...

The wind sweeping through Eden Park in Auckland carried a biting, sub-antarctic chill, yet inside the enclosed practice nets, the localized atmosphere felt scorching.

For three consecutive hours, Rocky Rudra stood deep in the crease, facing a relentless barrage from a combination of elite local net bowlers and the primary Indian pace trio.

The white leather ball swung like a wild pendulum in the humid, overcast Kiwi air, yet the sound emanating from the center of Rocky's Kookaburra Wolf Edition remained a rhythmic, violent crack.

He avoided nicking a single delivery. He refused to let himself be beaten for raw pace.

His footwork functioned as a masterclass in modern precision, shifting his weight directly into the line of fire well before the bowlers managed to complete their follow-throughs.

Virat Kohli, who was on his first ever tour as the undisputed Test Captain, stood casually by the netting.

Leaning his weight onto his own bat handle, an expansive, proud grin spread across his face.

Beside him, Duncan Fletcher, the notoriously stoic head coach, checked his stopwatch before offering a definitive, rare nod of approval.

"That's Enough, Rocky," Fletcher called out. "Step out. If you hit any more, the management will be forced to purchase an entirely new crate of leather balls for the rest of the squad."

With a nod, Rocky walked out of the netting enclosure, pulling off his sweat-drenched helmet and wiping his forehead, Virat stepped forward and slapped him hard across the shoulder.

"Some serious form there, Vice Captain! Seriously. I've never seen a player move that fast into a short-ball. That innate game instinct of yours is like a fucking cheat code at this point."

"Language, Virat!"

___

Later that evening, the squad gathered inside the dressing room.

Every face reflected complete focus.

The 2014 tour of New Zealand represented no tropical holiday.

The Black Caps, commanded by Brendon McCullum, maintained a global reputation for being the ultimate "nice guys" of the sport—right up until they transformed into ruthless assassins on their own hyper-green tracks.

Duncan Fletcher stepped heavily toward the large whiteboard.

"Listen up. In South Africa, the primary challenge remained bounce. Here, the battle centers on the shifting wind and lateral movement. The ball wobbles continuously, frequently changing direction even after passing the blade. Furthermore, Eden Park functions as a rugby ground, the boundaries behind the wicket measure ridiculously short."

"For the bowling unit, you possess zero margin for error. For the batsmen, you must commit to playing late... exceptionally late."

He paused, his sharp eyes scanning the assembled players in the room.

"The media here thinks the SA win was a fluke because of their pitches. They maintain the narrative that an Indian lineup crumbles against a swinging Kookaburra in freezing conditions."

"Boys! Go and prove them wrong!"

Virat stood up, tracking the names written across the board.

"That is our definitive XI. Rocky, you remain at the top of the order alongside Vijay. We require a rock-solid foundation to blunt their opening burst."

Virat turned his gaze toward Rocky, offering a subtle, definitive nod that invited him to address the room.

This marked the historic moment Rocky would speak to the national team in an official leadership capacity.

Rocky stood up smoothly. He showed none of the nervous energy typical of an eighteen-year-old rookie, instead, he exuded the quiet presence of a veteran who had spent an entire lifetime navigating high-stakes trenches.

He glanced toward MS Dhoni, who offered a small, highly encouraging wink, before facing the rest of the senior legends.

"I will keep this brief," Rocky began, his voice remaining low yet carrying an innate, vibrating resonance that instantly silenced the entire room. "I've spent the afternoon reading the local New Zealand papers. I've seen the television broadcasts. The media openly calling us 'One-Series Wonders.' They're saying that we achieved victory in South Africa solely because the sun was out. In their minds, our efforts are just a punchline for an outdated joke regarding Indian traveling form."

He gripped the top edge of his chair, his knuckles turning white under the pressure.

"I personally don't like being a punchline. Tomorrow, I want us to show the world that we aren't just here to compete. We're coming to hunt them in their own backyard. If the world wants to call us arrogant, let them."

"Since they don't believe us, they should be prepared to personally near witness with their own eyes, what happens when you poke a sleeping lion!"

"If becoming the villain helps this team win, then I'll wear that mask happily... They don't like us because they're afraid... They're afraid that New Zealand is about to suffer the exact same fate as South Africa—utterly humiliated on their own home turf."

Rocky scanned the room, his intense gaze locked directly onto the pace attack.

"When you bowl tomorrow, don't just look for the wicket. Look for their spirit. When we occupy the crease, don't just look to score runs. Break their will to bowl! Make them runs like it's a marathon!"

"We represent the new India. We stop waiting for luck to favor us. We take exactly what belongs to us."

The silence that followed was heavy, and thick—broken only by Virat Kohli suddenly exploding into a loud, fiercely rhythmic clap.

Within seconds, the entire room erupted to follow his lead.

The emotional energy inside the four walls shifted instantly from tactical preparation to something genuinely dangerous.

Even the notoriously calm guy like Zaheer Khan, who looked like he had no interest in anything, sat forward, a chilling glint of pure steel reflecting in his eyes.

He understood why Dhoni was so adamant on appointing Rudra as deputy, skipping guys like Rahane and Rohit, even going as far to oppose the entire BCCI.

'It seems you've already seen something special in him, don't you, Mahi?'

He mused internally as his eyes landed on MS Dhoni who was slapping his thigh, then shifted his eyes towards Rudra who was rubbing his neck after getting teased by Virat, Ishant and others.

'The future is in good hands. I think it's time...'

Match Day: Eden Park

February 6, 2014.

The sun struggled to break through the overcast Auckland sky.

The "Ring of Fire" Eden Park, was packed with fans in black jerseys, waiting to see the world-renowned Indian batting line-up crumble under the swing of Tim Southee and Trent Boult.

The pitch was a vivid, emerald green.

It looked more like a garden than a cricket deck.

The morning air at Eden Park was sharp enough to cut, a damp Auckland mist clinging to the lush, emerald outfield.

For the Indian team, this represented a radical shift from the baking heat of Durban.

The local media, spearheaded by the New Zealand Herald, had spent the last forty-eight hours running provocative headlines like "The Durban Fluke?" and "Green Mamba Awaits the Indian Youngsters."

The comprehensive 4-0 defeat India had just suffered in the preceding ODI series had heavily emboldened the Kiwis.

They no longer saw the world-conquering force that had rewritten history in South Africa.

They saw a transitional unit that had completely forgotten how to counter the moving ball.

The Pre-Match Analysis: The Sky Sports Box

Inside the commentary box, veteran Ian Smith was joined by an analytical Simon Doull and the booming presence of Ravi Shastri.

Ian Smith: "Welcome to Eden Park. It's a rugby cathedral turned into a cricket cauldron today. The pitch? It's so incredibly green you could graze sheep on it, and Brendon McCullum's eyes must be lighting up. But look at that young man down there, Simon. Rocky Rudra. The 'Wolf' is officially in the building."

Simon Doull: "He's in the building, Smithy, but he is walking straight into the firing line. The local press has been utterly ruthless. They're classifying him as a 'Flat-Track Bully' who simply got lucky on high South African bounce. Today, he encounters the treacherous lateral movement of Southee and Boult in conditions that make the ball talk. If he survives the opening hour, he's a genius. If he fails, that premium Kookaburra Wolf sticker will look like nothing more than expensive marketing fluff."

Ravi Shastri: (His voice vibrating with immense intent) "Don't you believe that for a single second, Doully! I watched the kid in the nets yesterday. He moved far beyond standard practice, he operated like his ego was hurt. The local media has actively poked the beast. You witnessed the press conference, right? Virat displayed extreme aggression yesterday, and I guarantee young Rudra maintains the exact same mindset. When an Indian player possessing that level of generational talent decides to play the bad guy, the opposition usually ends up as the victim!"

"Perfect Textbook example in the past was Ricky Ponting and in present, it maybe Rocky Rudra... who knows."

The Toss

At exactly 10:00 AM local time, Virat Kohli walked out onto the turf for his very first official toss as Test Captain.

Beside him stood the ever-unpredictable Brendon McCullum, who wore a smug expression as if he harbored a secret he couldn't wait to share with the crowd.

The match referee, Ranjan Madugalle, stepped forward.

The coin flipped high into the grey, overcast sky.

Virat Kohli: "Heads."

The coin landed firmly on the emerald grass.

Heads.

Virat Kohli: "We'll have a bowl first, Ian."

Virat stepped up to the microphone next, his eyes flashing with that familiar, razor-sharp competitive fire.

"We are fully aware of what the local media has been projecting over the last week. We refuse to answer their critiques with words. We got a young, incredibly hungry Vice-Captain and a bowling unit fully prepared to steamroll through lineups. We want to exploit the heavy moisture trapped in this surface and definitively set the tone for the remainder of this series right now.

Ian Smith: (On the microphone) "A fascinating, highly aggressive move from the new skipper! Kohli wins the toss and India elects to bowl. Brendon, were you planning to execute the same strategy?"

McCullum grinned broadly, completely unfazed by the outcome.

"Absolutely. It's a textbook bowl-first deck. But look, we are completely comfortable batting here. We've formulated a highly specific tactical plan for their youngsters. We know Rocky and Virat thrive when the ball comes onto the bat at a true pace, so we intend to make them work for every single inch of territory today."

Hearing this Virat just shrugged then shook hands and walked off.

___

As the deep bells of Eden Park chimed through the crisp morning air, the New Zealand openers, Peter Fulton and Hamish Rutherford, began their long walk to the middle.

Yet, the overwhelming focus of the stadium remained entirely locked on the visiting side.

The Indian team huddled tightly near the boundary rope.

Virat Kohli occupied the center, but Rocky Rudra stood right beside him, his jaw clenched tightly and his eyes hidden behind dark, aggressive wraparound shades.

He radiated the intense, unyielding aura that looked more like military commander, than a cricketer.

"Remember guys," Rocky's low voice drifted clearly over the huddle, silencing any remaining chatter. "They view us as a joke. Let's ensure they completely forget how to laugh by the time Lunch is called."

The huddle broke instantly.

The Indian unit sprinted onto the turf, led by a fiercely fired-up Ishant Sharma and a locked-in Mohammed Shami.

The packed stands roared, a massive sea of black jerseys chanting "Southee! Southee!" toward Tim Southee, who stood boundary-side watching his batsmen entering the ground.

Unmoved by the deafening noise, the Indian slip cordon—Vijay, Rocky, and Kohli—stood like statues at the top of the crease.

Rocky claimed his position at Second Slip, perfectly flanking Virat.

Adjusting his sunglasses, his eyes systematically scanned the surface, reading the dampness and calculating the impending lateral movement.

Glancing toward the giant stadium screen, Rocky spotted a local fan proudly hoisting a neon sign: "Where's your wolf now, Rudra?"

Rocky refrained from smiling. He simply tapped his hand firmly against his heart, then pointed his index finger directly down at the emerald pitch.

Ian Smith: "The field is set and the new era has arrived. Kohli and Rudra. The King and the Wolf. This stands as an outright battle for global respect."

___

The First Over: Shami to Rutherford

The overcast sky hung over Eden Park like a bruised purple weight. The vibrant, grassy pitch—heavy with trapped morning moisture—offered a fast bowler's paradise.

Mohammed Shami turned at the top of his mark, the red Kookaburra gleaming in his palm.

At the striker's end, Hamish Rutherford tapped his willow with visible nervousness as the Auckland crowd reached a fever pitch.

0.1: Shami to Rutherford

Shami steamed in smoothly, hitting a flawless length immediately. The ball pitched on middle and leg, angled into the batsman, and then zipped away violently late off the surface.

Rutherford lunged forward blindly, his bat finishing a country mile away from the leather.

Simon Doull: "Oh, that is an absolute beauty! A total peach to start the Test match. It literally hissed past the outside edge. Look at that exceptional carry into Dhoni's gloves!"

0.2: Shami to Rutherford

Maintaining the exact same line, Shami shortened his length by a fraction. The ball rose awkwardly off the seam, completely squaring Rutherford up in his crease.

The delivery clipped the high emblem of his thigh pad and died harmlessly in the dirt right in front of Rocky at second slip.

Ravi Shastri: "He's jumping around like a cat on a hot tin roof, Smithy! Shami is asking heavy questions, and Rutherford looks utterly clueless. He is a very lucky man to still be breathing out there."

0.3: Shami to Rutherford

Shami adjusted his angle wider of the crease, firing the ball across the left-hander. Rutherford committed to a remarkably loose, dangerous drive so early in the day.

The red leather whistled past the edge yet again.

Ian Smith: "Another one! That is three consecutive near-misses. He is living on borrowed time, and listen to the sheer volume coming from that slip cordon!"

As the ball became dead, the Indian cordon aggressively crowded the striker.

Rocky walked forward, his voice crisp, clear, and cutting.

"You're still guessing, Hamish. You have got no idea which way it's going, do you? You're just standing there waiting for the one that has your name written on it.

Kohli chimed in while looking at the batsman, delivering the perfect assist.

"He's terrified, Rocky. Look at his hands. He knows he's on borrowed time!"

0.4: Shami to Rutherford

Shami produced a classic, brutal in-swinger. The ball nipped back sharply through the gate, missing the inside edge by a coat of varnish before thudding heavily into the front pad.

Shami & The Cordon: "HOWZAT?!"

Umpire: (Shakes head calmly) "Not Out."

Simon Doull: "That was incredibly close! Two inches lower and he was a dead man plumb. Four deliveries, four near-disasters. Rutherford is surviving on raw, unadulterated luck."

0.5: Shami to Rutherford

Shami returned instantly to the "Corridor of Uncertainty," hitting the seam flawlessly. The ball landed on a length, angling inward to lure Rutherford into a desperate leg-side flick, before seaming away violently off the deck.

Rutherford was completely found out, his feet utterly stuck in the crease. He reached out with hard hands, and a thin, highly audible snick echoed through the suddenly quiet stadium.

The ball flew low, flat, and fast straight toward Virat Kohli at first slip. The captain barely had to shift his weight, he cupped the leather at chest height and immediately unleashed a guttural roar into the Auckland sky.

Ravi Shastri: "EDGED AND TAKEN! THE WOLF PACK STRIKES! India draws first blood! Rutherford's luck completely runs out on the fifth ball, and Shami delivers a massive breakthrough! Look at that explosive celebration!"

Ian Smith: "Stunned silence here at Eden Park. The home crowd was entirely geared up for a party, but India has thoroughly crashed the venue within five minutes. And Ravi, look at the sheer intensity. Their actions transcend a standard celebration... They are hunting in perfect sync."

The Indian unit bypassed a quiet, conventional high-five.

They sprinted toward Shami like a pride of ravenous lions. Rocky arrived first, aggressively grabbing Shami's jersey in a frantic, high-octane embrace. Kohli was screaming directly into the heavens, the veins in his neck bulging with pure adrenaline.

It was a terrifying, unified display of dominance.

Simon Doull: "It feels entirely different now, doesn't it? During the South Africa tour, that hyper-aggressive fire belonged almost exclusively to Rocky and Virat. But look at them today. Shami, Ishant, Vijay—even the naturally quiet characters are operating in absolute alignment. This is a completely transformed Indian side. They have completely abandoned the 'gentle' approach to touring."

Ravi Shastri: "Precisely, Doully! But today, the virus has officially spread. Look at Ishant Sharma pacing at the fine-leg boundary—he looks completely ready to tear in. Look at Vijay's posture at third slip. The entire unit has adopted a ruthless, unapologetic bad-boy persona. They completely abandon the traditional desire to be liked by foreign crowds. They want to be feared, and right now, they are dictating the terms. The Kiwis now have a massive mountain to climb!"

As a dejected Hamish Rutherford walked back to the pavilion with his head bowed, he had to trudge directly past a stone-faced Rocky.

The white noise of the partisan crowd began to ripple as the giant screen flashed the arrival of Kane Williamson, the Kiwis golden boy, who walked directly into a psychological furnace entirely prepared to consume him.

Mohammed Shami stood calmly at the top of his bowling mark, his fingers tracing the prominent, upright seam of the red Kookaburra.

In the Commentary Box

Ian Smith: "Welcome back to the commentary box. If you are just tuning in, you have missed a morning masterclass in psychological warfare and seam movement. New Zealand stands at a precarious 0 for 1 after just five deliveries. Shami has already dismantled Rutherford, and now Williamson steps into a completely transformed, incredibly hostile slip cordon."

Simon Doull: "The tactical positioning here from Virat Kohli is very interesting, Smithy. He's stationed himself at first slip, Rocky Rudra is hovering like a shadow at second, and Murali Vijay is locked in at third. And, let's not forget, MS Dhoni behind there too...They are standing so close to each other that it's feels like they're virtually inviting the outside edge on a surface that is behaving like a green trampoline."
