Kurone
DING DONG
The second ring was significantly longer, louder, and more insistent than the first, with the vibration echoing down the dark entryway.
"Stay here, Akane," I said, my voice dropping into a flat, hard whisper as I pushed myself up from the sofa, feeling a knot in my stomach.
I knew who was ringing the bell at this hour. There could be only one person.
"Shin..." she reached out, her fingers catching the edge of my sleeve.
"Just stay on the couch, Akane. I'll check it," I repeated, my tone leaving zero room for argument.
She let go of the fabric reluctantly, and her golden eyes dark with a mixture of irritation and an underlying, sharp tension.
I walked out of the living room, my bare feet sinking silently into the soft carpet of the hallway, and the house felt suddenly immense and cold again.
The faint yellow light from the porch lamp outside filtered through the frosted glass panels of the front door, casting a blurry, distorted silhouette on the entryway wall.
As I stopped a foot away from the door, I took a slow, quiet breath, reached out, and looked through the small brass peephole.
In that moment, my heart completely stopped beating against my ribs for an instant.
"Shin?" Akane's voice floated down the corridor from the living room. It was tight, strained, and filled with a rising, sharp authority. "Who is standing outside the door?"
I couldn't physically force the words out of my throat right away since my vision was entirely locked on the image through the glass.
Out there on the wooden porch, illuminated by the harsh yellow bulb, was a figure I recognized instantly. The angel that commanded seven years of my life.
The long, curly strawberry-blonde hair was an absolute, chaotic mess around her face, and the iconic pink ribbon she always wore was missing entirely. Her school uniform blazer was rumpled, her shoulders slumped forward in complete defeat. Moreover, her face was terrifyingly pale, and her large eyes were violently swollen and bright red, probably from hours of heavy, uninterrupted crying.
Kurone Tsugikawa.
"S-Shin-kun, please..." her voice tore through the heavy wood of the door, a broken, sobbing whimper that sounded entirely stripped of her usual melodic perfection. She leaned forward, placing her forehead flat against the cold wood of the barrier. "Please, Shin-kun. I know you're inside. I desperately need to talk to you. Please. Just give me five minutes. Just five minutes, please."
That was a different voice; something that I've never heard during my childhood. Kurone desperately wanted to talk to me. Incredible. My old self would've craved for something like that.
Inside my pockets, my hands began to tremble again—a low, rhythmic vibration of absolute disbelief.
Behind me, the soft, near-silent patter of bare feet echoed against the hardwood as Akane stepped into the narrow entryway, with her slender frame stopping right beside my shoulder.
"Shin," she whispered, her voice a low, dangerous growl as she stared down at the frosted glass. "Who the hell is it?"
I turned my head slowly, looking down at her, and in that moment, her face had gone completely pale, her jaw locked tight, her golden eyes dark as night.
She didn't need me to speak the name, because she already knew. She had seen the silhouette.
"Kurone," I said, the syllable tasting like ash on my tongue.
Akane didn't even flinch. She didn't let out an angry curse, not even a single micro-expression of panic or surprise.
Her entire face simply hardened, settling into an absolute, sub-zero mask of pure, unyielding ice.
In that moment, the lone wolf was fully back, standing at my side, staring at the door as if it were an enemy fortification.
She took a slow, deep breath, her eyes locking onto mine with an unblinking, absolute clarity.
"Open the door," she said.
I blinked, staring at her in genuine shock. "What?"
"Open the door, Shin," she repeated. Her voice was completely calm, heavily controlled, and vibrating with an unshakable, icy authority that cut through the sound of the sobbing outside. "It's time to finally put an end to this garbage. Open it."
"Y-Yeah... okay," I muttered.
Then, I reached out, with my fingers wrapping around the cold brass lock.
I turned it, the metallic mechanism sliding open with a heavy click that sounded definitive in the quiet entryway, and then I pulled the front door open.
The moment the barrier moved, Kurone's swollen, red-rimmed eyes snapped upward.
I could see a sudden, pathetic surge of pure joy and relief illuminating her tear-streaked face.
Her lips parted, a desperate breath escaping her chest as she realized I had actually answered.
She took a step forward, completely ready to pour herself over the threshold, probably ready to beg me to let her stay for just a little while, to find her usual shelter in my house.
But her momentum died almost instantly. The relief on her face withered, her eyes widening in absolute horror as the door swung open completely.
Standing right beside me, leaning her shoulder casually against the doorframe, was Akane.
The lighting from the hallway lamp cast a stark glow over us.
Akane hadn't changed into her uniform or put on pants, still wearing my massive, oversized black t-shirt, with the fabric draped loosely down to her bare thighs, and her legs completely exposed.
Her black, jagged hair was a wild jungle around her face, and her lips were still visibly darkened and swollen from the intensity of the kiss we had shared just moments ago.
The underlying message was deafeningly clear, requiring zero imagination to decode. It looked like we had been tearing into each other on the furniture.
Kurone physically shuddered, a visible tremor racking her small frame as she stared at her former best friend wearing my clothes.
But before the silence could grow too heavy, Akane broke it. She shifted her posture, a bright, blindingly innocent smile suddenly spreading across her face.
In that moment, the cold, sub-zero mask vanished, replaced by the perfect facade of a welcoming, friendly classmate.
"Hey! Kuro!" Akane chirped, her voice dripping with an artificial, sweet warmth that made my skin crawl. "What are you doing here so late?"
Kurone stood completely stunned, her mouth opening and closing slightly as she looked between the two of us.
She looked entirely paralyzed, completely stripped of the vocabulary she usually used to control a room.
"What do you want, Kurone?" I asked, my voice flat, tight, and thoroughly annoyed.
I kept my hand firmly on the edge of the door, offering absolutely no invitation for her to cross the threshold.
Then, Kurone's gaze dropped away from my face, with her chest heaving with a shallow, uneven breath.
She reached down, her trembling hands lifting a small, neatly wrapped plastic container she had been hiding behind her back.
Inside, sitting under the clear lid, was a small, artisanal caramel pastry. It was a sweet treat she had prepared herself, a replica of the desserts she used to demand I buy for her.
"N-Nothing..." she whispered, her voice sounding half-dead, completely hollowed out by the reality standing in front of her. "I... I just prepared this. I wanted to give it to you... to apologize for how horribly I behaved at the karaoke box and..."
She stopped speaking, her knuckles turning white as she unconsciously squeezed the plastic container with an intense, desperate strength, nearly cracking the lid.
"And for what exactly, Kuro?" Akane asked, her head tilting to the side, her lips curving into a thoroughly mischievous, razor-sharp smirk that completely gave away the trap.
Kurone's jaw clenched, her teeth grinding together so hard I could almost hear it over the sound of her rapid breathing.
The humiliation was absolute.
Moreover, I knew that Kurone wasn't stupid.
Looking at the state of Akane's hair, my oversized shirt, and the heavy physical heat radiating from the entryway, she already understood perfectly well that a new Shin and Akane were living together like rabbits, indulging in everything she had denied me for seven years.
But looking at the cold clarity in my eyes, she also realized with a sickening jolt that she possessed absolutely zero right to speak. She had no authority here anymore.
I remained entirely silent, refusing to offer her a single word of comfort or validation; I just stared at the pastry in her hands, feeling nothing but profound exhaustion.
Seeing my silence, Akane reached out, and with a fluid, casual movement, she took the plastic container cleanly out of Kurone's trembling grip.
"A-" Kurone tried to say, surprised by Akane's gesture. She tried to reach for the bag, but immediately dropped her arms.
"Kuro, you are seriously too sweet! Thank you so much!" Akane exclaimed, her voice mimicking the cheerful enthusiasm of a grateful best friend.
Before Kurone could even react, Akane leaned forward across the threshold. She pressed a quick, loud, theatrical "friendship" kiss right against Kurone's pale cheek, her bare shoulder brushing against Kurone's wrinkled school uniform jacket.
"Since you're already here, why don't you come inside? We're having a movie night here!" Akane added, stepping back and gesturing toward the warm hallway with an aggressive hospitality that felt entirely mocking. "We were just finishing up a horror movie in the living room."
Kurone physically recoiled as if she had been burned by the contact.
I could see a violent shudder ripple down her spine, and she stared directly at the floorboards, her entire body shaking uncontrollably.
The sheer psychological cruelty of Akane's behavior was a physical weight pushing her back onto the porch stairs.
"N-No... it's fine..." Kurone whispered, her voice nothing more than a broken, fractured thread of wind. "It's nothing. I... I have things to do. I have to go back home right now. S-Sorry..."
Kurone didn't even lift her head. She didn't dare to look either of us in the face.
She just turned around blindly, her feet stumbling slightly on the wooden steps of the porch, and began walking rapidly down the dark driveway, disappearing into the cold shadows of the suburban street without looking back a single time.
The moment her silhouette vanished, the friendly, innocent expression on Akane's face completely evaporated.
Then, a triumphant, fiercely satisfied smile took its place.
She turned around, walked back into the kitchen, and carelessly tossed the plastic container onto the table like it was a piece of garbage, entirely unconcerned with the effort Kurone had put into it.
Akane then marched back into the entryway, grabbed the edge of the heavy wooden door, and slammed it shut, turning the brass deadbolt into place with a loud, final click.
After that, she turned to face me. The lone wolf was entirely gone, replaced by the warm, possessive girl from the bedroom.
She didn't waste a single second on words as she immediately closed the distance between us. Her bare feet slid across the floor, and she threw her arms tightly around my neck.
Almost immediately, she pulled my face down and kissed me with a sudden, violent intensity that completely stole the air from my lungs.
I could feel it. That was a deep, bruising kiss of absolute victory, a physical declaration that the past was permanently dead and that she had won.
Her mouth opened under mine, hot and hungry, her nails digging slightly into the skin at the nape of my neck.
When she finally pulled back just a fraction of an inch, her golden eyes were burning with a fierce, undisguised heat, her breathing ragged against my lips.
"Let's continue this properly..." she murmured, her voice a low, velvety rasp that vibrated straight to my core. "...In your bed this time. What do you say, ghost boy?"
I looked down into her amber irises, feeling the absolute certainty of her touch, and my arms tightened around her waist, lifting her bare feet completely off the floor.
"I say let's go," I whispered, and I carried her up the stairs into the quiet night.
