At that moment, John's voice cut in again, sharp and angry. "Ward, you're hesitating? How dare you hesitate over something like this? What's there to think about?"
"Mr. Smith is clearly better than Flaherty!"
John's tone grew more aggressive. "What do you mean by hesitating? Are you worried it's inappropriate to speak your mind in front of Mr. Smith? Are you crazy? Got something wrong in that brain of yours?"

"Humph! There's no need to comment on her," Hugo Smith interrupted coolly. "She's the dean, and I'm the vice dean. There's no point comparing us. I admire her, honestly. It's not easy for a woman to rise to her position at such a young age."
He cast a cold glance at Lucien, then turned back to John with a more sympathetic tone. "John, it's a shame. I truly believe in your talent. But with Director Flaherty's stance... my hands are tied."
