Chapter 52: Realizations and Defeats
Frenley waited; his body lay low to the floor. His eyes scanned the route he must take to reach the grain silo. He looked at the guards who had a field of vision along the route. Arches and mixed groups of guards. The groups move around, relieving soldiers from their posts. Or just doing normal preset patrols. Frenley calculates his mind and soul points.
Since he deactivated his winter rune, his soul went down by one point. Leaving him with a maximum of nine and a current soul of six. His mind is at one point. Frenley tried to think of what to do; he didn't want to waste the mana potion. Frenley's brown eyes danced all around, taking everything in as he formulated a plan in his mind.
Soon, a devilish smile spread across his face. He slowly stood up, breathing in and then breathing out. He let the cold air calm his hardened nerves. A bead of sweat ran down the side of his face, his eyes focused. Frenley teleports forward as far as he can. He appeared in his new position before his feet touched the ground. He went invisible. The moment his feet touched the ground, a wave of air came from him. It picked up dust and dirt alike.
Arches shot arrows at his position, and a guard group came to investigate. Frenley ran with all of his might. He worked his leg muscles to their limits. He rushed to the grain silo with a single-minded goal, counting the seconds down of his invisibility. As he reached the door of the grain silo with one second remaining, he drank his mana potion. He applied his invisibility again as he opened the door of the grain silo.
The inside was full of grain, some of it spilling into the courtyard. A heavy cloud of grain dust slowly rose. Frenley ran away as fast as he could and then turned around. Shotting a season bolt at the open grain silo. The bolt of magic flew to the grain silo, disappearing into the grain dust cloud. Once inside, it hit the wall, causing a small explosion that soon ignited the dust.
In less than a second, the grain silo went up in flames with a large explosion. Sending shrapnel from the stone wall and wood ceiling flying. Some of the pieces of wood had fire on them. As they landed on wooden carts or wooden roofs, they caught on fire as well. Soon the inside of the courtyard was an inferno as houses went up in flame.
The guards scream orders at each other as they all rush to get water to fight the fire. Frenley hides behind a house, one that thankfully has not caught on fire yet. He takes a peek from behind the building, trying to see if he can see his lovers. As he focused his sight on the hole he came through. He saw the signs of battle as the remaining three guards died one after another. The one archer on the wall was dead as his head got pierced by a magic ball.
The girls came into the courtyard, rushing to hide in a building. Frenley noticed the bright silver hair of Risa poke from the side of the building. Her eyes seemed to find him in no time, as she pointed to the main gate leading into the castle proper. He showed her a thumbs up, the silver-haired kitsune doing the same before she summoned her two wolves.
The wolves rushed to the large group of soldiers trying to put out the fire. Adding to the chaos with the soft symphony of death. More shouts entered Frenley's pointy ears as he rushed towards the main gate. He used the cover of shadows to hide himself as much as he could. His heart beat against his chest as he arrived at the final stretch. The gate was not protected at all, and with a final look to make sure no one was looking in that direction. He rushed forward.
Jumping over the wall of the stairs and rushed up the steps. He tackled the wooden doors wide open. Letting them hit the black walls of the castle with a large bang. But not loud enough to cut through the cacophony of shouts, deaths, battle, and a hungry fire.
Soon, two figures entered the room with him. He didn't even need to check who they were. For Frenley had their bodies memorized in fine lewd detail. Frenley pushed the doors closed, right as a soldier noticed him and the girls. The soldier tried to get someone's attention as the doors fully closed.
“Barricade it! Someone saw us!” Frenley said, rushing to grab a wooden crate.
“Yes, sir!” The girls said at the same time as they moved things.
The trio blocked the door with large crates of wood and marble statues that took all of Mia’s strength. The group breathed a sigh of relief as the sounds of the soldiers trying to open the door to no avail reached their ears. Frenley wiped the sweat from his brow, his armor clinging to his body. The girls weren't looking any better. Mia was sitting down, her chest armor lying on the ground. Her undershirt stuck to her body like a body suit. Highlighting her curves, the shirt was black and, sadly, not see-through.
Risa was in the best position of them; her robes were easy to breathe in. Her silver hair stuck to her face, her mouth open as she let out puffs of hot breath.
“Fuck me... my legs are killing me!”
Mia groaned as she spread her legs, grinding her teeth through the soreness of her muscles. Frenley and Risa felt the same, but before any of them could say anything. A large sound came from the door, some of their barricade moving a bit.
“FUCK! They're gonna get through that in a matter of minutes, alright girls, let's get out of here.” Frenley said as he walked toward Mia and helped her get her upper armor back on. As the man helped her, he activated his winter rune once more.
Risa walked ahead of them, trying to reach the end of the room. Once Mia's armor was back on, she and Frenley went after Risa. Once the trio got together, they quickened their steps, ignoring the increasing strength of each strike the wooden doors received. As they reached the end of the room, they stopped. To their left and right were staircases.
“Ah... let's go right!” Risa said as she led the group to the right stairs.
The group climbed the stairs, soon coming to a small room with three guards sitting around eating. The guards looked at the trio with open mouths. But before they could even talk, Mia and Frenley cut the lives out of their bodies. The duo cleaned their bloody swords as they got into position against the door leading out of the room.
They all shared a look, weapons at the ready as Mia opened the door. What greeted them was a large art room. A room filled to the brim with art pieces of all types. Across from them was an open balcony. The group entered the room to get a better look at it.
“There seems to be a hallway over there.” Risa's words caught Frenley and Mia’s attention.
“Good spotting, sweetheart,” Mia said with a soft smile.
The group started to walk toward the end hallway. Frenley looked at the paintings and marble statues. As they walked, his eyes landed on a particular painting. It depicted a figure splitting apart: one half female, the other male. Behind the figure was a depiction of a large tree, similar to the one his first magic focus depicted. On the horizon of the picture, both the sun and moon were rising together.
Frenley's silver eyes landed on the golden plaque beneath the picture. The words “The First Virtue" were engraved into it.
“Frenley?”
Mia’s voice brought the man back to the present.
“Sorry, coming.”
Frenley said as he started to walk towards the girls. But as he did, a phrase came to mind, one Ailice said in passing. Slowly growing louder and louder in his mind, till he could no longer hold back from speaking it as well.
“The first sin...”
“The what?” Mia asked, tilting her head to the side.
Frenley started to piece things together, at a rather rapid pace. He rested his hand on a nearby marble statue. His eyes darted from place to place. As pieces slowly clicked into place.
“Our worlds were once united..”
The girls looked at Frenley with concern in their eyes as they walked to him.
“The first sin separated the worlds. The magical to one side and the mundane on the other. But now our worlds are slowly merging again, the sun being the catalyst of this.”
“Frenley, what are you talking about, babe?” Risa said as she and Mia slowly got closer to him. For they noticed the weird fire in his eyes.
Frenley looked at them as he spoke.
“Ailice said to me when I was having my panic attack. That Risa and I will get our fantastical features once the first sin is corrected!” He pointed to the painting. “That painting, it's called The First Virtue! The First Sin is The First Virtue!”
The girls stopped in their tracks as they looked at Frenley with a hint of fear.
“If if… our words were once together! They got separated; that will explain the similarities between cultures' fantasy creatures! It it-”
‘GIRLS KNOCK HIM OUT BEFORE THE SUN TAKES HIM!’
Ailice spoke in all of their minds. Frenley looked at the girls with wide eyes, but he didn't have time to react as Mia punched him in the face. Knocking him out cold as his head hit the floor.
A sharp intake of cold air entered his lungs. Frenley's eyes opened up as he sat up. He groans softly as he touches the back of his head, touching a wet spot as a metallic odor hits his nose.
“What happened...?” Frenley's voice was weak as it left his lips.
“Love, mi amor, are you back with us?” Mia said, getting on her knees in front of him.
“Babe, are you okay? What do you remember?” Risa asked as she patted his shoulder, his eyes slightly misty.
“Um..I think? I remember looking at a painting. Mia called for me, I walked, and then I kept remembering this one phrase Ailice said in passing…”
“Okay.. um, maybe Ailice can explain it better than us. Ailice, if you could?” Mia said, looking up, like that would help her communicate better with the female voice in their heads.
‘Curiosity invites the sun; y'all all ready know that the sun is the source of madness. Of knowledge. Frenley pieces together a piece of a larger puzzle. But in doing so, his mind became connected to the sun for a second. Connecting points that normally would make no sense together, because of outside knowledge.’
“Wait... you saying I almost went mad? For looking at a stupid painting!?” Frenley said, anger coating his words. Not at the girls or Ailice. But at himself, for having such a weak mind that a simple painting sends him spiraling out of control.
‘Not just any painting, but one of a specific event that changed the world forever. But that itself isn't the problem; the problem is you.’
“What?” Frenley said with an edge to his voice.
‘The painting, it depicts a figure ripping apart their masculinity and femininity. Tell me, sugar, is that not you?’
“What?..”
‘Are you not fighting your own identity? Of being so sure you are a man? But rejecting the clear feminine side of you?’
“No no, I am a man!”
‘Then why did you agree to try a dress in this world to the girls?’
“Because dresses are pretty..”
‘But no man would ever think a dress is pretty and try to wear it. Tell me what you aren't doing but recreating The First Sin.’
Frenley stayed quiet as he looked at his shaking hands. His breathing was slowly becoming more and more ragged. He looked up at the girls, their eyes full of worry. Frenley tried to speak, trying to find his voice, but could not. He looked down at his body. Came to the one conclusion he had since seeing it for the first time in the dream. The same day he met Mia in the training grounds.
He liked this body more than his real one. For the sole reason he liked being perceived as both. But if he likes being confused for a woman. Does that not make him one? Frenley breathed slowly, calming down, as he came to a very logical conclusion. He was both and none.
