At ten o’clock at night, Avery received an unexpected call.
Joy called her and said politely, "I love the novel Lockwood’s Detective Diary. I want to play the role of Lockwood, and I believe I can play this character well. I’d like to ask if you could sell me the film rights to the novel. Of course, you name the price, and I won’t negotiate."
Avery shook her head and said, "You’re a step too late. I’ve already confirmed the cast."
Joy was surprised. "Can you tell me who you’ve decided to cast as Lockwood?"
Avery did not hide it. "It’s Luna. I had a serious discussion with her. Her love and understanding of the character earned my approval, and I believe she can play Lockwood well."
After a few seconds of silence, Joy said objectively, "Luna is indeed an outstanding actress. I admire her professionalism and acting skills too. But don’t you think she’s a bit too old to play Lockwood?"
Avery did not let her emotions affect her decision. She told her in a serious tone, "I’ve thought about this issue seriously as well. Luna is twenty-nine this year, but she takes good care of herself. She’s been in great shape lately. There’s likely no issue with her playing a university student who’s ten years younger."
"With the current makeup and filming techniques, it’s not unreasonable for an actress to play a character ten years younger. But I’m the same age as the character and also a university student. I hope you will give me a chance to compete with Luna to see who is a better—"
"You’re not suited for this role." Avery shook her head. "You’ve lived overseas for a long time. The environment you grew up in is too different from Lockwood’s. You lack that pure and wild quality that she has from growing up locally."
"If you don’t let me try, how would you know I can’t portray those qualities?"
"No, I know you can act," Avery said. "I just prefer the style of Lockwood that Luna brings."
