Chapter 225: broken howl inside me
RAMON’s POV
I moved closer through the trees. The branches scratched at my cloak. The night air felt cold against my skin. Every step stayed quiet. I kept low. My eyes never left the house.
I still suspected Ivy. Fenrins had taken too much from us already. If he had pulled her in with his sons or his lies I would tear the place apart. My wolf pushed hard inside me. He wanted blood. I held him back. Not yet. I needed to see first.
The moon hung low. Its light cut through the leaves in thin lines. I stopped behind a thick trunk. The bark felt rough under my hands. I breathed slowly. My heart beat steady but hard. The house sat quiet ahead. Lights glowed soft in some windows.
I watched the shadows move inside. Ivy passed by one window. She looked free. Safe. That eased something tight in my chest. But the questions came right after.
Why here? Why did Fenrins let her walk like she belonged? What deal had she made?
I searched every window again.
Maybe the guard had been wrong. Maybe Ivy was only visiting.
Maybe I had ridden all this way for nothing.
Then my wolf lifted his head.
Someone is here.
I frowned.
The strange pull in my chest returned. Quiet. Warm. Almost comforting.
It wasn’t coming from Ivy. It came from somewhere deeper inside the house.
I crept forward again. A guard stood near the side path. I waited until he turned away. Then I slipped past. My boots made almost no sound on the wet ground. The scent of pine and damp earth filled my nose. I stopped near the garden wall.
The stones felt cold when I pressed against them. I looked over. The garden stretched out under the moonlight. Flowers grew wild along the edges. The air smelled sweeter here. I stayed hidden. My eyes scanned every corner.
Nothing moved at first.
The garden looked peaceful. Too peaceful.
I almost turned away.
Then the back door opened.
Then she stepped into view.
Sonia walked slowly along the stone path. Ivy moved beside her. They talked quietly. I could not hear the words but I saw the way Sonia smiled. She looked beautiful. Radiant. Even in simple clothes the light caught her skin and made it glow. Her hair fell loose over her shoulders.
The moon touched it and turned it soft silver. My chest tightened.
A smile crossed my face for the first time in weeks. Small. Unexpectedly. I had forgotten how it felt to see her like this. Free. Alive. My wolf stirred gently. He remembered her scent. Her touch. The way she had looked at me once.
I remembered the first time she laughed because of me.
The way she rolled her eyes whenever I acted stubborn.
The nights we sat beneath the stars without saying much.
Back then, I thought we’d have forever.
I had been a fool.
I could not look away. I stayed pressed against the wall. My hands gripped the stone until my fingers hurt. She moved closer to the flowers. Her hand brushed one bloom.
The smile stayed on her lips. Ivy said something. Sonia laughed softly. The sound reached me across the garden. It cracked something open in my chest. Warm. Painful.
I whispered her name without thinking. "Sonia."
She reached down absentmindedly and smoothed a hand over the front of her dress.
I frowned.
My eyes followed the movement.
Then...I saw it.
She turned sideways. The light from the house fell full on her. Her belly showed clearly under the dress. Heavy. Round. My breath caught hard. Shock hit me first. Cold. Sharp.
Then jealousy came fast. Hot like fire in my veins. Who was the father? The question burned. Did she give herself to someone else? Did Fenrins force her? Or did she choose?
The pain followed right after. Deep. Twisting. I had pushed her away. I had hurt her. Now she carried life that might not be mine. My hands shook against the stone. I wanted to climb the wall. To run to her. To demand answers.
No.
My mind refused to believe what my eyes were seeing.
I looked again.
Her belly was unmistakable. Round.
Full.
She was carrying a child.
I stayed hidden. My wolf howled inside me. He knew her. He wanted her. I held him back. My breath came rough. I watched her laugh again at something Ivy said.
The sound carried soft on the wind. It cracked me open wider. Yearning filled the space. I wanted to hold her. To touch the belly that carried new life.
To tell her I was sorry for every cruel word. For every time I let my hate for her father blind me. Self-loathing came next. I had done this. I had driven her here. To this place. To this life without me.
Sonia stopped near a bench. She placed one hand on her belly. The movement looked natural. Protective. My chest hurt worse. Who touched her? Who made her smile like that now? The jealousy burned hotter. I imagined another man’s hands on her. Another man’s child inside her.
The thought made my wolf snarl. I pressed my forehead against the cold stone. I could not look away. She looked radiant. Beautiful. Even with the changes. Even with the life growing in her.
I whispered her name again. "Sonia."
Ivy said something else. Sonia laughed once more. The sound reached me clearly. It cracked the last piece open. I stayed hidden in the shadows. My hands stayed pressed to the wall. The stone bit into my skin. I watched her. I could not stop.
The pull in my chest grew stronger. It wasn’t only pulling me toward Sonia anymore.
It pulled toward the child she carried.
My wolf paced restlessly.
Confused.
Drawn.
Like he recognized something my mind couldn’t understand.
My wolf stirred violently. He knew. He wanted to run to her. I held him back. Not yet. I needed to understand. I needed to know whose child she carried. The jealousy and pain mixed until I could hardly breathe.
She hadn’t left because she stopped loving me.
She left because I gave her no reason to stay.
Every cruel word. Every accusation. Every moment I chose my anger over her.
They all came back at once.
Sonia looked peaceful. Safe. I stayed in the dark. Watching. Yearning. The questions burned hotter. But one thing stayed clear. I had lost her. And the child she carried might not be mine. The thought tore at me. I wanted to call her name.
I wanted her to look at me just once. To tell me I wasn’t too late. But I stayed where I was.
Hidden behind stone and shadows.
Watching the life I thought I’d lost.
Sonia turned toward the house.
Ivy rested a hand against her back as they walked inside together.
The door closed behind them.
I was left alone in the shadows.
My hands were still pressed against the cold stone. I couldn’t feel them anymore. My eyes stayed fixed on the empty garden.
My wolf let out a long, broken howl inside me.
I came here looking for Ivy.
Instead...I found the woman I still loved.
And the child that might belong to another man.
For the first time in years...I didn’t know how to breathe.
