Album 1, Track 35: Apathy and Anger
With the phone ringing in the background, just like it had been for the last many hours, Kana was woken up by Jina early in the evening. After their little ride back home, Yamazaki left for his apartment with Naomi. That was his headache now. And ever since then, Kana had taken her time to have a peaceful sleep.
“Kana! The door. They’re at the door!”
“Huh?”
She yawned and stretched her arms. Sure enough, beyond the constant ringing, she could hear taps and knocks on the door below. She had expected it to happen eventually, but they sure had taken their sweet time. But based on the sounds, their patience had run out in that time.
“What are they doing? Breaking the door down?”
“Uh…” Jina rushed out of the door, still in Kana’s view, and looked down the stairs at the front door, “I guess? I don’t know. I don’t know! They might actually be breaking the door down. What the fuck are we gonna do!?”
“What do you mean?” Kana got out of bed and stretched her legs.
It had been a long time since she had slept at such an unusual time. There was a sense of superiority to waking up so late for some reason. Even the deafening sounds of the banging on the door downstairs and the ringing of the phones inside the apartment were not enough to ruin her mood, as the slight and pleasant sunlight touched her through the window.
“Do you hear the wood creaking?”
“The wood…creaking?” She emphasized the last word, grumbling about it but still closing her eyes to focus on the noises.
As she did that, Kana went to the bathroom and splashed some water on her face. She wondered if she had enough time to take a bath. But right as the thought was crossing her head, she realized that it didn’t matter at all. Regardless of time, Sakai and whoever else was with him would not break into the bathroom to catch her. She had all the time she needed.
“N-no creaking! It’s holding well for no-” Jina stepped back in the room, “Put some damn clothes on! Where are your clothes!?”
Kana took a towel from the closet and turned on the shower, “Just don’t look. I’m not the one to blame here, am I? And you too. Do something about that. It looks ugly as all hell.”
Jina touched her hair as Kana locked the door behind her and got under the cold water. Her body shivered at the contrast in temperature, but calmed down soon after. The frizzy hair softened and stuck to her face. Closing her eyes, she tried to tune out the sounds outside, but Jina’s voice still managed to make it through.
“Kana, they’re getting louder. They’re breaking the damn door down. Stop acting so casual. You think they’re gonna let you get away with blasting some dude to oblivion!?”
Wasn’t she the one asking Kana about the explosion last night? Wasn’t she the one who had questioned if they were going to let that man walk away with his crimes? In the end, she was still just as self-serving as ever, it seemed. Or maybe the situation was just getting to her. Knowing Jina, Kana guessed it was the latter.
She wasn’t going to get anything by losing herself, though, so Kana focused on the bath for now. Last night had been enough of an eye-opener. Take time with your decisions and let yourself breathe. That was the only way she was going to win. That was how she was going to get out of this.
“Call Yamazaki-san. If he doesn’t pick up, then call him over and over.” Kana raised her voice, “Tell him we need everything he has collected till now. Every single file he has created about Lilac Shower and the Coalition.”
“Al…right?” She stuttered and then banged on the bathroom door, “No, wait! Hold on. What do you mean? What if he is outside with the others right now? You think Sakai is going to come all alone!?”
Kana clicked her tongue. Why did she need to complicate questions to get answers that didn’t matter? Seeing that the bathtub had been filled, she turned the shower off and got in. Water splashed, and she kicked her legs up, resting them on the edge of the tub.
“Not our problem. Call him and ask him to send it.”
After that, the sounds finally died down. To a certain extent, at least. Kana looked up at the ceiling and let the water overflow her senses. The door downstairs, the phone in her room, Jina’s screams…it all blended into one undecipherable background noise. She could see the path she needed to take, and that was what she was going to focus on.
If she had to guess, Ryu Sakai would be waiting for her when the door finally broke down. With him would be Aiko Taira, without a doubt. Then, a higher Coalition representative. There was no way they were going to get the police involved, so that could be ruled out. Whatever happened then could be fixed with what she already knew and some sweet-talking.
There was just one variable that she did not want to deal with. But the chances of that happening were so low that she didn’t entertain the idea.
A few dozen minutes later, as the banging started to vibrate through the walls, Kana finally sighed and got out. Wiping herself dry, she left the bathroom to find herself alone in the room. Jina, it seemed, was probably panicking downstairs. Ignoring any questions her brain had about her, Kana went to the closet and picked some comfortable clothes.
Then, right as she started to put them on, the door came down.
A large thud, followed by a blood-curdling scream from her partner. Way too many pairs of footsteps echoed through the room. Kana put on her t-shirt and adjusted her hair. Then, as a man wearing a black suit walked up to the doorframe, she pushed past him and walked down.
Jina had decided to sit on the floor. In front of her stood, as expected, Ryu Sakai and Aiko Taira. Right behind them, between two guards, was Yamazaki. As she walked down the stairs, he gave her a slight nod. Kana checked her phone, and the email had indeed arrived. This was perfect, then. Only the three of them were no issue.
“Get that done right away. Please.”
The fourth, unfamiliar voice, boomed from outside the apartment. Right as she reached the floor and sighed, he appeared from the door. Still wearing an extravagantly loud yellow suit, Kenji Tanaka had a disgusting smile on his face.
“And what does the President of Lilac Shower want from me?” Kana asked, pulling Jina up by her collar and making her stand up.
“Kana Minami.” Tanaka addressed her for what she was sure was the first time ever, “I’ve been chosen as a representative of the Coalition. We’re here to discuss what you did last night, and also, of course, the prolonged silence following that.”
“Hmm.”
“We…We were j-”
Kana put her hand on Jina’s head before she could speak further and gave her a pat.
“Jina, aren’t you hungry?”
“Huh?” She looked up.
“We should order something, don’t you think? I’m pretty sure you’re not in the mood to cook something right now.”
“H-uh?”
Dragging her to the couch, she made Jina sit down and took her place beside her. Crossing her legs, Kana locked eyes with Kenji Tanaka as she took her phone out and asked her partner what she wanted to eat for lunch. But since there was no reply, she decided on her own and started a call.
“Kana, cut the call right now. Are you going to take responsibility for what you did or not!?” Sakai screamed, straightening his jacket and walking up to her.
Before he could raise his hand, though, Tanaka and Taira stopped him together. In the back, Yamazaki didn’t care enough to move. Just like her, he knew that nobody was actually going to hurt her.
“Hello?” Kana pushed her hair back, “Is this Gokupan, that new bakery? Yes! I just wanted to know what kind of things you might deliver?”
“Kana…cut the call.” Sakai snarled at her, barely being held back by a smiling Tanaka.
“Kana-chan…” Jina gulped, trying to bring her hand up to the phone, “Just-”
“Yes! Perfect. It’s fine if it takes some time. I am in the middle of something, so it wouldn’t do if it came too early anyway. Give me six of those. What else would you recommend? Something sweet, maybe?”
“You…!”
Before the man on the phone could give her more recommendations, the bald old man wrestled his way out of Tanaka’s lock and snatched her phone. Leaving a small scratch on her face due to his overgrown nails, Sakai crushed the device between his fist. Before Tanaka could voice any concerns, he had already turned and thrown it into the pool.
As the dead phone sank to the bottom, Kana’s heartbeat increased. The confidence in her wavered for just a moment. Sakai was not kidding around today. RiRi’s death had clearly gotten to him, too. Maybe by not addressing that first, she is just being unnecessarily difficult.
“I’m sorry about her.” She looked away from the man as she spoke, deciding to focus on the inflatable swan, “I didn’t…mean for that to happen. I’ll handle the fallout, whatever it is. Let’s talk about that afterwards, please.”
“That’s not the only thing we’re here for!” Sakai screamed, leaning in closer, “Do you even know what you’ve done!? Do you have any idea what we-”
Jina moved away from the action, pushing herself against the edge of the couch as he made himself larger.
“Sakai-san, please.” Aiko Taira put a hand on his shoulder and pulled the man back, “Let us discuss this peacefully. I am sure we all have a lot to add, given her constant disregard of the rules.”
“What rules?” Kana hissed, covering more space as she stood up, “What rules did I break?”
“Well, the rules of the government, for one. They’re called the laws, if you’re unfamiliar.” Tanaka started walking, weaving between Taira and Sakai as he pulled out a cigarette from his pocket, “You killed someone yesterday. Do you understand that, or have any regard for that?”
“I am pretty sure the laws for killing animals are far less punishing than the ones for killing human beings.”
Tanaka shrugged, “I am not sure if the court is going to listen to that, so speak for yourself. He had two arms, two legs, and a brain in that skull. The man was human as far as the judge will be concerned. Your opinions don’t hold any water.”
“And you’re never going to take me to court, because you can’t afford to make things public. Stop with the baseless threats and just get to the point. What do you want from me?”
“Nothing. Absolutely nothing.” He put the cigarette in his mouth, but then changed his mind for some reason. Putting it back into his pocket, he continued, “In fact, we want you to do very little. Just…walk out of this apartment, and get out of the Coalition.”
“And then? Tell everyone about your little operation? Who do you think the public will be more inclined to believe? The massive corporation that is Lilac Shower, or,” Kana blinked and put up some puppy eyes, “the poor little girl whose life you ruined because of your greed?”
“Greed?!” Sakai laughed, trying to get to her once more, but stopped by Yamazaki this time, “You’re the only fucking person in this room who is greedy. You’re the goddamn definition of that word, you bitch!”
“Yeah, and you’re a businessman who does not know a thing about art, running an idol agency. I think we both know our words don’t mean shit.” She sat back down with a thud, looking at the head of Lilac Shower. He had now taken an interest in the inflatable swan as well. Kana snapped her fingers, and he looked back, “You. I refuse. I am not going to leave, so give me some other option.”
Moving away from the pool, Tanaka laughed as he sat down on one of the dining table chairs, “Wow. You remind me of that new girl. What’s her name? Nobuko…something? Whatever. I guess all of you younger ones are cut from the same cloth. What makes you think we’re here to listen to what you have to say?”
She reminded him of Nobuko? Anyone who actually knew the girl would say the exact opposite. Kana wasn’t sure if he was just trying to be relatable, or if that bitch had actually put up a different front for him. Either way, she wasn’t going to forget that remark anytime soon. It even got Jina to sit upright. The moment she heard the name, it was like she had been reminded of what Lilac Shower had done to her ex-friend.
“So, you’re going to kick me out of the Coalition because I used my weapons outside of the monster world, is that it?”
“I think the killing a person part might be a bit more relevant here, don’t you?”
“Not really.” She sighed, “I wouldn’t say it’s right, but I don’t think you find it relevant either, so I’ve elected to ignore it as well. What you’re actually pissed about is me causing an explosion in a public street that you need to cover up.”
“For the second time.” Taira added, sighing, “Minami-san, you really need to start learning from your mistakes.”
“Oh, I do.” She snapped. Now that she knew who Aiko Taira really was, there was no love left in her heart for the woman, “And I’ll keep doing it whenever I do make a mistake. There’s been a dearth of those from my side recently, so not much to learn.”
“Minami…” Tanaka laughed, “Wow, you really picked the correct agency. No wonder Sakai’s letting your bullshit thrive. Nobody else would.”
“What did you just say!?”
That was enough of a trigger to cause the bald old man to change his center of attention. It almost made Kana rethink what the Lilac Shower president’s priorities even were. Why had he actually come here? But as she thought that, her answer revealed itself to her. The files she had received on her phone finally clicked, and she got an answer.“Never mind that.” She kept her eyes on Tanaka even as her boss tried to stare down an answer out of him.
“What do you mean? Keep quiet, Kana!”
“Let’s just get the filler out of the way.” Kana decided to play her hand. It was incomplete, and she wasn’t sure if it would even work, but it was the best she had, “If you remove me, I tell everyone everything.”
“We can cover it up, Minami. You’re not getting anywhere.”
“Oh, but I don’t mean the public. I mean the other agencies. I’ll tell them everything.”
“What is everything, Minami?” His smile wavered for a second, and Sakai turned to her, too.“What do you mean, Kana?”
“Minami-san…” Taira stuttered.
Kana smiled, “Everything, Tanaka. Don’t you know, Sakai-san? Haven’t you ever questioned where the monster dimension came from? Ever wondered who came up with the idea of the Coalition, and who truly owns it?”
“We all own it. We have equal shares, all seven of us!” Sakai growled, “What are you trying to imply?”
“Nothing. She’s making things up to gain higher ground.” Tanaka clicked his tongue, looking away from her.
As expected, he was not going to break that easily. At least she now had proof. She had been right, and she also had proof. Now, she just needed to convince Tanaka that she had all the proof.
She opened her mouth to speak up, but the ding of the elevator outside the broken door caught everyone’s attention. Footsteps made their way to the opening, and all of them looked in the direction to see who it was.
“Kelsey, do-”
“Shut the fuck up, Sanada! Shut the fuck up!”
Through the door, carrying a crowbar in her hand, appeared the blonde member of Pink Beats. Heaving and her eyes red, she looked at Kana. The guards, and Yamazaki, stood up in response.
This was what Kana had been worried about. That unpredictable, uncontrollable, ruinous variable. Why did she have to actually show up?
“Get over here, Minami. It’s judgment day.”
