Need Has Hands
Chapter 54
The next request came with blood still wet.
That made it harder to refuse.
It also made it harder to accept.
Nishida arrived at Kyoto before the morning training bell, one hand wrapped in a field cloth already soaked through at the knuckles, the other holding a folded site map against her chest as if the paper might run away if she loosened her grip. She did not come through administrative review. She did not send a messenger first. She did not arrive smiling. She did not bring flowers, praise, correction requests, or a report title pretending to know what had happened.
She arrived at Oda’s archive door and said one sentence.
"I need help"
Then she stopped.
That mattered.
She did not say I need you
She did not say send the children
She did not say there is no adult alternative
She did not say you are the only ones who can do this
She said what was true and then let the room decide whether truth had become pressure.
The archive went still around her.
Daigo was the first to speak.
"No"
Nishida closed her eyes.
"Accepted"
Daigo looked startled.
"I did not mean no to help"
"I know"
"Then do not accept it like that"
Nishida opened her eyes.
"I accepted the boundary, not the refusal"
Oda, standing beside the shelf of restricted field notes, wrote before anyone could stop her.
Need route arrived with blood.
Initial phrase:
“I need help”
Requester stopped after phrase.
Boundary accepted before request clarified.
Daigo looked at the tag.
"This is already awful"
"Yes" Oda said
Moriyama moved toward Nishida.
"Medical first"
Nishida’s jaw tightened.
"I can brief first"
Moriyama’s voice did not rise.
"Medical first"
Nishida looked like she wanted to argue.
Sawamura, who had been sorting the Kusunoki restricted field correction near the table, closed his folder.
"If you brief while bleeding, every word becomes harder to refuse"
Nishida went still.
Akiha looked at Sawamura.
Daigo muttered "Provisional man survives again"
Nishida looked down at her hand.
Then nodded.
"Medical first"
She sat.
Sawamura cleaned the wound under Moriyama’s supervision because the injury was not curse-deep, only torn skin, splintered nails, and residue burns across the knuckles. The kind of wound someone got from punching through a semi-manifested barrier without enough time to do it elegantly.
Hayato watched from the far end of the table, pale but present.
He had not been summoned.
He had arrived for morning record work and now stood inside a sentence that began with I need help
Miyo stood near the archive window. Not hiding. Not offering.
Akiha stood beside Rei.
Tomonari entered halfway through the bandaging, took one look at Nishida’s hand, then at the map, then at everyone’s faces, and silently placed his notebooks on the table.
Rei did not move toward the map.
He wanted to.
That was why he did not.
Daigo saw.
Good.
Moriyama finished binding Nishida’s hand.
"Now brief"
Nishida placed the map on the table.
It showed an old municipal children’s shelter outside the eastern district, long since converted into a temporary storehouse for disaster supplies. The name at the top had been crossed out twice, then rewritten by hand.
Mizunashi Temporary Child Relief Storehouse
Nishida spoke carefully.
"Site was inactive. Civilian municipal staff entered yesterday to retrieve emergency blankets for a flood shelter. Two workers heard children crying inside the rear dormitory wing. The building has been empty for twelve years"
Daigo said "That is never good"
Nishida continued "Field team entered last night. Four adults. No students. We found no living children. We found rooms arranged as if children had been recently present. Small shoes. bedding. meal trays. writing exercises. All fresh enough to be impossible"
Akiha’s eyes sharpened.
"Memory site?"
"Partly. Curse appears to produce child-presence pressure without actual children, then forces responders to choose between search continuation and evacuation"
Tomonari said "A site that makes adults unable to stop looking"
Nishida nodded.
"Yes"
Hayato whispered "Because if you stop, maybe you left a child"
Nishida’s face changed.
"Yes"
Rei looked at the map.
The rear dormitory wing had three long corridors, each marked in Nishida’s hand with red circles.
"Where are the real people?"
"Two municipal workers outside. One injured sorcerer evacuated. Two field assistants still on perimeter. One Grade 2 adult inside"
Moriyama’s gaze hardened.
"Who?"
Nishida swallowed.
"Fujisaki"
The room changed.
Mina’s instructor.
The one who had pinned the wrong staff note.
The one Hayato had corrected publicly.
The one who had changed the wording.
Daigo said "Of course"
Not cruel.
Tired.
Nishida continued "Fujisaki remained inside because a child voice called from Room 3B using her name. We believe the voice may be linked to one of her lower instruction students. Not physically present. But the voice matched"
Hayato’s hands tightened.
"Mina?"
Nishida looked at him.
"No confirmation"
That was not no.
Everyone heard it.
Hayato’s face went white.
Nishida spoke faster, then stopped herself.
Good.
When she continued, her voice was steadier.
"Fujisaki refused to leave until she could verify. We attempted adult extraction. The building punished direct orders and direct reassurance. When we said there are no children here, the walls began producing more voices. When we said you must leave, the corridor lengthened. When I tried to break through the dormitory barrier, it burned my hand and gave me three child voices at once"
Moriyama said "Why come here?"
Nishida breathed.
"Because this is a need route. I know that. I am asking anyway"
No one spoke.
Nishida looked at Hayato first, then away before it became direct pressure.
"The site uses adult responsibility. It makes leaving feel like abandonment and staying feel like rescue. The adults inside are not making good decisions. I am not making good decisions. I am aware enough to say that before returning"
Oda wrote.
Requester names impaired adult decision-making before requesting student-related function.
Nishida looked at Moriyama.
"I need functions. Not children as labels. Functions"
Akiha said "Name them"
Nishida nodded once.
"Function one: language to distinguish search responsibility from abandonment when a child voice may be false"
Hayato flinched.
"Function two: observer count of adult guilt pressure and corridor response"
Akiha’s jaw tightened.
"Function three: residual trace to determine whether any real child link exists"
Rei felt the map pull at him.
"Function four: exterior disruption and physical stop if adults rush"
Daigo exhaled through his nose.
"Function five: watcher route. Something moved outside the Kusunoki site. The Mizunashi site may be connected"
Miyo’s eyes narrowed.
"Function six: formal language for report and field lead correction afterward"
Tomonari looked down at his notebook.
Nishida stopped.
Then said "I have adult alternatives for some functions. They are slower or already failing. I do not have adult alternatives for all functions in time. That is not a claim of ownership. It is a field assessment"
The room stayed quiet.
Need had hands.
Wet bandage.
Map.
Names.
Possible child voice.
An adult trapped by responsibility.
A well-meaning adult asking for help because the adult alternative had already begun failing.
This was not the useful children route wearing a smile.
This was the useful children route with its hands bleeding.
Moriyama looked at Oda.
Oda placed a blank sheet in the center of the table.
At the top, she wrote:
NEED ROUTE
When refusing use may increase harm to someone else.
Daigo said "I hate this one already"
Akiha said "Yes"
Tomonari said "Need can be real and still coercive"
Miyo said "Real need is harder to refuse than false need"
Hayato whispered "Maybe because it should be"
Everyone looked at him.
He swallowed.
"If someone needs help, refusing should be hard. Not impossible. But hard"
Oda wrote that too.
Refusal may be hard without being forbidden.
Rei stared at the map.
He thought of the system message.
Usefulness is not ownership.
Refusing ownership does not require refusing usefulness.
Now the reverse appeared.
Refusing use did not require pretending need was false.
Moriyama said "Roles only if consent is real"
Daigo muttered "Consent during bleeding-hand request is cursed"
Nishida nodded.
"Yes"
Akiha asked "Can the site wait?"
Nishida answered immediately.
"No"
Then corrected.
"I believe it cannot wait safely. Fujisaki has been inside for forty-three minutes since last direct contact. Corridor distortion increased after twenty. We estimate decision degradation after fifty. That estimate may be wrong"
Tomonari wrote the numbers.
"How long until return?"
"If we leave now, arrival in twenty minutes"
Hayato looked at Moriyama.
"If Mina’s voice is false, Fujisaki still hears it"
Moriyama nodded.
"Yes"
"If it is true?"
Nishida said "Then a real student may be linked from outside the building, not physically inside. Possibly through name, fear, or prior classroom language"
Hayato’s voice shook.
"Then we need to know"
Daigo said "We need to know. Not you alone"
Hayato nodded.
"Yes"
Akiha said "Hayato’s function?"
Moriyama looked at him.
"Potential lower instruction language context. Not lure. Not proof. Not child voice interpreter"
Hayato breathed.
"I want to go"
Daigo’s mouth opened.
Closed.
Good.
Hayato continued "I do not want to enter the dormitory wing. I want to be at perimeter where I can say if adult words are making it worse"
Moriyama nodded.
"That is a valid role"
Daigo said "I go"
Moriyama looked at him.
"Function"
"Exterior stop. Adult rush. If someone tries to force through because child voice says hurry, I stop them"
"Interior?"
"No child-room entry unless called by field lead"
He hated saying it.
Said it anyway.
Akiha said "I go"
"Function"
"Observer count. Adult guilt pressure. Room response. Also Rei’s sight check if he starts taking over"
Rei said "I go"
"Function"
"Residual trace. Determine whether there is real child link. Anchor direction. No solo rescue calculation"
Daigo pointed.
"Ugly words if you do"
"Yes"
Miyo said "I go exterior"
"Function"
"Watcher route. Kusunoki unresolved movement may have follow-up. No vanishing pursuit"
Tomonari said "I remain archive-side"
Everyone looked at him.
He continued "I want to go. That is not sufficient. If the site produces false responsibility, formal report correction may be needed immediately from outside the pressure field. I can receive field updates and write language while not being affected by the building"
Daigo said "That is annoyingly correct"
Tomonari looked pained.
"Yes"
Sawamura said "I go"
Moriyama looked at him.
"Function"
"Field safety. Replacement function uncomfortable. Not Kitahara. Useful anyway"
Daigo muttered "He is quoting himself now"
Oda said "Recorded"
Nishida looked at Oda.
"Will you come?"
Oda’s face became more severe.
"No"
Nishida accepted immediately.
Good.
Oda said "I remain to preserve the first truth before the site eats it"
That sentence helped more than her presence would have.
Maybe.
The deployment note was written in four minutes.
Emergency Deployment — Mizunashi Temporary Child Relief Storehouse
Threat:
Site produces child-presence pressure and false / uncertain child voices.
Adults inside unable to distinguish search responsibility from abandonment.
Fujisaki trapped inside dormitory wing.
Need route acknowledged:
Real need may pressure student usefulness.
Counter:
Roles named.
Consent recorded.
Refusal remains possible.
No role becomes standing obligation.
Roles:
Moriyama Keiko — field lead
Nishida — site knowledge / injured field requester / no solo return
Sawamura Tetsu — field safety
Akiha Suda — observer count / adult guilt pressure / Rei overreach check
Mikage Rei — residual trace / real-link determination / anchor direction
Hayato Inoue — perimeter language context / adult overmeaning correction / no dormitory entry unless separately chosen
Zenin Daigo — exterior rush interruption / physical stop / no dormitory entry unless called
Miyo — exterior watcher route / no pursuit
Kamo Tomonari — archive-side formal language / report correction / need-route record
Oda — archive preservation / first-truth record
Known risk:
Need will try to make refusal immoral.
Principle:
Refusal may be hard without being forbidden.
Oda stamped it so hard the paper jumped.
Then they left.
The ride to Mizunashi was worse than Kusunoki.
Kusunoki had been a building with children inside.
Mizunashi was a building that might have none.
That was worse in a different way, because every adult responsibility in the body screamed that absence could not be trusted.
Hayato sat between Daigo and Akiha this time.
Daigo had not objected.
Akiha watched the road.
Rei sat opposite them with Sawamura and Nishida. Nishida’s bandaged hand rested in her lap. She kept looking at it, not as if it hurt, but as if it were evidence against her.
Sawamura noticed.
"Your injury is not proof that breaking through was correct"
The genuine version of this novel can be found on another site. Support the author by reading it there.
Nishida smiled without humor.
"I know"
"Do you?"
"No"
"Good"
Daigo muttered "He has caught the disease"
Akiha said "Enough language travels"
Daigo looked horrified.
"Not to adults like that"
The storehouse stood beyond a chain fence near a drainage canal, low and gray, with boarded windows on the lower floor and a rear dormitory wing that looked older than the rest. The kind of place built for children in emergencies and abandoned when emergencies became records.
Two field assistants waited near the gate.
One was crying.
The other was repeating under his breath "We checked the registry. No children assigned. We checked the registry"
Miyo stopped before the gate.
"Watcher route"
Moriyama looked at her.
"Where?"
"Roofline across canal. Not person now. Residue of watching"
Daigo took position near the gate.
"I have adults"
Hayato stood beside him.
Not behind.
Beside.
Nishida gave status.
"No direct contact for fifty-seven minutes"
Moriyama’s face hardened.
"Fujisaki"
The crying assistant pointed toward the rear wing.
"She answers sometimes. Then the children answer instead"
Rei felt the building before entering.
Not cursed pressure in the simple sense.
Expectation.
The kind that formed around unanswered cries, missing children, old beds, adults who arrived too late, and rooms that remembered being needed.
The curse was not strong.
The field was.
That made it worse.
Moriyama raised her voice.
"Fujisaki. Kyoto field lead at front entrance. We are not asking you to answer yes or no. We are stabilizing the hallway"
For a moment, nothing.
Then from inside, far down a corridor, a woman’s voice.
"Room 3B"
Then a child’s voice.
"Sensei"
Hayato’s face drained.
He whispered "Mina"
Nishida closed her eyes.
The field assistant sobbed.
Daigo said "Do not move"
The assistant stopped because Daigo had said it like a wall.
Moriyama said "Hayato"
He swallowed.
"It sounded like her"
"Does that mean she is inside?"
"No"
"Does that mean she is not?"
"No"
"Good"
He looked sick.
"Correct good is awful"
"Yes"
Rei opened his senses.
Residual Threading.
The building’s threads were tangled with names. Not bodies. Names.
Fujisaki’s name. Mina’s name. Other student names, some old, some current, some probably from registers. The curse had found a structure: adults responsible for named children. It did not need children physically present if the name could pull the adult.
"Name-link curse" Rei said
Sawamura looked at him.
"Real child link?"
"Not physical presence. Possible name resonance. I need closer to know if current Mina is affected"
Hayato whispered "Can it hurt her from here?"
Rei did not answer too fast.
"Maybe. Not through body directly yet. Through fear, dreams, response, or classroom residue. I do not know"
Hayato nodded.
No quieting answer.
Moriyama assigned.
"Entry team: Moriyama, Sawamura, Rei, Akiha. Nishida at threshold only. Hayato perimeter language. Daigo physical stop. Miyo exterior watcher. No one follows child voice alone"
The building’s front hallway smelled like dust and wet wood.
Old emergency posters hung crookedly on the wall.
SAFE CHILD CHECKLIST.
COUNT HEADS.
DO NOT LEAVE ANYONE BEHIND.
Someone had underlined the last line in red marker years ago.
The curse liked that line.
Rei could feel it.
The hallway lengthened as soon as Moriyama stepped past the first door.
Not visually.
Functionally.
The rear wing became farther away in the decision-making part of the mind.
Akiha said "Distance pressure"
Sawamura placed a marker tag on the wall.
"Anchor point one"
Moriyama said "Fujisaki. We are in the front hall. We are not asking you to leave yet. We are naming that child voices may be false or linked from outside"
Fujisaki answered.
"I know"
Then Mina’s voice.
"Sensei, you said if someone needs help, adults come"
Fujisaki made a sound.
Not a word.
Akiha said "Guilt spike"
Rei felt the name threads tighten.
"Room 3B pulling through teacher promise"
Moriyama said "Fujisaki. A promise to help does not require obeying every voice that uses a child’s name"
The building groaned.
A second child voice answered.
"Then you leave us"
Sawamura looked at Rei.
"Thread?"
"Not bodies. Name echoes. Strongest thread to Fujisaki’s current lower instruction class"
Akiha said "It is using the class relationship"
Moriyama spoke again.
"Fujisaki. Name one true action you can take without entering Room 3B"
Silence.
Then Fujisaki’s voice, shaking.
"Stay in hallway"
"Good. Stay in hallway"
A child voice laughed.
"Hallway is leaving"
Fujisaki sobbed.
The rear corridor stretched.
Sawamura’s anchor tag tore halfway off the wall.
Akiha said "It makes partial safety feel like abandonment"
Rei nodded.
"Anchor is not Room 3B. Anchor is the checklist"
Sawamura looked at the old poster.
DO NOT LEAVE ANYONE BEHIND.
The red underline pulsed faintly.
Of course.
Rei pointed.
"Old instruction became curse law"
Sawamura asked "Destroy?"
Moriyama said "Not yet. If destroyed wrong, building may interpret as leaving"
Akiha said "Reject ownership, not care"
Rei felt the thread from the checklist to Fujisaki, from Fujisaki to the dormitory wing, from the dormitory wing to names.
"We need rewrite the instruction"
Sawamura said "How?"
Hayato’s voice came from the entrance, carried through the hallway.
"Do not leave anyone behind does not mean go alone"
The building stopped.
For one breath.
Daigo shouted from outside "He is at perimeter!"
Moriyama said "Accepted"
Hayato continued, voice shaking but clear.
"It means count who is real, who is missing, and who is responsible with you"
The checklist pulsed.
Fujisaki’s voice broke.
"With you"
Moriyama said "Yes. With you"
The corridor shortened by one visible step.
Akiha breathed.
"Phrase reached"
Rei said "Checklist anchor weakened but not broken"
Sawamura placed a second tag near the poster.
Moriyama spoke.
"Fujisaki. We are making the count with you. Stay in hallway. Do not enter Room 3B"
A child voice screamed.
"Sensei!"
Fujisaki screamed too.
The corridor snapped long again.
Sawamura cursed under his breath.
Akiha said "Direct child distress overrides"
Rei felt something move outside.
Not in the building.
Through the name thread.
"Mina might be dreaming or hearing something"
Hayato heard from the entrance.
"Is she hurt?"
Rei closed his eyes.
Focused.
Careful.
Too many names. Too much guilt. Threads built from school rosters, old shelter logs, emergency lists. The System remained silent, but the Yuta reserve under his skin wanted to flood the pattern, and the Gojo efficiency template wanted to make the tracing too clean.
No.
Public ability.
Residue.
Enough.
"She is not inside. She is linked. Current fear response, likely at school or home. Not physical injury yet"
Hayato’s breath hitched.
Daigo said "Breathe!"
Hayato did.
Akiha said "Need route increasing"
Moriyama looked toward the rear.
"Plan"
Sawamura said "We rewrite checklist with anchor condition"
Rei said "We sever name echo to current class enough for Fujisaki to leave"
Akiha said "But not by denying the children are real people"
Hayato called "Do not say they are not real!"
The building liked denial.
They had already learned that.
Tomonari’s voice arrived through the portable relay paper in Sawamura’s field case.
Oda had insisted on it.
Tomonari spoke from the archive.
"Suggested wording. Do not leave anyone behind means no one goes alone into a false room. Count the living. Count the absent. Count the voices. Then assign responsibility outside the trap"
Oda’s voice followed.
"Too long"
Tomonari sounded irritated.
"Emergency version: no one goes alone because a room says child"
Hayato said "That one"
Moriyama nodded.
Sawamura took out a blank ward strip.
"Need ink"
Nishida stepped forward at the threshold.
Her bandaged hand lifted.
Moriyama looked at her.
"No blood"
Nishida froze.
The building seemed to lean toward her.
Blood-written responsibility would feed it.
Nishida lowered her hand.
"Right"
Sawamura used field ink.
Plain.
Not dramatic.
He wrote:
No one goes alone because a room says child.
Moriyama placed the strip over the red underline.
The hallway screamed.
Not with one voice.
With dozens.
"Sensei!"
"Here!"
"Don’t leave!"
"Adults come!"
"Room 3B!"
The field assistants outside started forward.
Daigo blocked them.
One tried to push past him.
Daigo caught his arm without hurting him.
"No"
The assistant shouted "You do not understand!"
Hayato stepped beside Daigo.
"He does. That is why he is stopping you"
The assistant turned on him.
"She is inside!"
Hayato flinched.
Then said "A voice is inside. We do not know if she is"
The assistant sobbed.
"How can we not go?"
Hayato’s voice shook.
"Together. With a plan. Not because the room says child"
Daigo looked at him with something like fierce pride and horror.
Inside, the ward strip caught.
The red underline beneath it bled through, then stopped.
The corridor shortened.
Fujisaki appeared at the far end.
On her knees.
Hands clamped over her ears.
A door behind her remained closed.
Room 3B.
The voice inside sounded like Mina.
"Sensei, please"
Fujisaki crawled one inch toward the door.
Moriyama moved.
"Fujisaki. Look at me"
Fujisaki did not.
Akiha said "She cannot look away from the door"
Rei followed the thread.
"The door has her promise"
Sawamura said "Can we cut?"
"If cut hard, backlash to linked child"
Hayato heard enough to whisper "No"
Moriyama said "Alternative"
Rei’s head hurt.
He hated that he knew.
"Transfer promise from door to count"
Akiha looked at him.
"Explain"
"She promised adults come if children need help. The door owns the promise. We make the promise answer to the count instead of the voice"
Tomonari’s voice through the relay said "Formalize shared responsibility"
Oda’s voice said "Careful"
Sawamura asked "Words"
Hayato answered first.
"Sensei, helping Mina means counting where Mina is"
The building shuddered.
Fujisaki froze.
Hayato continued, voice breaking.
"Helping a student does not mean obeying the first place her voice appears"
Fujisaki turned her head.
Not fully.
Enough.
Moriyama stepped forward.
"Fujisaki. Where is Mina’s body?"
Fujisaki sobbed.
"Not here"
"Where is Mina’s name?"
"Here"
"Who is responsible with you?"
Fujisaki looked at Moriyama.
"Kyoto field lead. Field safety. Hayato. The class registry. Her family contact"
The door shook.
Mina’s voice screamed.
"Sensei!"
Fujisaki cried harder.
But did not move toward the door.
Moriyama reached her.
"Stand"
Fujisaki stood.
The door to Room 3B opened behind her.
Inside was not a child.
It was a classroom made of old emergency lists, small shoes, moldy bedding, and paper mouths. At its center hung a rope of name tags, each one written in a different hand. Some old. Some fresh. One near the center read MINA INOUE in Fujisaki’s handwriting.
Hayato made a sound.
Daigo shouted from outside "Stay there!"
Hayato stayed.
Rei saw the anchor.
"Name tag. Current link. We need remove Mina tag without breaking the name"
Akiha said "Meaning?"
"Do not deny she exists. Do not let room hold her"
Sawamura prepared a containment strip.
Moriyama brought Fujisaki back two steps.
The curse lunged.
Not at Moriyama.
At the name tag.
If it swallowed the tag, maybe the link would deepen. Not physical transfer. Maybe nightmare. Fever. Fear. A child waking with a room in her mouth.
Rei moved before he had permission.
Not far.
Enough.
Akiha snapped "Rei!"
He stopped one breath before overreach.
Good.
Painful.
Sawamura saw.
"Name exact action"
"Thread hold on Mina tag only. No core engagement. Three breaths"
Moriyama said "Granted. Three"
Rei reached.
One.
The name tag burned cold.
Two.
The curse turned all its paper mouths toward him.
"Rei"
The room froze.
Akiha’s eyes widened.
Daigo shouted "No!"
Not because the curse knew.
Because the room had used his name.
The System flashed.
[Name pressure detected]
Do not answer.
Rei did not answer.
Three.
Sawamura’s containment strip hit the name tag.
Moriyama struck the rope above it.
Akiha shouted "The room used Rei’s name. Do not follow that route!"
Miyo’s voice from outside snapped through the open hall.
"Watcher moved when Rei’s name sounded!"
Daigo turned toward the roofline.
"Do not pursue!"
That was Miyo’s rule, thrown back at her before she needed it.
Good.
Miyo stopped.
Inside, the Mina tag tore free and fell into Sawamura’s containment cloth.
The curse screamed with old names.
Not current ones.
Old shelter names. Lost names. Emergency names. Children from years before, perhaps, or names copied from rosters until grief became arithmetic.
Moriyama looked at the room.
"We acknowledge abandoned names"
The curse paused.
Akiha whispered "Do not promise rescue"
Moriyama nodded.
"We do not obey this room"
Sawamura sealed the current-name tag.
Rei released the thread.
His vision blurred.
Akiha caught his sleeve.
"Cost"
"Headache. Name pressure. No answer given. Need check"
"Good"
Daigo shouted "Correct good!"
The curse recoiled from the living name being removed. Without current fear, it became old residue and old demand. Still dangerous. Less immediate.
Moriyama stepped forward.
"Fujisaki. Say the count"
Fujisaki trembled.
"Living current link: Mina Inoue. Not inside. Tag removed. Adults responsible outside room"
The curse thrashed.
"Old names?" Fujisaki whispered
Moriyama’s face hardened.
"We record. We do not enter because they command"
Fujisaki closed her eyes.
"Old names present. Record required. No current child body inside"
The room collapsed inward.
Not completely.
The curse did not die like Kusunoki’s paper body had.
It folded into the old emergency lists, shrinking into a dense knot of abandoned names and failed counts.
Sawamura sealed the doorway.
"Temporary containment. Needs full exorcism team and historical registry review"
Moriyama nodded.
"Fujisaki out"
They walked back through the shortened corridor.
No one ran.
That mattered.
At the entrance, Hayato looked at the containment cloth holding Mina’s name tag.
"Is she okay?"
Rei answered.
"She is not in the room. We need confirm her current state"
Moriyama turned to Nishida.
"Call lower instruction. Confirm Mina Inoue physically safe. Now"
Nishida did.
Her bandaged hand shook while holding the phone.
The wait lasted less than two minutes.
It felt longer than the corridor.
Mina was at home.
Feverish.
Sleeping.
Muttering about a hallway.
Alive.
Not inside.
Hayato sat down on the ground.
Daigo crouched beside him.
Did not touch.
"Temporary okay?"
Hayato nodded.
"No"
Daigo nodded back.
"Accepted"
The field was not over.
That was the part need did not mention when it asked for help.
The current child link had been severed.
Fujisaki had been extracted.
No child had been physically inside.
But the old shelter names remained.
The curse had not been exorcised.
And Rei’s name had been spoken by the room.
Akiha had heard it.
Daigo had heard it.
Miyo had connected it to the watcher.
Moriyama had heard.
Sawamura had heard.
Nishida had heard.
Hayato had heard.
That could not be made small.
The field report was written outside the gate before anyone returned to Kyoto.
Moriyama dictated.
Tomonari wrote from archive relay.
Oda corrected remotely because apparently she could judge wording through paper and spite.
Mizunashi Temporary Child Relief Storehouse — Initial Field Record
Incident:
Name-link curse using adult responsibility pressure and false / uncertain child voices.
Adult affected:
Fujisaki remained in rear dormitory hallway after hearing current student voice.
Current child link:
Mina Inoue. Physically not inside. Confirmed at home, feverish, alive. Follow-up required.
Key anchor:
Old emergency instruction “Do not leave anyone behind” distorted into command for solitary adult entry.
Correction:
“No one goes alone because a room says child”
Operational steps:
- field lead stabilized hallway without direct yes/no demand
- perimeter prevented adult rush
- student language context distinguished help from obedience to false room
- residual trace identified name-link and current tag
- observer identified guilt pressure and name-route shift
- exterior watcher movement observed when Rei’s name sounded
- current name tag removed without denying child’s reality
- old-name curse temporarily contained, not fully exorcised
Unresolved:
- old shelter names
- exterior watcher
- room spoke Rei’s name
- current child follow-up
- need route role-burden review
Daigo read the unresolved section.
"The room spoke Rei’s name"
No one corrected it.
Because it had.
Rei stared at the line.
Akiha stood beside him.
"Do not make it private"
"I know"
"Do you?"
"No"
"Good"
Hayato looked at him.
"Did it know because of you?"
Rei answered honestly.
"I do not know"
Daigo made a frustrated sound.
Not at him.
At the shape of the answer.
Miyo returned from the perimeter.
"Watcher route moved when name sounded. Across canal. Roofline charm, not person, I think. It withdrew when Daigo told me not to pursue"
Daigo said "I did a Miyo function"
Miyo looked at him.
"Badly"
"But correctly"
"Correct badly"
Oda’s voice through relay said "Preserved"
Daigo shouted toward the paper "No!"
The return to Kyoto was quiet.
Not tired quiet.
Not after Kusunoki.
This was heavier.
Because they had helped.
Because Fujisaki was alive.
Because Mina was not inside.
Because Rei’s name had been used.
Because the old shelter names remained behind a temporary seal.
Because real need had not been a trick, and the trap had still been inside it.
At the archive, Moriyama did not dismiss them.
She placed the deployment note beside the field record and wrote one question on the board.
Did need become ownership?
No one answered quickly.
Hayato spoke first.
"No"
Then swallowed.
"Not fully"
Daigo said "It tried"
Akiha said "Need asked. We named roles. The site used names. That is different"
Tomonari said "But the mission produced evidence that our functions are needed in similar incidents"
Miyo said "And evidence that using our functions exposes us"
Sawamura said "Especially Rei"
Everyone looked at Rei.
Not as accusation.
As fact.
Rei wanted to step back into hidden center.
Could not.
"The room said my name"
Oda wrote:
The hostile field spoke Rei’s name.
Known possibilities:
- watcher route supplied name
- report route supplied name
- residual response inferred name through field speech
- unknown
Akiha added:
No private interpretation.
Daigo added:
Do not let “unknown” become Rei’s fault.
Tomonari added:
Do not let “unknown” become harmless.
Miyo added:
Watcher moved at name.
Hayato looked at the tags.
Then added:
Need was real.
The name danger was also real.
Good.
Painful.
Good.
Moriyama asked Nishida for her correction statement before she left.
Nishida stood with her bandaged hand against her side.
"I requested help because my adult alternatives were failing in time. That was real. I also requested functions that exposed students to role burden and name risk. I do not withdraw the request. I accept review of the burden"
Oda wrote it.
Sawamura asked "Would you request again?"
Nishida closed her eyes.
That was the question.
The room did not help her.
She opened them.
"If the same facts existed, yes"
Daigo’s face tightened.
Nishida continued "But I would request with this record attached, and I would name before deployment that real need does not erase refusal"
Hayato said "Would you accept no?"
Nishida looked at him.
Her voice was quiet.
"I do not know how well"
Good answer.
Terrible answer.
Honest.
Hayato nodded.
"Better than saying yes too fast"
Nishida bowed.
"Yes"
After she left, the room sat with the worst truth of the day.
Some needs were real enough that adults might not accept no well.
That did not make them villains.
It made the structure necessary.
The letter to Satoru was written late.
No one wanted to write it.
That meant they had to.
Satoru,Hayato added:Need route active.
Nishida came bleeding and said:I need help.
She stopped after saying it.
Medical first.
Site:Mizunashi Temporary Child Relief Storehouse.
Empty building producing child voices.
Fujisaki trapped inside because she heard Mina’s voice.
Mina was not physically inside.
Name-link curse.
Old emergency instruction:Do not leave anyone behind.
Distorted into solitary adult entry command.
Correction:No one goes alone because a room says child.
Rei
I went perimeter.Akiha added:Mina was linked, not inside.
I hated that this was enough reason to need us.
I still think going was right.
I hate that too.
The site punished adults for not obeying child voices.Daigo added:Need was real.
Need also carried ownership pressure.
I stopped adults again.Miyo added:That is becoming a pattern.
I hate patterns when they are useful.
Watcher moved when Rei’s name sounded.Tomonari added:I did not pursue.
Daigo stopped me with my own rule.
Unacceptable.
Correct.
Old instruction became curse law.Sawamura added:Do not leave anyone behind was corrected into:No one goes alone because a room says child.
This should be Level 2 or restricted field language, not general slogan.
Nishida said she would request again under same facts.Rei added last:She also said she does not know how well she would accept no.
This honesty is concerning and useful.
The room spoke my name.Satoru’s answer came faster than anyone liked.I did not answer.
I do not know how it knew.
We wrote:No private interpretation.
Rei
That was becoming a category.
Rei and room,Daigo said "I hate how right that is"Need has hands.
Sometimes they are bleeding.
Do not let that make them holy.
Satoru
Akiha read on.
Nishida did better than most adults by stopping after “I need help”Sawamura nodded.Still dangerous.
Medical first was correct.
Bleeding requests are coercive even when honest.
Keep that.
Oda wrote nothing.
That meant she already had.
Hayato:You hated that going was right.Good.If it becomes easy, something has gone wrong.Rei read the final lines twice.Akiha:Need and ownership pressure can arrive in the same sentence. You already knew. Now it has blood on it.
Daigo:Useful patterns are the worst kind.Unfortunately, keep yours until better adults exist.
Miyo:Daigo using your rule on you is funny. Also correct.Suffer.
Tomonari:No one goes alone because a room says child.Restricted field language.Not slogan.Correct.
Sawamura:Adult honesty about not accepting no well is more useful than fake consent ethics.Continue being uncomfortable.
Rei:The room spoke your name. You did not answer.Good.Not praise.Survival note.
The vow did not pull.
This is not the hidden sentence yet.
But the surrounding structure is getting closer to your name.
Satoru
The surrounding structure is getting closer to your name.
Akiha read them too.
Daigo did.
Tomonari.
Miyo.
Hayato.
The room did not pretend otherwise.
Oda placed a new tag beside Rei’s name-risk record.
Surrounding structure approaching hidden center through name routes.
Do not panic into concealment-only strategy.
Daigo said "Why not?"
Oda looked at him.
"Because concealment-only strategy would make Rei the door again"
Daigo hated that.
So did Rei.
Good.
The System opened that night before Rei finished copying Satoru’s letter.
[Need Route event processed]
Requester:
Nishida
Initial phrase:
“I need help”
Coercion risks:
- visible injury
- real time pressure
- trapped adult
- possible current child link
- prior relationship to Hayato / Fujisaki / Mina
- insufficient adult alternatives
Protective responses:
- medical first
- roles named
- consent recorded
- refusal remained possible in structure
- student functions used under field lead
- post-incident burden review required
A second message followed.
[Mizunashi incident processed]
Threat:
name-link curse using adult responsibility and false / uncertain child voices
Anchor:
old emergency instruction
“Do not leave anyone behind”
Correction:
“No one goes alone because a room says child”
Outcome:
Fujisaki extracted.
Mina Inoue not physically inside.
Current name tag removed.
Old-name curse temporarily contained.
Full exorcism / historical registry review pending.
A third message appeared.
[Name Route Alert]
Hostile field spoke host name.
Host did not answer.
Known vectors:
- watcher route
- report route
- field speech inference
- unknown
Risk level:
increased
Warning:
Surrounding structure may approach hidden center through repeated correct names before identifying core secret.
Rei’s fingers went cold.
A fourth message appeared after a pause.
[New analytical principle registered]
Need can justify use.
Need cannot define ownership.
A request made under real harm requires stricter consent, not looser consent.
No extraction.
[No extraction issued]
Current progress:
need-route recognition / bloody request handling / name-link survival / refusal under real harm
Continue surviving consequence.
Rei copied every line.
Then wrote beneath them:
Need can be real.
Need can be right.
Need can still pressure the shape of me.
If the room says my name, I do not answer only because it sounds like me.
He stamped the page.
The mark came out crooked and too dark.
He did not fix it.
Far away, the unknown reader received the Mizunashi initial field record, the need-route note, the correction phrase, and the unresolved line.
The room spoke Rei’s name.
The gloved hand rested on that line.
For a long time.
Then the brush moved.
Name route produced response.
Host did not answer.
Cohort did not privatize.
They wrote it.
A second line.
Need route succeeded:
students accepted field use under named roles.
Ownership resisted afterward.
Cost:
host name surfaced.
A third.
Old-name curse contained, not resolved.
Useful.
The reader opened a new sheet beneath The Shape of Useful Children.
Next:
force return to unfinished need.
Old names remain.
If they refuse, old children remain uncounted.
If they accept, host name route deepens.
The brush paused.
Then added:
Let history ask for help.
The sheet was folded.
The next mission would not bleed at the door.
It would wait inside a list of names.
