I Evolve 10,000 Times Faster

Chapter 54: High Summons

Sunlight found the gap between the curtains.

It slipped through in a thin golden line and stretched across the cultivation room floor, catching the last traces of steam that still hung in the air. The room was warm now. Comfortable. The biting cold that had filled it hours ago was completely gone.

Lyra’s skin had returned to its normal color.

The frost crystals had melted away. She lay on the mat with her eyes closed, breathing deeply and evenly, her frost-robes still loosely adjusted from the transfer.

Holden sat with his back against the wall, his eyes half-open. He’d maintained the energy flow for nearly five hours before the last of the frost had retreated. His arms ached dully and his energy reserves were lower than he liked, but it was nothing a good meal wouldn’t fix.

Lyra stirred.

Her fingers twitched. Then her brow furrowed slightly, like she was processing a dream. Her eyes opened slowly, focusing on the ceiling, then tracking the beam of sunlight across the wall.

She sat up.

The movement was fluid. She looked down at her hands, turning them over, flexing her fingers. A faint shimmer of frost energy danced across her skin and faded. Then a warmer pulse followed it, a gentle red-gold undertone that hadn’t been there before.

Her meridians weren’t just healed. They were different. Stronger. Her native frost flowed alongside a residual thread of Asura energy that had woven itself into her channels during the transfer. The two energies coexisted without conflict, creating something new.

She looked at Holden.

"Good morning," he said.

"You stayed all night."

"Someone had to make sure you didn’t turn back into a popsicle."

Lyra pulled her robes closed, adjusting the fabric with practiced precision. Her movements were calm, but there was a softness in her expression that hadn’t been there before. Something unguarded.

"Thank you," she said quietly. "Again."

"Don’t mention it."

"I mean it, Holden. You didn’t have to do this. You could have let the medics try their standard procedures and walked away. Instead you locked yourself in a room for five hours and gave me your own energy."

"Vespera said I was the only option."

"She said you were the best option. There’s a difference."

He shrugged.

Lyra tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. The gesture was slightly nervous, which was unusual for her. Lyra Ashford didn’t get nervous.

"I felt it, you know. Your power while you were transferring. I know what I sensed, and I know what you’ve told everyone you are. Those two things don’t match."

Holden met her eyes.

"Your secret is safe with me," she said. "All of them."

"I appreciate that."

"Good. Because I have a condition."

"Of course you do."

She stood up, smoothing down her robes.

"From now on, whenever my frost core acts up, you are my official human heating pad. Non-negotiable. I have documentation."

"You do not have documentation."

"I will create documentation."

"That’s terrifying."

"Deal with it."

He smiled. The kind that reached his eyes.

The moment hung between them.

Then a fist pounded on the door.

"Holden! Holden, open the door! It’s been hours! Is she okay? Is she alive? Please tell me she’s not an ice sculpture because I really can’t handle that!"

Renna.

Holden stood and unlocked the door.

It barely opened an inch before Renna forced her way through. She took one look at Lyra, standing upright and healthy and perfectly normal, and exploded.

"LYRA!"

She launched herself across the room and wrapped Lyra in a hug so aggressive it nearly knocked them both over.

"I thought you were going to turn into an ice sculpture! I thought I was going to lose you! I cried for like an hour! Emric timed it! He can confirm!"

Emric stepped through the doorway behind her, notebook in hand.

"One hour, twelve minutes, and approximately forty-three seconds," he confirmed. "I documented the emotional breakdown for posterity."

Renna pulled back from the hug, tears streaming down her face and a massive grin on her lips.

"Don’t you ever do that to me again! Ever! I swear I’ll pin your clothes to the floor if you even think about almost dying!"

"That’s a very specific threat," Lyra said, smiling softly.

"It’s a promise!"

Emric walked over and held out his hand. "May I?"

Lyra offered her wrist. Emric placed two fingers against her pulse point and closed his eyes. His brow furrowed in concentration.

"Fascinating," he murmured. "Your meridian flow rate is actually higher than your baseline pre-injury measurements. The structural integrity of your energy channels appears to have improved. And there’s a secondary energy signature woven through your primary pathways that I don’t recognize. It’s warm. Almost thermal in nature."

He opened his eyes and looked at Holden.

"Whatever transfer method you used, the results are extraordinary. Recovery from a runaway frost-core collapse in under eight hours with improved channel integrity is... unprecedented."

"Guess I’m just talented," Holden said.

"Humble too," Lyra added.

Maeve appeared in the doorway last. She leaned against the frame, looking between Holden and Lyra with an expression that was far too knowing for a thirteen-year-old.

"Everyone looks healthy," she said. "That’s good."

She glanced back and forth between Lyra and Holden. Then, a knowing, teasing smile spread across her face that said she had figured out exactly what had happened in this room overnight and she was going to be insufferable about it for weeks.

Holden pointed at her. "Don’t."

"I didn’t say anything."

"You’re thinking it loudly."

"I have no idea what you mean."

Renna was too busy fussing over Lyra to notice the exchange. Emric was writing in his notebook. The room felt warm and alive in a way it hadn’t the night before.

Bzzt.

A mechanical hum cut through the moment.

Everyone turned toward the window. An official academy security drone hovered outside the glass, its red and blue lights blinking in a slow, authoritative pattern. A small projection screen extended from its underside, displaying a message in sharp gold letters.

FORMAL SUMMONS

INSTRUCTOR VESPERA

HIGH COUNCIL HALL

IMMEDIATE ATTENDANCE REQUIRED

Holden read it twice.

"The trial," he said.

"Draven’s hearing," Lyra confirmed, her soft expression hardening into something sharper. "They’re deciding his punishment today."

"I need to go."

Maeve stepped aside from the doorway to let him pass.

"Be careful," she said.

"Always."
