JJK: Behind The Strongest

The First Real Loss

Chapter 45

Absence arrived with an escort.

That was the first insult.

The second was that the escort was polite.

The messenger wore Kyoto administrative gray, carried a narrow dispatch case beneath one arm, and bowed with the exact depth appropriate for someone delivering inconvenience on behalf of people who wanted inconvenience to look procedural. Two junior clerks stood behind him with empty document tubes, which meant the dispatch had not come only to inform.

It had come to take.

Daigo saw the tubes first.

“No”

The messenger blinked.

“I beg your pardon?”

Daigo pointed at the tubes.

“No”

Moriyama stood at the archive table with the Historical-Route Integrity Consultation packet open in front of her, a brush still in hand from the observer-limit response they had been drafting for the third time because every version either made the children sound too important, too replaceable, or too easy to count.

Oda sat beside her, already looking at the messenger as if he had become a future label.

Kitahara stood near the window with a safety ledger under one arm and a cup of tea she had not yet touched.

That mattered later.

At the time, Rei only noticed that the tea was still full.

Akiha stood to his right.

Tomonari had three slips out.

Miyo stood in a visible corner, which had become normal enough to be worrying.

Hayato sat at the far end of the table, copying his role-refusal line into a cleaner notebook because Oda had told him that if a line was his, he was allowed to carry more than one version of it.

The messenger bowed again.

“I have a notice for Kitahara Rena-san, Moriyama Keiko-san, and Oda-san regarding temporary field-safety review reassignment”

Kitahara’s face changed.

Not much.

Enough.

Daigo said “No again”

Moriyama did not tell him to sit.

That was worse.

Oda held out one hand.

The messenger gave her the dispatch.

She did not open it immediately.

She looked at the document tubes.

“What are you here to collect?”

The messenger hesitated.

“Materials listed in the attached requisition”

“Which you have read?”

“I have been instructed to retrieve sealed field-safety originals connected to recent site reviews”

Oda’s eyes became very still.

“Originals”

The messenger’s hands tightened around the dispatch case.

“Yes, Oda-san”

Daigo whispered “Bad”

Miyo said “Already inside”

Akiha did not speak.

She was counting.

Rei could see it in the stillness of her gaze.

Messenger.

Two clerks.

Document tubes.

Kitahara’s untouched tea.

Moriyama’s brush.

Oda’s unopened dispatch.

Door behind the clerks.

Window beside Kitahara.

Archive table between adults and students.

Who watched the absence before the absence was named?

Oda opened the dispatch.

Read once.

Then placed it flat on the table.

No one touched it.

Everyone read.

Temporary Field-Safety Reassignment and Independent Review Notice

Effective immediately, Kitahara Rena is assigned to external field-safety audit rotation for a period of fourteen days, extendable pending review.

Purpose:

To ensure independent assessment of recent field-site handling, artificial watcher-route materials, storage-adjacent safety procedures, and student exposure protocols.

During reassignment:

- Kitahara Rena is relieved from direct supervision of incident-linked student field activities

- ongoing field-safety duties will be handled by Sawamura Tetsu, Grade 2 field instructor

- original field-safety materials from the abandoned paper workshop incident and lower watcher route inquiry are to be transferred to Independent Review custody

- copies may be requested after cataloguing

Note:

This reassignment is not disciplinary.

Daigo laughed once.

No humor.

“That note is lying”

The messenger looked alarmed.

Moriyama’s voice was flat.

“Zenin”

Daigo clenched his jaw.

Then corrected.

“The note says not disciplinary because it knows it looks disciplinary”

Oda wrote that down.

The messenger looked more alarmed.

Kitahara set the full cup of tea on the windowsill.

Very carefully.

Too carefully.

“Effective immediately?”

The messenger bowed.

“Yes, Kitahara-san”

“Departure?”

“Before noon”

Noon was less than two hours away.

Rei felt the room narrow.

Not physically.

Functionally.

Kitahara was field/storage route.

Kitahara was the adult who had almost taken the staff door, stopped, admitted it, corrected, and then moved visibly with Miyo. She was the adult who had distinguished interpretive burden from erasure burden. She was the adult who had told Hayato that useful should not be the only word he kept. She was not perfect.

That was why she was necessary.

Moriyama read the notice again.

Oda had not looked away from original field-safety materials.

Akiha spoke first.

“This removes a function before the consultation roles are selected”

The messenger looked at her as if he had not expected children to identify the shape of a notice aloud.

That meant he was new or poorly briefed.

Oda wrote:

ABSENCE ROUTE

Remove function before role selection completes.

Tomonari said “It also changes custody of originals before cataloguing criteria are agreed”

Oda’s brush moved harder.

Custody shift before category closure.

Miyo looked at Kitahara.

“The person who stopped before entering the staff route is removed from field staff route”

The room went quiet.

Kitahara’s face did not change.

Her eyes did.

Daigo stood.

“This is because of the paper workshop”

The messenger said “The notice states it is not disciplinary”

Daigo turned toward him.

“The notice can state it is a fish. It is still biting someone”

The messenger took half a step back.

Oda wrote:

Notice can state it is a fish.

Still biting someone.

Tomonari covered his eyes.

“Please stop preserving him”

“No” Oda said

Moriyama placed one hand on the notice.

“Kitahara”

Kitahara looked at her.

Moriyama asked “Do you intend to contest?”

The room stopped again.

That was the question.

If Kitahara contested, she could be framed as resisting independent review.

If she went, she left the group without field/storage function.

If Moriyama blocked it, Moriyama became a supervisor shielding her own field staff from review.

If Oda refused originals, the archive became obstruction.

Every answer had a handle.

Kitahara looked at the notice.

Then at the children.

Then at the untouched tea.

“No”

Daigo’s mouth opened.

Kitahara lifted one finger.

“Do not”

He stopped.

Barely.

She continued “If I contest now, the review becomes about my refusal. That lets them say the absence was necessary”

Rei’s stomach tightened.

Akiha’s jaw moved once.

Miyo looked down.

Tomonari whispered “Refusal can become evidence”

Hayato’s hands tightened around his notebook.

Kitahara nodded.

“Yes”

Daigo said “Then we just let them take you?”

Kitahara looked at him.

The question was too honest for the room.

“No. You do not let them. I go because the route is built so that my staying gives them more than my leaving”

Daigo looked furious.

“That is still losing”

The word landed.

Losing.

No one corrected it.

Kitahara’s expression shifted.

“Yes”

Silence.

Ugly.

Necessary.

It was the first time an answer did not become a clever route, a reframed stage, a corrected report, a refusal-safe option, or a better category.

Yes.

They were losing something.

Not everything.

Something.

The messenger stood too still.

Akiha noticed.

So did Miyo.

Akiha said “He is watching which of us reacts to loss”

The messenger blanched.

“I am not—”

Miyo said “You are”

Moriyama looked at him.

“Step outside”

The messenger bowed too quickly.

“I was instructed to await receipt”

“Step outside while still awaiting receipt”

He left.

The clerks followed after one confused glance at the tubes.

Moriyama closed the archive door.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then Daigo hit the table.

Not hard enough to damage.

Hard enough to be heard.

“I hate this”

Oda said “Good”

He turned on her.

“No”

She held his gaze.

“Correct good. Loss must be allowed to be loss before it becomes lesson”

Daigo froze.

His anger did not vanish.

It changed shape.

He sat down.

Badly.

Hayato looked at Kitahara.

“You are coming back?”

Kitahara’s mouth twisted.

“That is the intention”

“That is not the same as yes”

Daigo looked at him.

Hayato flushed.

Then said “No quieting answers”

Kitahara closed her eyes.

For one breath.

Then opened them.

“I am assigned for fourteen days. It may extend. I intend to come back. I cannot promise the route will allow that on schedule”

Hayato nodded.

He looked like he wanted the better answer and hated that he had learned enough not to ask for it.

Akiha unfolded her visible room slip, then refolded it.

No.

This was not about formal observer.

This content has been misappropriated from NovelFire; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

Not first.

Tomonari took a blank slip.

Oda stopped him.

“Not yet”

He looked up.

Oda’s voice was severe.

“Do not paper the loss before naming what is gone”

Tomonari set the brush down.

Moriyama nodded once.

“Function loss”

Akiha answered.

“Field/storage route adult who admits near-mistakes”

Daigo said “Adult who actually checked doors with us”

Tomonari said “Adult who can translate field-safety concerns without cleaning them into protection language”

Miyo said “Adult who can move visibly when watchers appear”

Hayato said “Adult who said useful should not be the only word”

Rei said “Adult who corrected wrong help after doing it”

Kitahara looked away.

Not far.

Just enough.

Good.

Oda wrote each line.

Not as praise.

As function record.

Kitahara function loss:

- field/storage route adult

- admits near-mistakes

- checks doors with students rather than only for students

- translates safety concerns without cleaning into protection language

- moves visibly when watcher routes appear

- corrected wrong help after participating in it

- preserved role refusal without making useful the only word

Daigo read it.

His mouth tightened.

“That is not enough”

Oda said “No”

Good.

No comfort.

Tomonari looked at the requisition.

“What originals are listed?”

Oda turned the page.

Her expression became worse.

Materials for transfer:

1. artificial roofline charm recovered from abandoned paper workshop site

2. field sketch of east drainage lower watcher route

3. Nakamura interview safety addendum

4. Hayase/Fushimi account conflict note

5. storage safety review request chain copies

6. Kitahara field-action annotations from paper workshop incident

Akiha said “That is too much”

Miyo said “That is the route spine”

Oda said “Yes”

Daigo said “Can they take it?”

Oda looked at Moriyama.

Moriyama looked at Oda.

Then Kitahara.

Kitahara answered.

“They can requisition field-safety originals under independent review”

Daigo’s voice went low.

“So yes”

Oda said “Yes”

Tomonari asked “Can copies remain?”

Oda’s eyes sharpened.

“Some already do”

Kitahara said “Not all”

Rei looked at her.

“Which not?”

Kitahara’s jaw tightened.

“Nakamura interview safety addendum. My field-action annotations. The Hayase/Fushimi conflict note exists in summary but not full copy”

Oda looked furious at herself.

“I was preserving chain integrity before copying”

Daigo said “Adult version of the delay mistake again?”

Oda’s eyes moved to him.

“Yes”

No softness.

No evasion.

Yes.

It still hurt.

Miyo said “They are learning what adults do before copying”

Akiha’s face went still.

“Remove before shame paper can exist”

Oda wrote:

Removal before shame copy.

The phrase was terrible.

Accurate.

Hayato whispered “Can we rewrite from memory?”

Oda looked at him.

“Memory summary. Not copy”

“Is that bad?”

“It is less strong”

Daigo said “Still better than nothing”

Oda nodded.

“Yes”

That yes felt like another loss.

Kitahara stepped forward.

“Then we do it now”

Moriyama looked at the clock.

Less than two hours.

Kitahara said “They want originals by noon. They did not say I cannot spend the morning talking”

Oda’s face changed.

Dangerous.

“Correct”

The next hour became brutal.

No one had time to make it elegant.

Good.

Kitahara sat at the table and reconstructed the Nakamura interview safety addendum from memory while Oda wrote, Moriyama cross-checked dates, and Tomonari flagged every place where memory language had to be marked as memory language rather than disguised as copy.

Akiha counted which details Kitahara remembered quickly and which made her pause.

Miyo watched what she did not say until asked.

Daigo asked rude questions because rude questions shook loose practical details.

Hayato wrote a separate line every time Nakamura had acted under a belief that he was helping safety.

Rei traced the relation between documents on a route map without touching the originals.

The Nakamura reconstruction began:

Memory Reconstruction — Nakamura Interview Safety Addendum

Recorded before original transfer to Independent Review custody

Status:

Not verbatim copy.

Reconstructed by Kitahara Rena from interview memory.

Witnessed by Moriyama Keiko, Oda, involved students.

Core content:

Nakamura believed assignment concerned prevention of repeat storage oversight.

He was instructed to note peer response irregularities.

He did not know phrase “paper keeper” before the comparison.

He received observation placement through storage safety review chain.

He did not know Hayase/Fushimi conflict.

He identified request as unusual only after audience integrity incident was explained.

Hayato added:

Nakamura may have been used through wanting to help safety.

Kitahara looked at him.

Then nodded.

“Add”

Oda added it.

The Hayase/Fushimi conflict summary came next.

Memory / Summary Note — Hayase/Fushimi Account Conflict

Hayase claims Fushimi passed request to observe peer response irregularities.

Fushimi denies initiating request and claims Hayase asked about peer structures first.

Both accounts may contain incomplete truth.

Conflict may have justified adult review and access reduction.

Full original note transferred before complete archive copy could be made.

Oda hated that final sentence.

Everyone saw it.

She wrote it anyway.

Daigo said softly “Good”

Oda did not look at him.

“Correct good”

“Still”

She nodded once.

Kitahara’s field-action annotations were hardest.

Because they were hers.

Because reconstructing them meant saying exactly where she had almost helped wrong.

Kitahara Field-Action Annotation Reconstruction — Paper Workshop Incident

Key self-notes:

- nearly accepted staff route when side door opened

- stopped after Akiha invoked protection language

- moved visibly with Miyo to inspect roofline charm

- did not pursue alone

- secured charm after Miyo identified artificial watcher pressure

- pinned correction anchor after Rei identified residue location and Hayato refused role

- broad report later over-centered my secured charm action

- safety language may clean student participation if not checked

Kitahara stopped after the last line.

Her hand shook once.

Only once.

Rei looked down.

Daigo did not.

He looked right at her and said “That line matters”

Kitahara laughed once.

Sharp.

“I know”

“No. I mean because you wrote it before leaving”

Her face tightened.

Then softened by no visible amount.

“Thank you”

Daigo recoiled.

“Absolutely not”

Kitahara smiled.

Tired.

Mean enough to survive.

“Accepted anyway”

Oda stamped the reconstructed packet.

Hard.

Then wrote across the cover:

ABSENCE COPY

Created under time pressure before original transfer.

Incomplete.

Necessary.

Do not clean into original.

Do not discard because incomplete.

Tomonari read the cover.

“Incomplete. Necessary”

Miyo said “Good loss language”

Daigo groaned.

“Loss language now?”

Akiha said “Yes”

He put his head on the table.

“I hate growth”

The messenger returned before noon.

This time, Moriyama made him stand inside the archive.

Visible.

Counted.

Oda handed over the originals one at a time.

With receipt.

With route note.

With protest attached.

With absence copy referenced.

The messenger looked as if he had never wanted a career.

When he took the artificial roofline charm, Miyo watched his hands.

When he took the lower watcher sketch, Akiha watched his eyes.

When he took the Nakamura addendum, Hayato looked down at his own copied line.

When he took Kitahara’s field annotations, Kitahara looked at the tube until the clerk sealed it.

Daigo said nothing.

That was how everyone knew he was very angry.

Oda wrote the transfer line.

Originals transferred.

Loss real.

Copies incomplete.

Route preserved imperfectly.

The words sat on the page.

No one improved them.

Kitahara had twenty minutes.

That was not enough for goodbye.

Good.

Goodbyes were sometimes lies people told to make leaving feel chosen.

This was not chosen.

So they did handoff instead.

Kitahara started with Moriyama.

“Replacement is Sawamura Tetsu. Competent. Too clean. Likes standard entry protocols. Does not know the children’s route language”

Daigo muttered “Then incompetent”

Moriyama said “Not the same”

Kitahara looked at Daigo.

“No. But dangerous in predictable ways”

To Akiha:

“Count whether he looks at you before doors or after doors. If after, he is reading site. If before, he is reading group. Both matter”

Akiha nodded.

“Yes”

To Tomonari:

“He will ask for proper classifications. Ask which classification changed after the incident”

Tomonari nodded.

“Yes”

To Daigo:

“Do not attack him for being clean until he uses clean as authority”

Daigo scowled.

“That is annoyingly specific”

“Because you are predictable when annoyed”

“I hate you leaving less if you insult me”

“Good”

To Miyo:

“Visible route does not mean straight route”

Miyo’s eyes sharpened.

Kitahara continued “If you need to leave a visible path, make sure it is not the only one you could have taken”

Miyo nodded once.

“Accepted”

To Hayato:

“If someone calls your refusal resilience, ask what they mean by resilience before accepting praise”

Hayato swallowed.

“Yes, Kitahara-san”

To Rei:

Kitahara stopped.

Rei looked at her.

She looked back.

“Name field risk before calculating rescue”

His chest tightened.

“Yes”

“Do not become replacement field-safety adult inside your head”

He closed his mouth.

Akiha looked at him.

Daigo looked too.

Rei forced himself to answer.

“Yes”

Kitahara’s gaze stayed sharp.

“I mean it”

“I know”

“No. You are learning. Different”

Sayuri’s line from the plum tree returned with humiliating force.

Rei nodded.

“I am learning”

Kitahara accepted that.

Then she looked at all of them.

“This is absence. Not abandonment”

Daigo’s mouth twisted.

“Is that a useful line or a comfort line?”

Kitahara considered.

“Both”

Miyo said “Dangerous”

“Yes”

Akiha said “Then we name the difference”

Oda placed a blank tag on the table.

Kitahara wrote it herself.

Absence is not abandonment if:

- function loss is named

- handoff is made

- return uncertainty is not hidden

- people left behind are not told to feel safe because leaving was procedural

Hayato read it.

Then asked “What if return does not happen?”

Kitahara paused.

Then wrote one more line.

If return fails, the loss becomes different.

Name again.

No one spoke.

That was the hardest line.

Oda stamped it.

Not cleanly.

Kitahara looked at the mark.

“Terrible stamp”

Oda said “Appropriate”

Kitahara smiled faintly.

Then left.

Not dramatically.

She picked up her field case, now lighter because the originals were gone, bowed once to Moriyama and Oda, nodded to the children, and walked out with the messenger waiting three paces behind her like a mistake that had learned not to stand too close.

No one followed to the gate.

Moriyama had said they could.

Akiha had asked whether following made Kitahara’s absence a procession.

Miyo had said processions report differently.

Daigo had said he hated that.

So they stayed in the archive.

The door closed.

And Kitahara was gone.

The room did not collapse.

That made it worse.

Things continued when someone useful left.

That was how loss became real.

Daigo stood very still.

Then said “I want to hit something”

Moriyama said “Training yard after lunch”

“No. Something responsible”

Oda said “Too many candidates”

Daigo almost laughed.

Did not.

Hayato stared at the door.

“She did not say she would definitely come back”

Rei said “No”

Hayato nodded.

“Good”

His voice broke on the word.

No one corrected him.

Akiha unfolded the new absence tag.

Read it again.

Then said “We need to decide what changes today”

Tomonari’s hands folded.

“Field activities involving incident-linked routes should pause until Sawamura’s function is assessed”

Daigo said “So absence gets to stop us?”

Miyo answered “Absence already stopped something. Pretending otherwise lets it choose what stops next”

Daigo looked at her.

Then away.

“Fine”

Moriyama said “No incident-linked field activity until Sawamura is briefed and evaluated”

Akiha said “Briefed by whom?”

Moriyama answered “Me”

Oda said “And the archive”

Daigo said “And us”

Moriyama looked at him.

He held her gaze.

“We know what Kitahara did. If Sawamura gets a clean adult briefing, we lose her function twice”

Silence.

Then Moriyama nodded.

“Yes”

Daigo looked startled.

Then suspicious.

“Good?”

Moriyama said “Correct”

He relaxed by half an inch.

Oda wrote:

Replacement briefing must include function loss, not only duties.

Tomonari added:

A replacement who receives only duties inherits title, not function.

Daigo groaned.

“That is painfully Tomonari”

Miyo said “Still correct”

The afternoon was not productive.

That, too, was part of the loss.

They tried to continue the annex observer criteria.

They failed.

Akiha kept looking at the window where Kitahara’s tea had been. Oda had not moved the cup. The tea had gone cold.

Daigo made three arguments too aggressively, then abandoned all of them.

Tomonari rewrote the same line four times and made it worse each time.

Hayato asked if he should leave because he was not core, then froze because he had used the word.

Miyo said “That word arrived through bad route”

Hayato nodded.

“I know. Sorry”

Akiha said “No. Correct it”

Hayato breathed.

“I am not required for every discussion. That is not the same as non-core”

Oda wrote it.

Hayato looked resigned.

Rei did almost nothing.

That was the most worrying part.

He sat with the route map and did not add to it because every line he wanted to draw seemed to move toward rescue, compensation, replacement, or blame.

Moriyama watched him.

Then closed the meeting early.

“No useful work remains today”

Daigo looked relieved and offended.

“We can still—”

“No”

He stopped.

Moriyama continued “Continuing would make the absence productive in the wrong direction”

Oda wrote.

Daigo whispered “Everything is a sentence now”

Miyo said “It always was”

Rei went home before sunset.

Haruto and Sayuri had already heard.

Of course.

They did not ask him if he was fine.

Good.

He was not.

At dinner, Sayuri said “Name what you lost”

Rei looked down.

“Kitahara-san”

Haruto said “Function”

He swallowed.

“Field/storage adult. Safety correction. Adult who admits wrong help. Visible movement with watchers. Someone who could make field risk practical”

Sayuri nodded.

“And what are you trying to do inside your head?”

He closed his eyes.

“Replace her”

Haruto said “With what?”

“Myself”

There.

Ugly.

True.

Sayuri’s voice was quiet.

“Do not”

“I know”

Haruto said “No. You want to know. Knowing would make you feel responsible enough to act. You need a structure that stops you when wanting to know becomes wanting to replace”

Rei opened his eyes.

“Structure?”

Sayuri said “Who names when you are doing it?”

He thought.

Akiha would.

Daigo would loudly.

Tomonari would structurally.

Miyo would horribly.

Moriyama would if present.

Oda would file it as something devastating.

“Everyone”

Haruto shook his head.

“Too broad”

Rei breathed.

“The field group”

Sayuri said “Still broad. Who first?”

He hated the answer.

That meant it was probably right.

“Akiha”

Sayuri nodded.

“Ask her”

“I hate needing to”

“Good”

He almost laughed.

Did not.

Haruto said “Also ask Daigo”

Rei looked up.

“Why?”

“Because he will notice when you turn guilt into movement”

True.

Horrible.

“Yes”

That night, Rei wrote two notes.

The first to Akiha.

Akiha,

If Kitahara-san’s absence makes me start acting like replacement field-safety adult, tell me first if you see it.

Do not soften it.

Rei

The second to Daigo.

Daigo,

If I turn guilt into movement because Kitahara-san is gone, stop me.

Use ugly words if necessary.

Rei

Daigo’s reply arrived in the morning.

Obviously.

Do not make me emotionally responsible in neat handwriting again.

Daigo

Akiha’s reply came after breakfast.

I will tell you.

I will not be the only one allowed to tell you.

Akiha

Good.

Painful.

Good.

The letter to Satoru took longer.

The group wrote it the next day, after deciding that Kitahara’s absence concerned the room and Hayato because his line had been one of the functions she preserved.

Satoru,

Absence route active.

Kitahara-san was reassigned to external field-safety audit rotation for fourteen days, extendable.

Effective immediately.

She is relieved from direct supervision of incident-linked student field activities.

Original field-safety materials were transferred to Independent Review custody.

We made absence copies before the originals left.

They are incomplete.

The loss is real.

Rei

Akiha added:

They removed a function before observer selection for the annex consultation completed.

The messenger also watched which of us reacted to the loss.

Daigo added:

This is losing.

Do not make it clever before saying that.

Tomonari added:

A replacement who receives only duties inherits title, not function.

Miyo added:

The person who stopped before entering the staff route was removed from the staff route.

Hayato added:

Kitahara-san said absence is not abandonment if return uncertainty is not hidden.

She did not hide it.

Rei added:

I asked Akiha and Daigo to stop me if I try to replace her inside my head.

This is not enough.

It is something.

The answer from Satoru came three days later.

The outer fold was uglier than usual.

That meant he had been angry.

Good.

Bad.

Both.

Rei and room,

That is losing.

Daigo is correct.

I hate that this is becoming common.

Satoru

No one spoke after the first three lines.

Akiha continued reading.

Absence route:

If a wall loses one guard, do not make one child become the missing guard.

Name the missing function.

Name what pauses.

Name what continues.

Name who benefits if everyone pretends nothing changed.

Satoru

Tomonari nodded slowly.

Akiha read on.

Originals moving matters.

Incomplete copies are still teeth.

Do not let anyone call them less important because they are incomplete.

Call them absence copies.

That is a good ugly term.

I regret liking it.

Daigo whispered “Good”

Akiha kept reading.

P.S. Akiha. The messenger watching reaction is part of the route. If possible, make the messenger’s watching more visible than your reaction.

P.P.S. Daigo. Losing is a correct word. Use it carefully or it becomes a hammer for every inconvenience.

P.P.P.S. Tomonari. Your title/function sentence is awful and useful. Make sure adults do not use it to make replacements perform sincerity.

P.P.P.P.S. Miyo. Staff-route removal is sharp. Check whether someone tries to make Sawamura stand where Kitahara stood or where she failed.

P.P.P.P.P.S. Hayato. Return uncertainty not hidden is a good condition. It still hurts. Both.

P.P.P.P.P.P.S. Rei. If you try to become missing field-safety adult, I will find out through the letters and be annoying from Tokyo.

This is not support.

This is a threat.

P.P.P.P.P.P.P.S. The vow did not pull.

This was not about the hidden sentence.

It was about the wall losing a guard.

Daigo looked at Rei.

“He threatened you”

“Yes”

“Good”

Rei sighed.

“Yes”

Oda read the letter after them.

Then placed it beside the absence tag.

“Less slow”

Daigo did not argue.

The System opened that night.

Rei did not want it to.

It did anyway.

[Absence Route event processed]

Support removed:

Kitahara Rena — field/storage route adult

Mechanism:

temporary external audit reassignment

immediate effect

original field-safety materials transferred

replacement assigned before function evaluation

Loss:

real

Preserved:

- absence copies created

- function loss named

- handoff recorded

- return uncertainty not hidden

- replacement briefing condition established

- host requested external correction for replacement impulse

Rei stared at Loss: real.

The System had never sounded kind.

It did not now.

That was better.

A second message followed.

[New analytical principle registered]

An absence can be a trap when removal changes future decisions before anyone argues about the missing person.

A third.

[Surrounding Structure update]

Good adult shields are no longer only pressure targets.

They are removable functions.

Warning:

The hostile observer may attempt to:

- make replacement inherit title without function

- make children overcompensate

- make loss appear procedural rather than strategic

- target incomplete copies as lesser evidence

No extraction.

Good.

Then:

[No extraction issued]

Current progress:

loss recognition / absence copy / function preservation / replacement impulse check

Continue surviving consequence.

Rei closed the System.

Then opened his notebook.

He wrote:

Today we lost something.

Not everything.

Something.

If I make “not everything” into comfort too quickly, I steal the loss.

If I make “something” into everything, I become easier to move.

Kitahara-san is absent.

Her function is not replaced.

The copies are incomplete.

The loss is real.

He stamped the final line.

Plain.

The mark came out uneven and too dark at one edge.

Appropriate.

The next morning, Sawamura Tetsu arrived.

He was clean.

Not morally.

Visually.

Uniform correct. Hair tied properly. Field case polished. Grade 2 badge visible. A man in his early thirties with a calm expression and the posture of someone who believed procedure was reliable because he had not yet learned all the ways procedure could be placed near bait.

Daigo saw him from the corridor and whispered “I hate him”

Akiha said “You hate his cleanliness”

“Yes”

Tomonari said “Assess function before judgment”

Daigo looked at him.

“I am assessing and judging”

Miyo said “He looks at doors first”

Everyone paused.

Sawamura had stopped outside the archive door.

His gaze moved to the hinges, the frame, the threshold, the seal line, then the people.

Akiha said “After doors, people”

Rei nodded.

“Site-reader before group-reader”

Daigo muttered “That is not bad”

Hayato whispered “Can someone be clean and not bad?”

Oda appeared behind them.

“Yes. Unfortunately, this complicates matters”

Daigo jumped.

“Stop appearing during character assessments”

“No”

Sawamura entered.

Bowed.

“Moriyama-san. Oda-san. Students. I am Sawamura Tetsu. I have been assigned interim field-safety duties”

Moriyama looked at him.

“You received the standard briefing?”

“Yes”

Oda asked “Only standard?”

Sawamura paused.

Good sign.

“I received administrative briefing. I suspect it was standard. I was advised to request any irregular operating language before field exposure”

Oda’s eyes narrowed.

“Who advised that?”

“Satoru Gojo’s letter was not involved, if that is the concern”

Everyone went still.

Sawamura blinked.

Then looked worried.

“That was intended as humor”

Daigo said “Bad humor”

Miyo said “How do you know the concern?”

Sawamura looked at Moriyama.

Then back at the students.

“I was told Kyoto students may ask route questions. I attempted to pre-answer poorly”

Oda wrote:

Replacement attempts humor.

Unclear if survivable.

Sawamura read it upside down.

“That seems fair”

Daigo frowned.

“I hate him less”

Akiha said “That was fast”

“I hate that too”

Moriyama placed the Kitahara function loss record on the table.

“You will not inherit Kitahara’s function by standing in her duties”

Sawamura read the title.

Then the function loss list.

All of it.

He did not rush.

Good.

He reached the end.

Then said “Understood”

Daigo leaned forward.

“No”

Sawamura looked at him.

“No?”

“You do not understand after one read. You can accept that the list exists”

Sawamura considered.

Then nodded.

“Correct. I accept that the list exists and that I do not yet perform those functions”

Oda wrote:

Promising correction.

Continue suspicion.

Sawamura looked at the tag.

“I appreciate the balanced assessment”

Daigo whispered “He may be insane”

Miyo said “Or trained by someone worse”

Sawamura was briefed for three hours.

Not by adults only.

That had been decided before he arrived.

Akiha explained audience shifts.

Tomonari explained route labels and why proper terms could be traps.

Daigo explained that if a private word entered a public fight, the proper response was not always hitting the person, though he remained philosophically flexible.

Miyo explained watcher routes by refusing to explain several things until Sawamura noticed that refusal itself changed where he looked.

Hayato explained role refusal, voice shaking less this time.

Rei explained residual thread analysis as one part of shared process and then stopped before becoming too helpful.

Sawamura listened.

He asked too many clarifying questions.

Some were good.

Some were dangerous because they tried to make the system neat.

At the end, Oda placed one tag in front of him.

INTERIM FIELD-SAFETY FUNCTION

Current status:

title assigned

function not yet earned

Sawamura read it.

Then bowed.

“I accept this”

Daigo looked annoyed.

“You cannot just accept everything ugly and become tolerable”

Sawamura looked at him.

“I will try to remain irritating in useful ways”

Daigo stared.

Then looked at Rei.

“I hate this”

Rei almost smiled.

The loss remained.

Sawamura did not fix it.

That was the point.

Kitahara was gone.

The originals were gone.

The copies were incomplete.

The function had been named, not replaced.

That was better than pretending.

It was not winning.

The final notice of the day arrived just before sunset.

Not from Independent Review.

From administrative routing.

A simple receipt.

Received:

Original field-safety materials listed under Temporary Field-Safety Reassignment and Independent Review Notice.

Cataloguing pending.

Copies may be requested after review.

Estimated response time:

undetermined.

Undetermined.

Daigo read it.

Then handed it back.

“No”

Oda said “Yes”

He shook his head.

“No. That is the loss trying to become fog”

Akiha nodded.

“Undetermined response time means the originals are unavailable without admitting they are unavailable”

Tomonari said “Absence without name”

Miyo said “Fog route”

Hayato said “Can we ask for the date?”

Moriyama said “Yes”

Oda wrote:

Do not let undetermined become weather.

Request date, custodian, and review stage.

The request was sent.

They did not get an answer that day.

That was also part of the loss.

Far away, the unknown reader received confirmation of the reassignment, the material transfer, the absence copy cover, Sawamura’s interim function tag, and the first request for custodian/date/review stage.

The gloved hand rested on:

Originals transferred.

Loss real.

Copies incomplete.

Route preserved imperfectly.

A pause.

Then:

First removal succeeded.

They named the loss instead of denying it.

Replacement not yet accepted as function.

Original custody shifted.

The brush stopped above the word Originals.

Then wrote:

Do not return originals quickly.

Let incomplete copies work.

Incomplete evidence creates pressure:

- chase originals

- overtrust memory

- distrust memory

- argue replacement

A second sheet was opened.

Title:

Next

The reader wrote:

If loss is named and survived, make survival choose what not to chase.

The brush hovered over three words.

Annex.

Originals.

Kitahara.

Then moved to the blank space beneath them.

No need to attack all.

Let them decide which absence matters first.

The sheet was folded.

Placed under Absence.
