Manchester United Revival

Chapter 193: MUN vs Wolves

The August sun hung over Old Trafford, casting shadows across the pitch. Outside, the atmosphere carried the energy of a new Premier League season. It was not simply the opening day; it was the return of the unbeaten champions.

Banners celebrating the 107-game unbeaten run covered the Stretford End. Red, white, and black scarves filled the stands.

Inside the home dressing room, the focus was on the match.

Players laced their boots in silence. Studs struck the floor, tape was wrapped around ankles, and the medical staff completed the final checks.

On the tactical screen, Manchester United's expected shape stood beside a representation of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

João Neves sat beside his locker.

He looked at the red shirt hanging in front of him. The Premier League champions' patch sat on the sleeve.

A few months earlier, he had been playing in Portugal. Now he was preparing to make his first Premier League start at Old Trafford.

"Boots on, lads," Michael Carrick called. "Three minutes to the tunnel."

Before the warm-ups could finish, the squad had one ceremony to attend.

The players walked out of the tunnel and onto the pitch.

The seventy-four thousand supporters inside Old Trafford rose together, filling the stadium with noise.

Near the center circle stood a custom golden Premier League trophy, commissioned to commemorate the unbeaten league title from the previous season.

The squad gathered around it.

Senior players, new signings, academy graduates, and members of the coaching staff formed a semi-circle.

Marcus Vale stood near the back. He wore his black club coat, his hands in the pockets.

Cristiano Ronaldo stood near the center, smiling toward the cameras.

João Neves stood beside Cole Palmer, trying to remain composed as photographers surrounded them.

"Heavy, isn't it?" Harry Maguire joked to Bruno Fernandes, looking at the trophy.

"Heavy to lift, heavier to keep," Bruno replied.

The cameras flashed.

The photograph was taken.

The players then returned to the dressing room.

The trophy was left behind.

The match was what mattered now.

Marcus stepped into the center of the room.

"Last season was last season," he said quietly.

The room went silent.

"That golden trophy is a piece of metal. It does not give us a one-goal advantage today. It does not make us faster."

He looked around the starting eleven.

"Today, Wolverhampton Wanderers are here to take three points from us. They do not care about your seven trophies. They do not care about your unbeaten record. They are going to press you, they are going to challenge you, and they are going to try and embarrass you on your own pitch."

Marcus pointed toward the tactical board.

"Discipline. No complacency. We execute the game plan. Clear?"

"Clear," the room answered.

Manchester United set up in a 4-2-2-2.

David de Gea started in goal.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka played at right-back, with Harry Maguire and Kim Min-jae in central defense. Álvaro Carreras started at left-back.

João Neves partnered Scott McTominay in midfield.

Bruno Fernandes and Cole Palmer operated behind the front two, playing between Wolves' midfield and defensive lines.

Paulo Dybala played as a false nine, dropping into midfield to link play.

Cristiano Ronaldo remained the main striker, occupying the center-backs and threatening the space behind them.

The referee blew his whistle.

The new season began.

Wolves did not sit back.

They started with energy, pressing selectively and closing passing lanes. Their manager had clearly identified United's left side as an area to attack, repeatedly sending long diagonal passes toward Álvaro Carreras.

In the eighth minute, the plan nearly worked.

Carreras was caught by the press.

Wolves won possession and attacked the penalty area.

A low shot forced De Gea into a diving save.

Old Trafford reacted with a brief murmur.

Kim Min-jae immediately moved toward Carreras, giving him a pat on the back before reorganizing the back line.

In midfield, João Neves began to settle.

In the fourteenth minute, Maguire passed into him.

Two Wolves midfielders closed quickly.

Neves checked his left shoulder before receiving the ball.

He allowed it to run across his body, opened his hips, and turned away from the first challenge.

Three yards of space opened in front of him.

Neves carried the ball forward and played into Bruno Fernandes.

The crowd applauded.

McTominay gave the teenager a nod.

On the touchline, Marcus simply watched.

"Good," he said quietly.

By the twenty-fifth minute, United's 4-2-2-2 was beginning to control the center.

The narrow positions of Bruno and Palmer created passing options around Wolves' midfield.

The opening goal came in the twenty-eighth minute.

McTominay won an aerial duel and headed the ball down to Neves.

Neves immediately looked forward.

He played through the first line of pressure into Bruno.

Bruno received on the half-turn.

Palmer moved diagonally inside from the right.

At the same moment, Dybala dropped toward midfield, dragging a Wolves center-back with him.

The gap opened.

Ronaldo attacked it.

Bruno played the through-ball.

Ronaldo took one touch and struck a low finish across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner.

1-0.

Old Trafford erupted.

Ronaldo ran toward the corner flag and performed his celebration as Dybala and Palmer joined him.

Marcus applauded briefly before calling Wan-Bissaka over.

"Stay narrower," he instructed. "Don't give them that space."

Wolves responded by pushing higher.

They won two corners, but Maguire and Kim Min-jae dealt with the deliveries.

United then found a second goal just before halftime.

Dybala received the ball near the center circle.

He turned away from his marker and carried it forward.

Wolves' defenders narrowed their positions, expecting the pass through the middle.

Instead, Dybala clipped the ball toward the left.

Bruno had moved into space near the touchline.

He controlled the pass and delivered a cross toward the penalty spot.

Ronaldo had already adjusted his position.

He moved away from the defender, attacked the cross, and headed the ball into the roof of the net.

2-0.

The halftime whistle followed shortly afterward.

Inside the dressing room, there was no celebration.

Marcus stood beside the tactical board.

"They are giving us the middle now," he said, pointing toward the center.

"They've widened their defensive shape to stop the crosses. Álvaro, you look composed. Be patient. Don't force the overlap if it isn't there."

He looked toward Neves.

"Keep doing the simple things. The spaces will open."

Then Palmer.

"Stay between them. Make their center-backs choose who to mark."

Finally, the forwards.

"Don't force it. Let the ball do the work."

The second half began with Wolves pushing forward.

In the fifty-first minute, they overloaded the right side.

A quick one-two bypassed Wan-Bissaka.

The winger cut the ball back toward the edge of the penalty area.

A Wolves midfielder arrived late and struck the ball.

It took a deflection off Kim Min-jae, wrong-footing De Gea.

The ball went in.

2-1.

The away section erupted.

Old Trafford became tense.

Wolves pushed higher.

Marcus checked the time and looked toward the bench.

In the sixtieth minute, the substitutions came.

Cristiano Ronaldo was replaced by Michael Olise.

Ronaldo received a standing ovation as he walked off after scoring twice.

Loïs Openda entered the pitch.

Paulo Dybala made way for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Mason Greenwood replaced Cole Palmer.

Diogo Dalot replaced Wan-Bissaka.

Donny van de Beek replaced Scott McTominay.

Van de Beek brought quicker combinations through midfield.

Olise and Khvicha moved wider, stretching Wolves' back line.

Greenwood moved more centrally.

Wolves had to adjust to a completely different attacking shape.

In the seventy-second minute, United broke through again.

Olise received the ball on the right.

He slowed his defender, then cut inside onto his left foot.

Bruno Fernandes made an overlapping run outside him, taking the full-back away.

Olise drove a low pass across the penalty area.

Khvicha arrived at the back post and finished into the corner.

3-1.

Old Trafford erupted again.

Ten minutes later, United scored a fourth.

João Neves collected a loose ball under pressure.

He played into Van de Beek.

Van de Beek flicked the ball around the corner into Bruno's path.

Bruno played first time into the channel for Olise.

Olise looked up and squared the ball toward the penalty spot.

Mason Greenwood had already attacked the space.

He struck the ball on the half-volley and found the net.

4-1.

The move had taken United from midfield to the goal in four passes.

The final whistle followed soon after.

MANCHESTER UNITED 4 – 1 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

The title defense had begun.

The supporters sang as the players applauded the stands.

Bruno found João Neves and put an arm around the teenager's shoulders, pointing toward the Stretford End.

Carreras, having recovered from his difficult opening spell, laughed with Dalot.

Ronaldo stood near the tunnel entrance, satisfied with his two goals.

Marcus walked onto the pitch and shook hands with Carrick and the coaching staff before acknowledging the Wolves manager.

He then headed toward the tunnel.

The golden trophy from earlier was no longer on the pitch.

It was history.

Later that evening, Carrington was quiet.

The medical staff prepared the recovery area for the following morning.

Marcus sat alone in his office.

His coat hung over the back of the chair.

The training schedule for Monday was spread across the desk. Beside it, the tactical board held the players' names.

Marcus picked up the tag marked:

NEVES.

He looked at it for a moment.

Then he moved it from the development group into the main tactical group alongside Fernandes, Van de Beek, and McTominay.

The opening match was finished.

The next training session had already begun in Marcus's mind.

The result was not the only thing that mattered.

The important point was that an eighteen-year-old midfielder had made his Premier League debut for Manchester United and handled the pressure without allowing the occasion to change his game.

He had received under pressure.

He had turned away from challenges.

He had played forward.

He had defended his position.

He had looked comfortable.

Marcus closed the tactical folder.

"Good start," he whispered to the empty room.
