The apology arrived carrying damage.
That made it dangerous before anyone read the evidence.
Iori came at second bell, alone, without the quiet gray escort that had followed her the first time she approached Akiha. Her sleeve cord was missing. Not cut. Removed. That mattered in the way small absences mattered when attached to retainer households, where a cord could mean assignment, trust, function, permission to carry messages, permission to be ignored safely, permission to enter rooms without being questioned because someone more important had decided you were beneath notice.
Without it, Iori looked more visible.
Not freer.
Visible.
Akiha saw that first.
Miyo saw Akiha see it.
Daigo saw Miyo see Akiha see it and whispered “No”
Tomonari did not whisper anything. His face had gone formal too quickly.
Hayato, who had been copying the boundary session record because Oda had decided that learning to copy ugly records was better than being protected from them by people who would later ask why he did not understand, looked up and then down at Iori’s empty sleeve.
Rei looked at the sleeve too.
Then at the packet in Iori’s hands.
Then at her face.
She had not dressed herself as a victim.
That made the room more careful.
Moriyama stood at the table.
Oda did not sit.
Sawamura, still provisional and still irritatingly correct in ways no one had approved, shifted one step toward the archive door and then stopped when Akiha looked at him.
He named it before she could.
“I moved toward door control because an unknown returning participant entered with a packet”
Daigo muttered “Fine”
Akiha nodded.
“Accepted”
Iori heard that.
Her eyes moved to Akiha.
Then away.
Good.
A direct appeal would have been a handle.
She bowed.
Not deeply.
Not shallowly.
Correct depth for a retainer who had come without the protection of the person who sent her.
“I request a visible place to put information”
Daigo’s eyes narrowed.
“That sentence is practiced”
Iori looked at him.
“Yes”

“What kind?”
“I do not ask to be forgiven before you read what I brought. I do not ask to stand inside your room. I do not ask you to treat my damage as proof of honesty”

Iori nodded.
“Yes”
Tomonari said “Who gave you that language?”
“Myself, after failing with worse language”
Oda wrote.
Daigo looked at Oda.
“You are writing everything”
“Yes”
“That was not complaint”
“Yes”
Moriyama looked at Iori.
“State damage”
Iori’s hand moved once toward the empty sleeve.
Stopped.
“My retainer cord was removed pending review”
Akiha asked “Because you approached me?”
“Because I approached you and failed to produce a clean result”
The words entered the room without asking permission.
Clean result.
Akiha’s fingers tightened around her board.
Miyo’s eyes sharpened.
Tomonari went very still.
Daigo whispered “There it is”
Iori continued “The official phrase was overextended contact without stable return value”
Hayato looked up.
“Return value?”
Iori looked at him.
“Yes”
His face changed.
Not anger.
Recognition of a phrase that should never have been near a person.
Oda wrote:

“I learned quickly after failing slowly”
Daigo frowned.
“That is annoying”
Akiha asked “Why bring them here?”

“Because if I keep them, they disappear with me. If I send them upward, they become proof I mishandled my function. If I bring them to you, I may be using you to preserve myself. That is why I named the boundary first”
The room went quiet.
There it was.
Not clean.
Not safe.
Useful.
Dangerous.
Miyo said “You are asking the room to hold evidence without letting evidence become apology”
Iori nodded.
“Yes”
Hayato asked softly “Can those be separate?”
Everyone looked at him.
Not because the question was simple.
Because it was the question.

“They have to be”

“Accepted”
Akiha said “No”
Everyone looked at her.

Akiha’s voice stayed level.
“Accepted partly. I decide whether I ask you anything about your approach to me. But if the packet concerns Tomonari, the annex, Miyo, Rei, Hayato, Daigo, or adults, I do not become the doorway”

“Correct”
Oda wrote:

The packet was opened on the floor first.
That was ugly.

The room understood.

The room released.

Daigo said “Then why say it?”
“Because it changes how I count her damage. Not how I trust her evidence”

The room felt older by the time the response packets were sealed.
