Chapter 611: Steel and Fire
~Azure S. POV~
[Unova Region, Afternoon, Route 2]
The evening air along Route 2 carried the crisp, earthy scent of damp soil, blooming tall grass, and the faint tang of electric-type sparks. Dusk was settling over the Unova countryside, painting the horizon in bruised shades of purple and burnt orange.
Striaton City loomed just over the rolling hills ahead—our immediate destination, and the site of my next official test in this region. Beside me, perched comfortably with the familiar weight, Pikachu let out a soft yawn, his tiny whiskers brushing against my cheek. On top of my head, Eevee had already curled into a warm, furry donut, fast asleep against my skull. Hidden safely inside the breast pocket of my jacket, a heavily disguised Pichu (Mew) let out a faint, psychic purr that vibrated warmly against my ribs.
Zoura's mental voice echoed softly in my mind, smooth and playful, using his telepathy as he trotted along beside my left boot, his fluffy black-and-red tail swishing lazily, 'Are we almost there yet?'
I murmured back, keeping my voice low, "Not quite yet, buddy. We're setting up camp for the night right here. No need to burn ourselves out rushing."
A few yards away, Black was practically vibrating with nervous, high-on energy. The 15-year-old was pacing back and forth beside a hastily thrown-together campfire, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists.
His mind, as usual, was entirely consumed by the grand, glittering monolith of his lifelong ambition: The Unova League Championship. Black barked, his voice loud enough to rustle the leaves of the nearby pattering bushes, "We shouldn't be stopping, Azure! The Striaton Gym is right there! Three Gym Leaders! Type advantages! We need to strategize, to calculate, to win! If we waste time here, someone else might—"
I interrupted, tossing a lightweight canvas tent peg into the dirt and hammering it down with the heel of my boot. I said coolly, "Relax, Black. If your brain overheats any more than it already does, you're going to pass out and start chewing on your own shoelaces again. Take a breath. It's been a long walk from Nuvema Town."
Black started, but a sudden, high-pitched groaning sound from his own skull cut him off. He shouted back, "I don't need a breath! I need—"
He grabbed his temples, his eyes crossing slightly before he wobbled and caught himself against his trusty Munna, Musha, who floated beside him with a look of long-suffering, parental exhaustion. White, sitting gracefully on a campstool nearby while meticulously polishing a silver brush for her BW Agency actors, let out a delicate sigh as she said in a tired tone, "Honestly, Black. Listen to Azure. You're going to run yourself right into a wall before we even set foot inside the Gym. Besides, we have your new team members to consider."
At her words, I glanced down toward the edge of the campfire's amber glow. Curled up near the warmth were two newly integrated additions to our makeshift family: Black's newly acquired Galvantula, Tula, and my own newly caught Minccino.
Both had been utterly depressed just hours ago. Their previous trainers had abandoned them on the spot, weeping tears of misplaced ideological fervor after hearing one of Ghetsis's loud, self-righteous public speeches about "liberation."
They'd been left alone in the tall grass, shivering, confused, and feeling utterly betrayed by the humans they trusted. They had been inconsolable. That is, until I pulled out my Arc-phone and played a very specific, deeply humiliating digital recording for them: "Bzzzt! Mustard! It burns! Oh, sweet Arceus, it burns the nostrils!"
They echoed the holographic projection of Team Plasma's grand orator, his face tomato-red as he aggressively shoveled a massive clump of raw wasabi into his mouth while simultaneously receiving an astronomical, atomic wedgie from an invisible, shadowy force courtesy of my partner, Genger.
The sheer, unadulterated absurdity of the scene had broken the trauma instantly. Tula had clicked his mandibles in hysterical amusement, and Minccino had giggled so hard she'd sneezed out a puff of smoke.
Now, surrounded by our established teams—Zwelious rumbling softly in his sleep, Drilbur snoring rhythmically in the dirt, and my massive, fierce Alpha Braviary keeping a sharp, golden-eyed vigil from a high tree branch—the two newcomers were settling in.
Black's Tepig, Tep, trotted over and nuzzled Tula's furry flank, offering a warm, roasted berry to share with the others. Minccino accepted a pat from my hand, her tail fluffing up with renewed confidence.
I smiled, scratching behind Minccino's fluffy ears. I said calmly, "See? No one's abandoning anyone here. We take care of our own."
Black, having recovered from his mental overload, rubbed his head sheepishly. He said in a bitter tone, "Yeah... I guess you're right. It's just... Ghetsis and those Plasma guys filling people's heads with garbage. It makes things complicated."
I said casually with a sly grin, leaning my back against a mossy boulder, "It only complicates things if you let it."
Deep within my shadow, Gengar's glowing crimson eyes blinked open, and a low, raspy chuckle echoed aloud, "Fools, the lot of them."
White jumped, frightened. She yelped, "Eeep! Who said that!"
Gengar soon revealed herself in an overdramatic tone, "It was none other than me! The sexy and beautiful Gengar toots!"
White froze as she said in disbelief, "Azure… your Gengar can talk!!"
I rolled my eyes, nodding my head whilst Black shrugs alreading knowing this. Gengar's vocal whisper hissed playfully from the darkness beneath my feet, "Shall I slip into their tents tonight and salt their sleeping bags, Master?"
I thought back with a mental smirk, 'Not yet, girl. Save the salt for later.'

[Unova Region, Next Day, Route 2]
The next morning, the mist hung low over the paved paths of Route 2. The air was cool, carrying the sweet scent of morning dew mixed with the faint, metallic tang of iron. As Black, White, and I resumed our walk toward Striaton City, the terrain began to flatten out, giving way to well-tended grass patches and occasional stone markers. But before we could clear the final ridge, we heard the distinct sound of clashing steel.
*Clang*
*Schhh-wing*
We halted, exchanging glances. Stepping around a thick cluster of berry bushes, we found ourselves looking at a small clearing. Several trainers—clearly bruised, scuffed, and nursing minor burns—were stumbling backward, rapidly recalling their exhausted Pokémon into their red-and-white spheres.
Standing in the center of the clearing was a single Pokémon.
It was a Pawniard.
But unlike any ordinary wild specimen, this one carried an aura of absolute, razor-sharp focus. Its metallic body gleamed like polished chrome in the morning light. Right now, it was methodically sharpening its wicked, blade-like arms against a discarded wooden training dummy, paying zero attention to the fleeing trainers.
Black called out, stepping forward with his usual reckless enthusiasm, "Hey! What's going on here? Are you guys battling that Pawniard?"
One of the defeated trainers, a young boy with a cap pulled low, wiped sweat from his forehead and explained, "Yeah... we tried. We heard there was a powerful Pawniard in the area that needed capturing. But... but..."
White asked curiously, stepping up, looking equal parts concerned and managerial at the trainer, "But what?"
A second trainer, clutching a shoulder where a blade had clearly grazed his shirt, answered, "Some guy in a long, flowing white coat—some Team Plasma speaker—gave a speech about how Pokémon shouldn't be confined to Poké Balls, how they should be 'liberated' to find their own paths. So this guy's trainer... he just opened the ball, told the Pawniard he was free, and walked away!"
I crossed my arms, my gaze fixed on the metallic biped, adding, "Let me guess. The trainer expected the Pawniard to weep with joy and run off into the sunset to join the local squirrel population?"
The first trainer groaned, explaining the Steel-Types situation, "Exactly! Instead, the Pawniard looked at him, sliced his backpack in half, and challenged us to a fight. And... well, you saw the result. We couldn't even scratch him!"
With low groans of defeat, the trainers turned tail and hurried down the path toward Striaton, leaving only Black, White, and me standing at the edge of the clearing. I couldn't help the small smirk that tugged at the corner of my mouth.
Team Plasma's half-baked propaganda of 'liberation' strikes again. They go around preaching about freedom, accidentally releasing Pokémon that enjoy fighting, and leaving absolute chaos in their wake.
But looking at this Pawniard, there was no heartbreak in those cold eyes. No sadness. Just an intense, burning drive for self-improvement. He had discarded a weak master and was now sharpening his edge against anyone foolish enough to step into his domain.
Interesting… this seems to be a reverse case.
A Pokémon abandoning their Trainer perhaps?
Black gasped, his eyes turning into literal spinning stars of excitement. He exclaimed, "Incredible! Look at that stance! Look at the speed of those movements! A Pawniard like that... with training... he could win me the Unova League!"
Without missing a beat, Black bolted forward into the clearing, pointing a finger directly at the Steel-type challenger. He shouted, "Hey! You! You're looking for strong opponents, right? Well, I'm going to be the Unova Champion! Let's battle right now!"
Pawniard stopped sharpening his blade. He turned his head with mechanical precision, fixing Black with a withering, unimpressed glare. Slowly, deliberately, the Steel-type raised one gleaming arm-blade and hooked his "wrist" upward, giving a universal, mocking gesture: 'Hurry up and bring it.'
Black shouted with an eager grin, his competitive fire roaring to life, "Oh, you've got sass! Tep! Let's go!"
*Fwoosh*
Black's Tepig materialized in a flash of red light, letting out an eager oink as he trotted forward, smoke pluming from his snout. Black took out his Pokedex as it spoke mechanically, informing him, "Pawniard, the Sharp Blade Pokémon. A Steel and Dark type! Generations of Pawniard sharpen their blades on boulders and opponents alike. Warning: Extreme lethality near soft flesh!"
Black yelled, pumping his fist, "Alright, Tep! Let's start fast! Use Ember!"
*Fwooosh*
Tep inhaled deeply, his cheeks puffing out before he unleashed a swirling spray of orange fireballs straight toward the Steel-type. Pawniard didn't even flinch. Instead, he dropped into a low crouch and began to spin.
*Clang-clang-clang-clang*
A shimmering, ghostly aura erupted around him—Swords Dance. As he spun through the flames, the sheer rotational velocity and the barrier of energy batted the individual fireballs away like annoying gnats, harmlessly scattering the embers into the dirt.
Furthermore, the dance visibly bulked up his physical aura, his blade-arms glowing with a lethal, sharpened sheen. The technique is not bad.
Black blinked, taken aback, before commanding, "He deflected it with a dance?! Tep, don't let up! Close the distance!"
Before Tep could take two steps, Pawniard vanished.
*Swish*
The steel-type reappeared directly in front of the small pig Pokémon. With a lightning-fast upward swing of his arm—Slash—he caught Tep square in the chest.
*BAM*
Tep let out a squeal as the sheer force of the blow launched him twenty feet straight up into the air, a high arc of dirt and sweat trailing behind him.
Black yelled, "Tep!"
To his credit, Tep possessed his trainer's stubborn tenacity. As he fell back toward the earth, he twisted his body mid-air, landing squarely on all four hooves, though his knees buckled slightly. Black roared, "Now, counterattack! Flame Charge!"
*Hisss—Zooom*
Tep burst into a cloak of bright, crackling orange flames, charging forward with blistering speed, aiming to slam his fiery body directly into the steel warrior. Pawniard's eyes narrowed. He crossed his blade-arms in front of his face. A translucent, hexagonal barrier flickered into existence—Protect.
*CRASH*
Tep's fiery tackle smashed against the barrier, sending shockwaves through the grass. But the shield held, absorbing the kinetic energy entirely. Before Tep could rebound, Pawniard dropped the barrier, spun on his heel, and unleashed a flurry of rapid-fire strikes.
*Slash-Slash-Slash*
Metal met flesh with brutal efficiency. Tep stumbled backward, panting heavily, scorch marks and minor cuts marring his hide. Black shouted, panic bleeding into his voice for the first time, "Tep, get out of there!"
It was too late.
*Swooosh*
Pawniard leaped high into the air, executing a majestic, terrifying front flip. Gravity pulled him down like a falling guillotine, his blade arm gleaming with lethal intent.
*Slash*
Striking downward with maximum force, the final blow connected with a sickening thud!
*Thud—BOOM*
A small crater of dust erupted around Tep. When the smoke cleared, the little pig Pokémon lay flat on his side, swirling eyes indicating he was completely knocked out.
Black rushed forward, scooping up his fallen partner with a groan of frustration, muttering, "Aw, man... I lost."
He recalled Tep into his Poké Ball with a click, looking at Pawniard with a mixture of utter dismay and intense, burning respect. Pawniard landed gracefully on his feet, lowered his blade, and once again hooked his arm upward at the remaining spectators.
He looked at me, motioning with his blade.
From his gestures, his saying... 'Who's next?'
I chuckled, stepping past Black and into the clearing. I said calmly to the steel-type, "Well fought, kid. But you brought a blunt instrument to a sword fight. Let me show you how a veteran handles a precision instrument."
Black groaned from the sidelines, leaning against a tree. He muttered, "Go get him. But honestly... I really wanted to catch that guy."
I smiled, reaching to my belt, answering, "Tough luck, Black. He's mine."
Swords Dance and Protect, huh...
This guy's been trained.
Using Swords Dance to create a defensive option against fire while boosting his own attacks. Not only that, but I have a good feeling his ability is Inner Focus, with how much time he focuses on himself; I'm willing to bet he hasn't shown all his cards.
I raised an eyebrow briefly at the nametag above his head…
[Pawniard (M) Lv.34 – Sharp Blade Pokémon]
… And high level too. No wonder Black couldn't win with Tep.
Fortunately for me, I have just the answer for him. I grinned, approaching this showdown, seeing what this guy could do.
I unclipped a Poké Ball from my belt and tossed it into the air. I declared, "Come on out, girl. Let's show this sharp dresser what real heat looks like."
*Flash*
Appearing in a burst of bright, sparkling white light was my Alpha Larvesta. Standing nearly twice the size of a normal member of her species, her fuzzy, golden-orange body radiated an intense, ambient heat that immediately caused the dew on the surrounding grass to evaporate into thin wisps of steam.
Her six small legs gripped the earth firmly, and her large, faceted eyes locked onto Pawniard with absolute, unyielding predatory confidence. Across the clearing, Pawniard stiffened. For the first time since the battle began, a flicker of genuine caution crossed the Steel-type's angular face. He didn't see an easy target here.
He saw an Apex predator. He dropped instantly into a low, defensive combat stance, his blades humming with suppressed energy.
I called out, keeping my hands in my pockets, trusting my partner implicitly, "Alright, Larvesta. Let's test his reflexes! Flame Charge!"
*Hissss—Swooosh*
With a burst of explosive speed, Larvesta leaped into the air, her entire body igniting in a brilliant, roaring halo of white-hot fire as she hurtled straight toward the Steel-type like a living meteor.
*Swooosh*
Pawniard reacted with lightning agility, side-stepping at the very last microsecond. Larvesta's fiery charge scorched the earth where he had stood a moment before. Mid-dodge, Pawniard slashed his arm horizontally…
*Shinng*
A crescent-shaped blade of shimmering, psychic pink energy materialized out of thin air, whistling through the grass toward Larvesta's flank. Interesting, this guy even knows Psycho Cut, a move he can't learn normally unless by Egg Move or training.
I commanded, "Shatter it! Bug Buzz!"
Larvesta didn't bother dodging. She tilted her head back and unleashed a piercing, ultrasonic frequency that rippled through the air in visible waves of sound.
*SCREEEEECH*
The bug energy wave collided with the sound barrier. The resulting shockwave blew the surrounding grass flat in a wide circle. The Psycho Cut shattered into harmless purple sparkles under the sheer concussive force of the bug-type cry.
*CRACK*
Pawniard's eyes widened slightly in surprise. He pushed off the ground, closing the distance in a blur of motion. His arm swept upward in a lethal diagonal arc…
*Slash*
I called, "Up and over!"
*Boing*
Larvesta sprang vertically into the air, avoiding the steel blade by a millimeter. I ordered, "Now, point-blank! Flamethrower!"
*Fiiii—hissss*
Opening her jaws wide, Larvesta vomited a torrent of blazing orange fire straight down at the descending Pawniard. Realizing he couldn't dodge in mid-air, Pawniard crossed his blades, channeling a wave of dark, malevolent energy along the steel edges of his arm, unleashing—Night Slash.
*SLASH*
He swung upward with all his might, attempting to literally cut the stream of fire in half. The dark energy blade sliced into the heart of the torrent. For a fraction of a second, the dark aura and the blistering flames wrestled for dominance, illuminating the clearing in a strobe-light effect of crimson and black…
*Fwooosh*
Then, physics took over. The sheer, overwhelming volume of Larvesta's STAB-boosted Flamethrower overwhelmed the Night Slash.
*BOOM*
The column of fire slammed directly into Pawniard, engulfing him and driving him face-first into the dirt with an explosive concussive force. Smoke billowed from the scorched crater. Pawniard lay motionless at the bottom, his metallic body smoking, small sparks jumping from his joints. I ordered again, "Finish it up, girl. Another Flamethrower, light tap."
*Fwooosh*
Larvesta dutifully exhaled a small, controlled jet of flame that tapped the fallen Steel-type gently, ensuring he was down for the count. Pawniard's eyes spun into spirals. Seems like he'll stay down now.
*Click*
Without hesitation, I flicked a standard Poké Ball from my belt. It sailed through the air, hit Pawniard's chest, absorbed him in a red beam of light, and dropped to the grass. Now it was the waiting game…
*Wobble*
*Wobble*
*Wobble*
*Click*
Caught. I smiled, seeing that I'd caught myself a new Pokémon.
