Tensura: The 8th Primordial

Chapter 242 11: The Mediator’s Test

The star-black floor of the Walpurgis chamber receded as the central ring sank downward, shifting seamlessly into a subterranean amphitheater encased by massive, reinforced obsidian walls. High above, a shimmering barrier of crimson magicules snapped into place. A multi-layered, isolated barrier designed to contain disaster. Outside the field, the spectator seats were elevated far beyond the barrier's edge, leaving Rimuru standing alone on the polished stone floor across from Guy Crimson.

Loki leaned over the velvet banister of the gallery, tossing a second heavy coin into his hand with a sharp metallic clink. "Remember, no outside interference!" he called down, his tone far too cheerful for a room saturated with enough ambient killing intent to crush an ordinary army. "Guy's rules. If I throw a shield or hand you a potion, you get disqualified. So try not to die, Rimuru!"

From the arena floor, Rimuru looked up and shot Loki a sharp glare, his brow twitching. 'You're taking side bets on my survival and making it sound like a carnival game, you absolute idiot.'

Yet despite the irritation, Rimuru understood the brutal reality of the condition. If Loki stepped in, if Diablo jumped down, or if Shizue threw her flames to save him, the entire test became a farce. Arashi would be dismissed as a nation protected by Loki rather than a power capable of standing on its own. If Rimuru wanted a seat at this table, he had to stand on his own feet.

"Focus, candidate," Guy's voice cut through the air.

He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't drop into a stance. Guy simply took a single, unhurried step forward.

The air didn't just grow heavy. It shattered. A localized wave of physical pressure rushed across the arena floor, cracking the obsidian tiles in a radiating fan. Before Rimuru's eyes could even track the motion, Guy was already in his space, a single bare palm thrusting toward Rimuru's chest with terrifying velocity.

'Fast!'

Rimuru activated Thought Acceleration and drove a concentrated pulse of magicules through his body, launching himself sideways into a translucent blur. The strike missed his ribs by less than a finger's width, the sheer displaced air pressure carving a deep trench into the arena wall fifty metres behind him.

Rimuru pivoted, intending to create distance and let his analytical processing chart Guy's attack vectors, but Guy didn't give him room to breathe.

Without turning his body, Guy's weight shifted mid-motion, his left heel sweeping back in a sharp, fluid arc that anticipated Rimuru's exact evasion trajectory.

[Warning: High-density strike detected. Evasion route compromised.]

Rimuru threw up one arm and flooded his evolved slime body with compressed magicules, trusting his regeneration to repair whatever the kick destroyed. The impact collapsed Rimuru's guard and hurled him across the arena. The kick connected through Rimuru's arm as the limb deformed and split under the force, forcing him to slide backward fifty metres, his boots grinding against stone until he stopped his momentum. His arm knitted itself back together in a fraction of a second, but the shock remained.

Guy had not revealed an Ultimate Skill or unleashed a world-breaking spell. He had simply measured Rimuru's speed, predicted the path of least resistance, and adjusted his strike mid-air with effortless precision.

"You trust the calculation to move you and regeneration to erase the mistake," Guy observed, stepping forward again at a deliberate pace. He held his hands loosely at his sides, his crimson eyes utterly unreadable. "That works on armies. It won't work on me."

In the elevated gallery, Milim had stopped eating entirely. She leaned over the gallery rail with both fists clenched, her pink twintails trembling slightly as she visibly forced herself not to shout advice down to the ring. Frey hooked two fingers into the back of Milim's sleeve, offering a silent reminder before she leaned any farther over the barrier, while Carrion watched in grim silence. Neither former Demon Lord looked surprised by Guy's dominance; they were watching to see how Rimuru would react once brute strength ceased to carry him.

Across the balcony, Dagruel leaned his massive arms against the stone ledge, his deep voice grumbling softly. "The barrier has several layers."

Dino slouched beside him, yawning slightly but keeping his heavy eyelids open. "If the kid thinks he can just outrun him, this is going to be a very short exhibition."

Leon Cromwell folded his arms, his golden eyes cold and analytical. "Rimuru is choosing the most efficient answer to every attack. Guy is waiting until he commits, then changing the question."

"Guy is forcing him to make decisions before he has enough information," Luminous added, her heterochromatic eyes fixed on the ring. "That is where judgment matters more than calculation."

Behind them, Diablo stood erect, his black-and-gold eyes gleaming with unwavering devotion. He did not flinch when Rimuru took the hit. "Lord Rimuru has only begun studying him," Diablo murmured smoothly, his voice flat with confidence. "This setback is insignificant."

Beside him, Shizue watched with a far more grounded, anxious intensity. She knew how Rimuru fought. He was brilliant, adaptable, and possessed endless resources, but under immense pressure, he had a habit of trying to solve everything at once inside his head—searching for the perfect counter rather than trusting his instincts. 'Don't try to out-calculate him, Rimuru-san,' she thought, her fingers tightening around the hilt of her sword. 'He has thousands of years of battle instinct over you.'

Down in the arena, Rimuru took a deep breath, trying to reset his internal rhythm.

[Notice: Analyzing target's movement habits... Pattern profile generated.]

'Great, use the profile to project his next strike!' Rimuru commanded internally.

He lunged forward, using a combination of high-density magicule pulses to launch himself in a zig-zag pattern, throwing out three decoy magicule blasts to obscure Guy's vision. Rimuru aimed a precise, magicule-reinforced strike right at Guy's left shoulder. The exact blind spot indicated by Raphael's instant projection.

Guy didn't even look. He shifted his stance by a fraction of an inch, letting the strike graze empty air, and stepped directly inside Rimuru's guard before the punch could reach full extension.

"You committed before I finished changing the attack," Guy murmured.

Before Raphael could alter the continuous calculation, Guy's fingers lightly tapped Rimuru's chest. The controlled pulse disrupted Rimuru's magicule circulation for a split second, collapsing the reinforcement throughout his body. It wasn't intended to inflict severe damage, but it completely broke Rimuru's balance and sent him crashing heavily onto the stone floor, skidding ten metres across the obsidian.

Rimuru scrambled backward, pushing himself up as his magicule circulation re-stabilized. Deciding to abandon aggressive speed for a moment, he slowed his breathing, refusing to call upon Raphael for an immediate update. He studied Guy directly, searching for subtle shifts in posture, weight distribution or shoulder alignment.

Guy lowered his right hand by a fraction, offering a narrow path toward his ribs.

Rimuru stepped forward to test the opening. The instant his lead foot planted, Guy slid outside it and turned his hips. The attack line vanished. Rimuru killed the punch halfway through rather than drive himself into the hand already waiting for his shoulder.

Guy stood in the middle of the ring, looking down at Rimuru without a trace of fatigue.

"Your first answer failed. No one is coming to rescue you. Show me the second," Guy said.

Only then did Rimuru notice where Guy had driven him. Every retreat had curved toward the same cracked quadrant, leaving the open center behind Guy and the barrier at Rimuru's back. None of the strikes had been random. Guy had been shaping the field while Rimuru focused on surviving each blow.

[Notice: Positional disadvantage confirmed.]

Rimuru swallowed the order to calculate an escape route. 'No. Keep tracking him, but don't choose for me.'

[Confirmed.]

He shifted left without attacking. Guy mirrored him with one quiet step, closing the safest lane while leaving a riskier path open. Rimuru felt the trap before Raphael named it. He changed direction, not to escape, but to see whether Guy would close that route as well.

Guy did.

The information was useful, but the decision still had to belong to Rimuru. For the first time, he understood that Raphael was not the problem; his habit of demanding a perfect answer before acting was.

Rimuru reset his stance and raised his guard once more. He stopped searching for a finishing blow. Instead, he began asking what Guy expected him to prove once victory was no longer possible.

Guy was not merely trying to overpower him with brute force. He was systematically peeling away Rimuru's safety nets. His raw speed, his reliance on analytical calculations, and his trust in passive regeneration. Guy was controlling the pace, the distance, and the rhythm of every exchange.

'He's not just stronger,' Rimuru realized, adjusting his center of gravity. 'He's been doing this for millennia. Trying to out-calculate him or land a decisive defeat on Guy Crimson... that was the wrong objective from the very start.'
