Manchester United Revival

Chapter 194: UEFA Super Cup MUN vs SEV

The August heat hung over the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus. Floodlights illuminated the pitch while thousands of supporters filled the stands.

This was a European night, different from a domestic league fixture.

The UEFA Super Cup rested on a pedestal near the tunnel. The European anthem played around the stadium as Manchester United and Sevilla supporters filled the ground with chants.

The teams walked onto the pitch.

Marcus Vale followed his coaching staff. He wore a black club suit, holding a paper cup of coffee in his right hand.

The tactical plan had already been established at Carrington.

High in the broadcast gantry, the main camera went live.

"Good evening, and welcome to Greece," John Murray said. "The Mediterranean heat is oppressive, but the atmosphere is electric. Tonight, the Kings of the Champions League meet the Masters of the Europa League. Manchester United, coming off a season of unprecedented dominance, look to add another trophy to their collection. Alongside me is Don Hutchison."

"Evening, John," Hutchison replied. "It's a fascinating tactical matchup tonight. You look at this United side, and Marcus Vale has gone with a fluid structure. Zakaria sitting deep, Van de Beek and Bruno ahead of him. But it's not a rigid midfield. It's designed to shift. Sevilla are going to have a difficult time figuring out who to mark."

The referee blew his whistle.

The Super Cup began.

Sevilla started with purpose.

Yassine Bounou sent an early pass toward the right flank. Jesús Navas controlled it before combining with Ivan Rakitić.

United did not press aggressively. They held their shape, allowing Sevilla's center-backs to have possession while protecting the central areas.

"Sevilla with early possession," Murray narrated. "Navas looks up. He swings an early cross into the penalty area, searching for En-Nesyri. Varane is there. A firm header clears the danger. De Gea gathers the loose ball."

"That's exactly what Sevilla want to do, John," Hutchison said. "They know United will compress the middle, so they are testing those center-backs with early deliveries from wide areas. But look at Zakaria. He's dropped in front of Maguire and Varane to collect the second balls. United are just reading the shape."

Marcus gestured with two fingers, instructing Luke Shaw and Kieran Trippier to hold a more conservative line.

By the twelfth minute, United began to establish control.

Bruno Fernandes found space behind Rakitić.

Donny van de Beek moved between Sevilla's midfielders, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia stayed wide on the left, pulling Jesús Navas toward the flank.

"United are beginning to find their rhythm," Murray observed. "Trippier into Zakaria. Zakaria finds Van de Beek in space. It's lovely passing."

In the eighteenth minute, the opening appeared.

Zakaria intercepted a loose pass from Ocampos and immediately played forward to Van de Beek.

Van de Beek played one touch into the right half-space, where Bruno had moved.

"Fernandes finds room," Murray called. "Olise is drifting inside, taking Acuña with him. Khvicha stays wide on the left. Sevilla's defense is stretched across the pitch."

Bruno crossed early toward the penalty spot.

Cristiano Ronaldo had been waiting on the shoulder of the last defender.

He checked his run, allowed the center-back to step forward, and then attacked the space.

Ronaldo met the cross and headed the ball down, sending it beyond Bounou and into the net.

"Ronaldo! Brilliant movement, devastating finish!" Murray shouted. "Manchester United strike first in Piraeus!"

"It's a beautiful goal," Hutchison said. "But look at how it develops. Khvicha stays wide. Olise moves inside. Sevilla's back four gets stretched. It creates the gap, and if you give Cristiano Ronaldo that space, he will punish you. It's excellent attacking structure from United."

Marcus turned toward Michael Carrick and gave a single nod.

Sevilla responded.

Rakitić dropped deeper to control possession and bypass United's pressing structure. Ocampos attacked Shaw and won a corner.

A few minutes later, En-Nesyri escaped Maguire and hit a low shot that forced De Gea into a save.

The game remained competitive, but United's transitions were creating problems.

In the thirty-eighth minute, they scored again.

This time, Ronaldo dropped toward midfield, pulling a Sevilla center-back with him.

Bruno recognized the movement.

He flicked the ball to Van de Beek, who made a late run into the space Ronaldo had left.

"Van de Beek surging forward," Murray said. "He slides it wide to Khvicha. Kvaratskhelia drives into the penalty area, he cuts it back—"

Michael Olise arrived at the back post.

Unmarked, he opened his left foot and placed the ball into the bottom corner.

"Olise finishes the move! Manchester United double their advantage!" Murray announced.

"That's difficult to defend," Hutchison explained. "When Ronaldo drops, do you follow him and leave space, or do you let him receive? Sevilla follow him. Van de Beek attacks the space, and the defensive structure breaks."

The halftime whistle followed.

Manchester United led 2-0.

As the players walked toward the tunnel, the broadcast remained focused on the pitch.

"A display of efficiency from Manchester United," Murray said.

"Sevilla have had their moments," Hutchison replied. "They've tested De Gea. But United's attacking movements have been more effective."

The second half began with Sevilla pushing forward.

Their full-backs moved higher. Rakitić continued directing possession toward En-Nesyri.

In the fifty-fifth minute, En-Nesyri won a header inside the area, but De Gea saved again.

Marcus watched the change in the game.

The pitch was becoming more open.

He handed his empty coffee cup to a staff member and turned toward the bench.

Over the next twenty minutes, he began rotating the squad.

Paulo Dybala replaced Donny van de Beek, adding another creative player between the lines.

Loïs Openda replaced Cristiano Ronaldo.

The stadium applauded Ronaldo as he walked off after another decisive European performance.

Mason Greenwood replaced Khvicha, giving United another direct attacking option.

Scott McTominay replaced Zakaria.

Diogo Dalot replaced Trippier.

"It's a luxury to bring that quality off the bench," Murray observed.

"It's more than luxury," Hutchison replied. "It's squad management. Marcus Vale is leading 2-0 in a European final, and he's already considering the next fixture. He's keeping the physical load balanced. Nobody in this squad is simply a backup."

On the bench, João Neves watched the match.

Bruno Fernandes, having moved deeper, came to the sideline for water. He briefly tapped Neves on the shoulder and pointed toward a defensive rotation Sevilla had been using before returning to the pitch.

In the eightieth minute, United finished the match.

Sevilla had committed numbers forward for a corner.

McTominay won the header.

The ball fell to Dybala.

He controlled it and immediately turned forward.

"Dybala turns," Murray said. "He hooks it into space. Greenwood is chasing it down. Sevilla are exposed."

Greenwood carried the ball down the right and entered the penalty area.

He looked up and squared the ball across the six-yard box.

Openda attacked the space and arrived in front of goal.

He struck the ball past Bounou.

"Openda makes it three! Devastating counter-attack!" Murray shouted. "Manchester United have surely secured the Super Cup!"

"They punish you when you leave space," Hutchison said. "McTominay, Dybala, Greenwood, Openda. Three passes and Sevilla are opened up."

The final ten minutes became a period of game management.

United kept possession.

De Gea claimed crosses. Varane and Maguire maintained their defensive line. Dalot and Shaw protected the flanks. Dybala won fouls in midfield to slow the match.

On the touchline, Marcus stood with his hands in his pockets and checked his watch.

"Look at the manager," Murray said. "Minutes away from another European trophy, and he looks like he's waiting for a bus."

The referee checked his watch and blew the final whistle.

MANCHESTER UNITED 3 – 0 SEVILLA

"It is all over in Piraeus!" Murray announced. "Manchester United add the UEFA Super Cup to their collection! Another controlled performance from Marcus Vale's side."

"They were deserved winners," Hutchison concluded. "Sevilla tested them early, but United found the spaces and punished them."

The players immediately celebrated.

Substitutes ran onto the pitch.

Bruno lifted Dalot from the ground.

De Gea ran out of his penalty area to embrace Varane and Maguire.

New signings Jarrad Branthwaite and Cole Palmer joined the celebrations.

Marcus stayed near the technical area, allowing the players to enjoy the moment.

Then McTominay and Greenwood appeared beside him carrying a cooler of ice water.

Before Marcus could react, they emptied it over him.

Marcus froze.

His suit was soaked.

He wiped his face and looked at the two players.

"That's cold," Marcus said.

The squad burst into laughter and pulled him into the celebration.

The presentation stage was assembled.

The players collected their medals.

Marcus received his medal, looked at it briefly, then put it into his pocket.

Bruno Fernandes, wearing the captain's armband, collected the Super Cup.

He carried it to the center of the group and lifted it above his head.

Confetti filled the air.

The players celebrated around him.

Ronaldo stood near the edge of the podium, smiling at the trophy.

Bruno nudged him.

"Another one?"

Ronaldo laughed and put an arm around Bruno as the photographers captured the moment.

Eventually, the trophy reached Marcus.

He lifted it briefly for the cameras and smiled before handing it back to McTominay, allowing the players to remain at the center of the photographs.

"A masterclass in squad management from Marcus Vale," Hutchison said as the broadcast prepared to end. "He has built a team that continues to find different ways to win."

An hour later, the stadium was mostly empty.

The confetti remained on the pitch.

The United players finished their photographs before heading toward the dressing rooms.

Marcus stood near the touchline with his jacket over one arm.

Another trophy.

Another European night.

Carrick walked over with a clipboard.

"Tomorrow?" Marcus asked.

"Recovery at ten," Carrick confirmed. "Flight back to Manchester at two."

Marcus nodded.

"Excellent."

He turned and walked toward the players.

The Super Cup remained behind them, reflecting the stadium lights.

The new season had begun.
