Revenge Karma: She Broke Our Childhood Promise, But Her Tomboy Best-friend Saved Me.

Morning Light

And so, as soon as my eyes closed, the morning arrived in an instant, and the very first thing my senses registered at my awakening was the residual warmth.

Not the sterile, artificial heat of a radiator in an empty room, nor was it the cold, unforgiving chill of tangled bedsheets after a restless night spent waiting for a text message that would never arrive. It was a profound, human warmth.

It was the heat of a body that had been pressed against mine just moments before.

I took a slow, deep breath. The pillows and the duvet were steeped in the rich, heavy scent of sandalwood, cedar, and a faint trace of peppermint.

And then, after some instants, I opened my eyes.

The pale, greyish-blue light of early morning was filtering through the gaps in the blinds, casting long, soft shadows across the bedroom floor.

But I felt that something was missing. I was lighter.

So, I turned my head and noticed that the space beside me on the mattress was empty.

For a brief, agonizing fraction of a second, an old, familiar panic seized my throat, and my stomach plummeted.

Was it a dream? Did my mind invent the entire night? Had I imagined the red light, the karaoke room, the tears, the sweat, and the absolute, terrifying vulnerability of Akane Takanashi's touch?

'No, no, no...'

I sat up abruptly, the duvet falling away from my bare chest.

As I moved, my eyes caught something on the pristine white fitted sheet, right where Akane had been lying. It was a small, faint, rust-colored stain, a tiny drop of dried blood.

In that moment, all the panic instantly evaporated, replaced by a wave of profound, overwhelming reverence.

I stared at that small mark. 'So... everything was real...' I thought.

That was the physical, undeniable proof of what she had given me. The untouchable girl had given me a piece of herself that could never be reclaimed, tearing down her own iron-clad walls to meet me in the dark.

I reached out, my fingertips brushing the fabric near the stain. It wasn't a dream.

Then, I heard it.

A muffled sound coming from the ground floor; a soft, rhythmic shuffle of bare feet on hardwood, the distinct, ceramic clink of a coffee mug being set on a counter, and the slight squeak of the kitchen cabinet hinges opening and closing.

Then, a slow, genuine smile spread across my face. I was not alone.

As I swung my legs over the edge of the bed, the cold morning air raised goosebumps on my skin, a stark reminder of the fiery heat we had generated hours before.

I looked around for my clothes and saw that the charcoal-grey turtleneck I had practically ripped off in my desperation was lying in a crumpled heap near the foot of the bed.

I picked it up and pulled it over my head, not even bothering to check if the seams were straight.

Then, I pulled on my jeans, leaving the top button undone, and walked out into the hallway.

The moment I stepped out of the bedroom, I stopped.

The corridor looked... different.

When we had arrived yesterday evening, the hallway had been a depressing monument to my neglect.

Now, the casual sneakers that had been kicked haphazardly against the baseboards were lined up in perfect, parallel pairs, the light spring jacket that had been slung over the dining chair downstairs was now neatly hanging on the coat rack by the door, and the fine layer of dust that had coated the wooden console table was completely gone, the wood gleaming with a fresh polish.

I walked down the stairs, my hand sliding over the banister.

Then, I peeked into the living room.

I saw that the empty water bottles were gone, and my half-finished homework assignments had been neatly stacked into a tidy pile on the corner of the coffee table. Moreover, the sofa cushions had been fluffed and arranged.

While I had been deeply asleep, exhausted from the emotional and physical catharsis of the night, Akane had probably woken up and quietly moved through my house.

She had cleaned and systematically erased the physical manifestations of my depression, transforming my dusty prison back into a home.

'Wow,' that was the only word that I could think of.

I walked toward the archway leading to the kitchen.

The room was bathed in the warm, golden light of the morning sun, and the rich, bitter aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled beautifully with the savory smell of toasting bread and sizzling butter.

Akane was standing at the stove.

She wasn't wearing her combat boots, her cargo pants, or her heavy leather. She was wearing one of my plain, oversized black t-shirts that swallowed her slender frame, with the hem stopping midway down her pale thighs.

Her feet were bare against the cold kitchen tiles. Her dark, jagged hair was an absolute, glorious disaster—a wild jungle of tangled locks falling over her face and shoulders.

It was the most intimately domestic, breathtakingly beautiful sight I had ever witnessed.

She must have heard my quiet footsteps, or perhaps she just sensed the shift in the air, but she didn't turn around immediately, since I saw her shoulders drop slightly, relaxing, with a soft curve appearing on her profile as she smiled.

"Did you sleep well, ghost boy?" she asked. Her voice was incredibly raspy, thick, and heavy with sleep.

"Never better," I replied, my voice equally low, while walking directly to her.

I stepped up close behind her, the front of my chest pressing against her back, and wrapped my arms securely around her waist, pulling her against me. I then rested my chin on her shoulder, burying my face into the crook of her neck, inhaling the intoxicating mix of her natural scent and my own laundry detergent.

Akane let out a soft, contented sigh, leaning back, letting her full weight rest against my chest, with her hands momentarily leaving the frying pan to cover my forearms.

"Thank you," I whispered directly into her messy hair.

"For what?" she asked, her voice barely a breath.

"For everything." I replied.

I felt Akane's hands squeezing my forearms for an instant.

We stayed like that for a long, quiet moment, and the silence in the kitchen wasn't heavy or awkward. It was full, rich, and it felt like coming in from a terrible storm and finally locking the door behind you.

"I made breakfast," she said eventually, giving my arms another gentle squeeze before turning back to the stove. "I don't really know how to cook so well... but I tried. So don't blame me if you'll die poisoned, okay?" She said, with a mocking tone.

"Fine, just remember that my ghost will haunt you forever," I replied, chuckling.

Akane then turned off the burner and stepped aside.

On the small wooden dining table sat two steaming mugs of black coffee, a plate piled with golden-brown toast and softly scrambled eggs, and a small bowl of sliced fruit.

It wasn't a Michelin-star banquet, but looking at it, my chest tightened with an overwhelming wave of affection. It was the most beautiful meal anyone had ever prepared for me.

We sat down at the table. Akane sat opposite me, pulling her bare legs up and crossing them on the chair, the oversized t-shirt slipping dangerously low on one shoulder, revealing the dark ink of a tattoo on her collarbone.

As soon as we were ready, I took a sip of the hot coffee, feeling how strong and perfect it was.

"The house... it looks different," I said, looking at her over the rim of my mug.

Akane paused with a piece of toast halfway to her mouth and looked down at her plate. Then, a faint, dusty pink blush colored her pale cheeks.

"I woke up early, and I couldn't fall back asleep because I can't go back once I open my eyes," she admitted, refusing to meet my eyes. "And... well, you know, I hate messes. It was driving me crazy. So I figured I'd make the place a bit more livable." She picked at her eggs with a fork. "Consider it a 'thank you' for letting me crash in your bed."

I set my mug down, reaching across the small table. I placed my hand over hers, stopping her nervous fidgeting.

"Akane," I said softly, waiting until she finally raised her golden eyes to look at me. "You don't ever have to thank me for that. If anything, I owe you my life, so you don't have to clean my house to earn your place here. Your place is right here, whenever you want it."

Her eyes widened slightly, the gold shimmering in the morning light, and the blush on her cheeks deepened, spreading to the tips of her ears. She quickly turned her hand over, lacing her fingers with mine, squeezing tightly to hide her emotional reaction.

"Yeah, well. Don't get used to it. I'm not your maid, I'm gonna demand for a paycheck the next time," she muttered playfully, though the defensive edge in her voice was entirely gone.

She then used her free hand to point toward the kitchen counter near the fridge. "Besides, since I was already up, I also made two bentos for lunch. Since we're facing the firing squad today, I figured we shouldn't do it on an empty stomach."

I looked over. Two perfectly wrapped bento boxes sat on the counter. She hadn't just thought about the morning; she had planned for our day. She was taking care of me in a way Kurone never even comprehended.

"You're amazing," I said, entirely sincere.

"E-Eat your eggs, Ishikawa," she deflected, though her smile betrayed her.

"Yes, boss, at your orders," I said, teasing her.

We ate the rest of the meal in a comfortable, easy silence since there was no need to fill the air with empty chatter.

Our hands remained on the table, occasionally brushing against each other, fingers lazily intertwining and letting go, maintaining a constant, reassuring physical tether.

When we finished, Akane stood up to clear the plates, and as she walked past the counter, she picked up my smartphone, which I had left charging overnight.

I watched her out of the corner of my eye as I took my last sip of coffee.

She stood there for a few seconds longer than necessary, her golden eyes fixed intensely on the illuminated screen. Her thumb swiped once, quickly, before the screen went dark again. Her expression was completely unreadable, a mask of absolute, chilling focus.

'What is she looking at?' I wondered briefly. But before the thought could fully form, she set the phone face-down on the counter and turned to me, her demeanor instantly shifting back to her relaxed, confident self.

"It's getting late," Akane announced, glancing at the wall clock. "The first bell rings in forty-five minutes."

She walked back to the table, leaning her hands on the back of my chair.

"But... I guess that we could skip for today," she suggested, her voice low and tempting. "We could just stay here and call in sick. Nobody is going to care if we miss homeroom, Shin." She whispered into my ear, nibbling on my earlobe.

I knew what she wanted, and I wanted it too.

I sat back in my chair, looking up at her.

I actually thought about it because the temptation was incredibly strong.

It would be so easy to text the school administration, lock the front door, and crawl back into that warm bed with her. God help me, I wanted that as I recalled every sensation of that night.

We could hide for another day, forget the outside world, ignore the inevitable whispers, the staring eyes, and the fallout of Kurone's shattered ego. We could stay in this bubble of sandalwood and calm forever.

But as I looked at the fierce, beautiful girl standing over me, I felt the blue-white flame in my chest burn with a steady, unyielding heat.

I wasn't a ghost anymore. Ghosts hid in the dark, and I wanted to show everyone that I could live without Kurone.

I shook my head slowly.

"No," I said, my voice resolute. "We're going."

Akane raised a dark eyebrow, a spark of surprised respect lighting up her eyes. "Are you sure? You don't have to push yourself."

"I'm done running, Akane," I said, reaching up to take her hand from the back of the chair. I stood up, pulling her gently toward me until our chests touched. "I hid behind her shadow for seven years, letting the whole school think I was a pathetic, spineless doormat. I want to walk through those gates today to make them see that I'm not her loyal dog anymore."

I looked deep into her eyes. "And I want them to see exactly whose side I'm on."

Akane's breath hitched. The pride in her golden eyes was so bright it was almost blinding.

She reached up, cupping my jaw, and pulled my face down for a fierce, searing kiss.

"Alright then," she whispered against my lips, her predatory smile returning in full force. "Go get dressed for school, ghost boy. I don't want to be late for our own premiere."

And so, I quickly changed into my school outfit and stepped out of my home with Akane.
