Chapter 61. It’s better if I show you.
He decided to tell her. On the biggest planet in the solar system, Silas was waiting for her to respond to his message. An hour later the sound of space folding came and Evelyn stepped out of it, looking at him. She had algae in her hair and smelled like fish, which he didn’t mind.
“Silas? What is wrong?” She looked at the cube prison in front of them, in the middle of the red storm that was the eye of Jupiter. She tilted her head.
“It’s better if I show you.”
With that, he snapped his fingers and they appeared in the prison. The floor was made of gray metal and the walls were white. Twenty cube-shaped cells were lined up with one pod each, in total there were ten inmates. The red lights above them flickered as he looked at Evelyn.
She understood immediately and her blue eyes went wide.
Evelyn walked to the first cell and touched it, her fingers tracing the glass. Silas stayed in his spot. Watching her face, he could see the shock on her face turn into confusion. The confusion slowly turned into horror.
“You and Berlin said Urek died... He’s alive?” Her voice was quiet.
A small nod was his answer. Inside the pod the man looked like he was sleeping, his face frozen in time with the scars visible on his skin.
Silas sighed. Urek was a madman and yet they didn’t kill him.
Leaving the first pod, Evelyn went to the second. Then the third and fourth, each pod had one of the world’s deadliest people sleeping in it.
He saw her body start to shake as she reached the fifth and the prisoner was none other than Kalki.
Evelyn took a sharp breath.
A pang of guilt hit him. He walked up next to her and looked at the girl, no older than sixteen, she was locked up in this place. Her purple hair and blue eyes.
“Silas... what is this place?” She turned to him with a serious look, her hand was trembling.
“Backup plan. A place where the worst of the worst stay to protect humanity,” he confessed, rubbing his neck, “Berlin and I talked about this and we decided it was the logical choice. I was in charge of the location and he was in charge of the lock.”
He took a deep breath and looked at Evelyn. Her blue eyes were glistening.
“But Berlin’s lock is fading.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Worst of the worst? Kalki was your protégé, she didn’t kill innocent people. Why is she here?” Her question was valid.
Nodding, he turned to look at the pod, the one that contained Lysandra the time mage.
“It was Berlin’s decision. Kalki had void magic and was already as strong as me at E-rank. If she continued to grow, she’d be uncontrollable and if she ever went rogue she would be worse than Lysandra.”
The mention of the woman in the last cell made Evelyn’s breath hitch.
Silas didn’t want to seal Kalki but when Liz got pregnant with the twins, he agreed to Berlin’s proposal. He wouldn’t risk his family over his protégé.
Then he looked at Evelyn, who was just staring at the pods, her hands balled into fists.
A touch on her shoulder.
“I’m sorry. I should’ve told you,” he said and pulled her into a hug. It felt like hugging a rock, her body was unmoving.
After a few seconds, she hugged him back. The smell of ocean was so strong on her clothes.
They stood like that for a few moments, his hands rubbing her back.
Then Evelyn pulled away, a serious look on her face as she stared at him.
“What do you need me to do?”
His smile was soft.
“If the time ever comes and the prison fails, fight alongside me of course.” he explained and gave her one more kiss. “But for now I want to create a backup plan, for our family. Another planet that we could move to if necessary.”
Evelyn raised her eyebrow, crossing her arms.
“And where do we find a habitable planet that could sustain us?”
“I already found one and started preparing it, but I need you to protect my family so that I can check up on it from time to time,” he replied.
She nodded.
“Of course I’ll do that.” Her eyes went to the pod again, “Have you told Lucifer about this?”
Shaking his head, he put his hands in his pockets.
“No. I don’t think she can properly handle this information yet.”
Evelyn sighed.
“Okay I understand.”
Space wrapped around her and she was gone, teleported back to the ocean.
Silas was alone with the sleeping prisoners. His violet eyes on Kalki. She didn’t deserve this but she wasn’t his family so he tricked her that day and locked her in this place. Kalki trusted him and he lied to her. There was a sour feeling in his throat.
He would not apologize for the choice.
Her eyes moved just a bit and he caught the movement, his hand pressing against the glass.
“Don’t wake up please Kalki,” he muttered. The girl’s eyes closed again, she was still sleeping.
A sigh left him. At the current rate of weakening, he had a year until the prison failed. Why did Berlin have to leave him with this mess?
Even if he wanted to kill them before they woke up, it would be difficult because the old man sealed them all together in one big blob of a sealing spell and he didn’t want to risk dealing with void, time, destruction, death and all those other magic types even if they were not at full power.
Safety for his family and Evelyn came first. With a click of his tongue, he vanished from the prison and back to Earth, a frown on his face that vanished as soon as Victoria called him papa. He went to her and let her tell him about her day.
