Chapter 215 - 4th Summon
Nathan stood completely alone in the ruins of the Origin.
The Shepherd was gone. The heavy, black throne was nothing but dust blowing in the dead wind. The World was finally silent. Nathan looked down at his own hands—the hands that gripped Moonlight, the hands that fired the final arrow, the hands that now carried the raw, thrumming power of the Overlord. The new magic was a warm, steady fire inside his chest. It was just sitting there, waiting for him.
He heard fast, heavy footsteps crunching in the ash.
"NATHAN!"
Mirko crashed into him a second later. She was back in her tall, human form, and she wrapped her arms around his neck with enough C-Rank force to actually knock him back a step. She buried her face in his shoulder. Her pink eyes were wet with tears she was absolutely never going to admit to crying.
"You just disappeared!" Mirko choked out, holding him tighter. "The light swallowed you... we couldn’t feel the link... we thought you were dead!"
"I’m here," Nathan said softly, wrapping his arms around her. "I’m right here."
Kuro melted out of the shadows right next to them. Her dark eyes scanned him up and down, reading the changes instantly. ’You are completely different,’ she said through their link, her mental voice quiet and awed. ’Your mana signature... it is massive.’
Shiro landed lightly on the ash behind them, her golden wings folding away. "The Young Lord..." she whispered, her eyes wide. "You have grown."
The rest of the team hurried through the ruins and gathered around them. Garrett still had Volcan gripped tightly in his massive hands. Dillon had Cloudy coiled nervously around his neck. Elise was leaning on her staff, her Glacial Crown dim but still in one piece. Smithy trailed behind, heavily leaning on his Void Eel.
"What the hell happened to you?" Garrett asked, breathing hard. "The floor exploded, and that pale light just ate you. We couldn’t get to you. We thought the Shepherd pulled you under."
"The Shepherd is dead," Nathan said, gently stepping back from Mirko. "I killed him. But right before he died... he showed me something. He showed me his past. His whole life."
The party traded confused looks.
"His past?" Elise asked, stepping closer. "Why?"
Nathan went quiet for a second. He thought about the vision. The tired, broken man who used to be just like him. A transmigrator. A bullied kid with a backpack. A hero who tried to save his new world and completely failed, turning into a monster out of pure grief.
But that was a secret he couldn’t share. The truth about the Babel system. The multiverse. The Lords who ate planets for fuel. It was way too much, and it was way too soon. If the Shepherd’s tragic life had taught Nathan anything, it was that having all the answers could drive a person insane.
"He was a hero once," Nathan said carefully. "He tried to save his world from the monsters, and he failed. He lost everything. He became... this." Nathan gestured to the dead, grey ruins around them. "He gave me a gift before his body turned to ash. He gave me a piece of his power."
"What kind of power?" Dillon asked, raising an eyebrow.
Nathan held up his right hand. A brilliant, dense silver light flared around his fingers. It didn’t just glow; it hummed with raw, terrifying pressure. "S-Rank aptitude. I don’t fully understand how to use it all yet. But I can feel it. It’s real."
The entire party just stared at him. The silence was deafening.
"S-Rank?" Garrett’s voice was hoarse. He lowered his heavy mace to the ground. "That’s... that is literally impossible, kid. You were an F-Rank. Then you jumped to D-Rank. Then B-Rank. And now you’re an S-Rank? In one single day?"
"It was the Shepherd’s dying gift," Nathan said, keeping his face totally calm. "His essence. His leftover magic. He wanted me to have it."
Smithy stared at him with sharp, calculating eyes. "What else did he give you?"
Nathan met the ex-assassin’s gaze. Smithy wasn’t stupid. He used to be a top Court operative. He had spent years studying the Shepherd’s magic. Smithy knew Nathan was holding something back. But Nathan couldn’t tell him the truth—not until he figured out how to use the Overlord class himself.
"Just the magical aptitude," Nathan lied smoothly. "And some sad memories. Nothing that changes what we need to do today."
Smithy stared at him for a long, tense moment. Then, he gave a slow nod. "If you say so, Boss."
The team gathered in the center of the ruined throne room.
The Origin World was already starting to change. The suffocating pitch-black sky was slowly turning a lighter shade of grey. The dead, cracked ground felt a little softer. The World was finally healing. The Shepherd’s toxic rot was evaporating into the wind.
"We need to go home," Elise said, looking around. "The TCA needs to know that it’s over."
Nathan nodded. "We will. But first, there’s something I need to check."
He opened his system interface. The blue screens from the Shepherd’s death were still hovering in the corner of his vision. But tucked right under the S-Rank notification was a new message he hadn’t fully read yet.
[Ding! Sub-Class Unlocked: Overlord — The ability to wield skills from all classes. Scales with level and magical power.]
Nathan just stared at the glowing text. The Overlord. It was the exact same class the Shepherd had used to conquer his world. The ultimate power. And it was sitting right there in his menu. He closed the interface with a quick swipe of his hand. It was too dangerous to talk about right now.
"Alright," Nathan said, turning back to his family. "Let’s go."
The portal appeared in front of them—a shimmering, stable gate of clean white light. The party stepped through together, and the dead ruins of the Origin faded away behind them.
They stepped out into the rocky dirt of the ravine.
The sky above them was a bright, piercing blue. The morning sun was incredibly warm against their cold skin. The air smelled like dry dirt and pine trees. The world was still here. It was still alive. It was still worth fighting for.
Valerie, Helena, and Vex were waiting for them at the top of the ridge.
"You’re all alive," Valerie breathed out. Her voice was steady, but she was wiping her eyes. "We’ve been monitoring the global scanners. The massive mana fluctuations just completely stopped. All the corrupted Worlds are starting to heal themselves. The TCA director is literally calling it a miracle."
"It isn’t a miracle," Nathan said, climbing up the dirt path. "The Shepherd is dead. The Cleansing is over. The Tower Worlds are finally free."
Valerie nodded slowly, a huge smile breaking across her face. Then she stopped. She looked at Nathan—really looked at him. "Cross... you feel different. Your mana signature is off the charts."
"I’m an S-Rank now," Nathan said casually. "It’s a very long story."
Valerie’s jaw dropped. "S-Rank? That’s completely—"
"Impossible?" Nathan gave a tired, knowing smile. "Yeah. I’ve heard that before."
Helena stepped forward, frantically typing on her datapad. "The TCA is going to want a massive, detailed report on this. But for right now... just welcome home, everyone."
Vex pushed past them and crossed her muscular arms, glaring at the party. "My custom equipment better be perfectly intact."
"It is," Nathan said. "Mostly."
Vex’s red eyes narrowed. "Mostly?"
"Mostly."
Vex let out a heavy, irritated sigh. But she was smiling, too.
An hour later, Nathan finally walked through the front door of their apartment.
Lucy was waiting for him. She was sitting quietly on the edge of the couch, holding her knees to her chest. When the door clicked shut, she didn’t say a single word. She just jumped off the cushions, ran across the room, and wrapped her arms around him as hard as she could.
"I made toast," she mumbled into his jacket. "The unburned kind."
Nathan dropped his bags, knelt down, and hugged her tight. "I know, kid. I know."
They sat together at the small kitchen table. The toast was perfectly golden brown. The apartment was warm and smelled like butter. Outside the window, the normal traffic of the city hummed along. It was quiet. It was peaceful. It was completely normal.
"I was really scared," Lucy said quietly, staring at her plate. "When you didn’t come back right away... I thought..."
"I’m right here," Nathan said, reaching across the table to squeeze her hand. "I’m not going anywhere."
Lucy gave a firm nod. She didn’t cry. She was way too brave for that. But she held his hand the entire time they ate, and she flatly refused to let go.
Late that night, Nathan sat alone on the flat roof of the guild hall.
The sky was clear, and the stars were shining brightly. Down below, the capital city glittered with neon lights and streetlamps. He heard soft footsteps behind him. Elise walked over and sat down right beside him. Her silver hair caught the starlight.
She was very quiet. She had been quiet ever since they walked out of the Origin. Nathan knew she wanted to ask a hundred questions. He knew she was smart enough to figure out that he was hiding something huge.
But she didn’t push him. She just sat close so their shoulders touched.
"We did it," Elise said softly, looking out at the skyline. "We actually did it."
"We did something," Nathan agreed. "But it isn’t over."
Elise turned her head to look at him. "What do you mean?"
Nathan was quiet for a long moment. He thought about the Shepherd’s terrifying vision. The Lords. The Babel system eating dimensions like cheap snacks. He desperately wanted to tell her. He wanted to tell all of them. But he just couldn’t risk it yet.
"There is a lot more going on out there than we know about," Nathan said carefully. "The Towers, the Shepherd, the system... it’s all connected to something bigger. We stopped a massive threat today. But there are other things out there in the dark."
Elise didn’t look scared. She just reached over and laced her fingers through his. "Then we face them together. Just like we always have."
Nathan looked at her. Her blue eyes were warm and totally fearless. He looked back out at the city they had just saved. "Together," he agreed.
They sat in comfortable silence, watching the stars drift overhead. The night wind was calm. The world was finally safe. And for the first time in a very, very long time, Nathan actually felt something like peace.
Then, a sharp, sudden noise rang in his head.
PING.
His system interface violently flared to life in the dark.
[Ding! Conditions met!]
[Hidden requirements for the 4th Summon have been accomplished.]
[Summon Y/N?]
Nathan just stared at the glowing blue box. His heart completely stopped in his chest.
The 4th summon. With everything that had happened with the Shepherd, he had completely forgotten that the Bunny Girl System had open slots. The hidden conditions, whatever they were, were finally met. The System was asking him right now.
He glanced over at Elise. She was still peacefully watching the stars, totally unaware of the glowing blue screen hovering right in front of his face. He looked down at the city. He looked at the guild hall. He looked at the world he had fought so brutally hard to protect.
Then he looked back at the glowing blue text.
[Summon Y/N?]
He raised his hand. His finger hovered over the interface.
Yes.
He pressed the glowing button.
[Ding! Summoning initiated. Please stand by.]
[Ding! Summoning complete. New Bunny Girl acquired.]
[Ding! Summon slots: 4/5.]
Nathan felt a massive wave of sudden heat at his back. The familiar, blinding light of a summoning circle was burning itself right into the concrete of the roof behind him. He could feel the heavy, undeniable presence of a brand-new soul stepping into the world. A new partner.
Nathan slowly turned around.
And there she was.
