Chapter 395 - 395: Feels Like I’m Growing a Brain (EC)
Vi was now in charge of Zaun, so naturally, she had to deal with deaths in the Undercity.
The Gray Nails had been an old gang in Zaun for a long time. As for whether they had made enemies, grudges born from disputes between gangs were nothing new.
Countless people died in Zaun every year because of gang conflicts.
That was something neither Vander nor Silco had been able to change when they were in charge.
So Vi knew that even she could only do her best to keep the situation under control. It was impossible to eliminate it completely.
Unless she imitated Piltover by establishing a dedicated law enforcement force, building courts, building police stations, and turning the Undercity into a city managed under unified public security.
But she thought that if that happened, Zaun could no longer be called Zaun.
Freedom and a lack of restraint were the soul of Zaun. Aside from some bad people, many Zaunites were still good, positive, and striving upward.
So she did not want to use Topside's rules and restrictions to bind the people of Zaun.
As she walked down the road, Vi remained deep in thought. After investigating the scene just now, she had discovered that the remaining bloodstains disappeared after reaching a certain place.
With the clues cut off, who had killed those two missing people had become a mystery again.
Vi decided to first go take a look at the Hamrat Gang, the old rivals of the Gray Nails.
The territories of the two gangs were adjacent, so they occasionally clashed. Vi had heard that during the years she had been gone, the two gangs had even gotten into a full-on fight.
That fight ended with both sides badly hurt, so the relationship between the two gangs had become even worse. Fights and brawls between them were common.
Vi had already warned them because of this. Whether it was the Gray Nails or the Hamrat Gang, both had promised her they would stop causing trouble from then on.
However, based on the current situation, if the Hamrat Gang did not give her any respect and had broken the rules by sending people into the Gray Nails' territory to kill two of Miranda's lackeys, Vi did not mind helping them remember the lesson.
After arriving in the Hamrat Gang's territory, Vi quickly saw the Hamrat Gang's boss, Mick, coming toward her with an ugly expression.
A large group of people followed behind him, their momentum fierce, as if they were preparing to settle accounts with someone.
Seeing this, Vi asked, "Where are you all going?"
Mick glanced at her, but still stopped. With a cold snort, he said, "To settle things with Miranda, obviously. That bitch fights dirty. We agreed not to cause trouble, and then last night, she sent people to mess with me!"
His words made Vi pause. She sorted through the situation, frowned, and asked, "You're saying Miranda sent people after you?"
"Not me, my men. But how is that any different from going after me?" Mick's two sections of mustache curled upward with rage. His expression was ugly as he said, "Last night, I sent two men to the backstreet. In the end, they still hadn't come back by this morning. I sent people to search around, and they found bloodstains in the back alley."
At first, Vi thought Mick was trying to preemptively pin the blame on Miranda. But after listening closely, she realized that might not be the case.
"Take me to the scene first. Something happened on Miranda's side too, which is why I came to ask you."
After thinking it through, Vi spoke.
"She still has the nerve to come to you? That bitch is rotten all the way through!"
Mick looked both angry and annoyed, and the gang members behind him were restless too.
"Just take me to the scene first." Vi's tone turned a little impatient.
Running into something like this first thing in the morning had put her in a very bad mood too. She wanted to see which side was really playing tricks.
"Fine. Follow me."
In the end, Mick took a step back and turned to lead the way.
He was wary of Vi as well. With her current strength, he was not someone she could afford to provoke.
After Silco's fall, he had originally thought his opportunity had come. Maybe he would also be qualified to become the Undercity's leader.
Then Vi appeared out of nowhere and, with a few punches, beat the surrounding gangs until they all tucked their tails back in.
And her temper was not particularly good. Usually, she would first give disobedient people a beating before saying anything else.
Unlike Silco, who had countless methods to intimidate people, this woman simply beat you down until you could sit down and talk calmly.
The smart ones avoided a beating. The foolish ones ended up like an old acquaintance of his.
The Shiv Gang, whose boss was Mafus, liked keeping a bunch of lackeys who hid knives in their sleeves. All they did was bully the weak and fear the strong.
They specialized in picking on easy targets, yet their personalities were flashy and arrogant.
They had repeatedly refused to accept Vi's management. Now, the Shiv Gang had already become history in Zaun, and Mick believed it would not be long before the world forgot them.
Vi followed Mick to the scene and indeed saw bloodstains. She observed the scene in the same way.
"They didn't leave even the slightest sign of resistance. Clearly, they were ambushed from behind."
At this point, Mick spoke from his own experience. He had already investigated the scene.
There were indeed no signs of a fight at the scene, and the dried bloodstains were real. This gave Vi a headache.
Because based on her intuition, it seemed neither side was lying.
So Vi briefly explained the situation on Miranda's side as well.
After listening, Mick's eyes widened. "What? She even implied that I sent people? Where would I find the mood to bother with her right now?"
"She didn't exactly accuse you. She just hinted at it." Vi thought for a moment, then said, "Since neither of you did this, it's possible someone else did."
"Then who would it be?" Mick temporarily put away his anger. There was no need for Vi to lie to him, so it was very likely that something had indeed happened on Miranda's side too.
He even thought this might be an attempt to sow discord.
"It might be aimed at me." Vi breathed out, and her gaze grew colder. "Both of your sides are at odds, and now people have died…"
This was no different from slapping her in the face, because she had only recently taken the position of leader, and now this mess had happened. Who knew how many people were laughing behind her back?
"First, I can guarantee that I absolutely have no intention of causing trouble."
Mick immediately spoke clearly at this moment. "If the same situation happened on Miranda's side, then clearly someone wants to provoke a fight between us."
"I believe you." Vi looked up at him and said, "Do me a favor. Keep the scene under control, and don't let anyone else come in and ruin it."
Mick nodded. Watching Vi turn and leave, he began ordering his men to protect the scene.
Vi walked down the road with her brows tightly furrowed, deep in thought.
Who was secretly causing trouble?
Or was one of the two gangs being dishonest and lying to her?
For a moment, there were too many targets to consider, while the information she had was too little. If things continued like this, she had no idea where to even begin.
She wanted to say that she was not a detective, so why had this miserable job fallen onto her head?
She was good at fighting, but solving cases? She really could not do this.
Vi sighed helplessly in her heart. Then something suddenly flashed through her mind.
Wait. Detective.
Topside.
"You also know I'm not the kind of person who cares about saving face. The moment I ran into trouble, I came straight to you. I really can't handle this kind of tangled case…"
Vi sat on a chair, speaking to the purple-haired girl beside her as though complaining. Then she sighed helplessly. "After this whole morning, I feel like my brain almost started working."
"I can tell."
Caitlyn glanced at her and nodded.
Vi sighed again. "In any case, you have to help me with this. Otherwise, I'm going to lose face in a big way."
"Didn't you just say you don't care about saving face?"
"I don't. But we've been through thick and thin together, haven't we? Can you really bear to watch the people of the Undercity talk badly about me?"
Vi blinked.
"All right, I never said I wouldn't help you."
Caitlyn stood up.
"Great. Thank you!" Vi immediately broke into a smile and stood up, wanting to give her an enthusiastic hug.
However, Caitlyn dodged away with disgust. This woman was wearing two huge gauntlets on her hands, and they looked extremely heavy at a glance.
She had no desire to be hugged by something like that.
After briefly tidying up and bringing her equipment, Caitlyn headed to the Undercity with Vi.
As the two walked down the road, Vi remembered something and asked, "Right, how's the investigation into that guy you wanted to look into?"
Caitlyn said, "You mean C?"
"Yeah."
"There hasn't been any result. Too few people know information about him."
Caitlyn sighed lightly, but she did not look particularly discouraged.
Hearing this, Vi said, "We'll definitely find him. During this time, I've also asked around for you in the Undercity. Not many people know about C, but some do. Unfortunately, they don't know much more about him either."
Caitlyn looked at her and said gratefully, "Thank you for going to the trouble."
"It's nothing. In the future, if I get the chance, I'll keep an eye out for you."
Vi smiled.
She had indeed been investigating this matter. Unfortunately, she really had not found much.
Soon, they arrived at Miranda's territory, at the scene of the incident.
Before leaving, Vi had also told Miranda to protect this place, and Miranda had done as she was told.
"This is the place. Look, those bloodstains."
Vi briefly introduced the scene to Caitlyn.
Caitlyn nodded slightly. She set down the case in her hand, opened it, put on a pair of gloves, took out several pieces of investigative equipment, and walked into the scene.
She examined the scene very carefully, not missing a single corner. The people around her did not dare make a sound and disturb her.
They simply waited anxiously.
However, Caitlyn soon found something. She picked up a piece of cloth from the ground and examined it with a magnifying glass.
"This should be from the victim's clothing. Judging from the tear marks around it, it wasn't forcibly pulled apart by a person. It was torn off directly by something sharp."
She placed the clothing fragment into a transparent bag, then found several more clothing fragments of various sizes.
"These are all pieces from the same garment. Clearly, they came from one person."
She analyzed it on her own.
This was obviously a detail that neither Miranda nor Vi had paid attention to. After all, what Zaunite would pay attention to scraps of cloth by the roadside?
Miranda and her lackeys were stunned. As expected of Vi, she even had someone this capable by her side.
Vi was also extremely impressed. As expected of Topside's finest cop. Just look at that technique, that investigative attitude, that level of professionalism. She really was amazing.
Soon, Caitlyn found the second clue.
"There are still traces of footprints at the scene, although many new footprints have damaged the scene during this period."
She walked while observing, then analyzed, "Fortunately, they're not hard to distinguish. Based on the types of footprints, we can basically identify the two missing people at the scene, as well as one other person."
"One person?"
Vi spoke.
"That's right. Based on my analysis, there was only one killer. He was carrying a sharp weapon. He also had a certain level of strength. I found footprints he left on the wall, but they're strange. They don't really look like they were made by shoes."
Caitlyn had almost finished investigating all useful clues at the scene, even discovering the footprints on the wall.
Afterward, she also found a bullet mark.
"I believe the killer may have been dodging bullets. The distance between them definitely would not have exceeded twenty meters."
As Caitlyn spoke, she came to the place where one of the victims had fired. She closed her eyes and simulated holding a handgun.
Miranda added at this point, "Dack was a good shot. He almost never missed."
"Six bullet marks were found at the scene, meaning not a single shot hit. If what you said is true, then that can only mean the killer was faster."
Caitlyn imagined the situation in which the victim had fired, trying to fire six shots in her mind while envisioning the bullet trajectories.
When a person was in the most dangerous moment, especially someone with good marksmanship, they would usually aim for places that could kill with one shot.
The heart. The brain.
"Based on the overall analysis, the killer should be around one meter eighty to one meter eighty-five in height, and his build is not too heavy."
Hearing Caitlyn's clear and logical analysis, Vi was a little stunned. But she quickly came back to herself and asked, "So that means I only need to look for people whose height and body type fall within that range?"
Caitlyn opened her eyes and said, "Not just that. It would be best to look for someone strong and extremely fast."
Vi nodded and looked at Miranda. "You heard her. The range has been narrowed down. Send your people immediately to search for anyone matching those traits. If there are any clues, tell me right away."
Miranda immediately nodded as well, turned around, and began giving orders.
Vi and Caitlyn immediately headed to the Hamrat Gang's territory and began examining the second crime scene.
At the second scene, Caitlyn confirmed her analysis.
"We can determine that the killer was the same person."
She gave her conclusion.
Hearing this, Vi's eyes could not help narrowing.
Mick, standing nearby, also clenched his fists as anger surged in his chest. "Damn it. Which son of a bitch decided to mess with me?"
"Huff." Vi exhaled and looked at Mick. "Send people out first. Look for anyone who matches those traits. Tell me immediately if there's any situation."
"I understand."
Mick nodded and left.
Vi's expression gradually turned cold.
At this moment, Caitlyn also frowned slightly and said, "If the same person did it, then there is definitely a third-party force trying to provoke a fight between the two gangs."
"I know. They're coming after me." Vi nodded gently, coldness spreading through her eyes. "After all, a lot of people have been watching me since I took this position. It's normal that they're not convinced. But pulling these little tricks behind my back… Whoever it is had better hope I don't find out."
Her fists tightened slightly, revealing the anger in her heart.
Naturally, she understood what Caitlyn was saying.
At first, with the situation unclear, it had still been possible that one of the two gangs was playing dumb.
But now, it had been confirmed. It was not that they wanted to cause trouble, but that a third-party force was hiding in the dark and making small moves.
That clearly meant they were targeting Vi.
At this moment, both the Gray Nails and the Hamrat Gang were angry too, because they felt that no matter who this third party wanted to mess with, they had specifically chosen to act on their territory.
Clearly, they did not take them seriously.
The people of both gangs began moving. Vi did not stay idle either. She mobilized everyone and began searching for anyone who matched the traits.
