Sora-ku, the ‘abandoned’ city, Land of Fire—

After travelling for a few hours, Fugaku finally arrived at Sora-ku, and without drawing too much attention upon himself, he moved through the desolate city, making his way to the area where the Ninja cats operated.

As he entered the building, he noticed several Ninja cats sticking to the walls or standing on the pipes looking at him from both sides… they didn’t greet him, but watched him cautiously, their tails tight, their claws ready.

It looked as though they were looking at someone untrustworthy, someone who shouldn’t be here.

Noting the suspicion and wariness in the eyes of the cats, he pursed his lips in dissatisfaction. This wasn’t his first time in Sora-ku, so there was no way the ninja cats didn’t recognize him. Yet he was being met with such gazes. How could he not be dissatisfied? Is this how these ninja-cats are supposed to look at the legitimate heir and future patriarch of the Uchiha Clan?

‘They are looking down on me...!’ he thought, anger surging in his heart.

Still, he controlled himself, and without saying much, he continued forward.

Fortunately, the ninja cats only looked wary; they didn’t take the initiative to attack him. Had they done that, the situation would have become a little troublesome.

Fugaku wasn’t concerned about his safety. Even if all these ninja cats were to work together, they’d not be able to do much to him. He had that kind of confidence in his strength, but it would have made the next talk that he wanted to have with Neko-baa a little difficult.

Since no trouble arose, he was able to venture deeper until he came face to face with Fūma Misaki, who had come out and seemed to be waiting for him.

“Fugaku-sama…” she politely greeted him with a light bow.

“Fūma Misaki…” Fugaku nodded, unsurprised by her greeting him. The news of his arrival must have reached Neko-baa, hence why Misaki was here to greet him as a courtesy. But this also made him vigilant since he didn’t know how the Fūma Clan would react to his visit… after all, he had been exiled from the Uchiha Clan… and as far as he knew, Kanzou definitely wanted him dead… in regards to that, Fugaku still doesn’t know what the opinion of the Fūma Clan is in this matter, so he could only be vigilant.

With that in mind, he spoke to Misaki, “I am here to speak with Chiaki-san… I wonder if that’s possible…”

Misaki studied him for a moment before replying softly, “Please follow me; Okaa-san is waiting.”

Fugaku nodded and followed her deeper into the building, his senses on high alert as he didn’t want to walk into a trap.

Soon, he was sitting opposite Fūma Chiaki, who is famously known as Neko-baa and is also the Matriarch of the Fūma Clan. She held a pipe in her hand and exhaled smoke while observing Fugaku silently. Misaki also remained in the hall, sitting on the sofa on the side while holding the sleeping Yoru in her lap, and stroking the ninja-cat’s fur…

Other than the two women of the Fūma Clan and a ninja cat, who are usually present at Sora-ku, Fugaku also noted the presence of a man. He was leaning against one of the pillars, hands folded over his chest, a mask covering the lower half of his face, and his head covered with another cloth, leaving only his green eyes exposed, which made it difficult for Fugaku to identify him.

“He is…?” Fugaku wondered aloud.

He had been to Sora-ku multiple times, but this was the first time he was seeing such a man here… a man whom he didn’t recognize.

Normally, Fugaku wouldn’t have been too concerned about the presence of a man here, but this man seemed to give him a dangerous feeling, making him cautious.

Chiaki, smiling playfully, answered Fugaku, “This man… hmm… well… let’s just say that my daughter always wanted a father… and due to some twists and turns, I happened to have found her one…” Having said that, she looked at the man playfully and asked, winking, “Isn’t that right, darling~?”

“Tch…” the man clicked his tongue and turned his head to the side, annoyed with the middle-aged woman’s attitude.

“Okaa-sama… new Otou-sama is really shy…” Misaki said teasingly as well.

“Fufu, it can’t be helped, Misaki… this sort of thing is new for darling~” Chiaki smiled playfully, glancing at the man who seemed annoyed, but made no effort to agree or deny, only silently sighing in his mind, ‘These two women...’

This man is, of course, Kakuzu, who was subdued by Kanzou during his visit to Sora-ku and was tasked to protect this shop owned by the Fūma Clan from Fugaku. Ever since then, he has had no choice but to stay here with this pair of mother and daughter who always keep teasing him.

Kakuzu feels singled out and has had enough already. He wants to run away.

It’s just that he is afraid of Kanzou after being tortured in that strange red space where the flow of time is different from this world. Moreover, the money he has been receiving for staying here and protecting this shop is also good, so he isn’t running away.

But still, it’s annoying to be constantly teased by the pair of mother and daughter.

Fugaku was stunned by the interaction between Chiaki, Misaki, and the man… and looked at him with a strange expression. But, well, this was not his place to judge. What Chiaki does, who she dates, and so on wasn’t his business, and he didn’t care.

‘Regardless of who he is… he seems to be strong… well, this is good… this is beneficial for me…’ he thought. Although the man gave him a dangerous feeling, his existence also made Fugaku excited since he felt that once he was done here, he might be able to get a powerful subordinate.

As he was having such thoughts, a ninja cat brought tea and some snacks for him while Chiaki changed the topic, “Putting aside other things… I am curious… how come you are here… Is it to seek shelter? I am afraid you are at the wrong place…”

Her meaning was obvious… Fugaku, who has been exiled by the Uchiha Clan, shouldn’t be here.

Fugaku clenched his fist in hatred at the man who exiled him, but he tried to keep calm and, ignoring the tea that was presented to him, he cleared his throat before asking Neko-baa, “Fūma Chiaki-san, I remember you had quite a good friendship with my Otou-san…”

Chiaki blew a drag of smoke before answering plainly, “It was a friendship facilitated by business between the two Clans.”

Fugaku frowned, “Business? Is that all that friendship amounted to? Nothing more?”

Chiaki shrugged, “What more could there be?”

Fugaku asked again, “Haven’t you been working with the previous Patriarch for many years? Shouldn’t you show some loyalty?”

“Loyalty?” Chiaki raised an eyebrow and questioned him in return, “Oh, so rather than seeking shelter. You are here to seek my support in claiming the position of the Uchiha Patriarch… is that right?”

Fugaku paused for a moment, realizing there was no point in beating around the bush any longer. He nodded slowly.

“…Yes. I need the support of the Fūma Clan to take back what is rightfully mine.”

The room fell into a heavy silence for a moment as Chiaki studied him carefully, as if weighing his worth and the risks involved, before sighing, “Please spare me…”

“Spare you?” Fugaku raised an eyebrow.

Chiaki nodded, “I don’t want any part in your power struggle,” and added after a pause, “While it’s true that my Fūma Clan is distantly related to the Uchiha Clan and we have had that sort of relationship for many years now, we are just suppliers of weapons. I am just a merchant, that’s all. Who is the Patriarch of the Uchiha Clan, and who is the rightful heir? It doesn’t concern my Fūma Clan at all, nor do I have the power to help you reclaim the position of the Patriarch…”

Fugaku scowled, “Even though the previous patriarch continued to do business with the Fūma Clan for several decades, you have no intention of showing any loyalty?”

Chiaki shrugged, “Please... Uchiha Tadayoshi didn’t do business with us just because of the relationship between the Uchiha Clan and the Fūma Clan. It was because the weapons we smith are of the highest quality and best suited for the Uchiha Clan... It was just a matter of interest, and had nothing to do with loyalty,” and added after another pause, “Besides, I have nothing to gain from helping you out in becoming the Patriarch. The business we receive from the Uchiha Clan hasn’t been affected by Uchiha Kanzou becoming the Patriarch... or rather, it has only increased… taking all that into account, I see no reason why I should support you because I doubt you can provide my clan with any more benefits than I am getting already…”

Fugaku’s expression darkened at her words. He had expected difficulty, but hearing it so bluntly from Chiaki’s mouth did sting his pride. Still trying to maintain his composure, he leaned forward slightly, and after some hesitation, he proposed, “What if I marry your daughter?”

As soon as Fugaku proposed that, there was an exclamation, “Excuse me?”

The one to exclaim was obviously not Chiaki, but Misaki, who didn’t expect herself to be brought up in the discussion.

Fugaku looked at her stunned expression for a moment before shifting his gaze back to Chiaki, continuing, “If I were to marry your daughter, and when I reclaim the position of the Uchiha Patriarch. Your daughter would become the wife of the Uchiha Patriarch. Well, I may even become the next Hokage, and even if it’s not me, my child would surely become the next Hokage.”

‘Another fool chasing power...’ Kakuzu thought, shaking his head.

Unaware of Kakuzu’s thought, Fugaku asked Chiaki, “What do you think?”

Although he is not very happy with marrying a woman who isn’t of the pure Uchiha blood, as that could limit the talent and capabilities of his child—after all, Uchihas who are not pure blood have a hard time using their Sharingan and often face problems with their Chakra reserves—for the sake of taking back his rightful position, he is willing to make this small sacrifice.

‘Fortunately, Fūma Clan has distant blood ties with the Uchiha Clan; as such, Fūma Misaki, even if not of pure blood, would have some Uchiha blood, so she can be used to win over support from the Fūma Clan…’ Fugaku thought to himself.

Moreover, Fūma Misaki isn’t exactly bad-looking. While she may not have the grace and dignified aura around her like Mikoto, and is also not as beautiful as her, Misaki is still not half bad in terms of appearance, so Fugaku is also fine to let her be his temporary wife.

Anyway, after becoming the patriarch, he can have another woman of pure Uchiha descent to be his legitimate wife… so… there is no problem for the time being.

While Fugaku was having such thoughts, Chiaki, unaware of the man’s internal thoughts, looked at her daughter, “What do you think?”

Misaki immediately answered, snorting, “Is that even a question, Okaa-san? As if I’d marry a man like him…” She turned to Fugaku and mocked him to his face, “Have you ever seen your ugly face in the mirror? What made you think that I’d marry you?”

Compared to Kanzou’s handsome face, Fugaku is as ugly as shit; there’s no way she’d ever be interested in such a pathetic man.

“You...!” Fugaku didn’t expect to be mocked in the face. His face turned ugly... no... uglier since it was already ugly to begin with.

“Me what?” Misaki questioned him, giving him a look filled with utter disgust as she added, “An incompetent man like you who made his own fiancée seduce your enemy, letting her sacrifice her dignity… what made you even consider the possibility that I’d ever marry a characterless man like you?”

Fugaku’s expression turned into a scowl. “What did you just say?”

“You heard me loud and clear... or is it that you want me to explain more clearly? Well, if that’s the case, sure, I don’t mind...” said Misaki, continuing, “You forced Mikoto-sama into doing those kinds of things with Kanzou-sama, right? Knowing this, there’s no way I am marrying an incompetent man like you. Who knows what you’ll force me into?”

Fugaku’s anger spiked, and he activated his Sharingan while scowling, “Don’t you dare spout nonsense. I didn’t force Mikoto into anything. It was Mikoto, that ungrateful tramp all along, who worked together with that bastard Kanzou to falsely frame me!!!”

Misaki was a little afraid when facing Fugaku’s Sharingan, but compared to Kanzou’s gaze, which always gives her the feeling of being swallowed by an abyss, Fugaku’s gaze wasn’t as unnerving, so she quickly calmed herself. Not to mention, there was also Kakuzu present just a step away, so she didn’t fear Fugaku and openly questioned him, “Oh? Mikoto-sama framed you? And why would she do that? What would she gain from framing you? Pray tell.”

Faced with Misaki’s question, Fugaku became quiet.

Indeed, in terms of political position, Mikoto doesn’t gain anything from betraying and framing him. Even if she had married him, she’d have become the Patriarch’s wife, and even when marrying Kanzou, she would only be the Patriarch’s wife. She really had nothing to gain, so why would she betray him? Why would she frame him?

The answer is obvious… It’s because she was cheating on him with Kanzou. It’s because she wanted to be with Kanzou and wanted him out of the picture! That’s the only reason!

The reminder of that bitch’s betrayal only made him angrier. Her betrayal also hurt his pride as a man and made him feel humiliated and inadequate.

It’s just that he didn’t want to reveal the humiliation he went through, so he couldn’t explain.

“Don’t have anything to say for yourself? Cat got your tongue? Humph,” Misaki snorted at his silence.

“You…!” Fugaku felt his anger surge more towards Misaki. How could he tolerate this repeated mockery right to his face?

Misaki didn’t back down, meeting his glare with defiance. “What? Did I hit a nerve? You forced Mikoto-sama into those kinds of things, and now you want to use me as a replacement? How pathetic.”

Fugaku’s body trembled with barely contained fury as the room’s atmosphere grew thick with tension, causing Kakuzu to raise his finger in preparation for the fight that may break out any moment.

On the other hand, noting that Fugaku may lose control at any moment, Chiaki scolded her daughter, “Alright, Misaki, be quiet… and apologize.”

“Tch…” Misaki clicked her tongue and turned her head. As for an apology? No way was she going to apologize to Fugaku, who is Kanzou’s enemy. Kanzou’s enemy means he is her enemy. Why would she apologize to her enemy? Especially the enemy who wants to marry her. Fugaku can go fuck himself for all she cares.

Chiaki didn’t pressure Misaki for apology, and instead turned her attention to Fugaku, questioning him, “By the way, I had heard that it was you who broke off the engagement with Mikoto-sama… you should have known that if you broke your engagement with her, you’d lose support from Uchiha Tadayoshi, and yet you did that… wasn’t that a foolish thing to do? I wonder why you did that?”

“…” Fugaku became quiet, not knowing how to answer.

His engagement with Mikoto, he broke it off in accordance with the deal he had made with Kanzou. He agreed to sell her out to Kanzou so that Kanzou would back away from the position of Patriarch.

Anyway, at that time, Mikoto was already cheating on him with Kanzou, so that bitch wasn’t fit to marry him. He had to break off his engagement with her; all that mattered was the timing. Originally, he had planned to break the engagement after taking the position of the Patriarch, but things were getting difficult for him, and he was no longer confident in becoming the Patriarch.

Mikoto’s affair with Kanzou also meant that Elder Tadayoshi was going to change his support towards Kanzou, which made it impossible for him to become the Patriarch.

In that difficult situation, Kanzou gave him the offer to sell out Mikoto in exchange for the position of the Patriarch.

In that losing battle, such an offer was too tempting to refuse. He was suspicious in his heart that Kanzou was going to betray him, but Fugaku still ended up giving in to the temptation. Anyway, he had nothing to lose, and if he could get Kanzou to back away, then it was a win-win for him.

Well, that was what he thought, and he thought wrong because Kanzou had never intended to stick to his words.

As a result, Fugaku ended up breaking his engagement with Mikoto for nothing, and even gave a legitimate way for Kanzou and Mikoto to get together without any scandal or having her dignity questioned over her secret affair and betrayal.

The one who ended up getting humiliated and exiled was the one who was actually the victim!

In hindsight, making that deal with Kanzou and hiding their secret affair was indeed a foolish thing to do. He should have exposed their affair and cheating. Even if he was going to be looked down upon by some people for being cheated on, at least he might not have been framed for forcing Mikoto into seducing Kanzou.

Rather, it would have been Kanzou and Mikoto who’d lose all support from the clansmen for cheating on him.

He really should have done that. But it was already too late for that, and now all he can do is regret that he hid their secret affair. It’s a pity that there is no medicine for regrets.

Still, it was difficult to explain to Chiaki, as explaining this would only expose that he was cucked by Kanzou. But if he didn’t explain the truth, then the chances of gaining the support of the Fūma Clan might be difficult.

‘If I want their support… I’ll have to tell the real reason…’ he thought.

Although he felt humiliated to reveal the real reason, he had no choice but to do it, and so he began to speak, “The truth of what happened…”

...

After a while, the atmosphere was a bit heavy as Fugaku revealed everything…

Chiaki exhaled smoke, and Kakuzu was silent, somewhat pitying Fugaku for getting cheated on, but wasn’t too surprised. He, who has worked as a Shinobi for many years, especially in the black market, has seen much of the world and human nature. Therefore, cheating and so on are far too common in the world. It’s not too rare for missions to appear in the black market that involve an extramarital affair and the need to assassinate the legal husband or something along those lines.

For this reason, Kakuzu believes that loyalty, fidelity, love, and so on are all false. No matter how many promises or vows people make, more often than not, they end up breaking the very promises and vows without much thought.

It’s a nihilistic thought. But it is what it is, and if there is a truth in the world, it’s money. Indeed, money is the only end-all, be-all in this world, as everyone wants money. Which is precisely why Kakuzu is also interested in money, because money is the only existence that never lies, never betrays, never breaks any promises or vows.

Putting aside Kakuzu’s nihilistic thought. Hearing Fugaku’s sob story, Misaki was unimpressed. In fact, she was even a little amused internally, thinking that the man was really pathetic. ‘Well, this is what’s bound to happen to any man who is making Kanzou-sama an enemy,’ she thought internally, knowing full well the bad tendencies of her master.

But she didn’t show her true thoughts on her face, and responded plainly, “If what you say is really true, then I suppose I can pity you and maybe even feel sorry for you… But that’s it. It doesn’t mean I’ll agree to marry you…”

Hearing Misaki’s words, Chiaki turned to Fugaku, “Well, that’s what my daughter says.”

“And you are going along with her decision…?” Fugaku questioned with a frown.

Misaki was unhappy and questioned, “Isn’t my refusal enough?”

“...” Fugaku ignored her and looked at Chiaki, waiting for her response.

Opinion of a woman in concern? Since when did that matter in politically arranged marriages? Regardless of what Fūma Misaki may think, if Chiaki, who is the leader of the Fūma Clan, agrees to his proposal, then Misaki will have to comply.

“Tch,” Misaki also knew this and clicked her tongue.

Normally, if her mother decided for her to marry Fugaku, she would have no choice but to do so for the sake of the Clan… Still, the fact that Fugaku didn’t give a dime about her refusal made her unhappy.

‘You deserve to be cheated on by my Mikoto-sama…’ she thought.

Even if she knew that Mikoto probably didn’t cheat on Fugaku and it was Kanzou forcefully violating her, she still felt happy in her heart that Fugaku was cucked.

On the other hand, Chiaki shrugged, “As a woman myself, what my daughter thinks is indeed important to me.”

Fugaku clenched his fist, “So you are refusing me?”

Chiaki nodded, “That’s correct. Anyway, my Fūma Clan doesn’t wish to be part of the internal conflict of the Uchiha Clan. I’ll just remain a bystander; whoever becomes the Uchiha Patriarch does not concern me…”

Fugaku’s expression darkened further. He had laid bare his humiliation, only to be rejected so coldly. How could that not make him angry?

“You might come to regret turning me down. When I become the Patriarch, the Fūma Clan might lose all the business with the Uchiha Clan…” Fugaku threatened.

Chiaki snorted, amused rather than afraid, “Oh? A threat, huh?”

Misaki immediately mocked him, “Even though you are nothing more than an exiled man with zero support, you are still threatening us? Don’t you know that, given your pathetic situation, your threat is meaningless? But sure… go on, do you, anyway, I doubt that an incompetent man like you can become the Patriarch of the Uchiha Clan…”

Her mockery riled up Fugaku again in anger… but before he could blow up, Chiaki silenced her, “Alright, Misaki… be quiet.”

“Humph…” Misaki snorted, going quiet.

After once again silencing her daughter, Chiaki looked at Fugaku again, but with a smile that was not kind as she said, “Fugaku-sama… Regarding your threat, all I have to say is that you are welcome to try and procure the weapons of the same quality the Fūma Clan provides for the same prices… And even if we lose the Uchiha Clan as the buyer of our weapons, I am sure there are other Clans and shinobi villages that would come forward to buy the weapons we make…” she paused and added with a grin, “The weapons made by the Fūma Clan aren’t best because the Uchiha clan uses them, rather, it’s because our weapons are the best that the Uchiha Clan uses them…”

Fugaku could only remain silent because Chiaki was indeed right about that.

Fūma Clan is indeed one of the best weapon manufacturers in the shinobi world, and because of their long relationship with the Uchiha Clan, they have always prioritized the Uchiha Clan in providing weapons… over any other Clan or Shinobi Village.

But… just because the Uchiha Clan is prioritized doesn’t mean that the Fūma Clan doesn’t have other clients… Therefore, even if the Uchihas stop buying from the Fūma Clan, the demand for the best product would not dry up. So, threatening Chiaki with losing their major client in supporting him was really not going to work.

Chiaki took another slow puff from her pipe, her sharp eyes fixed on Fugaku’s face. “So, unless you have something more substantial to offer… I suggest you leave, Fugaku-sama,” she said.

“Leave… huh?” murmured Fugaku, noting Misaki and Chiaki’s expression. One of them looked at him with scorn, and the other with indifference. He didn’t like either of their gazes, especially the fact that both of them were turning him down, and that too while mocking him and looking down on him…

What were they taking him for? He was trying to respectfully form an alliance and even willing to take Misaki, who is not even as beautiful as Mikoto, as his wife… but… but they… not only refused but even mocked him for proposing that?

His anger surged, and the temper he was trying his best to restrain was becoming more and more difficult to restrain.

Fugaku’s expression twisted with rage and desperation. “If it’s like this, then…” he growled, getting up with a dark, menacing look on his face. “Since you don’t want to cooperate even though I asked nicely… then… I really have no other choice…”

Before either Misaki or Chiaki could react, Fugaku lunged forward with explosive speed, his hands reaching viciously toward both of their necks.

If the situation had been normal, Fugaku would have easily captured both women. They would have been left helpless and at his mercy. After all, compared to him, neither of their strengths was particularly impressive, and his attack had come too suddenly and too fast.

But… the situation was far from normal.

Putting aside the fact that both women had been vigilant and prepared for the possibility of being attacked, there was also Kakuzu present in the hall with the explicit purpose of protecting them from him.

The moment Fugaku lunged at the two women, Kakuzu reacted instantly. With a powerful kick, he sent the sofa on which Misaki and Chiaki were sitting flying backward, pushing them safely out of Fugaku’s reach.

“Damn it…” Fugaku snarled, immediately turning toward the displaced sofa where the two women were trying to regain their balance. He wanted to target them again…

But just then, he felt the overwhelming threat of death closing in. Reacting by instinct, he drew out his short sword in a flash to block the incoming attack.

Ding!

A loud, metallic sound echoed through the hall as Fugaku felt a heavy, crushing pressure slam into his blade. What surprised him was that despite the sharp edge of his short sword colliding directly with the man’s fist, it didn’t cut through the skin at all. It was strange… how could someone’s skin be so hard that it resisted a blade like this?

“Body hardening with Earth Style?” Fugaku immediately guessed, thanks to his extensive knowledge, experience, and the visible flow of chakra, along with the hardened texture.

“As expected of someone with the Sharingan… but…” Kakuzu chuckled. Then, he suddenly opened his palm, seizing the blade firmly, before raising his other hand and punching straight at Fugaku’s face while taunting him, “There is no reward for guessing right…”

Fugaku saw the incoming punch clearly. Thanks to the Eye of Insight of his Sharingan, he perfectly read the trajectory it would take and shifted his body slightly to dodge while preparing a counterattack of his own.

However, just then, something completely unexpected happened. The punch that should have been cleanly dodged still struck him squarely in the face with brutal force.

Bang!

Another heavy impact sounded as the power of the punch blasted Fugaku backward. His body slammed hard into the far wall, cracking the stone behind him as dust and debris flew everywhere.

The force also rattled his bones, sending a sharp jolt of pain through his body. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth as he slid down slightly, his eyes wide in shock and fury.

“How…?” he growled, wiping the blood from his lips. The punch had defied his prediction and gone off trajectory, which shouldn’t have been possible.

“Why don’t you make another guess?” responded Kakuzu, grunting as he readied himself for the battle.
