Retired S-rank father becomes a teacher

Chapter 60. The new normal.

Another day at the Vane household. Silas was up in the early dawn thanks to his spatial awareness. As usual he would get ready and make breakfast. Making sure not to wake Liz up, he slipped out of the bed and put on a pair of comfortable sweatpants and a t-shirt.

Routine was good. He liked the flow of it.

The familiar halls were quiet. Walking down the stairs, he noticed that the lights in the kitchen were on. Voices could be heard.

Entering the kitchen, there was Nina and Hailey. Nina was sitting at the island table in her maid uniform, eating some leftover pizza while Hailey was drinking orange juice and they were talking.

A smile appeared on his face and he leaned against the doorway.

“Come on show me your arms again,” Hailey begged with a giggle. Her silver hair was messy and she was wearing a pair of shorts and a large shirt.

Nina rolled her eyes but her lips were quirked up. She put down the slice of pizza and started to remove her glasses and Hailey squealed. Her maid uniform disappeared in a flash and her extra four arms emerged, their blue skin shiny in the light. She grabbed her pizza and took a bite.

The scene in front of him was lovely. They both turned to Silas with wide eyes, as if they were caught doing something they shouldn’t. Chuckling he walked to them, his hand ruffling Hailey’s hair and she smiled widely at him.

“Morning Dad.”

“Morning kiddo and morning Nina.” .

Opening the fridge, the cold air hit his skin and the smell of food was strong. He took out a bottle of fresh squeezed apple juice and poured himself a glass.

Nina watched him as she munched on her pizza and her glasses were back on her face.

“Why are you two up so early?”

The clock on the wall showed that it was only five in the morning and yet they both seemed energetic.

Hailey finished her juice and put the glass on the counter.

“Who said I slept? I was up all night editing this video. Here look!” Hailey showed him her phone.

On the screen of her phone, there was a video of a ramen eating contest and there was a person with a fox mask eating as if their life depended on it.

“That’s me,” she said with a smirk and he laughed.

He knew that was her. Who else could eat like that? Watching her eat her way to victory in the video was fun and Nina was also peeking over at the screen with a curious gaze.

“And you Nina?” he asked, looking away from the phone and sipping his drink.

She blinked and pointed at herself with the crust of her pizza. Then she pointed at Hailey.

“This weird girl knocked on my door and wanted to talk about anime, how could I say no?”

Hailey giggled, a proud look on her face as she put her phone away. “Yup, she’s my new bestie.”

Silas smiled softly and shook his head.

They both looked so comfortable together. He wondered how much of a bad influence Hailey was going to be. A little bad was fine, in his opinion. A murder here and there.

Turning on the stove, he started preparing breakfast, listening to the two girls chatter about some weird shows he has never heard of. They were in their own little world, full of strange references. A monkey with tentacles? What?

“Say Dad is it true that you have an exam today?” Hailey leaned on his shoulder, her silver hair tickling him as she smelled the cooking meat.

He nodded, his eyes on the pan.

The temperature of the kitchen was slowly getting warmer from the heat of the stove and he loved it.

“After today I should go back to being a full time teacher at Aethelgard. Lucifer is a pain in the ass,” he grumbled.

“The judge?” Nina asked, her eyes widening a little.

The sound of sizzling bacon filled the air.

“Yes. You know her?” he flipped the bacon.

Nina nodded. Her eyes going to the empty pizza box.

“Somehow I received an email from her telling me to register as a hybrid on the Hunter Association website,” Nina shrugged and continued, “I thought it was a scam but it seems legit.”

This was unexpected. A smirk grew on his lips. Lucifer was doing the right thing, registering hybrids. If she kept this up, he might have to actually give her his respect.

He laughed.

The smell of eggs and toast filled the kitchen and the other family members slowly joined for breakfast. The table for the first time was completely occupied, all the seats were taken by a Vane family member or someone who belonged there.

Lisa was a sleepy mess but Liz was a bright sun.

Victoria had been very specific to Nina, that she would need to learn all her likes and dislikes in order to be a good servant.

Kathy and Hailey went a step further in their Japanese shows, having a quote-off and seeing who remembered the best lines.

The breakfast was lively, a mix of laughter and light teasing.

Evelyn was busy cleaning the ocean today so she wasn’t here, but she was always welcome in his home.

After breakfast, he got into his suit, ready for the big exam. Nina cleaned up the table as the others got ready for their days.

Silas stood in the foyer, putting on his shoes, feeling the soft leather and watching the sun shine through the colored windows above him.

“Papa~” a voice called.

Turning, he saw Vic walking to him with a wide smile. She was wearing her uniform. With one hand she grabbed his tie and fixed it even though it didn’t need to be fixed.

With a quick kiss on his lips, she whispered.

“Good luck papa.” Then she let go and skipped to her shoes, humming.

Nina was already at the entrance waiting for Victoria.

Raising an eyebrow, he asked Vic, “Are you sure you want to take Nina to the Academy?”

She grabbed her book bag.

“Of course I have to introduce my servant to the world and make sure she knows her place.” Vic giggled.

Glancing at the door, Nina pretended not to hear that.

A small chuckle escaped him.

Kissing Victoria again on the cheek, he gave her a pat on the back and then teleported to the university. It was time for him to take the final exam and be officially recognized as a professor.

The campus was empty, the buildings looking like they were sleeping under the morning sun.

With a step forward, Silas entered the main building, his path clear as he walked towards his destination.

A grin on his lips as he saw who was waiting for him at the door.

Lucifer in all her glory, wearing a black suit that showed off her figure and a clipboard in her hands.

“Good morning Silas. Ready for the final exam?” She asked, a small amused smile on her lips.

He raised an eyebrow.

“No Isaac? Where’s your guard dog? Do you think I’ll behave myself now?” Silas teased her and she shook her head, the white strands of her hair moved.

She had a lot of time to think about things and she came up with a conclusion.

Lucifer walked towards him and stopped in front of him, her clipboard at her side.

“I think I know how you think now,” she said, looking up at him. “And I realize you are not as much of a monster as you appear to be. You still comitted far too many crimes and I will prosecute you but I won’t waste your and my time with unnecessary guards anymore.”

Her words made him feel something strange in his chest.

“Okay, then shall we proceed?” he asked.

She gestured to the door behind her. He walked past her and Lucifer followed, they both went to the exam room. The sound of their footsteps was loud in the empty university halls. The smell of books and dust was strong as they approached the double doors.

Pushing the doors open, Silas walked in and saw the exam room. It was a big open room with a few chairs and tables. All empty. There was also magical equipment along the walls.

The sound of the door closing behind him and he turned around to see Lucifer locking it magically. A wave of mana came out from all the objects in the room, surrounding Silas. It messed with his spatial sense. Interesting. The air felt electric as the magic made his skin tingle.

He was trapped in here. For a bit. But he could get out if he tried.

Lucifer stood a few feet in front of him with the clipboard and a pen in her hand.

“No cheating Silas.”

He smiled and sat down in one of the chairs, letting it squeak. Lucifer grabbed an envelope and took out some papers and then walked to him. Handing the papers over, she spoke.

“This is the written exam. Finish it in 30 minutes.” She looked at her watch and then started to count the seconds. “Any use of space magic is immediate disqualification.”

She walked to the back wall, her red eyes observing him as he looked at the paper. There were 50 questions.

“I’m sure you can sneak in your space magic without me noticing,” Lucifer paused, “But you wouldn’t do that would you?”

Silas laughed. This was too much fun. He took a pen and started to write, not paying attention to her anymore. The time passed and he answered the questions quickly. There were some hard ones about history and the new Hunter laws but he was present for those events so it was easy.

“Time’s up, hand over the paper.” Lucifer’s voice echoed a little in the big room and he teleported the paper in her hand. With a raise of an eyebrow, she accepted the paper and started to flip through it, reading his answers and grading them on the clipboard.

The silence in the room was peaceful. The magic in the air felt nice on his skin, like tiny vibrations that made him smile.

“Do you seriously have nothing better to do than grade these papers yourself? Don’t you have a whole association to run?” He leaned back, one leg crossed over the other.

Clicking her pen, she continued to read and answered his question.

“Berlin’s sealing magic is slowly fading and until it is completely gone, I cannot proceed with my new agenda,” Lucifer replied.

A sudden feeling of cold dread filled his stomach.

“What? His magic is fading?” He teleported instantly and appeared in front of her, his eyes sharp on her face. She didn’t even flinch.

“Unlike water magic, seal magic seems to have an expiration date. Sulena’s seal is weakening and the monsters will eventually get out of their dungeons and start appearing in the real world,” she explained and handed him his paper. A perfect score.

He took a step back, his hand going to his temple as he rubbed it.

Lucifer watched him with a curious expression.

“Since when did you care so much about the dungeons, Silas? I thought you retired from being a hero.” Her question was honest.

With a sigh, he shook his head. Sulena was a problem definitely. But Jupiter, he didn’t even know if the prisoners in Jupiter would break free as well and that would be worse than the dungeons.

Silas turned to look at Lucifer, a frown on his face. The sun was getting higher and blinded him in one eye. Should he tell her about Jupiter? Would those ruby eyes make an intelligent decision with that information or blindly follow some sense of justice that would make the world crumble?
