Chapter 42. Before Greece. Liz POV.
The third semester started. My belly was more than showing now, it was big and it made me waddle like a penguin. I had to use my own healing magic to ease the pain and the strain on my lower back.
Today would be another routine check up. On behalf of Silas of course.
I walked down the stairs, my feet feeling heavy. Holding on to the railing, I watched Silas’ concern grow with each step. He wanted to help but I said no. I wanted to walk myself until my feet fell off, even if I was struggling.
Finally the last step. I breathed a sigh of relief.
My husband was next to me immediately, ready for anything. I smiled.
“You seem more stressed than I am honey,” I said teasingly.
He didn’t reply, just kept a firm hand on my back as I reached the sofa in the living room and sat down.
A cushion under my butt. Another under my back and one for my feet. Then a blanket on top. Silas hovered, watching my every move. Usually check ups were performed in hospitals but Silas refused to have me leave the house in this state, so he brought the doctors to me.
Purple haze of mana filled the living room and Ursula, Katherine and Doctor Hemlia appeared in a flash. Ursula wore her usual S-ranked healer robes, all white and clean. Katherine was in her casual clothes, a shirt and pants with her red hair in a ponytail.
Doctor Hemlia, on the other hand, wore her long white doctor coat with glasses and had a stethoscope around her neck.
She was the only licensed doctor in the room. Kat and Ursula were here for what medicine couldn't do.
“Liz!” Kat greeted me with a smile and rubbed my belly, feeling for the babies inside.
Silas coughed and she rolled her eyes at him.
Ursula set down her briefcase next to the coffee table, next to my husband who sat there, watching her every movement too. The atmosphere was tense with his mana. With every passing day, his trust for people, even my best friend, decreased.
He monitored everyone like a hawk.
Doctor Hemilia took a small step forward and gave a polite smile, her green hair flowing down her back.
“Hello Elizabeth. It is time for the routine check up. Are you experiencing any pain, discomfort or other symptoms?”
Her voice was kind.
I shook my head. Everything was normal so far: the pregnancy had been smooth.
The doctor took out her stethoscope and put the round end to her ear, then she placed the other end on my belly. Her eyes closed to concentrate.
Silas leaned forward, his eyes glued to the scene.
“Liz took five seconds longer to descend the stairs today and the babies kicked three times while she ate pancakes,” he said.
Ursula laughed, she knew about his obsessive habits.
The doctor nodded. Not sure what to say about the five seconds so she didn’t say anything.
Kat smiled and put her hand on my belly, her eyes glowed with magic. A light green glow enveloped me and then my belly. Her life magic was on a league of its own compared to healing magic and even death magic. She could create genuine life in the palm of her hands.
“Uh-oh...” Katherine’s face scrunched.
My breath hitched. Silas immediately was next to me, his mana surrounding me, his eyes were glowing. Kat looked up from my belly to me.
I waited, the anxiety made me shake.
Kat closed her eyes. Her magic still flowing and she took a deep breath.
“I’m sorry Liz,” she said slowly and her voice trembled.
My heart dropped.
No.
My tears fell down my cheeks and I opened my mouth to scream.
“They have his eyes,” Katherine burst out laughing, the tears falling from her eyes.
I almost fainted. I punched Kat in the shoulder.
Turning to look at my husband, I could see he was deep in thought, debating whether to kill her or not, the purple glow becoming brighter in anger.
“Kat!” I scolded, my voice heavy.
My best friend tried to control her laughter, putting both hands to cover her mouth. Even Ursula was chuckling.
A sigh of relief and I hit Kat again on the shoulder, hard this time.
My husband put his hand on my head, stroking my silver locks, his eyes back to their normal violet. After the check up finished, he teleported Ursula and the doctor out of the house, not even giving me time to say goodbye.
It was just Kat, Silas and me now. And I still felt a little faint after that jumpscare.
Katherine hugged me.
“Sorry Lizzie. I couldn’t help it,” she giggled and rubbed my back.
Her smell of fresh flowers calmed me down and I hugged her back.
“Do it again and I’ll make Silas teleport you to Jupiter.” My voice held no remorse for the threat. She could take it.
She chuckled again.
After a second she let go, looking up at my husband who was still standing next to us like a bodyguard.
“Relax Silas, everything is fine. Two little lives are growing healthily and happily, you can go back to being a creep watching your wife waddle around,” Kat teased him, her eyes bright with mischief.
Pregnancy in the new world was a bit different. Some of the symptoms vanished with healing magic yet other ones got enhanced with the high density of mana, so I didn’t puke every morning or have swollen feet but I did crave mana rich food, and the twins in my womb seemed to have more energy than me. They kicked me non stop and that made it hard to walk.
My husband narrowed his eyes at her but didn’t comment.
A hand was offered to me and I took it; Silas helped me stand up and walked me to the kitchen.
The house was always clean, Silas made sure of it. The air smelled like vanilla and it was cozy.
I sat on a chair by the dinner table while Kat went to sit on a chair next to me, her head on my shoulder.
“The expedition for the Mount Olympus Dungeon is planned for next week.” She said, breaking the silence. “I won’t be back for a week or two so I can’t hang out with you but I promise to bring you back some nice mana rich berries from there.” She kissed my temple.
It was a bit saddening to hear her go so soon. Silas hadn't been in a dungeon since before I told him. The raids were harder without him and I knew it and I never said so.
“Take care of yourself Kat,” I smiled. “Come back safe.”
She rolled her eyes.
“Who do you think I am?” She huffed, her eyes looking at Silas who was leaning against the kitchen island, arms crossed. “Someone who would die to a bunch of Greek monsters? Pft no way.”
My husband still wasn’t looking at her. I knew he was listening though.
“Besides someone has to teach these girls to be normal and you two are not the right people for the job,” she laughed, poking my belly.
That made Silas look at her with a grin. She had him there. We weren’t exactly normal people.
Silas came and hugged us, one hand on her shoulder and another on mine.
“Kat you can die after they are safely delivered. Until then you stay alive,” he said.
Katherine scoffed.
“Wow you didn’t have to phrase it like that,” she replied sarcastically.
I leaned my head against his chest.
“I mean it though. Come back safe Kat,” I said.
