Chapter 241 10: Milim's Nomination
"I nominate Rimuru!"
Milim's voice burst across the chamber like a cannon blast, utterly shattering the quiet residue of the Jistav debate. She leaned forward over the polished stone, her pink twintails swinging wildly as she slammed both palms onto the table, causing several silver goblets to rattle against the obsidian.
"He's super strong, he built an incredible nation out of a forest full of chaotic monsters, and he threw a grand festival with the best food I've ever eaten!" Milim declared, her brilliant blue eyes beaming with unbridled pride. "Plus, he's my best friend! So he gets a seat! It's decided!"
Before the gathered overlords could even process the complete absence of parliamentary procedure in her declaration, Loki leaned back, a light smirk playing on his lips as he casually raised two fingers.
"Seconded," Loki chimed in smoothly, his voice cutting off any attempt by the more bureaucratic Demon Lords to challenge the order of debate. "The motion is on the floor, Guy. Let's hear the objections."
Sitting in the unmarked candidate's chair, Rimuru felt a cold line of sweat slip down his back. 'Milim, please… you're making it sound like you're nominating me for middle school student council.'
Behind him, Diablo's aura flared with quiet, dangerous pride, clearly finding Milim's assessment entirely too conservative, while Shizue maintained a calm, watchful posture, her dark eyes fixed on the center of the room.
Guy Crimson did not look amused, though his crimson eyes glinted with sharp calculation. "A festival and a personal friendship do not constitute sovereign qualifications, Milim. Neither does an endorsement from Loki." Guy turned his gaze toward the former rulers standing behind her. "Frey. Carrion. You were both independent sovereigns before stepping down. Speak to his actual conduct, his governance, and his character."
Frey stepped forward half a pace, her silver wings flaring slightly before folding neatly behind her back. Her voice was cool, precise, and entirely devoid of Milim's theatrical enthusiasm.
"Lord Rimuru's administrative ability has been proven through the formation of Arashi and the alliances he built among several major communities of the Great Jura Forest. He did not achieve order through mindless terror or subjugation. He brought goblins, kijin, lizardmen, high orcs, and other monster communities into a structured, lawful society. Arashi has ministers, working offices, clear rules, and people who follow Lord Rimuru because they trust him, not because they fear him."
Carrion took a heavy step forward, his massive arms remaining folded over his chest as his deep voice boomed across the black stone. "And when that nation was forced to defend its allies, he didn't hide behind diplomatic letters."
"He did not defend his own border," Carrion said, taking full ownership of the battlefield report. "He entered a war threatening an allied human nation and destroyed Falmuth's main army himself. Coleus intelligence shaped the wider operation and ensured the army reached an isolated battlefield, but Rimuru personally accepted responsibility for stopping the invading force. Twenty thousand Falmuth soldiers marched against Blumund. Rimuru Arashi entered that field, chose to carry out the attack himself, and made certain none of them continued forward. He erased Falmuth's expeditionary army, shattered its military credibility, and forced an established kingdom to face the consequences of its own aggression."
Carrion's eyes narrowed slightly, casting a glance toward Luminous. "He used that power decisively when pressed, yet kept the operation strictly focused on the invading army rather than turning Falmuth's aggression into indiscriminate retaliation against civilians. He possesses the stomach to wage total war when necessary and the discipline to stop when the objective is secured."
A quiet stillness fell over the chamber. Systematically dismantling a twenty-thousand-strong human force in a single engagement and forcing an established kingdom to face the consequences carried strategic weight every ruler in the room understood.
"A formidable military action," Leon Cromwell spoke up, his voice smooth, ice-cold, and entirely unyielding.
Leon leaned back, his golden eyes resting on Rimuru with unblinking scrutiny. "Destroying an army proves destructive capacity. Unifying local tribes proves local leadership. Neither proves independent sovereign judgment. Friendship with Milim and an alliance with Loki cannot substitute for personal weight. If a crisis arises that pits his interests against Coleus or the Dragon Faithful, will he act as a sovereign Demon Lord, or merely as a junior client state following Loki's lead?"
Rimuru shifted in his seat, the back of his neck prickling. It was a bizarre, deeply unsettling feeling sitting in a room full of ancient, godlike entities who were actively picking apart his character, his power, and his right to exist as an equal, all while talking right over his head as if he were an exhibit in a museum.
He felt the urge to let Diablo speak or look to Loki for a defensive rebuttal, but he caught himself. He met Leon's icy stare directly.
"Coleus is my ally, not my owner," Rimuru said, his voice quiet but carrying clearly across the stone table. "Milim is my friend, not my shield. When our interests align, I stand beside them freely. When they don't, I answer for Arashi first. I didn't awaken to become someone else's puppet."
Leon's expression did not soften, but he offered the slightest nod. "A proper answer."
Loki casually crossed his legs, resting his chin in his hand. He made no move to defend Rimuru against Leon's point, offering no reassuring speeches or political shields. He sat back like a spectator at a play, letting Rimuru bear the full, unmitigated weight of the room's skepticism.
Luminous Valentine remained silent, her heterochromatic eyes watching Rimuru with calculated detachment. Dagruel gave a slow, neutral rumble in his chest, neither agreeing nor disagreeing, while Dino leaned back with his eyes half-closed, monitoring the tension without taking a side. Whatever their private reasons, none of them was prepared to welcome a new peer without seeing what he was made of.
"No one here raises a formal objection," Guy observed, his voice echoing off the vaulted arches. "Silence, however, is not recognition. The world does not need another ceremonial figurehead who relies on stronger friends to hold his seat."
Guy slowly rose from the presiding chair. The ambient magicules in the chamber did not merely rise; they compressed into a dense, suffocating weight that made the star-black stone beneath their feet hum with suppressed vibration.
"If Rimuru Arashi is to sit at this table as an equal," Guy said, his voice echoing with absolute authority, "the world needs proof that his judgment, adaptability, and sovereign will survive overwhelming pressure. Words and reputation are insufficient. He will face me in a controlled examination inside a sealed arena."
Milim's hands tightened against the table. "Controlled means you are not allowed to kill him."
Guy glanced at her, his crimson gaze steady. "If I intended to kill him, we would not be discussing rules."
"That was not an answer."
"It was the only one you need."
Frey placed one hand on Milim's shoulder before she could climb onto the table. Across the chamber, Luminous examined the crimson barrier magic already gathering along the perimeter of the room.
"The spectators remain outside the barrier," Luminous noted dryly. "No attack leaves the arena, and no outside power enters it."
Guy inclined his head. "Correct. The examination ends when I have seen enough, when Rimuru yields, or when he loses the judgment required of a sovereign. He is not expected to defeat me. He must keep his judgment when every easy option is taken away. If that judgment breaks, the examination ends, and so does his claim."
Guy turned his sharp crimson eyes toward Loki, his tone hardening into a clear boundary. "And this examination will be strictly unassisted. No attendants, no allies, and no foreign intervention. That includes you, Loki."
"I wouldn't dream of ruining the educational experience," Loki replied with a breezy, dismissive wave.
The air in the room grew impossibly cold. Rimuru forced his hands to unclench and rose from his chair to face the Lord of Darkness directly.
"I accept, Guy-san," Rimuru declared, grounding his posture.
Behind him, Shizue's expression tightened with quiet concern, though she held her tongue, while Diablo's lips curled into a subtle, proud smile, treating the proclamation as a mere formal stage for his master's worth.
[Report: Reliable measurement of Guy Crimson's energy parameters remains impossible.]
'A controlled examination against one of the oldest Demon Lords in existence...' Rimuru thought, swallowing hard as the oppressive aura filled the space. 'He's not joking. I'm really stepping into the ring with Guy Crimson.'
Rimuru glanced sideways at Loki, searching for any tactical hint on how to survive what was coming.
Instead, Loki reached into his coat, pulled out a heavy pouch of coin, and tossed it casually onto the obsidian table toward Dino and Dagruel.
"Three to one he lasts five minutes," Loki offered with a bright, cheerful grin. "Who's taking the action?"
