Chapter 116: System Update
The door clicked open as it scanned the card Azrael placed on its sensor.
Azrael stared at the interior of the supposedly basic room.
Yes, it was inferior compared to his room, but using that as a standard was just too high.
It was the room of the direct heir of one of the greatest clans in the universe.
Compared to what was meant to be available to the public, this was indeed good.
In the center of the room, a white bed frame carried a mattress covered in white sheets.
A white light shone from the ceiling, illuminating the room in its brilliance.
"I wonder how those higher-grade rooms are," Azrael mused aloud as he stepped into the room, shutting the door behind him.
Then it hit him.
This was the highest floor in the building, and apparently, there was no distinction between the rooms on this floor.
’Maybe the special rooms are not in this building,’ he guessed.
Without hesitation, Azrael pulled his clothes off and entered the bathroom.
The sound of rushing water soon broke the silence of the room.
After a few minutes, it stopped.
Azrael stepped out a few seconds after that, thick mist curling behind him.
A towel was wrapped tightly around his waist.
From his forehead, a drop of water began to run down, passing over his refined body before dropping to the floor.
Azrael dried himself completely with the towel before he looked around again.
His ring shone with a subtle light.
In the next instant, a set of clean pyjamas popped out.
Azrael caught them and put them on quickly.
He was about to jump into bed when he heard a voice in his mind.
It was the system’s voice.
[I am back!]
It was different from the cold voice it used to have.
This one was slightly feminine.
"Where did you go?" Azrael asked with a smile before he settled into the bed fully.
[You are still as dumb as before,] the system said with a sigh.
Azrael’s brows arched.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
[When was the last time you interacted with me this way?]
the system asked again.
It dawned on Azrael what the system was saying.
His mind travelled far back, to over a month ago after he broke through to Tier 6.
[Yup, I had to update since you reached a new milestone,] the system said. [Since that time, the voice responding to you was an automated system that only speaks when needed.]
Azrael remained silent for a while after the reveal.
"So you also undergo updates like a normal application?" Azrael asked with a smile.
The system replied with a thumbs-up emoji.
Azrael furrowed his brows at the emoji, but he did not let that interfere with the moment.
"I don’t see any changes, though, and you are still as smart as before. Well, you also sound like a woman."
The system did not reply to Azrael’s taunt about its smartness.
[I still need to integrate with the system for you to see anything. I only need your permission to go on.]
"Oh." Azrael said, stroking his chin. "How long would it take? Also, would it affect me?" he asked in quick succession.
[It would take about 30 minutes, but don’t worry, it would be the most painless power-up you have ever gotten,] the system replied.
But Azrael scoffed.
He knew how petty and sly the system was.
"Just do it."
A grin spread across the system’s screen at Azrael’s words.
"Ah, fuck," Azrael said with a facepalm as he waited for the pain that was to come.
But nothing happened.
A warm energy began to circulate through his body, making his tense muscles relax.
The essence in his core began to drift out, flowing into the screen that floated in front of him.
The system’s panel began to vibrate slowly and subtly, but Azrael caught it.
’I wonder if it is the system that is feeling pain now,’ Azrael mused.
Although he was not a masochist, the thought of the system feeling pain made him quite happy.
[Don’t think too much about it, no one’s feeling pain, psychopath,] the system said in his head.
Azrael closed his eyes in what felt like disappointment.
’If only you were feeling pain,’ Azrael sighed mentally.
[Get such psychopathic thoughts out of your mind if you ever want a girlfriend in the future.]
Azrael just sighed at the system’s words, but he made no comment on them.
Even though the process brought no pain, Azrael could not move.
His body was rooted in that position, as if held back by an invisible force.
Time trickled by slowly.
[Integration Complete, System Updated Successfully.]
The words rang through Azrael’s ears, bringing him out of his long daze.
Unknowingly, the 30 minutes had passed by.
"Finally," Azrael groaned, stretching his arms.
The sound of bones straightening followed as they were set back in place.
[You are talking like you are not the one gaining from this,] the system said with a scoff.
"Yeah, yeah," Azrael said, not ready to argue with the system. "Just show me what you’ve got."
[You have to watch the intro video, hehe.] Accompanying those words was a devilish grinning emoji.
"Why am I getting creeps thinking about this?" Azrael mused.
[You will be getting more soon.]
Before Azrael could protest, the system’s screen expanded, filling his vision.
Then, the blue background shifted, displaying a sheet of paper.
Then a pencil began to sketch on the paper, drawing a being with golden hair, golden eyes, and golden horns.
’Is that meant to be me?’ Azrael asked.
[Yes, please keep quiet,] the system urged.
In the next instant, the paper tore into two halves, displaying an endless stretch of darkness. The camera zoomed in.
In the next moment, billions of points began to glow.
The camera stopped as it rested on one of the points.
It zoomed further, revealing a large planet.
It did not stop. It continued zooming.
Then, billions of people of different species and forms were gathered, all of them drawn in an anime-style art style.
