March 8, 2014.

The fallout from India's exit at the 2014 Asia Cup wasn't simply a post-mortem.

It read more like a public execution of the selection committee's "stability" argument, staged in front of the entire cricketing nation.

While the tournament itself moved on toward the final between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Mirpur, Indian media had already swung their cameras back to Bengaluru, where the Wolf sat cooling his heels while the national team's middle order slid into a deep freeze without him.

The Studio: "The Over-Reliance Crisis"

Harsha Bhogle: "It's a hauntingly familiar script, isn't it? We saw it in Johannesburg. We saw it in Wellington. And now we've watched it again in Fatullah and Mirpur. The moment Virat Kohli walks back to the pavilion, this Indian batting unit stops looking like a world-beating side and starts resembling a house of cards caught in a hurricane."

Ravi Shastri: "Let's call a spade a spade, Harsha! You have a boy sitting in Bangalore right now, wearing red and gold, who has already taken apart the finest pace attacks on earth in the toughest format the sport has to offer. And the selectors sat there talking about 'stability'? What stability? India lost to Pakistan because the moment Virat fell for five, the rest of that middle order looked like they'd genuinely forgotten which end of the bat to hold."

Akash Chopra: "The numbers make it painfully clear. Kohli averaged 63 across the tournament. That 136 against Bangladesh was a genuine masterclass in building a chase from the front. But look at the Pakistan game. Kohli goes early, and suddenly the pressure becomes a mountain nobody else can climb. This is precisely the role Rudra filled in the Tests. He soaked up that pressure so Virat could play his natural game with far less weight on his shoulders. Take Rocky out of the equation, and Virat is forced to be the anchor and the aggressor at once. That's simply too much to ask of one man."

The Round Table: Ex-Cricketer Analysis

Sourav Ganguly (Guest Analyst): "I genuinely don't understand this white-ball excuse. If a boy is good enough to score hundreds against Steyn and Southee, he is more than good enough to face any spinner Asia has to offer. The BCCI is playing this far too safe. They kept him out to protect him, but nobody protected India's total when Kohli fell. There was no one left to steady that ship."

Navjot Singh Sidhu: "It's like leaving your sword in its scabbard while the enemy stands at the gate! Rocky Rudra isn't some 'long-term prospect' waiting patiently in line. He is a right-now solution, ready today. Meanwhile fans in Bangalore are celebrating his upcoming nineteenth birthday while the team in Mirpur packs its bags early. The optics for this board could hardly be worse."

The Media Hounding: Pointed Questions

Headlines across the major dailies turned merciless, setting the Rudra hype directly against the Mirpur meltdown.

The Times of India - "One-Man Army: Kohli's 189 Runs Not Enough to Mask a Middle-Order Vacuum. Where Was the Wolf?"

Indian Express - "The Stability Myth: How the Selection Committee's Fear of Debuting Rudra Cost India an Asia Cup Final."

Hindustan Times: "Bangalore Celebrates a Birthday, Mirpur Mourns a Defeat. The Rudra-Sized Hole in India's ODI Strategy."

The "Rudra Effect" Discussion

Anchor: "Let's look at the numbers here. Across the last two Test series, whenever Rocky Rudra was out in the middle alongside Virat Kohli, Kohli's own strike rate actually climbed, and this is in Test cricket, mind you. Why would that be? Because the pressure was finally shared between two players instead of resting on one. In this Asia Cup, we watched Virat try to carry everything himself. He's the stand-in captain, the leading run-scorer, and practically the only man showing any real fight. Rocky is eighteen, turning nineteen on the eleventh of March, and yet he already bats like a man with a hundred caps behind him. Does the panel think the BCCI left him out of spite, or was this simply a genuine tactical misjudgement?"

Ajay Jadeja: "It's a huge blunder by the selection committee! They worried about his exposure. Well, look at the exposure now! The entire cricketing world is asking why the most gifted teenager since Sachin Tendulkar was standing at a jersey reveal in Bangalore instead of walking out at number four in a final. The fans have every right to be furious. You cannot ask people to be patient while the team crashes out of tournament after tournament in front of their eyes."

___

The Atmosphere in Bengaluru

While the national team slipped back into India in the dead of night, hoping to dodge the crowds waiting for them, Rocky was still finishing a training session at the Chinnaswamy, sweat soaking through his practice kit under the floodlights.

The contrast could hardly have been starker. The Rudra-maniacs weren't mourning the Asia Cup at all.

If anything, they were treating India's loss as vindication, as proof that everything they'd been saying for weeks had finally been confirmed for the whole country to see.

Fans' Sentiment (Outside the Stadium):

"Let them lose! If the BCCI thinks they can win without Rocky, well, this is exactly what that looks like. Nobody here cares about the Asia Cup anymore. We just want to see Rudra wearing that #11 out there... The selectors wanted stability, and what they got was the stability of a graveyard. Rocky is the only one who can pull this team out of the mess they've made for themselves."

The pressure on the eighteen-year-old had quadrupled overnight.

He hadn't even been part of the squad, and yet somehow he was already being hailed across the country as the saviour who could have spared India the entire embarrassment.

As Rocky walked off the pitch, drenched under the Bangalore lights, he already knew there was more waiting for him.

His agent had pulled him aside earlier that evening with news that Yuvraj's inclusion in the upcoming squad meant something else entirely was about to unfold...
