(A/N: Thanks for your comments regarding the BGT plot. Rudra will be our highest scorer, with Kohli as 2nd. It'll be a contest between them.)
The Bengaluru air was different.
It was cooler, thinner, laced with the scent of blooming jacarandas and the electric charge of high-stakes cricket hanging over the city like weather.
As the glass doors of Kempegowda International Airport slid open, Rocky wasn't met by a breeze at all β he was met by a wall of sound.
"RUDRA! RUDRA! RUDRA!"
The sea of red and gold stretched further than he could take in at once.
Thousands of fans, tipped off hours earlier by social media, had turned the arrivals terminal into something closer to a cauldron than a lobby. Paparazzi leaned hard against the security barriers, camera shutters firing in rapid bursts.
"Rocky! Are you the reason Yuvraj isn't in RCB?"
"Rocky, a word on the Mumbai fans burning Bumrah posters?"
"Rocky, what's your reaction to the BCCI leaving you out of the white-ball squad?"
"Rudra! Is the twelve-crore price tag a burden or a gift?"
He kept his head down, pulse climbing with every step. Beside him, his agent Bunty, a man who genuinely seemed to thrive in exactly this kind of chaos, kept a firm grip on his shoulder.
"Keep moving. Don't stop, don't look back. You sign one autograph, we're stuck here for six hours and somebody gets hurt in the crush."
CISF officers formed a human wedge around them, physically carving a path through the swarm.
Rocky felt hands brushing against his jacket sleeve, heard the pleading calls for just one photo, felt the full, physical weight of a city's expectations pressing in from every direction at once.
Then, almost as suddenly, they were folded into a tinted black SUV that pulled away fast, leaving the roar of the Garden City behind them in the mirrors.
___
The Inner Sanctum: M. Chinnaswamy Stadium
The SUV swept in through the private entrance. Inside, the stadium sat almost eerily quiet, no crowd, no noise, just the strange hush of a place built for forty thousand people currently holding none.
There was something almost reverent about it.
In the executive boardroom, Vijay Mallya was already waiting, looking every bit the man the papers loved to call the architect of the heist βcommanding, unhurried, entirely at ease in a room built around his own reputation.
The moment Rocky stepped through the door, Mallya's whole face broke open into a grin.
He threw his arms wide and pulled Rocky into a firm, cologne-heavy hug.
"Son! I told you," he said, stepping back but keeping one hand planted firmly on Rocky's shoulder, fatherly and proud. "I told you I'd have you in red and gold. No matter what it cost, no matter whose rules stood in the way."
(A/N: He did. When Rocky went to Bunty agency.)
He steered Rocky toward the window overlooking the outfield, the grass a deep, saturated green even in the fading light. "You know, when I first told Virat what I was planning β skip the marquee names, ignore the legends everyone else was fighting over, put the entire purse on one man... He looked at me like I'd genuinely lost the plot. Told me, 'Sir, your math is terrible. We need a squad, not one player.'" Mallya let out a deep, booming laugh at the memory. "And everyone in this sport knows Virat's own math has never been his strong suit. He couldn't see it then. He sees it now."
Rocky laughed too, feeling the last of the airport's tension finally drain out of him.
It was common knowledge in the dressing rooms that mathematics and Kohli didn't share a very friendly history, though it was strange how well he could calculate while chasing.
"The board thought putting you on the open market would break Mumbai's little monopoly," Mallya continued, his voice dropping into something more conspiratorial. "They called it balancing the league. What they forgot is that I don't play for balance. I play to win, and I play bold. By the time anyone realised I'd been sitting on my entire purse for exactly one name, the gavel had already come down. There's nothing left for anyone to object to now. The 'Rocky Rule' is just a trophy on my shelf at this point."
He leaned in slightly, the grin widening further. "And don't worry about interference β there won't be any. That whole rule was pushed through at the very top, and I suspect the man who pushed it is regretting it more than anyone else in this country right now, given he never even put in a bid for you."
He paused, clearly savouring the image in his head, and couldn't hold the laugh back a second longer.
____
On the mahogany table sat the new 2014 RCB jersey, crisp, vibrant, carrying the weight of a million dreams stitched into a single piece of fabric.
For Rocky, this felt different from anything else he'd worn.
In Test cricket, it was pristine white, no number at all. On Mumbai's domestic circuit, he'd played under a temporary, unofficial tag nobody outside the dressing room ever bothered to remember. But this was the IPL.
A new team.
This was his brand.
"We've got the printers standing by, Rocky," Mallya said, gesturing toward the kit manager hovering near the door. "What's it going to be?"
Rocky didn't hesitate. "Eleven," he said, firm and immediate. "March eleventh. The day my grandmother found me on her doorstep. The day my life actually began."
The room went quiet for a moment, touched by the weight sitting behind such a simple number. Mallya nodded slowly, something unusually solemn passing through his eyes for once.
"Eleven... The beginning of the legend. I like it."
___
As Rocky pulled the jersey over his shoulders for the official contract photos, the emptiness of the stadium felt heavier than it should have.
The rest of the squad, Virat, Bhuvi, Shami and the others were away in Bangladesh for the Asia Cup. The selectors had left him out of that squad entirely, citing the need for "stability" and "long-term grooming," language Rocky understood well enough to see through.
It was simply the board's quiet way of keeping his hype contained before the IPL took over completely.
He stood alone in front of the tall mirrors, the red and gold fabric settling against his frame.
"No Virat. No Gayle. No Abd. Just me and the stadium," he thought, glancing at the eleven now sitting on his back.
He walked out onto the balcony and looked over the empty stands that would, in a matter of weeks, be screaming his name back at him.
He wasn't a small player anymore. He was a twelve-crore statement.
The man who had broken the BCCI's own rules without needing to say a single word about it.
"Enjoy the silence while it lasts, Rocky," Bunty said from the doorway, checking his watch without really looking at it. "Because once the Asia Cup and the World T20 wrap up and the boys are back... this city is going to burn with expectations."
Rocky just smiled, eyes fixed on the pitch where he'd soon be making his stand.
____
The digital landscape of Indian cricket shattered completely after the viral video.
At exactly six o'clock, Royal Challengers Bangalore's official accounts dropped the reveal video.
It was shot cinematically, high-contrast lighting making the crimson and gold pop hard against the deep green of the Chinnaswamy turf. The camera tracked Rocky from behind as he walked through the stadium tunnel, the focus pulling sharp on the back of his jersey β the bold, gold-bordered numerals: 11.
He turned toward the lens, adjusting his collar with a calm, almost predatory stillness, before the screen cut to black over three words: THE WOLF ARRIVES.
The reaction was instant. At eighteen, Rocky had already built a following that bordered on the religious, rivalling even Kohli's cult-like fanbase.
His so-called Rudra-maniacs didn't care that he hadn't played a single white-ball match for India yet, that felt like a formality at this point, a matter of when rather than if.
He had already proven himself in the IPL, in the CLT20, and in Test cricket, the hardest and the most ultimate format there was.
___
Fans' reactions on the Twitter
@RudraKingdom: "Look at that aura. Eighteen years old and he already owns the stadium. The jersey isn't wearing him, he's wearing the jersey. Best in the world, no debate needed."
@KohliRudra_Era: "The King and the Wolf, same dressing room. It's basically over for the rest of the IPL. Just hand RCB the trophy now and save everyone the trouble."
@PureCricket_: "I don't care about stats or balance sheets. I see Rocky Rudra in red, and I see greatness standing right there. If he's got a million fans, I'm one of them. If he's only got one, it's me."
@OdishaPower: "From a doorstep in Cuttack to a throne in Bangalore. Number eleven is going to be legendary. March eleventh can't come fast enough for his nineteenth birthday!"
@CricGod_Rudra: "People were arguing whether he's worth twelve crore. After this video, he's worth the entire sixty-crore purse on his own. He's the main character of this whole league."
@NammaChinnaswamy: "Finally, someone who matches Virat's intensity out there! Red looks absolutely lethal on him. Welcome home, Rocky!"
@RCB_TillIDie: "Mallya pulled off the heist of the century and this is the receipt. Seeing Rocky in our colours feels like a fever dream. That eleven looks so much better than the two hundred he wore in blue ever did."
@BangaloreBulls: "I've supported this team since 2008. We've had legends wear this jersey, but Rocky brings a different kind of fear entirely. The Wolf is going to hunt at the Chinnaswamy."
@Anti_Paltan: "Hey @mipaltan, how does it feel watching your own domestic star look like royalty in red and gold? Blue was always too small for him. π #RockyRule"
@Wankhede_Tears: "Mumbai Indians fans are currently searching for a delete button for their own memories. Rocky in RCB colours is the ultimate heartbreak, live and in HD."
@GullyCricket_Expert: "Imagine letting go of the best eighteen-year-old on the planet over 'strategy.' MI management is somewhere quietly losing their minds right now. Red suits him better than blue ever did."
@Rudra_FanMI: "I'm technically an MI fan, but I'm changing my display picture to Rocky in RCB tonight. Management failed us on this one. Red and gold looks elite on the Wolf."
@LungiDance_CSK: "Even as a die-hard CSK fan, I have to admit it...Rocky looks genuinely dangerous in this kit. Mumbai messed this one up badly. Total clowns."
@Mumbai_Logics: "The trolling is well earned at this point. We lost a diamond and handed it over gift-wrapped. Look at him, he looks like he was born to wear that jersey. Number eleven is going to haunt this franchise for years."
@WolfPack_RCB: "The blue era's done. The red era starts now. Thanks for raising him, Mumbai β we'll take it from here, trophies and all. βοΈ"
___
Within hours, the number eleven jersey was already up on billboards along MG Road and Brigade Road.
The media wasn't covering a signing anymore, they were documenting something closer to a cultural shift, and everyone seemed to know it.
Cricinfo News Flash: "The '11' Factor. Rocky Rudra, who will be turning nineteen on March 11, has officially claimed his number for RCB. The commercial pull of this teenager has now surpassed almost every senior professional in the league. RCB have struck gold twice in one signing."
While the internet busied itself worshipping his "aura" and trolling Mumbai Indians over their tactical misstep, Rocky himself stayed inside the RCB facility, away from all of it.
He wasn't scrolling through any of the praise.
He was standing in front of his locker, looking at the number eleven jersey hanging there under the fluorescent light.
To the fans outside, it was a fashion statement and a weapon for bragging rights. To him, it was a doorstep in Cuttack and the grandmother who'd given him an actual life to live.
He was eighteen, weeks away from nineteen, and for tonight at least, he was just a boy in a red shirt who still had a world to prove right, and a city to prove wrong.
