Chapter 396 - 396: The Missing Clue
In a city as vast as Zaun, finding people among all the gangs who matched the description was not actually difficult.
After all, even if the gangs did not know one another inside and out, they still understood each other to a certain degree. Everyone had a sense of who was strong in each gang, what their personality was like, what kind of temper they had, and what sort of things they might do.
Based on what Caitlyn had discovered while investigating the first crime scene, the killer and the victims had first encountered each other in one of the Gray Lanes.
The victim named Dack had fired three shots first, and all three had hit. That was why bloodstains had been left on the ground.
In other words, after finding people who matched the description, they still needed to check whether those people had any wounds on their bodies.
Just like that, the entire day passed, but the final result was far from ideal.
"Are you sure the killer was shot?"
The two of them sat behind a tavern table to rest, and Vi spoke up.
"Based on the environment, that is the only conclusion. Unless he shot himself, those three bullets definitely hit."
Caitlyn's tone was certain. "I grew up handling guns, which is why I'm so sure."
Vi listened and nodded, falling into thought.
She naturally believed Caitlyn. In other words, the killer definitely had gunshot wounds on his body.
However, the people they had found today basically had no injuries. Even when they did, they were not gunshot wounds.
And after learning the situation, the gang leaders behind these people had repeatedly assured her that they were absolutely not the ones playing dirty behind the scenes.
Seeing her thinking, Caitlyn said, "That means the person who did it may not be a gang member."
Vi could not help sighing. "If that's the case, finding the killer is no different from looking for a needle in a haystack."
If it had not been one of the gangs but an independent operator, then the situation would become very troublesome.
After all, Zaun was no small city. It held people from all over the world, and new faces appeared every day. Finding a killer in a city like this was no different from finding a needle in a haystack.
Of course, there was another possibility.
A hidden force could be lurking in the shadows, like Carroll last time.
There were too many ambitious people, and too many people hiding quietly. It was truly hard to guess who had made a move.
"Anyway, thanks for your help today."
Vi sighed again and raised a hand to scratch her hair. "We'll deal with the rest tomorrow. Today's commotion was pretty big. I believe it should serve as a warning to those people."
Now all the gangs in Zaun knew she was looking for some underhanded bastard. No matter what, that should at least make the person behind this a little more cautious.
"Mm." Caitlyn nodded. She opened her mouth, wanting to say something.
But in the end, she could not say it. Judging from the traces she had observed at the scenes today, she kept feeling that something was wrong.
But as for what exactly was wrong, it was stuck in her throat, and she could not put it into words.
"Come on. I'll take you back."
Vi stood up and stretched lazily, preparing to escort Caitlyn back to the upper city.
She could also stop by the prince's place and mooch a meal.
Thinking that way, her mood improved quite a bit.
For Zaun, people dying was practically an everyday occurrence.
It could even become after-dinner conversation.
"Did you hear about what happened with the Gray Nails and the Hamrat Gang today?"
"Of course. I heard four people died, and they didn't even find the bodies."
"I even went to the scene to take a look. The bloodstains on the ground were still there, though they'd already dried."
"Did they find the killer?"
"No. Vi's been sending people out looking all day."
"She just made a name for herself, and now something like this happens under her watch. Is someone messing with her?"
"No idea."
Two unimportant members of the gangs were sitting on crates by the roadside, chatting idly.
At that moment, a figure appeared behind them and said coldly, "Did you finish what I told you to do?"
The two of them hurriedly turned around. One of them gave an embarrassed smile. "Boss, we were just about to do it. We were only taking a quick break."
The man still wore a cold expression. "If you've rested enough, get moving."
"Yes, yes."
The two answered at once and hurried off toward a certain place.
Only after they had walked some distance away did they begin whispering.
"So what if he modified a few parts? What's he so smug about?"
"Stop talking. Be careful he doesn't hear you."
"So what if he hears? I'll still say it. Everyone knows Vandy was a nobody back then. Isn't he just relying on his modified body? I heard the money he used to modify himself..."
"Shh. Enough. Say less."
"No, I'm going to say it. I heard the money he used for his body modifications came from robbing some rich family. As the saying goes, take the money, not the life. But he took the money and didn't spare their lives either."
"That's true. Someone like that will get what's coming to him sooner or later."
The two whispered as they walked farther away.
Meanwhile, on the other side, the minor boss named Vandy walked into an alley with a cold expression.
Thin mist drifted around him. Not a single person could be seen, and the empty alley echoed only with his footsteps.
Suddenly, up ahead on the road, a pair of red eyes abruptly lit up, gleaming with an eerie glow, accompanied by a burst of beastlike breathing.
Vandy stopped walking, his whole body becoming alert. He asked coldly, "Who's there?"
The figure did not answer. It merely moved forward. When it walked out of the mist, Vandy's pupils shrank, and he immediately drew the weapon he carried.
But in the next second, that half-human, half-wolf monster had already pounced in front of him. Its face was savage as it raised its sharp claws and swung down.
Vandy lifted his modified right arm to block, but the next second, his weapon was knocked flying, and his right arm was forcibly torn off.
Immediately afterward, his whole body was tackled to the ground, leaving him face-to-face with that monstrous face.
Seeing the humanity flickering in its eyes, Vandy asked in fear and despair, "Who sent you? Why are you killing me?"
"Because I smelled it on you... the stench of blood."
Warwick's scarlet eyes stared at Vandy, his voice like a vengeful ghost come to claim a life.
He was not sure whether he was human or ghost, but that did not matter.
What mattered was that he still had the ability to hunt down those who had committed sins.
And Singed!
"Where is Singed..."
As hatred surged, the chemical pump on Warwick's body began injecting fury. He desperately resisted the consciousness that was about to slip out of control and asked in a hoarse voice.
Vandy felt the werewolf's claws pressing against his body, growing stronger and stronger. Terrified, he kept shaking his head. "I don't know... Who is Singed? Who the hell is that?"
But what answered him was a pair of scarlet eyes that had already fallen into madness.
The next day.
Vi was woken by a burst of violent knocking.
After getting dressed, she immediately went to open the door.
The person knocking was Enrico. He said with a grave expression, "Another four people disappeared yesterday. One of them was a minor boss from the Black Dog Gang. The other three were from different gangs."
Hearing this, Vi instantly felt wide awake. Her expression changed. After putting on her gauntlets, she immediately went out.
She had not expected that after just one night, another four people would go missing.
And by missing, they were very likely already dead.
Not long after leaving, she ran into Caitlyn, who had come alone.
After seeing Vi, Caitlyn said, "I had a feeling yesterday's matter wasn't over, so I came early today."
When Vi saw her, she had no time for greetings and nodded. "Your instincts were right. Four more people disappeared last night. I'm on my way to the scene now."
Hearing that, Caitlyn's eyes narrowed slightly as well.
The group quickly arrived at one of the scenes.
The missing person here was named Vandy, a minor boss of the Black Dog Gang.
Vi even knew this person. Before she had gone to prison, Vandy had only been a small-time thug under the Black Dog Gang, and he had not been particularly strong either.
After she came back, Vandy had already climbed his way up to becoming a minor boss.
Apparently, he had undergone body modifications, and his strength had improved by leaps and bounds.
At the scene, in addition to a group of Black Dog Gang members, the Black Dog Gang's leader Quentin was also there. Beside him was a dispirited black dog lying listlessly on the ground.
Raising black dogs was what the Black Dog Gang was known for, though usually only people at the level of minor boss or above kept them.
When Quentin saw Vi, he said directly, "Vandy is probably dead. I haven't touched the scene either. Go take a look."
Vi noticed the listless black dog nearby and asked, "You didn't have it try to find who did it?"
"I did. Tom is famous for having a good nose. But after it circled the scene today, it ended up like this."
Quentin also sounded a little puzzled.
Caitlyn observed it and said, "It looks like it got scared."
Seeing Vi, Quentin, and some of the people around them look over at her, she explained, "In the wild, many beasts use scent to identify targets. When some weaker beasts smell the scent of a powerful beast, they either become so frightened they can't move, or they turn and run away."
She had years of experience hunting in the wild, so she knew a certain amount about this.
She found that this black dog looked very much like it had been frightened.
Frightened by the "killer's" scent?
That struck Caitlyn as strange, and she could not help thinking about it.
After the people beside her heard the explanation, they also seemed to understand somewhat.
Quentin said in surprise, "Tom is usually afraid of nothing. He even dares to bite me. And now a smell scared him like this?"
"It may be rather unusual. I'll look at the scene first."
Caitlyn did not know how to put it, so she walked toward the scene.
Here, the most conspicuous thing was a severed mechanical arm. Judging from the traces at the connection point, it looked as if it had been forcibly torn off.
There was also a large pool of blood on the ground, indicating that the deceased had likely died quite miserably.
In the end, the body should have been taken away. The trail of blood disappeared after reaching a certain point, making it difficult to track.
Judging by the method, they could confirm that the killer was the same person.
"Two of my men saw Vandy last night," Quentin said at this time. "Around one or two o'clock, I think. When they left, Vandy was still fine."
Vi looked at the two underlings and asked, "Did you see anyone suspicious?"
The two underlings were a little panicked as well. They had not expected Vandy to die right after they had been chatting about him last night.
"We don't know anything..."
"Vandy told us to go do something, so we left."
"We didn't see anyone suspicious nearby either, and we didn't hear any sounds of fighting."
The two of them gave a rough account of last night's situation, one sentence at a time.
They could not provide much useful information.
After Caitlyn listened, she asked, "Where did you part ways with Vandy last night?"
Hearing this, one of the underlings said, "Just two alleys over. Not far."
"Then that means Vandy may have run into the killer after parting ways with you."
Caitlyn glanced at the scene and analyzed, "There are no signs that he lingered in the alley. How strong was this man?"
Quentin thought for a moment, then said, "So-so. He modified his arm, so he was a little stronger than a normal person."
"Judging from the scene, he fell almost without resisting."
Caitlyn's brows furrowed slightly. Next, she and Vi went to investigate the other three scenes.
After finishing the investigations, her brows drew tighter and tighter.
She realized that the killer this time was probably not simple.
First, he was definitely very strong, so strong that Vandy had no time to run.
And he had attacked four times in a row in a single night without being discovered on the spot.
Second, he moved very quickly. After committing the crimes, he took the bodies away and still went unnoticed.
"He killed eight people across two consecutive nights and took the bodies with him. There is a strong possibility that the culprit is a psychopathic serial killer."
Sitting in front of a table, Caitlyn analyzed the situation with Vi. "Judging from the traces of his attacks, he first confirms his target, waits until the target reaches a sparsely populated place, and then strikes immediately."
After listening, Vi frowned as well. "You're saying this might not be a gang targeting me?"
"That's possible." Caitlyn nodded. "He may only be acting out of some twisted urge to kill."
"Then this guy really is messed up. He killed eight people across two nights." Vi could not help making a comment. "And he took the bodies away too. What does he want the bodies for?"
"Perhaps he's treating those bodies as trophies and taking them back to his lair."
Caitlyn thought for a moment. Seeing Vi look at her, she added, "In the wild, after animals finish hunting, they usually take their prey back to eat it."
"Uh... stop. I'm getting a little nauseous."
Vi tried imagining it, and her face turned pale.
"In any case, this killer must be caught. Otherwise, I suspect he will strike again tonight. And he is not weak. This kind of psychopathic killer is usually very cunning. The longer we tangle with him, the more passive we become."
A sharp gleam flashed in Caitlyn's eyes.
Vi also nodded with a grave expression. After a long moment, she sighed again. "But how are we supposed to catch him? Right now, he's in the dark, and we're in the open. We don't even know what he looks like, or whether he's a man or a woman."
"I know this is difficult."
Instead, Caitlyn's desire for a challenge was stirred. She stood up. "I'm going back to look again and see if we missed any clues. Maybe the place we overlooked is the key to solving the case."
Vi nodded and stood up as well, her fighting spirit rising. "All right!"
The two returned to the first scene.
That was where the two Gray Nails underlings had died.
Because of what had happened over the past two days, very few people came here, and the scene had basically not been disturbed.
Caitlyn began investigating the scene again, this time refusing to let any corner slip by.
However, repeating the process from last time clearly still yielded nothing.
So she stood at the scene, lost in thought.
Her gaze swept over everything again and again. Suddenly, beside a trash can, she spotted a paper bag.
It leaned there inconspicuously, as if it were garbage that had been casually thrown away.
Caitlyn walked over, picked up the paper bag without minding the dirt, and found that there was nothing inside. But it made her sink into thought.
A detective book she had once read described that one must never overlook any detail at a crime scene.
Perhaps any unremarkable detail could be the key to solving the case.
"What did you find?"
Vi walked over and asked.
"I don't know what this bag used to hold, but judging from the cut, it was sliced open with a knife. It's not that dirty, which means it was thrown here fairly recently."
As Caitlyn analyzed on her own, she looked around. When she saw a sewer opening, she asked, "Does this connect to the sewers?"
"Yeah."
Vi nodded.
Naturally, Zaun had sewers as well. After all, part of the city exposed to the outside would also be drenched by rain, and the sewers could be used to discharge factory wastewater too. They were rather important.
Caitlyn looked thoughtful, then walked toward that sewer opening.
When she stopped and looked down, her eyes suddenly lit up, as if she had discovered something.
And after Vi followed her over, she also froze.
This was a drainage opening, and beneath the drain cover, several vials of medicine glowing with purple light were lying crookedly in plain sight.
