Chapter 211: A Report from the West
Several days passed after Robert stood on the high platform watching the clan below him.
Life inside the Osborn Clan had settled into a rhythm that felt, for the first time in a long while, genuinely stable. The Cultivation Hall ran smoothly each morning, its rooms filled with members working through their training without interruption.
The information network kept expanding outward, city by city, each new point adding another thread to the web Sai had built. Trade continued without trouble. Recruitment continued without effort. Robert spent most of his days now reviewing reports and thinking ahead, planning growth that no longer needed to happen under the shadow of an immediate threat.
It was, in many ways, the quiet he had been working towards since the night the spatial lock collapsed.
One morning, Sai arrived at the Information Hall carrying a single report, separated from the usual stack of daily summaries. He set it down in front of Robert without his usual brief explanation, which was itself unusual enough that Robert looked up before reading a word of it.
"This came from one of our most distant points," Sai said. "Nearly two thousand kilometers west of here."
Robert raised an eyebrow slightly. Information from that far rarely warranted urgency. Most of it arrived weeks late and described events that had already resolved themselves long before the report reached Magical City.
"Why bring it to me directly?" He asked.
"Because of what it describes," Sai said.
Robert picked it up and began reading.
The report had originated from a merchant caravan that recently passed through one of the network's western outposts. During several evenings spent trading and resting, the caravan members had fallen into conversation with local merchants, and one subject kept surfacing again and again in those conversations.
A place called Forgotten Moon City.
Robert had never heard the name before, and the report itself spent its opening section explaining why that was surprising. Three hundred years ago, Forgotten Moon City had been a prosperous cultivation city, known throughout its region for the strength of its training grounds and the wealth of its trade.
Then, without clear explanation, disaster struck. Nobody who survived it had ever given a consistent account of what happened. Within a short span of time, the city emptied entirely, and what remained behind was simply abandoned.
Over the following decades, fewer and fewer people spoke of it. The generation that remembered the disaster passed away, and the stories that replaced their memories grew vaguer with each retelling until Forgotten Moon City became little more than the kind of tale travelers shared around a fire late at night, more legend than history.
But according to the merchants the caravan had spoken with, something had changed recently.
People had begun disappearing near the ruins. Small groups of explorers, drawn by old rumors of forgotten treasure, entered the abandoned city and simply never returned. Travelers passing nearby at night reported seeing lights moving through districts that should have been completely dark and completely empty. Several treasure hunters, experienced enough to know the risks of ruins like this, had vanished without leaving any trace at all.
Most local people dismissed the stories as superstition, the kind of exaggeration that always grew up around old, abandoned places. Others were less certain. A few believed something inside those ruins had stirred awake after three hundred years of silence.
Sai had gathered everything available on the matter, and he admitted plainly that most of it was incomplete. Much of the report relied on rumor and secondhand retelling rather than direct observation.
But the similarities between separate, unconnected accounts were difficult to dismiss entirely. Different travelers, speaking to different merchants in different conversations, kept describing the same lights, the same disappearances, the same uneasy feeling about a city that had been quiet for three centuries.
Robert read through it slowly, turning the page over once he reached the end.
At first, he treated it the way he treated most unusual reports — interesting, worth remembering, not urgent enough to act on immediately. The clan received thousands of reports each month, and a handful of them always described something strange happening somewhere far away.
Then the system activated.
A notification appeared in front of him, distinct from anything he had seen in months.
Mission Name: Investigate Forgotten Moon City
Mission Difficulty: S
Mission Description: An anomaly has appeared within Forgotten Moon City. Travel to Forgotten Moon City. Investigate the source of the disappearances. Discover the truth hidden within the ruins. Eliminate or resolve the anomaly if possible.
Time Limit: One Year
Reward One: 300,000 System Points
Reward Two: Heaven Soul Ascension Pill
He read the description of the second reward carefully. The pill, according to the system, allowed a cultivator at the peak of the Soul Manifestation Realm to break through into the Sky Vein Realm with a significantly increased chance of success and without damaging the cultivator's foundation in the process.
Below the rewards sat a failure penalty, stated clearly. If the mission failed, his system point income would drop by half for three years, and the system would generate no additional main missions during that same period.
Robert sat with the notification for a long moment, reading it through a second time.
This was the first mission of this scale the system had issued since the clan development task months ago. The point reward alone was significant. But it was the Heavenly Soul Ascension Pill that held his full attention.
A treasure capable of pushing a cultivator past the Soul Manifestation Realm entirely, without risk to their foundation, was not something he had ever expected to encounter this early. If used correctly, it could change the entire trajectory of the Osborn Clan's future strength.
More than the rewards, though, what struck him was the difficulty rating itself.
The system did not assign an S difficulty to ordinary rumors. Whatever existed inside Forgotten Moon City, it was real, and it was significant enough that the system itself had flagged it as worth pursuing.
Robert closed the notification and sat quietly, thinking through everything the mission implied.
He looked around the Information Hall, at the daily rhythm continuing without him needing to direct any part of it.
Sai managed the network capably on his own now. John and Mary led with a settled confidence that no longer required Robert's constant presence. Ronan, Sarah, Taylen, and Eissa had each grown into roles within the clan that did not depend on him standing over their shoulder. The clan was stable.
The clan was secure. The clan was, for the first time since he had inherited responsibility for it, capable of running smoothly without him at its center every single day.
The realization settled over him slowly.
He could leave.
Not recklessly, not without preparation, but for the first time since the early days of rebuilding the Osborn name, an extended absence would not put everything he had built at risk.
Forgotten Moon City was nearly two thousand kilometers away. The route there would pass through territories he knew nothing about, past clans whose names he had never heard, through dangers and opportunities the system's mission description had only hinted at. It was, by any reasonable measure, a significant undertaking.
But it was also, he realized, exactly the kind of opportunity that did not arrive twice.
He looked at the mission window once more, reading through the reward list a final time before letting it fade from his vision.
Then he stood and walked to the large map mounted on the Information Hall's far wall, the same map Sai used to track the network's growing reach across the region.
His eyes moved slowly westward, past the boundaries of every territory the clan's information points currently covered, past cities he had only ever seen described in secondhand reports, until they settled on a single distant location near the map's western edge.
Forgotten Moon City.
A place that had been silent for three hundred years and was, for reasons nobody yet understood, no longer silent at all.
Robert stood there for a long while, looking at the mark on the map.
He did not say anything to Sai about what the system had shown him. Not yet. There would be time for that conversation and for the much larger one that would follow it.
For now, he simply looked west, toward a city that legend had nearly forgotten, and felt something he had not felt in months.
Curiosity.
The kind that came before every journey worth taking.
He understands the risks involved in this situation, but he knows that without taking risks, he won't achieve anything in life. Before he leaves, he plans to take three members with him, but first, he needs to let his mom and dad know.
