Chapter 609: N’s First Battle
~Third POV~
[Unova Region, Accumula Town – Residential District]
Black shouted, stepping forward with a hot-blooded scowl, waving his arms wildly as he tried to insert himself into the conversation, "Hey! Wait a minute! I wanted to battle him first!"
Azure and N exchanged a glance, completely ignoring Black's outburst in perfect synchrony. Azure said childishly, sticking his tongue out slightly at N, "Dibs Black! Gotta respect the rules~."
Black groaned, clutching his head in utter exasperation. Black thought, his face flushing red with frustration, "Unbelievable! He's totally ignoring me again!"
Across the clearing, N closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, tuning out the physical world to listen. Deep within his mind, the ethereal, overlapping cadences of Azure's Pikachu and Eevee washed over him.
N's eyes snapped open in sheer, unadulterated astonishment. The sheer depth of absolute trust, unwavering faith, and deep, affectionate warmth echoing from the casually relaxing Pokémon was staggering.
There was no fear, no resentment—only a profound, joyful loyalty.
Clenched fists. N tightened his grip, swallowing hard. He had to trust his own friends. He had to hear the inner voices of Azure's battling team to find out if this man was truly a master of manipulation or something else entirely.
N whispered, "Come forth, my friends."
*Swooosh*
With flashes of white light that materialized into reality, N's chosen team stepped onto the turf: a sleek Purrloin, a muscular Gurderr, a darting Tympole, a soaring Pidove, a sharp-eyed Snivy, and a Zorua hidden completely beneath an intricate illusion. N commanded his visible trio forward, sending out Purrloin, Gurderr, and Snivy.
Azure smirked, unlatching three specific spheres from his belt. He tossed them outward and declared, "Alright, showtime. Go get 'em: Zorua, Axew, and Zweilous!"
*Flash-Flash-Flash*
The air crackled with energy as Azure's trio materialized. A male Zorua with a mischievous grin hit the ground, flanked by a massive, two-headed Zweilous and a shimmering, vibrant Shiny Axew.
Gurderr roared, its muscular frame surging into motion as it rushed straight toward the illusion-shrouded Zorua with a heavy wooden beam hoisted over its shoulder, "Grrrah! (Take out the runt!)."
*CRASH*
Before Gurderr could take another step, Zweilous lunged forward with terrifying speed, its twin bodies wrapping around the momentum of a devastating Dragon Rush. The multi-headed dragon intercepted Gurderr mid-stride, slamming its weight into the fighting-type before both of its snapping jaws engaged in a vicious Fire Fang, sinking burning, jagged teeth deep into Gurderr's arms.
*CRUNCH*
Gurderr thrashed, trying to shake the dragon off, "ROAR! (Get off!!)"
*CRUNCH*
However, Zweilous didn't relent. Instead, he dug deeper into his muscles, "ZWEIII!!! (Nu-uh! I'll bite even harder!)."
*Zooom*
At the same time, Purrloin dashed across the terrain, claws gleaming as it prepared a swift Night Slash aimed directly at Zorua. But…
*Clang*
Zorua spun on his heel, intercepting the dark-type strike with a lightning-fast Cut. Zorua's voice echoed sharply through telepathy, carrying a distinctly snarky ring that bounced directly inside N's head: 'Too slow, kitty-cat! You're no match for the mighty Zorua! En garde!'
The sudden intrusion of the clever fox's vocal thoughts caught N completely off guard. The deflection left an opening, and Snivy capitalized on it instantly, darting forward with a glowing, razor-sharp Leaf Blade aimed right at Zorua.
*Whoosh*
Before Snivy's blade could connect, Azure's latest newcomer—the shiny Axew—intercepted the grass-type with a ferocious Dragon Claw. The metallic screech of scales grinding against hardened energy echoed across the residential street.
Snivy sneered, leaping back, her eyes narrowing at the uniquely colored dragon. Axew let out a fierce, determined snort, awaiting Azure's next command as the skirmish intensified. Nearby, Black watched with wide, unblinking eyes, completely captivated by the sheer fluidity of the clash.
*CRUNCH*
*SMASH*
*SHINNG*
While the physical blows were traded, N closed his eyes once more, actively seeking out the inner voices of Azure's Pokémon, desperately searching for a sign of distress, a cry for liberation, or any proof that Azure was a tyrant in disguise.
He focused first on Zweilous.
The two-headed dragon was currently unleashing a twin-headed Dragon Rage, a concussive shockwave of purple energy that violently pushed Gurderr backward. N tuned his mind to the overlapping consciousnesses of the dragon's two heads.
The left head's voice resonated strongly within N, carrying a deep sense of gratitude, 'Must fight hard... must repay Master Azure for saving us from the wretched Pokémon Hunters in the snowy wastes of Sinnoh when we were still just a fragile egg...'
N's breath hitched in confusion, 'Hunters? Sinnoh?'
*BOOOM*
Then N listened to the voice of the right head, which surged forward with a Strong Style Dragon Pulse. The emerald-blue beam of draconic power blasted Gurderr straight off its feet, sending the fighting-type hurtling through the air until it crashed heavily into a nearby stone wall, sliding down unconscious.
The right head's voice echoed with intense ambition: 'I want to get stronger! I need to catch up to big sis Dragonite and the rest of the heavy hitters under Azure's command! We're gonna evolve into our final forms so we can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the legends! ...Though, man, I'm starving. Wonder if Master has those berry-stuffed Poffins ready for after the match.'
N blinked, utterly baffled. There was no fear. No desire for freedom from captivity. Only fierce loyalty, profound gratitude, and an appetite for snacks.
*CLANG*
Shifting his focus, N listened to the sounds of rapid, high-speed slashing nearby. Purrloin and Azure's Zorua were locked in a dizzying close-quarters dance. Purrloin spun, unleashing a flurry of Night Slashes, but Zorua danced around them, dodging with impossible agility before retaliating with a glowing Night Daze.
*Poof*
Deciding to be thoroughly insufferable, Zorua utilized his innate mastery of illusions. In a shimmering wave of purple light, Zorua completely transformed his appearance into an exact, flawless replica of N himself.
Purrloin lunged forward with another claw strike, only to freeze mid-air with wide, terrified eyes. She caught sight of the face of the human she respected and followed, instantly halting her attack out of sheer, instinctive panic, terrified of harming N…
*PEW*
It was all the opening Zorua needed. Closing the distance in a blur, Zorua unleashed a point-blank, Strong Style Night Daze that enveloped Purrloin, sending her tumbling backward into the grass, fainted.
*THUD*
As Purrloin fell, the N-illusion chuckled deeply, dissolving into a thick puff of purple smoke that drifted away in the breeze. N winced, his mind brushing against Zorua's mental signature.
The fox's voice was loud, arrogant, and brimming with childish pride. Zorua's telepathic voice crowed with infectious amusement, 'Ha! Take that! Bow down before the mighty Zorua and his magnificent, breathtaking illusions! I'm still not quite as good at this as Mama, of course... nor up to the spooky standards of Azure's Mismagius, Ninetales, or that weirdo Gengar. But I'm gonna climb straight to the top! I'm gonna be the strongest trickster in the world, right alongside Azure!'
Zorua let out a mischievous, high-pitched giggle that echoed in the air. With Purrloin and Gurderr down, Zweilous trotted heavily over behind Zorua. Zorua cheerfully climbed onto Zweilous's back like a living footstool while they turned their collective attention to the ongoing duel between Axew and Snivy.
N and Azure barked out their respective commands across the battlefield, but N kept his mental radar locked onto the combatants, overhearing the strange, telepathic conversation passing between the two reptiles.
*Swooosh*
Snivy leaped backward, narrowly avoiding a sweeping Dual Chop from the shiny dragon. Snivy's voice hissed mentally, her emerald eyes narrowing as she parried another blow, 'Why? Why do you follow him? A human who traps you in a sphere? Why subject yourself to that?'
*Rmbl*
Axew snorted, digging his clawed feet into the dirt. With a guttural roar, he unleashed a fierce burst of Dragon Rage that scorched the grass around Snivy's feet. Axew's voice rang back, steady and filled with fierce pride: 'He didn't trap me. I was an outcast in the wild. Being shiny, my herd didn't exactly treat me well because I looked different. Master found me with my pack, offered a hand to those wishing to join him, and gave me a home. He didn't force me into anything. He offered a choice, and I took it gladly.'
Snivy's eyes widened slightly at the confession. Gritting her teeth, she spun around, gathering the ambient wind to unleash a ferocious Leaf Tornado.
*WHOOSH*
The swirling vortex of razor-sharp leaves slammed directly into Axew, picking him up and violently casting him back against the dirt. Dust and debris kicked up into the air. Axew hit the ground hard, rolling twice before coming to a halt.
N watched intently. Snivy sneered, stepping forward to finish the match with a decisive Leaf Blade. For a second, Axew lay motionless…
*Shiii*
Then, a brilliant, glowing orange aura flared to life around the tiny dragon's scales. Axew's inner voice roared with a ferocity that shook the air, 'I won't... fail him!'
Using Endure, Axew absorbed the lingering kinetic shock of the tornado, turning the sheer damage right back around. As Snivy rushed in for the final strike, Axew pushed himself up with an explosive burst of energy, slamming his tail forward in a brilliantly timed Counterattack using Counter.
*BAM*
The sheer concussive force caught Snivy completely off guard, launching the grass-type backward through the air until she hit the ground hard right beside N, completely fainted. N dropped to his knees immediately, gathering his fallen Pokémon into his arms.
He didn't use Poké Balls, so he held them close against his chest, murmuring gentle, soothing words to ease their pain. As he knelt there, N listened one last time to the lingering mental echoes of Axew.
The shiny dragon was panting heavily, struggling to stay upright on his stubby legs, yet his mind radiated a blinding light of absolute devotion. Axew thought, his voice trembling with exhaustion and pride, 'I won't fail my new leader, Azure... I'll keep getting stronger, and I'll face even tougher foes by his side. I'm going to show him that his trust in me wasn't misplaced.'
From nearby, Zorua and Zweilous trotted over, the dragon still resting its heavy body partially on Zorua, both letting out cheerful, encouraging noises to celebrate their teammate's hard-fought victory.
N looked up from his unconscious team, his green eyes wide with a profound, unsettling confusion. Every single Pokémon he had listened to—the ones wrapped in illusions, the ones carrying dragon blood, the ones that had just fought—did not feel oppressed. They felt loved…
They felt respected. They felt free.
Before N could process the cognitive dissonance breaking apart his entire worldview, a shadow fell over him. Azure stood nearby, holding out a small, red-and-white cylinder case. Azure offered casually, holding out three Max Revives and three Full Restores in a calming tone, "Here. Your friends took a heavy beating. They need these to patch up, and since you don't use Poké Balls to halt their injuries in storage, you'll need to administer these the old-fashioned way."
N stared at the items in Azure's hand for a long, silent moment. Slowly, he reached out and took them, his fingers brushing against the cool metal of the containers. N murmured, his voice barely above a whisper, "Thank you…"
He set to work immediately, using the medicine to revive his team. Once his Pokémon stirred back to consciousness, N stood up, dusting off his clothes. He looked at Azure, his expression a turbulent storm of uncertainty.
He turned his gaze toward the ground, his mind reeling as he tried to piece together the shattered pieces of his ideology. N said quietly, "I... I apologize for not properly introducing myself earlier. My name is N. And… It seems... I have found yet another puzzle I cannot solve…"
Without waiting for a reply, N turned on his heel and walked away, disappearing down the residential street as the afternoon shadows lengthened around him. Black finally stepped forward, his eyes wide and jaw slack.
He pointed a finger down the street, asking, "Who... who was that guy?! He just showed up, started battling, and talked like a total weirdo!"
*Swooosh*
Azure just offered an ambiguous, knowing shrug, keeping his thoughts to himself. Suddenly, a swirling patch of darkness materialized right beside Azure's shadow. With a soft giggle, a shiny, pitch-black Gengar stepped out of the dimensional fold, floating a few inches off the ground effortlessly.
She held a sleek Rotom Phone proudly in her paws, tapping the screen to display a freshly uploaded post on her personal Pokebook account. Azure glanced down at the screen. Attached to the post was a crystal-clear image file titled: [Image Attached: GhetsisWaddling.jpg]
The caption beneath it read in bold letters as Azure grinned, holding a laugh: [Mission accomplished, Boss! The 'Great Liberator' has a new appreciation for spicy condiments and high-quality elastic!]
Azure let out a low, breathy chuckle, shaking his head. He replied in a happy tone, "Good girl, Gengar. Good girl. Sabotaging the local cult leader's trousers is a nice touch of community service."
Gengar grinned wickedly, flashing a mouthful of sharp, pearly teeth before sinking back into the shadows with a satisfied hum. At that exact moment, the patter of hurried footsteps signaled the arrival of White, who came jogging up the pathway alongside Black's Tepig, huffing slightly for breath.
White asked, panting as she looked around the scarred patch of grass, "Phew! What on earth just happened?! I just heard the sounds of a massive battle going on from two blocks away! Is everyone okay?"
Azure replied smoothly, adjusting the Pikachu on his shoulder and giving the Eevee a reassuring scratch behind the ears, "I'll explain the whole thing once we get to the Pokémon Center. My team needs a proper check-up after that workout."
Nearby, Black finally looked down at the Galvantula he had managed to capture earlier. The electric spider-type eyed the battle with longing, blinking up at the loud-mouthed trainer with wide, curious compound eyes. A wide grin split Black's face as he declared loudly, pumping his fist in the air, "Alright, Tula! You're gonna be my official partner from here on out!"
The Galvantula let out a joyful, crackling chirp of static, spinning a tiny, celebratory web right between Black's fingers. With the afternoon sun finally dipping below the horizon and painting the sky in brilliant hues of violet and orange, Azure turned and began walking down the road toward the Pokémon Center…

[Unova Region, Meanwhile, Accumula Town]
The shadows of the trees stretched across the path as N left Accumula Town behind. His Purrloin walked beside him, occasionally nudging his hand.
She queried, 'N? You are quiet.'
N replied softly, "I am listening."
But for the first time in his life, the voices of the Pokémon weren't the only thing he heard. He heard the echo of Azure's commands. There was no dominance in Azure's voice. There was... resonance.
N stopped and looked at his palms. He had felt Axew's resolve. The dragon hadn't been afraid of its trainer's disappointment; it had been afraid of failing its friend. N wondered, 'Is it possible? Could the Poké Ball be a symbol of a contract rather than a prison?'
He thought of the Legendary Dragons of Unova—Reshiram and Zekrom. He had been told he was the one to awaken them, to lead the charge for a world where Pokémon lived free of human interference.
But Azure Sky didn't interfere with his Pokémon. He amplified them. And that realization—the terrifying, creeping doubt that bloomed in the dark corners of his consciousness—forced N's mind backward, pulling him away from the quiet streets of Accumula Town and dragging him down into the suffocating depths of memory…

[Flashback, Unova Region, Team Plasma Castle]
The towering, vaulted arches of the Team Plasma castle throne room stretched upward into the gloom, draped in the heavy, oppressive purples and blacks of the organization's banners. The air smelled of cold stone, ceremonial incense, and the silent, breathless anticipation of hundreds of masked grunts standing rigidly in formation.
N could feel the weight of a thousand gazes pressing down on him. But worse than the gazes was the silence…
The absence of true connection.
*Clack-Clack-Clack*
The sound of heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the marble floor. At the center of the dais stood Ghetsis, his long, flowing robes sweeping the ground, his monocle gleaming with a cold, calculating light.
Flanking N were his two foster sisters, Anthea and Concordia, their faces masks of serene, practiced obedience, their hands gently resting on either side of his arms to guide him forward.
Ghetsis's voice boomed, rich with theatrical authority that masked the venomous ambition beneath, "Step down, N…"
N remembered stepping forward, his boots feeling like lead.
He remembered the Seven Sages—Bronius, Gorm, Rood, Zinzolin, Ryoku, Giallo, and Smles—nodding in solemn, synchronized unison from the sides of the hall. To them, this wasn't just a coronation; it was the chess piece moving into position. It was the ignition point of the grand crusade.
Ghetsis had stepped up onto the dais, lifting a heavy, ornate crown forged from cold metal and jagged, unnatural geometry—a crown designed not to honor a king, but to shackle a symbol.
As the heavy metal settled onto his green hair, pressing uncomfortably against his brow, Ghetsis raised his arms to the cavernous ceiling. Ghetsis's voice had reverberated off the stone walls, dripping with charismatic fervor, "Hear me, Team Plasma! Today marks the dawn of a new era! Today, the true king ascends! Our sacred mission to liberate all Pokémon from the tyrannical bonds of humanity shall be fulfilled!"
The grunts had cheered then. A deafening, roaring wave of blind fanaticism that made N's skin crawl even then.
Ghetsis had continued, his hand resting heavily, uncomfortably, on N's shoulder, steering him toward his grand destiny, "And with him," "our glorious king shall seek out, befriend, and command one of the legendary Unova Dragons—the Dragon of Ideals, or the Dragon of Truth! With the power of the dragon, humanity will yield, and the liberation of all Pokémon shall be absolute!"

[Present, Unova Region, Accumula Town]
N squeezed his eyes shut in the present day, his fingernails digging painfully into the palms of his hands as the memory faded, leaving behind only the stinging ache of reality. He opened his eyes, staring out into the empty Unovan sky.
Ghetsis had preached that humans were corrupt, that Poké Balls were cages, and that Pokémon could never truly smile beside a trainer. Yet, Azure—entirely untouched by the dogma of Team Plasma—commanded a team of powerhouses who fought with joy, who chose their battles willingly, and who looked at their human not as a master, but as a leader and a brother.
Azure had healed N's defeated Pokémon without asking for anything in return. He had looked at N not with hatred or hostility, but with the calm, steady gaze of someone who simply lived in a truth N couldn't yet comprehend.
N let out a ragged, trembling breath, slowly unclenching his fists. The puzzle pieces in his mind were shifting, grinding against one another, threatening to shatter the entire world he had built his identity upon.
N muttered, the name tasting like ash and iron, "Azure Sky..."
N thought, his brow furrowing, 'He is a puzzle with no edges. He has won four leagues. He has saved worlds. And yet, he sits in the grass and feeds his friends by hand. He gave me medicine for friends he just defeated.'
N looked back toward Accumula Town. He could see the distant glow of the Pokémon Center's neon sign as he thought, 'If he is the Hero of Truth, then the truth is more complex than Ghetsis told me. If he is the Hero of Ideals, then his ideal is a world I haven't even dared to imagine.'
N felt a strange, fluttering sensation in his chest—a spark of something he hadn't felt in the palace of Team Plasma. It wasn't the cold fire of a revolution. It was the warm, terrifying light of curiosity. N whispered to the wind, "Azure Sky. I will see you again. And next time... I will hear the voice of your heart directly."
He stood up, pulling his jacket tight against his skin, his gaze fixed on the distant lights of the Pokémon Center where Azure and his friends rested. The puzzle was incomplete, the edges jagged and impossible to force together.
But for the first time in his life, N knew he couldn't simply walk away from it. He turned and continued into the dark woods of Route 2, a king without a crown, searching for a truth that was no longer black and white…
