Chapter 73: Misunderstandings of the Past
Wang Han was wearing a black tank top, a white miniskirt, and a pair of black leather boots. Her long hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her delicate features complemented her beautiful, oval-shaped face.
However, her brows were knitted together, and her beautiful face wore a cold expression.
This sparked a sudden wave of disgust in Zhao Dong. He looked at Wang Han and said coldly, "If you have something to say, say it."
Wang Han stomped her foot in anger. "Zhao Dong, who gave you the right to talk to me like that? What are you so arrogant about? You're just a veteran, a broke nobody. Know your place!"
Zhao Dong gave her a look, said nothing more, and turned to walk into the courtyard. He had no desire whatsoever to interact with her.
This only made Wang Han angrier. "Zhao Dong, you stop right there!" she yelled.
Zhao Dong had already entered the small courtyard, but Wang Han stubbornly followed him in. Inside, Zhao Kangyou and Zhang Cuimei were looking worried. Zhao Dong hadn't come home for two days or answered his phone. Combined with Lin Qingyun's strange behavior before, the old couple had been consumed with anxiety.
The moment they saw Zhao Dong, their worried frowns vanished. Zhang Cuimei rushed over, her voice filled with relief. "Xiao Dong, you're finally back! Where have you been these past few days? You didn't even tell us."
Zhao Dong looked at his parents. Remembering how close he had come to death, he grasped Zhang Cuimei's hand, and his eyes couldn't help but sting with tears. "Dad, Mom, I'm sorry I made you worry..."
Zhao Kangyou smiled kindly. "It's good that you're back. That's all that matters..."
Just then, Wang Han came storming over. The old couple finally noticed her, and their expressions immediately stiffened.
The relationship between the two families had soured, and Wang Han rarely spoke to them anymore. Her sudden appearance made the situation awkward for everyone.
Despite the tension, Zhang Cuimei spoke first. "Xiao Han, what brings you here?"
Wang Han glanced at Zhang Cuimei and Zhao Kangyou before glaring at Zhao Dong. "You should ask your son what he's done."
Zhang Cuimei and Zhao Kangyou exchanged a look. They already knew that Zhao Dong had beaten up Wang Han's boyfriend, Zhou Chongming.
Since it was a matter between the younger generation, they didn't plan to interfere. After a moment's thought, Zhang Cuimei said, "Xiao Han, your aunt and I already know. We scolded Zhao Dong for hitting your boyfriend, Zhou Chongming. Please don't hold it against him. He was just worried about you and trying to help..."
"I don't need his concern!" Wang Han retorted instantly. "Helping? He just made things worse! Who is he to meddle in my relationship with Chongming? He's just obsessed with me! I came here to tell you all that even if our families talked about a childhood engagement, it was just a joke! You people should know your place."
The wrinkles on Zhao Kangyou's face tightened. Zhang Cuimei lowered her head, her expression pained and sorrowful.
Zhao Dong, who had been watching from the side, frowned. "Are you done? If you've said your piece, then get lost. No one's interested in you, and no one gives a damn about some stupid childhood engagement. You think way too highly of yourself."
Wang Han was stunned for a second before flying into a humiliated rage. "Zhao Dong, can you stop pretending? It's disgusting to watch! You dare say you don't think about it? Don't think I don't see through your little act. You're just trying to show off, thinking I'll fall for you? Hah! Impossible! You should take a good look at yourself. You're just a broke loser. My family's net worth is seven or eight million. What about yours? Hah!"
Zhao Kangyou and Zhang Cuimei remained silent, but that didn't mean they were unaffected. The old couple felt a deep sense of unease. It was true that their families had once agreed to an engagement, and the two children had been very close. But now, their family couldn't even hold a candle to Wang Han's, and their son was being looked down upon so harshly. A pang of heartbreak mixed with profound guilt settled in their hearts. Zhao Kangyou took a long drag from his rustic pipe, his face a mask of weariness and sorrow...
Zhao Dong, however, felt nothing. To him, Wang Han's words were utterly laughable.
Seven or eight million in assets? The number was a complete joke. He was currently carrying nearly ten million in cash, not to mention the card from the Han Family. Furthermore, he now owned half the assets of the Zhang Family. The Zhangs were one of the Four Great Families of East Sea, a financial conglomerate with assets worth tens of billions, and half of it was his. Most importantly, he was a cultivator, and cultivators could make money at a terrifying speed. If he wanted to, he could easily earn tens or hundreds of millions. He had billions, while her family had a meager few million.
In that moment, Wang Han looked like nothing more than a clown in his eyes. He couldn't even be bothered to argue with her.
Looking at Wang Han, Zhao Dong finally uttered a single word:
"Clown."
Wang Han froze, and a second later, her face flushed with rage. "Zhao Dong, what did you just say?"
Zhao Dong shook his head. "You really are a clown. I can't believe you've turned into this kind of person after all these years. It's pathetic, really."
Wang Han was so angry she was momentarily speechless. She pointed a trembling finger at Zhao Dong. "You—you bastard! You're the clown!"
Zhao Dong shook his head again, ignoring her completely. He turned to his parents and said, "Dad, Mom, let's go inside. We shouldn't bother with a madwoman like her."
Wang Han was so furious she felt her vision go dark and nearly fainted. Just as she was about to retort, her phone rang. Seeing it was a call from her father, Wang Jianguo, she answered, "Hello, Dad? What is it?"
