The Girl Who Looted Tomorrow

Chapter 57, The Luck Test

The two children wanted to help clean up the scattered things, but Freya simply told them the briefcase was not hers.

She put the pen back inside, zipped the briefcase shut, stood it upright against the wall, and decided to leave the rest alone.

Hopefully, when the owner came back and found the potion spilled all over the ground, they would not blame her.

The main issue was that this whole thing was far too strange. If she had simply picked up a potion, that could be chalked up to extremely good luck. If Freya had accidentally broken one of her own potions, that could perhaps be chalked up to bad luck.

But when both things happened at the same time, Freya did not believe that a world with extraordinary powers would have such a convenient coincidence.

“Am I being targeted by something weird?”

Freya quickly left the area and headed to Euphemia’s house. That said, she was not especially worried. The system prompt said the next death crisis was still a very long way off, more than a year away.

During that period, even if she really did run into danger, it would probably just be some minor issue she could solve easily.

After all, she had already fought General Jerome, a Rank Five general of the kingdom. Could this city really suddenly cough up someone even stronger than Jerome?

When Freya arrived at Euphemia’s house and was changing shoes, Effie came running over in high spirits.

“Faye, my grandfather replied! He also mailed over two bottles of Scholar Path potion!”

As she spoke, she grabbed Freya’s hand and pulled her into the house. But Freya had only taken off one shoe.

“Eh, eh, wait! My shoe isn’t even off yet!”

When they reached the living room, the first thing Freya saw was the two potion bottles on the table, along with that little white dove.

As Freya walked over, the little dove deliberately glanced at her. Then it turned its head, flapped its wings, and flew away.

Euphemia explained, “My messenger is just like that. It almost never lets anyone besides me touch it.”

Hearing this, Freya’s mouth twitched slightly.

She muttered silently, When it was in front of Life Freya, that little dove of yours was not like this at all.

Euphemia pointed to the bottle on the left side of the table.

“This one is the Rank One bottle.”

Freya, however, did not drink it immediately. Instead, she first told Euphemia about the strange thing that had happened on her way over.

Sure enough, Euphemia’s first reaction after hearing it was, “That is absolutely not normal, okay?”

Freya asked, “Do you know any extraordinary abilities related to luck?”

Euphemia got stuck for a moment.

“Uh… let me think…”

After a while, she said, “Maybe… possibly… related to the Fate Path? I’m not sure either. Honestly, among the twelve confirmed Paths, the Fate Path can be considered one of the most mysterious.”

Freya crossed her arms and thought aloud.

“Now that you mention it, I’ve always felt that my luck was pretty good.”

This time, perhaps her luck had simply exploded and let her pick up a potion for free. But maybe a Fate Path practitioner was targeting her, or perhaps they also wanted that potion and had placed some bad luck on her.

In the end, those factors might have combined into what happened today.

Euphemia looked puzzled.

“Really? But even good luck shouldn’t be so good that you just walk down the street and pick up a potion for free, right?”

Freya said, “But I really do feel like my luck is good. Everyone I meet is nice and kind. Even the gang thug near my home was willing to give me money.”

Euphemia stared at her.

“?”

Putting aside whatever that last bit about a thug giving her money meant, Euphemia said, “Judging your luck based on only that seems a little one-sided, doesn’t it?”

The best way to test luck was, naturally, to play a game of chance.

Without looking back, Euphemia left the living room. Soon, she ran back with two dice.

“Come on. Let’s compare dice rolls and see who gets the higher number.”

Freya was curious as well, so she naturally did not refuse.

Euphemia rolled first, and right away, she rolled an absurdly good result, a six and a five. Eleven points.

The corner of her mouth lifted slightly. Then she looked at Freya.

“Your turn.”

Freya rolled an ordinary six and three, nine points. She lost the first round.

But one round proved nothing, so the two continued rolling dice. What followed, however, gradually made Euphemia break into a cold sweat.

Seven to ten. Eight to ten. Three to nine.

Aside from Euphemia winning the first round, she lost five games in a row.

In terms of probability, their chances of winning or losing should both be fifty percent. But the results were nothing like that.

After several more rounds of testing, Euphemia had one lucky burst and rolled eleven again, barely winning once. Aside from that, she lost every game.

The final result was that they played twenty rounds of dice. Euphemia won twice.

Freya won eighteen times.

Euphemia looked at the dice on the table and fell into deep thought.

“Okay. I now agree with what you said at the start. Your luck is frighteningly good. Or rather… frighteningly stable.”

Euphemia discovered that her own dice results went up and down. At her highest, she rolled eleven. At her lowest, she rolled three. That was perfectly normal. After all, everyone had moments of good luck and bad luck.

But Freya was completely different.

Faye’s dice almost always stabilized at nine or ten. Only on rare occasions did she roll eleven or twelve. Across twenty full games, Freya had not rolled below eight even once.

It was as if, for Freya, nine was already the worst possible result.

Euphemia said, “I think… you might be more suited to taking a Fate Path potion.”

Freya glanced at the two Scholar potions on the table.

“The problem is, we have nowhere to get a Fate Path potion. Even if I wanted to drink one, I can’t.”

Euphemia suddenly said, “Then do you think… the potion you picked up during the day might have been a Rank One Fate Path potion?”

Freya fell silent.

Because she felt that this really was possible. The possibility was not low either.

After a pause, she said, “But no matter what, my luck was too bad at the time. That potion has already shattered. There’s no point talking about it now, right?”

What she thought in her heart, however, was that if the potion she had picked up really was a Fate Path potion, she actually would not dare drink it.

A benefit that fell from the sky for no reason made her inexplicably uneasy. It did not feel like anything good.

She even began to wonder if maybe… it was not that her good luck had made her pick up that potion. Perhaps it was the opposite. Because her luck was too good, she had accidentally broken that potion.

After ending that topic, Freya finally looked at the two Scholar potions on the table.

“Mmph. Can you wait for me for a moment? I’ll go to the bathroom first and prepare myself.”

Euphemia nodded in understanding.

“It’s normal to be nervous the first time you drink a potion. But relax. Scholar potions are among the gentler types.”

Freya nodded.

But the real reason she went to the bathroom was not that at all. In the previous second, she had already opened and closed a simulation in an instant.

Inside her system, Save Slot 03 had already become “Scholar Freya.”

However, in the simulation, there had only been Scholar Freya. She could not judge whether she had digested the potion by herself. She needed Life Freya’s help. So after drinking the potion, she had immediately saved and exited.

Then, inside the bathroom, Freya secretly released both Life Freya and Scholar Freya.

Life Freya activated [Mind Sense] and carefully examined Scholar Freya. After a thorough look, she reached a conclusion.

There was some pre-digestion, but not much.

It was probably enough to support Scholar Freya through drinking the Rank Two potion. But if she wanted to advance to Rank Three, she would need to keep “uncovering the truth” like Euphemia to speed up digestion.

The moment this conclusion was reached, Freya recalled both clones and silently muttered to herself.

Looking at it this way, she could not speedrun to Rank Five on every Path. Only the War Path and Earth Path were exceptions.

But why, of all things, could the Scholar Path advance directly to Rank Two?

What was the logic behind that?
