Modern Family: The Singer

Chapter 128: Lessons

[3rd POV]

"We'd love to get started. But uh...how? Like, what do we do to get started in the first place?" Kendall asked, looking a little confused at her statement. She, once again, had no idea what she was doing.

Which is why she was here in the first place.

Billie chuckled at her words.

"We just need to hear your voices and how good they are. I can tell from your words that a simple song to test yourself should be easy enough for you to do. So how about...hmm, how about we do something that the two of you both know and like? Any songs that might fit that?" Billie asked, as the two looked at each other and nodded.

"Somewhere over the rainbow. The one that you made" Kylie said, making Billie smile.

"Well then, let's hear it. I'll have you start Kendall. And don't worry if you make mistakes, it's only natural since you are new. Just try the best you can" Billie said, as the teen breathed in deeply, looking nervous as she entered the recording booth. Since it was the best place to do it, since it would block out all the outside noise, making it so she could focus solely on singing. And Billie and Haley could only really hear her.

Slowly, they began to hear the ukulele play in the background as Billie tinkered with a few things, before they heard her voice begin to echo throughout the room.

Her rendition of the song was actually pretty good for her age. There was some mistakes, like messing up the pitch of a few parts, or accidentally stumbling over her own words. But nothing that a few practice runs could not fix.

'Hmm, the voice coach was right, she does have potential' Billie thought, confirming that she would be worth teaching, and could genuinely be good in the future if she put enough practice into it.

Whether or not she would actually do that is an entirely different thing. As quite frankly Billie did not think she would continue to practice and grow and ask for more of these sessions. Or at least not after the first few.

She would come to realize that singing is not nearly as easy as many think it is, and that it truly is a draining profession. Nothing compared to a nine to five of course, but it was still not like anything she had done before, since Kendall had never really worked a day in her life.

Which made sense considering her age.

She had done some modeling, and stuff like that for advertisements and such. But none of that was particularly draining or time consuming. It was just kind of monotonous and boring. As you basically just did the same thing over and over and over. You did that until you got it right, which could take a few tries to dozens mattering on how precise they want to be and how difficult it is.

Whereas singing just took a LOT of practice, a LOT of memorization, and some other stuff. All combining to make it more difficult than a large majroity of modeling based jobs. It was only the highest end modeling and the most difficult modeling that could compare.

Nothing that Kendall would be doing. At least not until she was a lot older and capable of that.

After listening to the song in it's entirety, Billie motioned for Kendall to come out.

"So did I do good? Or was it terrible like I think it was?" Kendall asked, getting a chuckle from Billie.

"You did as good as I was expecting, Kendall. You are untrained and don't know much about certain methods that help a lot with some of the mistakes that you were making. Even with those mistakes your voice is genuinely great, and I can absolutely see you becoming a proper singer. You just need some refining, which is the whole purpose of you coming to learn from us" Billie replied, being completely truthful too.

From what she heard from that little snippet, she did have a ton of potential. It was just that she was nervous, and had never really done anything like this before. So she needed some time to get used to it as well.

"That's...thank you" Kendall replied, a little embarrassed before Billie looked over at Kylie.

"You ready Kylie?" Billie asked, getting a bright smile and a nod as she walked into the booth.

Giving her the thumbs up, Billie began to listen to Kylie and blinked more and more the longer she listened. With even Haley stilling and listening to her voice. And Kendall also was looking at her sister in surprise.

Her voice was actually incredible.

'...Okay that is definitely not the same as my past life' Billie thought, knowing for a fact that the Kylie from her past life was not a singer even remotely close to this level. She had made a few songs, but it was pretty much entirety reliant on autotune and the like.

But this was raw, and genuine.

"Whoa..." Kendall muttered, agreeing that her little showing was incredible.

Kylie soon left the room, a smile on her face as she looked at the one person that looked like she would actually teach her what she has been wanting to know for so long now.

"How did I do?" Kylie asked, as she looked at the three others in the room, all of them silent. At least they were, but Billie was inwardly contemplating a few things about the girl before speaking.

"You made some mistakes, similar to Kendall, but I have to admit that your voice is genuinely one of the best I have ever seen, in your age group at least" Billie replied bluntly, not deciding to sugar coat it.

Kendall didn't seem insulted, if anything she almost looked to be agreeing with it which is an interesting choice. But she assumed that Kendall knew about Kylie's talent to some level. Probably not the full extent of it, but enough to have a feeling that she was naturally talented in the area.

"So, now that I've got a general layout of the two of you and your skills and weaknesses, we can officially start the teaching session and start to show you some great techniques that you can use to improve in the next few sessions, granted we actually do multiple session" Billie said, as the two nodded.

"We are one hundred percent doing more lessons" Kendall said, not finding any reason to not to, especially when they have only just started and already learned so much.

Hearing the response, Billie smiled, and began to speak.

"Well then, let's get onto our first proper lesson!"
