DMS Chapter 171

DMS Chapter 171

Flinx laughed at himself for realizing how helpless he would be when it came to surviving in the wilderness without the resources provided by his transmigration gift.

Just like any Earthling, he turned to the internet to find the information he needed to set up a proper campfire. He watched several videos about starting a fire from scratch and followed the instructions on what types of branches he needed to gather and how to arrange the firewood according to what the uploaders had demonstrated.

After setting up the campfire, the only thing left was lighting it. He watched a video about creating fire from scratch, but gave up after only a minute. When he considered the amount of effort it would require, he decided it wasn’t worth it.

Instead, he simply cast the Firebolt cantrip, and soon a warm, cozy campfire was burning at his campsite.

Flinx then retrieved a camping table and chair that he had purchased while traveling with the merchant caravan from Bertol Town to Ilioven. He also brought out the solar light he had bought before and ordered his dinner through his System Shopping Site.

While eating, Pip informed him that travelers were approaching the campsite. According to his familiar, they appeared to be adventurers. Pip had also noticed that one of them, who seemed to be the leader of the group, had a Silver Rank Adventurer Guild Card displayed on his chest like a medallion.

The moment the group entered the campsite, they noticed Flinx eating dinner at the small table he had set up.

“Good evening, sir. Would it be alright if we shared your campsite?” the man who appeared to be the leader asked.

Flinx noticed the silver rank guild card on the man’s chest. The man also looked significantly older than the rest of the group. He appeared to be in his forties, while the other four members seemed to be in their early twenties.

Flinx had hidden his own guild card inside his inventory whenever he believed he wouldn’t encounter any locals or when he was preparing to rest. He didn’t want to accidentally lose it and have to frantically search for it.

He considered showing his adventurer card to the group, but decided against it. He wanted to see how other travelers would react when they learned that he was not an adventurer.

Fortunately, Flinx had already set up his sleeping bag beside the camping chair and table, so he didn’t need to use his fourth tab space in front of the adventurers.

“Of course, you can join me, Sir Adventurer. This is a public campsite for travelers. My name is Flinx,” Flinx replied.

The man introduced his group to Flinx, and afterward, everyone began setting up their own campsite.

While the younger adventurers were busy, their leader carried over a large wooden stump and sat beside Flinx at his small camping table.

Flinx was only halfway through his dinner, so the man naturally noticed the food he was eating.

“What is that?” the middle-aged man asked while pointing at Flinx’s meal.

“It’s called a hamburger and fries. It’s a grilled beef patty with tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, and sauce placed between two slices of bread. The fries are thinly sliced potatoes fried in oil.”

While Flinx and the adventurer were talking, the group began preparing their own dinner. They cooked some kind of stew in a pot, roasted small animals they had hunted, and heated the bread they carried with them.

“That looks delicious! I’ll try making one. We have bread and meat, but unfortunately, we don’t have any vegetables to put together with the beef,” the man said.

“You can use your stew as a sauce for the hamburger,” Flinx suggested.

“That’s a good idea!” the man exclaimed, suddenly becoming eager for his group to finish cooking.

While waiting for the food to be ready, Flinx and the adventurer continued talking. The man asked about the solar camping light, and Flinx simply explained that it was a magical light he had picked up in Ilioven.

They also discussed the man’s work as a Silver Rank Adventurer. He was currently escorting a group of Copper Rank Adventurers on their first mission, which involved eliminating goblins reported by nearby farmers.

The group was still traveling toward the mission location. They had left Ilioven early that morning and expected to arrive by tomorrow afternoon.

Flinx told the man that he was a merchant who had finished his business and was now traveling back home. However, when the adventurer asked where his home was, Flinx awkwardly changed the subject.

He realized that the adventurer had probably become suspicious of him. Unfortunately, Flinx knew very little about this planet’s geography, existing nations, and political situation.

He decided that in the future, he would avoid making up stories that depended on knowledge he didn’t possess.

After a while, the adventurer was called by his group to eat, and for several minutes, everyone focused on their meal.

While the group was eating, Flinx prepared to rest. He secretly cleaned himself using the Prestidigitation spell before entering his thick and comfortable sleeping bag.

He wasn’t worried about being attacked while sleeping since Pip and the wind elemental would protect him.

Even though Flinx wasn’t particularly tired, he stayed inside his sleeping bag and spent some time browsing the internet through his transmigration gift. Eventually, sleep overtook him.

When he woke up, it was still dark outside. However, after checking the time, he saw that it was already five in the morning. The sun would rise soon, but Flinx didn’t want to wait for the adventurers to wake up before leaving.

He stored all his belongings inside his fourth tab space and quietly left the campsite.

As he continued walking along the road, he maintained his leisurely pace.

Flinx enjoyed the cool morning air and the beautiful songs of the birds emerging from the forest. He remembered reading one of his favorite fantasy novels written by David Eddings, one of his favorite fantasy authors. In the story, one of the female protagonists mentioned that birdsong was simply birds shouting at other birds to stay away because the area belonged to them.

Basically, the birds were just saying, “Mine! Mine!”

Flinx didn’t know whether it was true, but he found it amusing when he remembered the animated film Finding Nemo, where a group of pelicans shouted the same thing.

Soon, Flinx heard the sound of horse hooves approaching and realized it was the adventurer group that had shared his campsite the previous night.

“Mister Flinx! Why are you walking? I thought I didn’t see any mounts with you last night,” the middle-aged Silver Rank Adventurer said after stopping when he saw Flinx.

“I do have a vehicle, but I keep it inside my storage item. I decided to walk because the weather is nice today,” Flinx admitted.

“You have a spatial item?!” one of the young adventurers exclaimed.

Flinx smiled.

“I do. Aside from being a merchant, I’m also a wizard.”

“So that’s why you’re walking around alone so confidently,” the Silver Rank Adventurer said.

After talking for a little longer, the group finally continued their mission while Flinx resumed his leisurely walk.

He noticed that some of the younger adventurers kept looking back at him.

What Flinx didn’t know was that they were discussing him and his identity as a wizard. Their leader had warned them not to offend him since it was most likely true.

After all, who else would walk along a dangerous road at such a relaxed pace, as if they were simply strolling through a park?
