JJK: Behind The Strongest

A Field Site with Too Many Doors

Chapter 40

The field site looked harmless from the road.

That was the first reason no one trusted it.

It sat at the edge of a narrow Kyoto side street where the old residential district thinned into storehouses, workshops, and abandoned family properties too inconvenient to sell and too shameful to maintain properly. The building had once been a paper workshop, or perhaps a small household school, or perhaps both at different times, because old buildings learned new excuses the way people did. Its front gate sagged on one hinge. The outer wall had cracked in two places. Moss grew along the stone base. A narrow drainage channel ran beneath the east side, half covered by broken planks.

Three entrances were visible.

The front door.

A side service door.

A low storage hatch near the drainage path.

There was also a paper screen on the second floor that looked repaired too recently for the rest of the building.

Daigo stared at it from the street.

"No"

Moriyama stood beside him.

"You have not heard the assignment"

"I saw the building"

"That is not an argument"

"It has too many doors"

Oda, who had not come as a field supervisor and therefore had absolutely no reason to be present except that everyone had assumed she would appear if a building contained paper, looked at the property over her glasses.

"Correct"

Daigo turned.

"Why are you here?"

Oda held up a small stack of handling tags.

"Paper workshop"

"That is not an answer"

"It is the only one you receive"

Kitahara stood at the gate with her field case open, checking talisman thread, binding cloth, low-grade ward tags, emergency flare charms, and the expression of every adult present. She looked more alert than usual. Not tense. Worse. Prepared to distrust herself.

Haruto and Sayuri were not part of the field team, but they had come to the outer perimeter because the assignment touched threshold residue and nobody was pretending that Amana-adjacent doors stopped being relevant because a building looked like it wanted to fall down politely.

Moriyama had allowed their presence after naming them family-risk witnesses.

Oda had filed it as:

PARENTAL PERIMETER PRESENCE

Not shields.

Not decision-makers.

Useful if the building starts lying in Amana grammar.

Daigo had read the tag and declared that Oda should be banned from naming things before breakfast.

Oda had replied that he should become less nameable.

Now the six students stood outside the gate.

Rei.

Akiha.

Daigo.

Tomonari.

Miyo.

And Hayato Inoue, a quiet younger student added at the last moment because Moriyama wanted the field exercise to remain a class operation rather than a private room built around the incident-linked children.

That was the official reason.

The unofficial reason was that if every dangerous site contained only the same five children, the pattern would become too clean.

Hayato looked nervous.

He had reason.

Akiha watched him, then watched who else watched him. No one watched him much.

That was information too.

Moriyama gathered them before the gate.

"Assignment. Low-grade field review. The building was flagged after a maintenance worker reported repeated paper-scraping sounds from rooms without paper, light movement behind sealed screens, and a child’s voice asking whether class had started. No civilian injury. No confirmed curse attack. Residual readings are low but irregular. The site intersects an old drainage route and one obsolete household teaching mark"

Tomonari’s face tightened at teaching mark.

Miyo watched him notice.

Daigo muttered "Of course there is a teaching mark"

Moriyama continued "You will not exorcise unless instructed. You will identify doors, route pressure, observer shifts, residue patterns, and any object that invites interpretation before handling"

Daigo said "So everything"

Kitahara said "Possibly"

"That was not comfort"

"It was accuracy"

Oda handed Akiha a folded field note.

Akiha accepted it.

Oda handed Daigo another.

Daigo stared.

"No"

"Yes"

"I already have paper"

"This one is not yours"

"That keeps not helping"

He unfolded it.

FIELD SITE HANDLING NOTE

Do not let the building decide which door is important by making it noisy.

Do not let silence decide either.

If two doors ask to be held open, ask who benefits from one closing.

Do not clean the report into bravery.

Daigo read the final line twice.

"That is about me"

Oda said "Only if useful"

"Everything is about me if useful?"

"No. You are not that interesting"

Daigo looked relieved.

Then offended.

Akiha unfolded her note.

AUDIENCE / FIELD OBSERVER NOTE

Count:

- who watches the door

- who watches the person watching the door

- who changes when named as observer

- what your own presence changes

If you become useful, name how before the room names why.

She folded it again.

Not too carefully.

Tomonari received a route sheet from Moriyama.

FORM / ROUTE NOTE

Teaching marks may indicate:

- instruction room

- punishment room

- witness room

- storage room

- a room renamed after use

Do not accept the current label as the first truth.

He looked at it for a long time.

Then nodded.

Miyo received no paper.

She noticed.

Daigo noticed.

Akiha noticed.

Miyo looked at Moriyama.

"None for me?"

Moriyama held her gaze.

"You requested not to become archive-first"

Miyo blinked once.

Then nodded.

"Correct"

Moriyama said "Your instruction is spoken. If you observe a watcher, do not vanish after them unless the group knows the risk changed"

Miyo nodded.

"Accepted"

"Fully?"

Miyo considered.

"Accepted enough to act"

Moriyama’s mouth tightened.

"Better than beautiful lies"

Daigo whispered "Everyone is becoming worse"

Rei had received nothing either.

That was deliberate.

He knew it was.

No field note for the hidden center.

No paper for the boy most likely to read too much and then call it protection.

Moriyama looked at him last.

"Mikage"

"Yes, Moriyama-sensei"

"You identify residual threads. You do not interpret the whole building before other roles speak"

"Yes, Moriyama-sensei"

"If two doors pull, you name the pull. You do not choose alone"

Rei swallowed.

"Yes, Moriyama-sensei"

Sayuri watched from the perimeter.

Her face did not change.

Haruto’s did not either.

That made both worse.

The field team entered through the front gate.

Not the front door.

The gate.

Moriyama made them stop before the threshold.

"First count"

Akiha spoke.

"Visible doors: front, side service, storage hatch, repaired second-floor screen. Possible route: east drainage channel. Possible observation point: roofline opposite side alley. The building’s front presents itself as primary, but the recent repair on the second floor asks to be noticed"

Tomonari added "Old teaching mark may not align with current front entrance. If the site was renamed after use, the front door may be ceremonial rather than operational"

Daigo said "Storage hatch smells like a dare"

Miyo said "Second-floor screen is too neat"

Hayato looked between them.

"The front door is quiet"

Everyone looked at him.

He immediately looked regretful.

Moriyama said "Continue"

Hayato swallowed.

"I mean the reports said scraping sounds, voice, light movement. The front door has no fresh scratch marks. If something wants people to think of class, the front looks wrong"

Daigo stared at him.

Then said "Good"

Hayato looked alarmed.

Akiha almost smiled.

Almost.

Moriyama nodded.

"Record. Front door not accepted as first truth"

Kitahara placed a ward tag at the gatepost.

They did not enter through the front.

They walked around the building.

The side service door had scratches near the lower frame.

Not fresh.

Not old.

The storage hatch had a narrow line of cursed residue along the edge. Thin. Low-output. Not enough for a curse core. Enough to make Rei’s eyes want to follow.

He named it before following.

"Residue line on hatch. It pulls attention downward. I want to follow it"

Akiha looked at him.

"Risk?"

"Not immediate. Interpretive pull"

Daigo said "Do not crawl into the obvious bad hatch"

Miyo said "The hatch wants him low"

Tomonari said "Service door marks are at child height"

Hayato whispered "The voice asked whether class had started"

The building made a sound.

Soft.

From the second floor.

Paper scraping over wood.

Everyone stilled.

No one looked up first.

That was training.

Akiha counted.

Daigo’s eyes went to Rei first, then the sound.

Tomonari’s went to the side door, not the sound.

Miyo looked at the roofline across the alley.

Hayato looked up immediately, then realized and looked mortified.

Moriyama said "Good. You noticed your mistake. Keep breathing"

The scraping came again.

This time from inside the storage hatch.

Daigo whispered "No"

Kitahara’s hand moved toward the field case.

Moriyama lifted one finger.

Hold.

A child’s voice came from behind the front door.

"Class is starting"

Hayato went pale.

Rei felt three directions pull at once.

Front door.

Storage hatch.

Second-floor screen.

The residue line on the hatch brightened.

Not visibly.

Structurally.

The System did not open.

Good.

This was not a System moment.

This was a room moment.

Akiha said "The building wants split attention"

Tomonari added "The phrase class is starting attempts to classify entry as lateness or obedience"

Daigo gripped his wooden training blade.

"Storage hatch still smells like a dare"

Miyo said "Roofline moved"

Everyone froze.

Moriyama’s eyes did not leave the building.

"Describe"

Miyo’s gaze stayed across the alley.

"Loose tile shifted on opposite roof. No visible person. Could be animal. Timing is wrong"

Kitahara swore softly.

Oda, at the perimeter, wrote something.

The voice came again.

"You will be late"

A low thump followed from the storage hatch.

Then a small burst of cursed energy from the second-floor screen.

Three doors.

Three calls.

Adult triage had a shape now.

Moriyama said "No one enters"

The building creaked.

The side service door opened inward by one finger’s width.

No hand.

No wind.

Akiha spoke before anyone else.

"If two doors ask to be held open, ask who benefits from one closing"

Daigo looked at Oda’s note in his hand.

"There are more than two"

Tomonari said "Then the choice pressure is the point"

Rei felt the threads.

Too many.

Low grade. Weak. Not weak enough.

The curse was not strong. It was distributed through door-use residue, old instruction expectation, and something like a childish fear of being late. It wanted entry to become agreement. It wanted someone to decide which route mattered most. Once one route was chosen, the other doors would become neglected.

Neglected doors were sometimes the real ones.

He said "The curse is not at one door"

Moriyama looked at him.

He kept going.

"It is using the doors as attention valves. If we choose one as primary, the others change. I cannot tell which becomes dangerous after choice"

Support the author by searching for the original publication of this novel.

Daigo muttered "I hate this building"

Hayato said softly "The front voice sounds scared"

That was new.

Everyone looked at him.

Hayato flinched but continued.

"It is not only calling us late. It sounds like it thinks it will be punished if class starts wrong"

Tomonari’s face tightened.

"Punishment room possibility"

Akiha looked at the side door.

"The building may be using care as pressure"

Miyo said "Or Hayato as the care route"

Hayato went paler.

Moriyama said "Hayato, step back two paces"

He did.

The front voice whimpered.

"Please"

Hayato’s hands clenched.

Rei felt himself move.

Not physically.

Inside.

The protective control rose so fast it almost felt like instinct.

Hayato was not part of the core group. He had no ugly paper. No handling note. No practiced language for doors. He was the easiest person for the building to make into a child instead of a student.

Rei wanted to step between him and the front door.

He said it aloud.

"I want to step between Hayato and the front door"

Daigo’s eyes snapped to him.

Akiha said "Thank you for naming it"

Moriyama said "Do not yet"

Rei nodded.

The storage hatch thumped again.

Louder.

Miyo’s gaze remained on the roofline.

"The tile moved again"

Kitahara said "External watcher or curse reflection?"

"Unknown"

Akiha said "If we move because of the roofline, the building learns roofline moves us"

Miyo nodded.

"If we ignore it, watcher may learn we discount external observation during field pressure"

Daigo said "There are too many correct bad answers"

Tomonari stepped closer to the service door.

Not touching.

"The side door opened after the voice. It may be offering an adult route"

Moriyama’s eyes sharpened.

"Explain"

"Front door calls children. Hatch pulls residual attention. Second-floor screen presents recent repair. Side door opens as if for staff"

Kitahara said "Adult entrance"

Tomonari nodded.

"If an adult takes it to control the site, the building separates adult authority from student pressure"

Rei felt the shape.

Adult triage.

Choose the children or the door.

Choose the watcher or the voice.

Choose Akiha or Miyo.

Choose Rei or Hayato.

Make good adults close doors.

Moriyama looked at Kitahara.

Kitahara looked back.

For one moment, they almost did it.

Kitahara toward side door.

Moriyama holding children.

Reasonable.

Efficient.

Wrong help waiting at the edge.

Akiha said "Protection must name what it protects us from before taking away a way to see"

Moriyama stopped.

Kitahara did too.

Oda wrote from the perimeter without looking up.

"Correct"

Daigo whispered "She can hear through walls"

Miyo said "We are outside"

"Not the point"

Moriyama’s face hardened.

"New plan. No adult enters alone. No student enters. We test response with named non-entry"

She stepped toward the side service door, stopped outside the threshold, and spoke clearly.

"We acknowledge the open staff route. We do not accept it as priority"

The service door slammed shut.

Hayato gasped.

The front voice cried.

The hatch went silent.

The second-floor screen lit from behind with a pale, weak glow.

Akiha said "It disliked refused authority more than ignored child voice"

Tomonari nodded.

"Staff route was pressure lever"

Miyo said "Roofline still"

Daigo said "Hatch quiet is suspicious"

Rei nodded.

"The hatch is waiting"

Moriyama looked at the group.

"Mikage. Residue direction now"

Rei focused.

Carefully.

Not the whole building.

Just direction.

"The residue line from hatch connects beneath the floor to the front threshold. The second floor is linked differently. Not same thread. Maybe observer point or later room"

Tomonari asked "Teaching mark location?"

Rei closed his eyes halfway.

"Not front. Not side. Under the central room. Maybe former instruction space"

Akiha said "Then the doors are not entrances. They are roles"

Daigo groaned.

"Of course the doors have jobs"

Miyo said "Front child. Side staff. Hatch mistake. Second floor watcher"

Silence followed.

That was it.

Maybe not fully.

Enough.

Hayato whispered "Hatch mistake?"

Miyo looked at him.

"Low. Hidden. Something crawls there if it thinks it caused the problem"

Hayato swallowed.

The hatch thumped once.

Softly.

Like agreement.

Daigo’s face changed.

"Absolutely not"

The hatch thumped again.

Rei felt the pull shift.

Not toward him.

Toward Hayato.

Because Hayato had heard the scared voice and now the hatch offered him guilt.

Class starting wrong.

Punishment.

Mistake.

A child crawling into the low door because the high door was crying.

Rei stepped sideways.

Not in front of Hayato.

Beside him.

The difference mattered.

"Hayato"

Hayato looked at him.

Rei kept his voice steady.

"The building is offering you responsibility for a mistake you did not make"

Hayato’s eyes widened.

The front voice sobbed.

The hatch rattled.

Daigo said "Do not accept random building guilt. It is almost always stolen"

Hayato gave a strained, frightened laugh.

Then nodded.

"I do not accept responsibility for the class starting wrong"

The front voice cut off.

Instantly.

The silence rang.

Akiha turned to Hayato.

"Good"

Hayato looked like he might faint because too many important people had approved him in one morning.

Miyo’s gaze snapped to the roofline.

"Movement"

Kitahara moved this time.

Not toward the side door.

Toward the alley sightline.

"Moriyama"

"Go"

Kitahara did not go alone.

She pointed at Miyo.

"With me. Visible route. You name if pursuit becomes the trap"

Miyo blinked.

Then nodded.

"Accepted"

Akiha’s head turned.

For one second, the room threatened to split.

Miyo to roofline.

Akiha with field group.

The exact pressure from the reader’s map.

Two girls. One external watcher. One internal observer. Rei felt the impulse to choose which mattered.

He said "This is the split"

Moriyama said "Named"

Akiha took one breath.

"Miyo goes with Kitahara. I remain here and count what changes when she leaves"

Miyo looked at Akiha.

Then moved to Kitahara’s side.

Not vanishing.

Walking.

Visible.

That was new.

They entered the alley together.

The building responded immediately.

Second-floor screen slid open.

No figure.

Only paper strips hanging inside, hundreds of them, thin and pale, fluttering without wind. Each strip had a child’s practice character written on it.

Most were wrong.

Some had been corrected so hard the paper had torn.

The front door whispered.

"Again"

Daigo’s hands tightened.

Tomonari went pale.

"This was a punishment room"

Akiha said "Or a correction room"

Rei looked at the strips.

Do not interpret all.

He focused on residual thread.

"The corrections carry more residue than the errors"

Moriyama’s jaw tightened.

"The punishment mattered more than learning"

Oda’s voice from the perimeter was very quiet.

"Common educational disease"

Daigo looked at the open screen.

"If someone offers a fight that makes refusal look like cowardice, ask who chose the audience before accepting"

He looked down.

"Wrong line. Still useful"

Akiha said "If a private word appears in a public fight, stop before answering the insult"

Tomonari said "If a room tries to name one of us, say whose name it is using before answering"

Rei looked at Hayato.

"What name is it using?"

Hayato swallowed.

"The bad student"

The strips fluttered.

The front door creaked.

Hayato’s voice shook, but held.

"It is using the bad student"

Tomonari said "Do you accept that name?"

Hayato stared at him.

Then at the building.

"No"

The screen slammed shut.

Every door shook at once.

Not strong.

Angry.

The curse finally showed itself.

It poured from the gaps beneath the front door and hatch like damp paper pulp, gray-white and fibrous, no taller than a child, with too many thin arms and a face made of correction marks. Its mouth opened and a dozen voices whispered at once.

"Again"

"Wrong"

"Late"

"Bad"

"Again"

Hayato stumbled back.

Daigo stepped forward.

Moriyama snapped "Hold"

Daigo stopped.

Barely.

Akiha looked at him.

He muttered "I held"

"Good"

"Do not"

Rei watched the curse.

Low grade.

Maybe Grade 4, perhaps semi-Grade 3 because of the threshold residue and environmental conditions. Not physically dangerous if handled properly. Very dangerous if someone tried to exorcise the guilt instead of the curse.

The curse pointed one paper arm at Hayato.

"Again"

Hayato shook.

Daigo said "No"

The curse turned toward him.

"Wrong"

Daigo grinned.

"Yes"

It lunged.

Moriyama almost moved.

Did not.

Daigo met it with the flat of his chipped training blade reinforced with cursed energy, not cutting, shoving its paper body sideways into the gravel. Fibers tore. The curse shrieked, but not in pain. In correction.

"Bad"

Daigo snarled "Better"

The curse reformed.

Rei saw the residue lines shift toward Daigo now.

Pride route.

Wrong route.

He named it.

"It is trying to make Daigo become the bad student instead"

Daigo laughed.

"Too late. I am already many bad things"

Akiha said "Do not give it a useful category"

"Fine"

Tomonari moved beside Hayato.

Not protectively in front.

Beside.

"Hayato. The name is not yours. Do not argue with it. Refuse role. Not content"

Hayato nodded shakily.

"I refuse the bad student role"

The curse spasmed.

Akiha looked at the building.

"When he refused, the front door weakened"

Rei said "Hatch residue still active"

Miyo’s voice came from the alley.

"Roofline was a hanging charm"

Everyone turned.

Miyo returned with Kitahara. Kitahara carried a small paper charm in tongs. It had been tied beneath a loose roof tile, positioned to move when field pressure pulsed. Not a person. A watcher-simulation.

Miyo’s face was unreadable.

"It was designed to make a watcher route without requiring a watcher"

Akiha’s eyes sharpened.

"So if you chased, they learned how we chase"

Miyo nodded.

"Kitahara stopped before I did"

Kitahara looked uncomfortable.

"Do not sound surprised"

Miyo said "I am documenting"

"That is worse"

The curse lunged again.

This time toward the gap between Akiha and Miyo.

Not Hayato.

Not Daigo.

Between the two observers.

A thin paper arm split into two.

One reaching toward Akiha’s field note.

One toward Miyo’s empty hands.

Rei moved.

Or began to.

He stopped himself so hard his muscles hurt.

"Pull between Akiha and Miyo"

Akiha stepped back.

Miyo stepped sideways.

Not away from each other.

At angles that kept the gap visible.

Akiha said "It wants one of us to become the correct observer"

Miyo said "And the other to become the missed one"

Daigo looked at Rei.

"Do not choose"

Rei nodded.

"I know"

He did not choose.

He did something harder.

He described.

"The curse is sustained by correction marks on second-floor strips and responsibility routes through doors. Exorcism target is not the main body. It is the correction residue inside the room"

Tomonari looked at the building.

"Then attacking the body only relocates the role"

Moriyama said "Operational plan"

Akiha answered first.

"Hayato refuses bad student role and remains outside"

Tomonari said "Daigo keeps the body occupied without accepting wrong category"

Daigo said "I hit paper badly but usefully"

Miyo said "I watch artificial watcher route and do not chase if it moves"

Akiha said "I count door-response when roles are refused"

Rei said "I trace correction residue to anchor"

Moriyama looked at him.

"And you do not enter alone"

Rei nodded.

"I do not enter alone"

Kitahara said "Who enters?"

Silence.

Not long.

Tomonari said "I should"

Daigo said "No"

Tomonari looked at him.

"The teaching mark grammar is relevant"

Daigo scowled.

"That does not mean you crawl into the punishment room"

Tomonari’s hands folded.

"I was not planning to crawl"

Miyo said "Side staff route is closed but not gone"

Akiha said "The building punishes students. Staff route controls the correction. If Tomonari enters as formal interpreter, it may classify him as staff or student depending on wording"

Tomonari nodded.

"Then I should not enter as interpreter"

Rei said "We do not need to enter yet"

Everyone looked at him.

He looked at the second-floor screen.

"The correction strips are exposed when the screen opens. The curse opened it when Hayato refused. It may open again if the role refusal threatens the pattern"

Moriyama said "So"

"So we make it open without entering"

Daigo grinned.

"I can be wrong loudly"

Akiha said "No"

His face fell.

"Why?"

"Because it already wants you as wrong"

Hayato, still pale, said "I can refuse again"

Tomonari looked at him.

"Can you?"

Hayato swallowed.

Then nodded.

"Yes"

Moriyama’s gaze assessed him.

Not gently.

Properly.

"Your role?"

Hayato’s voice trembled.

"I am the student it tried to name as bad. I refuse the role outside the door. I do not approach the hatch"

Moriyama nodded.

"Proceed"

Hayato faced the building.

The paper curse hissed.

Daigo held it back with another flat strike, grimacing as fibrous arms wrapped around the blade and tried to pull.

Hayato said "I refuse the bad student role"

The front door cracked.

Not enough.

Hayato closed his eyes.

"I refuse responsibility for the class starting wrong"

The second-floor screen shuddered.

Akiha said "More"

Hayato opened his eyes.

"I refuse to crawl into the mistake door"

The storage hatch slammed open.

Empty darkness below.

Rei felt the hatch pull like a throat.

Daigo cursed.

Tomonari said "Good refusal"

Hayato almost laughed again.

Then said, stronger "I refuse to be corrected by a room that will not name what I did"

The second-floor screen flew open.

Paper strips burst outward.

Moriyama moved.

Kitahara too.

Oda, from the perimeter, threw a packet of blank tags into the air with shocking force for an archivist.

The tags spread across the yard like white leaves.

Rei did not enter the building.

He reached with Residual Threading.

Publicly.

Believably.

Following lines of correction residue as they snapped from strip to strip, finding the densest mark. Not the cleanest. The most repeated. The one corrected so many times it had become the center of the curse’s memory.

A torn practice sheet near the middle of the second-floor room.

One character written by a child.

Wrong.

Corrected.

Wrong again.

Corrected harder.

The paper had torn through the center.

Rei pointed.

"Third row from left. Torn sheet. Central correction anchor"

Akiha counted the strips.

"Confirmed by movement. The other strips turn toward it"

Miyo said "Artificial roofline charm also pulsed toward that window"

Tomonari said "Anchor is not the error. It is the correction"

Daigo laughed sharply while wrestling the curse back.

"Of course the correction is the problem"

Moriyama moved then.

Not into the side door.

Not as staff.

She crossed the yard, stopped outside the front threshold, and used the butt of her pointer to strike a ward tag against the lintel.

"I reject this instruction"

The building screamed.

Kitahara threw a binding cloth through the open second-floor screen, not to bind the curse body, but to pin the torn sheet to the wall. Oda’s blank tags caught around it, each one unmarked, refusing the old correction marks a surface to continue onto.

Rei reinforced the residual thread line enough to keep the anchor visible.

Not enough to show anything strange.

Kusakabe control.

Nanami steadiness.

No more.

Pain flared behind his eyes anyway because restraint under pressure cost more than action sometimes.

Akiha saw his breathing change.

"Rei. Cost"

He answered.

"Eye strain. Thread hold. Stable"

Daigo barked "No hero nonsense"

"I know"

Miyo watched him for half a breath, then looked away deliberately.

Reportable?

Not now.

The torn sheet blackened at the edges.

The curse body collapsed inward.

Daigo stepped back before it could pull his blade down with it.

Hayato kept repeating, voice shaking but steady enough:

"I refuse the role"

"I refuse the role"

"I refuse the role"

The curse shrank.

Not dramatically.

No explosion.

No cleansing light.

It folded like wet paper left too long in the sun, then dissolved into gray residue that smelled faintly of ink, mildew, and old fear.

The doors stopped moving.

The building did not become safe.

That was fine.

Safe was too much to ask from a place that had once taught children that correction mattered more than learning.

Moriyama lowered her pointer.

"Exorcism complete"

Hayato sat down immediately.

Daigo sat beside him.

Not gracefully.

"You did not crawl into the bad hatch"

Hayato looked at him.

"No"

"Good"

Hayato laughed.

This time, less frightened.

"Everyone keeps saying that"

Daigo looked deeply tired.

"Yes. It is a disease"

Akiha wrote.

Miyo watched.

Tomonari inspected the teaching mark from a distance.

Rei let the residual threads go and tried not to look like his head hurt.

Akiha looked at him.

He said before she could ask "Headache. No hidden injury. I am not fine but functional"

Akiha nodded.

"Acceptable"

Daigo looked at him.

"You stole that from your mother"

"She has good lines"

"Terrifying lines"

"Yes"

Kitahara checked the hatch first.

Not alone.

Miyo stood beside her.

The hatch led to a shallow crawlspace beneath the central room. No curse core. No child remains. No hidden object. Only old practice boards, damp paper bundles, and one route marker carved into the underside of a support beam.

Tomonari read the copied sketch Kitahara made.

"Not Kamo"

Sayuri, still at the perimeter, had gone very still.

Rei noticed.

So did Akiha.

Tomonari turned the sketch slightly.

"Amana-adjacent?"

Sayuri answered from beyond the gate.

"No"

Oda looked at her.

Sayuri’s face was cold.

"It imitates Amana-adjacent teaching marks badly"

Haruto asked "Badly for whom?"

Sayuri looked at the building.

"Badly for me. Well enough for a clerk. Well enough for a cautious adult. Well enough to make us think the wrong old door was involved"

Daigo said "False door again"

Oda wrote.

"No" Akiha said

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the building.

"False label. Real pressure"

Miyo nodded.

"The building did not need Amana grammar. It needed us to wonder whether it had it"

Rei looked at the crawlspace.

The field site had not been about the curse.

Not fully.

The curse was real.

The fear was real.

The correction residue was real.

Hayato’s role pressure had been real.

But the Amana-adjacent mark was a lure made of almost.

A controlled danger with a false route.

Not meant to kill them.

Meant to make adults choose between children.

Meant to see whether Rei would choose.

Meant to see whether Akiha and Miyo could stand in different doors without one becoming abandoned.

Meant to see whether the surrounding structure could enter a field site and remain a structure.

Tomonari said "Report language should not say Amana mark"

Sayuri nodded.

"It should say imitation mark resembling Amana-adjacent teaching notation to non-specialist review"

Daigo stared.

"That is horrible"

Tomonari said "It is necessary"

"Still horrible"

Oda looked at the building.

"Good horrible"

Daigo covered his face.

The post-site review took place outside the gate, before anyone left.

Moriyama insisted.

"If we wait until the archive, the field becomes memory. Memory cleans itself when tired"

Oda looked offended that memory dared compete with records.

The review was ugly.

Therefore useful.

Hayato spoke first because the building had used him and he had refused.

"I heard the front voice as scared. I wanted to help. Then the hatch made me feel like it was my fault. Rei named that it was offering responsibility for a mistake I did not make. Tomonari said refuse role, not content. I refused bad student role. That opened the screen"

Moriyama wrote it down.

Not as victim statement.

As operational action.

Daigo spoke next.

"I wanted to hit the paper curse like it was insulting me. It tried to call me wrong. I gave it too much at first. Then I mostly hit it without accepting the name"

Oda said "Mostly is accurate"

Daigo looked at her.

"I am too tired"

Akiha spoke.

"The site used multiple doors to create competing roles. Front child. Side staff. Hatch mistake. Second-floor watcher. The roofline charm simulated external observation. When Miyo and Kitahara moved visibly, the building changed pressure toward the gap between Miyo and me"

Miyo said "The charm was not a watcher, but it made us spend watcher-behavior"

Tomonari said "The old mark was imitation, not source. The teaching pressure was real. The Amana implication was false or opportunistic"

Rei said "The anchor was correction residue, not error residue. The curse maintained itself through repeated correction marks"

Kitahara added "Adults almost split by taking staff route. We stopped after Akiha invoked protection language"

Moriyama wrote that too.

No one liked it.

Good.

Oda created the first field-site tag:

FIELD SITE WITH TOO MANY DOORS

Real curse.

False route.

Pressure target: choice under protection.

Daigo read it.

"That sounds like a chapter title"

No one understood.

Rei almost did.

Then decided not to.

The final report category was agreed before departure:

Operational conclusion:

The site presented a low-grade curse sustained by punitive correction residue.

The environment contained multiple role-doors designed to distribute responsibility, authority, guilt, and observation across separate entrances.

The team avoided accepting the site’s forced priority structure.

Exorcism succeeded after role refusal, anchor identification, and non-entry containment.

Warning:

The imitation Amana-adjacent mark appears designed to affect interpretation rather than function as the source.

Hayato read the line about role refusal.

Then looked at Rei.

"Was I useful?"

Everyone froze.

The question was innocent.

That made it dangerous.

Useful children.

Wrong kind of help.

Correction rooms.

Adults who wanted to keep useful children.

Rei did not answer first.

Good.

Daigo answered.

"You refused the building’s stupid name. That mattered"

Hayato blinked.

Akiha added "Useful is not the first word"

Tomonari said "You acted"

Miyo said "You were frightened and still named refusal"

Moriyama said "That is enough for the report"

Hayato looked overwhelmed.

Kitahara placed one hand on his shoulder.

Lightly.

"Also, yes. But do not let useful be the only word you keep"

Hayato nodded.

Rei breathed out.

Good adults could learn.

Sometimes.

The building was sealed after the exorcism.

Not cleansed fully.

Sealed for later review.

No one opened the crawlspace further.

No one entered the second-floor correction room before Oda placed tags on every paper strip visible through the screen:

DO NOT REMOVE UNTIL THE ROOM STOPS TEACHING

Daigo looked at the tag.

"That is creepy"

Oda said "So is the room"

"Fair"

On the walk back, Miyo fell into step beside Akiha.

Not behind.

Not in a corner.

Beside.

Akiha noticed.

Miyo said "The building tried to make one of us the missed watcher"

"Yes"

"It failed because you named the split"

"And because you came back visibly"

Miyo looked ahead.

"Kitahara told me to"

"You agreed"

"Partly"

Akiha almost smiled.

"Accepted enough to act"

Miyo nodded.

"That may be a problem"

"Why?"

"If I become visible when needed, people will learn when need exists"

Akiha considered.

"Then sometimes become visible when need does not exist"

Miyo looked at her.

"False room"

"Visible room"

"Bad room"

"Mine"

Miyo was silent.

Then said "Good"

Akiha sighed.

"There it is again"

From behind them, Daigo said "Stop bonding through terrible words"

Miyo looked back.

"We are not bonding"

Akiha said "Unclear"

Daigo groaned.

Tomonari said "Increasingly unclear"

Rei laughed quietly.

Hayato looked between them like he had survived a curse only to witness a stranger field phenomenon.

Moriyama, walking ahead, did not turn.

"Recover while moving. Field days are not permission to become stupid"

Daigo whispered "Too late"

Kitahara said "I heard that"

"Everyone hears everything"

Miyo said "No"

They all looked at her.

She looked back.

"That is why this is difficult"

No one had an answer.

Good.

That evening, the letter to Satoru was written in stages.

Hayato did not contribute because the letter was about the incident-linked structure, not because his role did not matter. That distinction was written into the report first.

Rei drafted.

Akiha corrected.

Daigo objected.

Tomonari ruined one sentence with accuracy.

Miyo made one line worse and better at the same time.

Satoru,

Field site today.

Low-grade curse in an abandoned paper workshop / teaching room.

Too many doors.

Front child voice. Side staff route. Storage hatch mistake route. Second-floor watcher route. Artificial roofline charm.

It tried to make us split attention and make adults choose which child to protect first.

We named the roles before entering.

We did not enter.

Hayato refused the bad student role.

Daigo occupied the curse without accepting the wrong category.

Akiha counted the split.

Miyo went visibly with Kitahara to check the roofline charm and came back visibly.

Tomonari identified teaching-room grammar.

Rei traced the correction residue anchor without entering alone.

Moriyama-sensei rejected the instruction at the front threshold.

Kitahara-san pinned the anchor.

Oda-san tagged everything, as expected.

The curse was real.

The Amana-looking mark was likely imitation.

False route. Real pressure.

Rei

Daigo added:

P.S. The building had too many doors and I was right to hate it.

Akiha added:

P.P.S. The room tried to make one observer missed and one observer correct. It failed because the split was named.

Tomonari added:

P.P.P.S. Correction residue, not error residue, sustained the curse. This distinction matters.

Miyo added after staring at the page for several seconds:

P.P.P.P.S. Corners report differently.

Everyone read that line.

Daigo said "I hate that I understand it"

Miyo said "Good"

Rei added the final note.

P.P.P.P.P.S. The vow should not pull. This was surrounding structure.

Satoru’s reply came five days later.

It was short.

That worried everyone.

Rei, Akiha, Daigo, Tomonari, Miyo,

Too many doors is a bad building and a good warning.

False route. Real pressure.

Correction residue, not error residue, is disgusting and important.

Corners reporting differently is also disgusting and important.

Gojo side did not carry this site assignment as far as I can see.

That means either Kyoto route, field-site route, or a route I cannot see from here.

Vow did not pull.

Pride did not pull.

Annoyance pulled continuously.

Satoru

P.S. Tell Hayato refusing a role is harder than hitting a curse.

P.P.S. Do not tell him I said it kindly.

P.P.P.S. Oda tagging everything is becoming predictable. This may be useful or dangerous.

P.P.P.P.S. Do not let the next report make the building smarter than the people.

Daigo read the postscript about kindness and said "He is getting worse"

Akiha read the last line twice.

Tomonari copied it.

Miyo said "He dislikes reports that become doors"

Rei nodded.

"Yes"

Oda, reading over no one’s shoulder because she had somehow been given a copy before the group assembled, said "He is less slow"

Daigo said "That is almost praise"

"Do not clean it"

The System opened that night.

Rei sat at his desk, field report copied beside his notebook, head still faintly aching from the thread hold. He expected the message and resented that expectation.

[Field Site With Too Many Doors processed]

Threat:

low-grade curse sustained by punitive correction residue

Environmental vectors:

- child voice / lateness role

- staff door / authority route

- storage hatch / mistake-guilt route

- second-floor screen / watcher route

- artificial roofline charm / observer simulation

- imitation Amana-adjacent mark / false interpretation route

Outcome:

Forced priority structure refused.

No solo entry.

No adult isolation route accepted.

Role refusal succeeded.

Anchor identified without core exposure.

Exorcism completed.

A second message appeared.

[Surrounding Structure update]

Cohort field function confirmed:

- Suda Akiha: audience and split detection

- Zenin Daigo: pressure occupation without category acceptance

- Kamo Tomonari: formal-role and teaching-mark interpretation

- Miyo: counter-observation and artificial watcher recognition

- Mikage Rei: residue tracing / anchor identification under shared constraint

Additional participant:

Hayato Inoue — role refusal under pressure

Rei read Hayato’s line twice.

Good.

Useful was not the first word.

The System continued.

[New analytical principle registered]

A trap may use real danger to make the response pattern the true harvest.

Warning:

The field site did not need to defeat the group.

It needed to learn which doors the group refuses to enter.

No reward.

Again.

Good.

Then, after a pause:

[No extraction issued]

Current progress:

field cohesion / non-entry containment / role refusal / split-pressure resistance

Continue surviving consequence.

Rei closed the notebook.

Then reopened it.

He wrote:

Today we did not open the wrong door.

This is not the same as winning.

The building learned which doors we refused.

We learned that refusing together is possible in the field.

Both remain true.

He stamped it.

Plain.

The mark came out strong.

That worried him a little.

Far away, the unknown reader received the field report later than usual and less completely than desired.

The delay was irritating.

The incompleteness was interesting.

The report contained enough:

Too many doors.

Role refusal.

False route. Real pressure.

Akiha split detection.

Miyo artificial watcher recognition.

Daigo pressure occupation.

Tomonari teaching-mark interpretation.

Rei anchor identification without entry.

Hayato refusal.

Moriyama rejecting instruction.

Kitahara pinning anchor.

Oda tagging everything.

The gloved hand arranged the pages across the table.

The field map was brought out again.

Marked.

Adjusted.

The reader paused at one line.

The field site did not need to defeat the group.

It needed to learn which doors the group refuses to enter.

That line was not in the field report.

The reader did not have it.

But if the reader had, perhaps the pause would have been longer.

Instead, the brush moved over a clean sheet.

Field pressure failed to split them.

However:

- child-guilt route was refused after external naming

- observer split was recognized

- false Amana route did not hold

- adult staff route was rejected

- hidden center did not choose alone

The group now functions in field conditions.

The brush stopped.

A second line followed.

Next test should not ask which door they open.

It should remove the person who names doors.

The reader looked at the list.

Akiha.

Miyo.

Tomonari.

Oda.

Moriyama.

Then, after a longer pause, circled none of them.

Instead, a new word was written at the margin.

Report.

The next door would not be in a building.

It would be in the way the building was described after everyone left.
