Chapter 117: Demon King
"You put a lot of time into drawing this," Azrael said with a soft sigh.
[I got the anime knowledge from your brain, now shut up and watch.]
Azrael just shook his head.
He knew the video was not something the system mandated for him to see the new functions.
It was just something...
"Wait, you don’t have a name," Azrael said, realizing now that he had always called the AI "system," even if they were not the same.
[Thanks for realizing now, but you can think about that later.]
The system’s tone carried exasperation, as if it was tired of telling Azrael to watch.
Azrael nodded and focused on the screen.
In front of the millions, a figure stood above a platform, looking down on all of them.
It was none other than Azrael.
Well, a 2D animated version of him.
But it was very well drawn.
In his hand was none other than Zerathen.
Its tip was pointed forward, over the crowd beneath.
Then the video stopped.
[The path of the Demon King is not to be walked alone. A Demon King must have their own subjects.]
Azrael raised a brow.
"Why did you stop so abruptly?" he asked.
The video was just getting interesting.
[The next scene got too complex," the system replied with a sigh. "You can watch it in the future when I get better.]
Azrael furrowed his brows, but nodded soon after.
"So, the functions?" he asked.
[Don’t be in so much of a hurry,] the system snorted.
Azrael nodded, shifting further into the bed.
[System updated functions:
Subject Contract: Creates a contract between the Demon King and a person. Essence use scales with range.
Subject Analysis: Analyzes the surroundings for potential subjects.
Mission Assignment: Assigns tasks to subjects and sets rewards.
...]
The list went on.
Azrael counted over 20 functions in just one glance.
"Bro, were you waiting until now before you bombarded me with this many things?" Azrael could not help but ask.
The list was just too long.
But the system did not reply. Not yet.
[Three new quests have been generated.]
[Quest: Contract with your first subject.]
[Quest Reward: One Gene Evolution Serum.]
[Quest: As a king, you need your own domain. Conquer one planet in the universe as your base.]
[Reward: Unknown.]
[Main Quest: Create a body for the system.]
[Quest Rewards: One Fragment of the Original Sin, one Infernal Grade Skill Fruit, and partial knowledge about Earth.]
Azrael stared at the system’s screen with shock.
The first quest, he understood.
But the second one.
"Do you think I would want to create a body for you?" Azrael asked with a crooked smile.
[That’s what the quest says, so, yeah,] the system replied with a confident tone.
"My dear, you have gotten it wrong."
[I can’t force you,] the system replied with a sigh. [You would have to lose those juicy rewards.]
"Fine by me," Azrael replied with a shrug, as if the rewards were not worth it to him.
[Young man, you are toying with forces beyond your power,] the system replied with a slightly higher voice.
"Did your update come with a mute function?" Azrael asked, lying fully on the bed.
The system did not reply for a while.
[Once you make up your mind, the blueprint is in the system’s inventory.]
Azrael still did not reply. He only faced the wall.
[And you are still forgetting the name you promised me,] the system said again.
"Oh, yeah," Azrael said, lifting his body.
[So you could reply to that, huh?] the system asked with a middle finger emoji.
Azrael ignored it, stroking his chin in contemplation.
"You sound feminine, which is weird, by the way," Azrael muttered beneath his breath.
[What’s weird about that?]
Azrael did not reply.
"Feminine name, feminine name..." Azrael repeated, tapping his chin slowly as he thought of a name.
"I really don’t know why I am thinking this much about a name. Dumb should go really well," Azrael said mid-thought.
Just then, he felt a sting on his chest.
The burn on his chest began to spread faster than it did before.
Azrael groaned as he took the pill out of his ring.
Without hesitation, he threw it into his mouth.
At the same time, he covered the wound with a patch of ice.
For a few minutes after that, Azrael said no other word.
The pain began to recede gradually.
But no matter how much it reduced, the area of the spread did not shrink.
Azrael pulled his shirt off.
A weird-looking purple scar tore from the centre of his chest up towards his collarbone.
From its surface, smoke drifted out slowly.
A slow hiss escaped Azrael’s lips as he looked at it.
[It was not spreading before,] the system said in a low voice. [It seems like the suppressor itself has a side effect if it is not used within the 3-hour limit.]
Azrael nodded calmly.
"Seems like it," Azrael said, buttoning his shirt again.
"I wonder how I will sleep now."
The system first replied with a raised-brow emoji.
[You are at Tier 6. You know you don’t need sleep, right?]
Azrael shrugged.
"Sleeping is just kinda cool," he said. "But now that you mentioned it, you can just wake me up every three hours to use the pill."
[If you created a body for me, I could be feeding it to you directly,] the system replied.
Azrael waved it off.
"Now, a name for you."
He thought for a moment before speaking.
"Aria. It seems okay for you."
[If that’s the best you could come up with, then who am I to refuse?] the system... Aria replied.
Azrael smiled.
"I would be counting on you to wake me in three hours then, Aria."
A thumbs-up emoji popped up on the system’s screen.
Azrael ignored it before he lay fully in his bed.
"Good night."
[It is midnight, dummy.]
Azrael shook his head with a smile.
Unconsciously, his eyes snapped shut as he fell into a deep sleep.
