Chapter 13.5. The Cabana.
The desert was finished, and the family was currently in a private cabana in the resort. It was spacious and well furnished, a mini kitchen was to the side, and there were three seperate bedroom. One for Silas, Liz and their girls, one for Lisa and Hailey, and one for Anna. His mother refused to bunk with anyone. And she even put up spatial barriers so no one would peek on her while sleeping, as if any of them wanted that. Okay maybe he did.
Silas liked to keep track of his family’s whereabouts, it was normal. A healthy dose of surveillance. Not creepy, just practical.
Right now, Lisa and Anna were in the kitchen, making drinks and talking about the latest gossip in the social circles they belonged to. They were laughing, looking like best friends. Well Anna was basically her mom too so that made sense. And he was happy his sister-in-law bonded with his mom.
Hailey was in her room, taking a shower and singing a pop song horribly. He had to stop listening, his ears were bleeding. The twins were in their shared bedroom, getting ready for bed.
He and his wife were in the living room.
“Honey, there’s a full moon tonight,” Elizabeth said, sitting on the chair next to him as she brushed her wet hair with a towel. Her skin was glistening from the shower and her robe was slightly open.
“Is there?” He put down the book he was reading, his eyes glued on her exposed thigh. The other two women were still closeby in the kitchen, they could see the two of them.
But Elizabeth leaned closer and whispered in his ear, “You know what they say about full moons...”
He swallowed, his blood rushing south.
“They make werewolves come out to play? Are you secretly a wolf, Liz?” He reached for her earlobe, gently rubbing it with his fingers, making her shiver.
She pulled away with a giggle. “No silly. They increase—”
“Fertility?” Anna’s sudden appearance next to Elizabeth made them both jump. She was sitting nex to Liz, a cup of tea in her hand and a sly smirk on her face.
“Mom...” Elizabeth said, her face flushed red. Silas tried to hide his smirk but failed.
Anna sipped her tea before adding, “Oh don’t stop on my account, I didn’t know you were planning on giving me more grandbabies already.”
He coughed and leaned back in his seat, not meeting his mother’s eyes. Elizabeth cleared her throat.
“That’s not what I was going to say...” she tried to defend herself, but her face only got redder. “I meant they are beautiful nights. Good for romantic walks. Right honey?” She looked at him with pleading eyes.
Before Silas could reply, his mom interjected, “Or you know...you could just teleport to your home and have a romantic night there. We’ll be fine here.” She winked at him.
Liz seemed tempted. Her hand crept onto his thigh, making him hard.
“I’m not leaving you girls alone, mom,” Silas protested weakly. He would very much like to be alone with Liz in a moonlit beach somewhere where the wind blew her robe open just a little bit more.
“Always such a stalker. You should learn to loosen up,” Anna said, “I’m A-rank now. Not a little bird that you need to protect.” She patted her chest.
Silas raised his eyebrows at that. Liz and Anna were A-rank, the second highest rank a mage could achieve. But he didn’t like his mom’s confidence. Only S-rank mattered in the end.
He got up and stretched. He really wanted to spend quality time with his wife but his mom needed to be taught a lesson. So he kissed Liz on the cheek and whispered in her ear, “I’ll make it up to you when we go home.”
She pouted but nodded.
With a smile he turned to his mother, who raised an eyebrow. “So you’re not a little bird anymore huh?” He cracked his neck.
Anna sipped her tea, unfazed. “I’m not.”
Shortly after both Vanes were standing on the moon. Silas had teleported them both there without her permission.
It was quiet here, the stars twinkling brightly and Earth looking blue in the distance.
Crossing her arms, her blonde hair floating around her head in the low gravity, she said, “Really? A childish tantrum?”
He smirked.
“Then go home, Anna,” he said stressing her name.
Her eyes narrowed. She absolutely hated being called by her first name from him. She was mom, mommy or ma. Not Anna.
“You are impossible sometimes, you know that?” She shook her head and closed her eyes.
Then she disappeared.
Good. But not enough. His spatial magic reached out to hers and he brought her in front of him. She glared.
He flicked her forehead.
“Oww, stop that!” She tried to bat his hand away but he toyed around with her, his hand vanishing from her reach and reappearing to flick her again.
With a growl, she snapped her fingers and a blast of space energy hit him square in the face, sending him back a few meters on the rocky surface.
“Wow that tickled,” he mocked, dusting off his shirt. “I think my girls can beat you with that level of power.”
Anna huffed. “Silas Vane, I am your mother! Have some respect.” She tried to use the tone she used when she scolded him for breaking vases as a kid.
He chuckled.
“My respect for you has nothing to do with your strength.”
Closing the distance with a flick of his finger he pinched her cheek and pulled it, making her yelp.
“Let go!” She tried to pry his hand off. “You’re such a man-child!”
He grinned and let her go.
She rubbed her red cheek and glared at him. Then a smile slowly crept on her face. A wicked smile.
“You’re gonna get it now.” She said, her mana fluctuating wildly.
Okay. That was too much mana for just a simple playfight. The air around them shifted, cracks forming on the moon surface. She would blow a chunk off this moon. Then Berlin would blame him.
Before she could finish her spell, he pulled her in for a hug. Tight.
She froze, the mana stopping instantly.
He patted her head softly, like a little kid. “There there mom, I didn’t mean to make you mad.” His voice was soothing, his arms warm around her. She smelled like coconut from the sunscreen and a bit of rum.
Anna sighed and hugged him back. “You are a menace,” she muttered, but there was no anger behind it.
They stayed like that for a moment, hugging. She was still wearing a white robe and her breasts were smooshed against his chest. His head was over her shoulder and he was rubbing her back. But stopped when he felt the scars. Old wounds, long healed but never forgotten.
She sensed his tension. Pulling away, she grabbed his face. She looked like she wanted to say something, but changed her mind at the last second.
A pang hit him in the chest. The way she bit her lip and tried to ignore her pain. He knew what she was thinking. Marcus. He ruined her and passed it on Jakob, then he passed that shit onto Lisa.
But those two saved Silas. If it wasn’t for them he would never be here. He would have never met Liz or have two adorable little monsters. Yet, two people close to him had to suffer for that. Why did the world have to be like this? Why didn’t all husbands love their wife and children as much as he did?
Silas pulled his mom close again, her hair tickled his nose.
“Mom I want to show you something,” he whispered. It was time. Pluto. It was a place of mourning, but also a reminder of the cruelty of humans and why he would never let another soul touch his treasure.
He teleported both of them to the small shrine he built on Pluto. The cold air blew and the ground was covered in ice.
Anna’s eyes widened as she took in the scene. The crude rock structure with the names carved into them. Her hand covered her mouth and tears gathered in her eyes.
“Silas...” Her voice cracked and she stumbled forward to touch the shrine. The letters, Marcus Vane and Jakob Vane seemed to glow under her fingertips.
She fell to her knees and cried.
Kneeling beside her, he put his arm around her shoulders as she sobbed. He stayed silent. She didn’t need words right now. Just comfort and someone to lean on.
A few minutes passed. Anna wiped her face with the back of her hand. She took a deep breath and stood up, facing him.
“Why did you bring me here?” Her voice was shaky.
He got up too, brushing away the tears that were still falling from his eyes and then hers. His hands cupped her cheeks.
“Because I’m letting them go. They have caused too much pain and I’m done honoring them.” His voice was firm.
She grabbed his hand and looked into his eyes. “Are you sure? They are still your...family.” She said the last word hesitantly.
He nodded. “You’re more important. So is Lisa and the girls. Marcus and Jakob are just dead men now.”
A sad smile formed on Anna’s face. She leaned in and kissed his forehead.
“Thank you...my son.”
Then he took a step back and raised his hand, palm facing the shrine.
His mana pulsed, crackling with power.
The space around the shrine folded, distorting and collapsing on itself until there was nothing left but a small crater. A final farewell. The weight that had been on his chest lightened. He was free.
With a smile he looked at his mom. She was smiling too.
