Strongest Maid In Another World

Chapter 88: The Fear Of Losing You

"I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have sneaked out last night."

The words hung in the air for a long moment, the air silent and charged with an underlying tension. Sarah’s eyes remained locked onto Loraine’s apologetic ones, the crystal blue depths of her soul brimming through out as she stared at Loraine for a long moment, her expression turning sour.

’Oh no, I really messed up this time....I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sarah like this before.’ Loraine thought, swallowing nervously as a bad feeling washed all over her.

Loraine felt her heart crack at the way Sarah looked at her, as an unbearable weight settled onto her chest, further amplifying her sadness and regret as she saw Sarah take a deep breath, settling her nerves before she began to speak.

"It’s....It’s fine...." Sarah said, her words more breathy than she had intended, her chest rising and falling with the effort to hide her pain, the sight further amplifying the white haired maiden’s guilt. "You’re safe, that’s all that matters....."

’No...that’s not what she’s thinking right now, her words say she’s past this thing, but her heart tells a different story. She’s mad, no she’s absolutely pissed, but she doesn’t want to take that anger out on me.’

Loraine thought, her breath hitching in her throat as her gaze dropped to the floor, where her hand settled over Sarah’s.

"...." Yura watched the confrontation between the two, feeling a bit awkward as she didn’t expect the spectacle to be so emotional.

"I know you’re trying not to be mad at me right now, I can feel it with how bad your trembling..." Loraine said, looking up at Sarah who was looking away, her expression turning to that of anger and indifference.

"You were worried about me, I know that, but I still wanted to go out and see if I could’ve done it, If I could’ve become an adventurer-"

"And that’s exactly why I’ve been so worried Loraine!" Sarah said, her voice finally snapping as she stared at Loraine with an angry expression, Loraine’s eyes widening in shock as she felt the wrath emanating off her best friend’s tone.

"I was worried when I woke up this morning, as I didn’t know where you were! I was worried that you could’ve been killed while you out there doing something stupid!" Sarah said, slamming her hands on the desk as she stood up, staring at Loraine with tears pricking at the corners of her eyes.

The whole restaurant went quiet, the adventurers in the room stopping mid sentence in their conversations as they felt the air shift, their eyes locked onto the confrontation as they began to listen, afraid to speak as if the maid’s wrath could end them right then and there.

"Sarah, I-!"

"No! Let me finish!" Sarah said, cutting Loraine off once more as the white haired maiden flinched, her heart shattering at the sight of her best friend’s meltdown.

"You’re always trying to do things that’ll constantly get you in danger, Loraine." She said with a sniff, her body trembling slightly as Loraine could feel the vibrations coming off of her. She spoke again, her head lowered and her tone softer as her voice cracked slightly.

"You’re strong, I know that....I’ve seen it first hand." She said, exhaling a shaky breath as she placed her hand over her chest. "But you’re also stupid, you’ve almost gotten yourself killed once, I almost lost my best friend once and that fear has stayed with me for the longest time."

"I know what you’re capable of, but I can’t stand the thought of you being in danger, because I already know what it’s like to almost lose you, and I don’t want to spend my days constantly worrying if you’re going to be okay or not, as the monsters out there are dangerous!"

Sarah spoke, her tone emotional as she glanced over at the wide-eyed Loarine, staring deep into her best friend’s crimson eyes.

"Maybe I care too much, maybe I’m being too overprotective, even when I know you’re far stronger than I am, but I don’t want to know that there’s a possibility I could lose the most important person In my life."

Sarah said, the tone in her voice taking a cold lilt as Loraine realized that she had taken Sarah’s worries for granted and didn’t fully realize just how much her best friend truly cared for her, her crimson eyes tracking her as she watched Sarah leave the restaurant, her retreating footsteps echoing out the room like a countdown she wasn’t prepared for.

"Sarah wait!" Loraine yelled after her, panic rising in her chest as she watched Sarah begin running, pushing herself off her chair as she began to chase after her, a heavy combination of guilt and shame making her vision blur as tears welled up in her own eyes.

The restaurant went dead silent as they watched Loraine give chase after the blonde haired maiden, Yura staring at the pair in disbelief as she still couldn’t process the emotional turmoil Sarah must’ve been in for her to react like that, a sigh escaping her lips as she reclined back into her chair.

’Great, just great.’ Yura thought to herself, her eyes glued to the ceiling. ’Not that reaction I was hoping for, but If I’m going to be able to fulfil my end of the deal and see just how much that girl can grow, I need to step in and help make this right.’

Yura pushed herself off the table as well, steadily walking out of the restaurant after the pair as she didn’t want to intercept them immediately.

Tap! Tap! Tap!

Rustle! Rustle! Rustle!

’Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!’ Loraine cursed at herself inwardly, her legs pounding against the floorboards as she ran after her best friend, gritting her teeth as she started to feel unbearable stupid for what she had just done.

"Sarah! Wait! Let’s talk about this!" Loraine tried to communicate as they ran through the halls, but Sarah wasn’t listening, as just as Loraine was about to catch up to her, she ran into her room and slammed the door shut behind her, the locks clicking as Loraine was effectively locked out.

’Damn it....’
