more resilient now. He could withstand the heat, and though the area was slightly swollen, it would heal quickly. An ordinary person would have been in agony, and that patch of skin would have been severely burned.
Seeing him like this, Song Qingwan was filled with remorse. "Zhao Dong, I'm truly sorry. I... I really didn't mean to." Full of self-reproach, she bit her lip and said, "I'll go get some burn cream."
She quickly returned with a tube of ointment.
Zhao Dong smiled. "It's fine. I'm tough-skinned, I can take it. It doesn't need cream."
"No! Of course not! Let me apply it for you!"
Zhao Dong was taken aback. "I should probably do it myself," he said quickly.
Song Qingwan sighed. "Are you still angry with me?"
Zhao Dong shook his head. "Don't overthink it. It's just easier for me to do it myself."
"If you're not angry with me, then please let me help you. I've already troubled you so much today, and now I've burned you... I... I feel terrible."
Feeling helpless and seeing how genuinely guilty she was, Zhao Dong relented and slightly lifted his shirt. The fabric on his upper body was soaked, and a large area had been scalded.
When Zhao Dong lifted his shirt, his well-defined abs were revealed.
Song Qingwan bit her lip, a flicker of shyness in her eyes. Resisting the urge to look away, she said, "I'll apply it for you. Don't move."
"Okay..."
Taking a deep breath, Song Qingwan sat down beside him and began to gently apply the cream with a cotton swab. Looking at Zhao Dong's toned body and his defined abs, she found it difficult to keep her mind from wandering. Too embarrassed to look him in the eye, she had to lower her gaze, her cheeks flushed with shyness.
Her fingers brushed against his abs by accident, and a shiver ran through her. An indescribable sensation surged through her body.
Watching Song Qingwan with her head bowed, Zhao Dong also felt a bit awkward. After all, this position... it's a little too intimate!
Soon, Song Qingwan finished. She glanced at him, her face crimson, and bit her lip. "Um... your shirt is all wet. Why don't you take it off? I have some T-shirts you can borrow."
Zhao Dong paused for a moment. The wet shirt was indeed uncomfortable, so he nodded.
As Zhao Dong peeled off the wet shirt, his lean, muscular physique was fully revealed—broad shoulders tapering down to a narrow waist, a classic V-shape.
Song Qingwan bit her lip hard and took a long look at him before getting up to find a clean shirt.
Just then, the sound of a key turning in the front door's lock echoed from downstairs. A moment later, a figure stepped inside.
