Tensura: The 8th Primordial

Chapter 221 90: Lucifer Versus the Lord of Farce

The double-sealed battlefield no longer resembled any place governed by ordinary law.

The valley floor had melted into black glass, only to be repaired, shattered, zipped together, and broken again. Craters appeared where no attack had landed. Solid sound effects lay scattered among the rocks like discarded stage props, while a frightened metal zipper hid behind a mound of stone and refused to come out.

At the center of it all stood Guy Crimson.

His crimson hair drifted in the pressure radiating from his body, but he made no immediate move to attack. Tenma hung loosely at his side as Prideful King Lucifer examined everything that had happened since Loki fully released Farce.

Guy replayed every exchange.

Tenma had bent because a sword that could cut anything had become the perfect setup for a weapon that failed in the most ridiculous way possible. His shockwave had transformed into the word BOOM because the sound effect had been given priority over the explosion itself. The battlefield had repaired through a zipper because treating broken earth like torn fabric created a cleaner joke than allowing the destruction to remain.

Lucifer separated the energy, timing, intention, and outcome.

The conclusions shifted even as they formed.

Guy's eyes narrowed.

"I understand part of it now," he said.

Thirty paces away, Loki stood with both hands buried in his coat pockets. Violet-and-gold light still flickered behind his eyes, though his breathing had grown heavier beneath the relaxed posture.

"Only part?" Loki asked. "I'm disappointed. You looked so confident five seconds ago."

"Your skill doesn't ignore logic." Guy lifted Tenma and rested the flat of the blade against one shoulder. "It waits for someone to trust logic, then punishes them for it. I expect Tenma to cut, so you make it bend. I expect force to explode, so you turn it into a word and throw it back at me."

His smile slowly widened.

"The more seriously I treat the attack, the stronger the joke becomes."

Loki tilted his head. "Congratulations, professor. You finished the first page."

"Then let's test it."

Guy vanished.

Tenma swept horizontally toward Loki's throat, but this attack was different from those before it. Guy emptied his expression and stripped the movement of every flourish. He refused to imagine Loki bending the blade, changing its shape, or redirecting the strike.

Lucifer held his thoughts in cold neutrality.

'No expectation. No setup.'

Tenma crossed the final distance.

Loki reached into his coat and pulled out a tiny silver whistle.

Guy's eyebrow twitched.

Loki blew.

TWEEEEET!

The sound was shrill enough to offend the battlefield itself. There was no visible spell, no surge of magicules, and no ice beneath Guy's boots.

His footing vanished anyway.

Both feet shot forward as though he had stepped onto the most perfectly polished surface in existence. Tenma missed Loki by less than an inch, and Guy's body spun sideways with a level of exaggerated helplessness that had no place in a battle between Primordials.

His coat flared. One leg kicked upward. His free arm pinwheeled through the air.

Loki appeared behind him holding a giant red boxing glove attached to an accordion spring.

Guy looked over his shoulder.

"Oh, you have got to be—"

CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-THWACK!

The spring launched.

The glove struck Guy squarely in the back.

Its appearance was ridiculous, but the force behind it was not. Hephaestus had forged the prop around compressed gravitational weight, and Farce had given the blow the timing of a perfect slapstick reversal. Guy tore through several folded layers of space before crashing into the inner barrier hard enough to cover its black surface in white cracks.

The entire domain shook.

Loki landed lightly and compressed the spring between his palms until the oversized glove vanished into golden sparks.

"Lesson one," he called. "Emptying your head doesn't help. If you refuse to provide the setup, I'll bring my own."

Guy pulled himself from the crater in the barrier.

His coat had torn across one shoulder, and a thin line of blood ran from the corner of his mouth. He wiped it away with his thumb while Lucifer examined the new exchange.

The whistle had not relied on Guy expecting ice or oil. The slip had worked because he had approached with complete seriousness and Farce had assigned him the role of the victim.

The boxing glove had been a forged object, but its impact had gained strength from the humiliation of the reversal. Loki had transformed Guy's controlled attack into the beginning of a comedy routine and then used the routine to hide a genuinely devastating strike.

Farce did not need Guy to predict the exact joke.

Guy went still.

His eyes shifted from Loki to the abandoned whistle lying on the ground.

"A straight man," he murmured.

Loki's grin faded by the smallest degree.

Guy noticed.

That was enough.

For every absurdity Loki introduced, Guy had reacted as the serious opponent. He questioned the result, denied the logic, and attempted to drag the battle back into rules he understood. His confusion had given Loki's performance contrast. His resistance had helped define who controlled the joke and who suffered beneath it.

Guy had spent the entire exchange standing in the correct place for Loki's punchline.

The solution was not to destroy the stage.

It was to step onto it.

His shoulders relaxed.

Tenma lowered.

Then Guy's face transformed into an expression of exaggerated horror. He threw his arms wide and staggered backward, staring at Loki as though he had just encountered the greatest terror in creation.

"Oh, no!" Guy cried. "The mighty Lord of Farce has defeated my understanding of reality! Whatever shall I do?"

Loki stared at him.

"Guy."

Guy placed one hand dramatically against his forehead. "How could a poor, helpless Primordial survive such overwhelming comedy?"

"Don't."

Guy grinned.

Then he ran.

He did not move with the flawless, silent speed he had displayed throughout the duel. His legs blurred into spinning wheels, kicking up an enormous cloud of dust despite the floor being made of melted glass.

Loki's eyes widened.

"You cannot be serious."

Hephaestus reacted to the approaching threat. A massive black anvil appeared above Guy and dropped with enough weight to drive him through the floor of the pocket dimension.

Guy looked up.

His eyes bulged comically.

From inside one sleeve, he produced a tiny black umbrella and opened it above his head.

The anvil struck.

THUMP!

The umbrella bent nearly in half, its thin handle wobbling beneath the impossible weight. Guy remained completely unharmed beneath it, one hand casually resting against his hip.

Loki's mouth fell open.

Guy peeked around the umbrella. "Were you trying to hit me with this?"

Before Loki could answer, Guy folded the umbrella, caught the falling anvil in one hand, and spun around with a flourish far too wide to be useful in any real fighting style.

"Catch!"

He hurled it.

The anvil crossed the battlefield like a black meteor. It carried its original forged mass, the force Guy had added, and the absurd certainty that Loki should now be struck by his own prop.

Loki stopped smiling.

He raised both hands and folded the space in front of him. The anvil vanished into a narrow sub-dimensional pocket an instant before reaching his chest.

A heavy detonation sounded from somewhere beyond the sealed battlefield.

The feedback drove Loki back three steps.

He lowered his hands and stared at Guy.

Guy stood with his arms folded, looking unbearably pleased with himself.

"You joined the bit," Loki said.

"Why should you have all the fun?"

"That was my anvil."

"You threw it away."

"I dropped it on you."

"And I returned it. Very considerate of me."

Loki and Guy faced each other through the remains of the dust cloud.

Farce still surrounded Loki, but the authority no longer treated Guy as a passive target. The tiny stars, impossible props, and shifting colors hesitated around him, uncertain whether he was the victim of the scene or another performer helping shape it.

Lucifer could not fully copy Farce. The authority belonged to Loki's soul, his instincts, and the Manas protecting him. Guy could not simply reproduce its absurdity as he had borrowed principles from Loki's weapons.

He did not need to.

By accepting the joke, he could interfere with its rhythm.

Loki slowly lowered his hands.

"Oh, you think you're funny now?"

Guy drew Tenma with an exaggerated flourish. The sword emerged from its sheath twice as long as before, stretched like a crimson ribbon, then snapped back to its proper size.

Both men paused.

Guy looked at the sword.

Loki looked at Guy.

Then they burst out laughing.

Their laughter rolled through the sealed domain as they attacked.

Tenma descended. Loki pulled a painted doorway from nowhere and held it in front of himself. Guy cut through it, only to emerge from a second door behind Loki and kick him across the battlefield.

Loki recovered in midair, summoned a row of floating drums, and struck them one after another. Each beat became a physical shockwave. Guy ran across the waves like stairs, reached the final drum, and drove Tenma through it.

The drum exploded into a flock of black birds.

The birds circled Loki, formed the shape of a fist, and struck him into the ground.

Loki answered by pulling the crater shut around himself like a blanket, disappearing beneath the stone. A hand emerged behind Guy and tapped his shoulder.

Guy turned.

A cream pie struck him in the face with enough force to fracture space.

Every prop carried enough power to kill awakened Demon Lords. Every ridiculous reversal concealed precise attacks aimed at the body, soul, or authority beneath it. Guy and Loki laughed while trading blows that would have erased weaker beings before they understood they had been hit.

Loki tore a strip from the air and cracked it like a whip. Guy caught it, pulled, and dragged the entire horizon toward himself. Loki released the strip before the distorted world could crush him, then drove a Farce-coated fist into Guy's jaw.

Guy answered with Tenma's hilt against Loki's ribs.

Both were hurled apart.

They landed at opposite ends of the ruined battlefield, breathing harder now.
