Chapter 102: Step 102 to Greatness: Dealing With Apocalypse Is Easier Than Dealing With Goons
Adrian wasn’t having any of it. He grabbed Gina by the shoulders and pinned her against the wall of the alley. His eyes were akin to daggers staring at her.
"Don’t mess with me," he warned her. "If you think I won’t do anything to you just because you’re a girl, you’re mistaken. Now get lost before I lose my crap."
"Are you done?" she asked.
Adrian was taken by surprise. Instead of looking scared or intimidated, Gina smirked. The girl was trouble. He knew it and let her go, intending to stay out of her way.
Given how the world had changed, he did not want to mess with people now. At least, not until the apocalypse arrived.
Unfortunately, Gina had a different idea. As Adrian turned to move, she turned the tables on him. With a swift leg sweep, she knocked him off his feet and slammed him onto the ground.
He hit the concrete, and before he could get up, Gina straddled him, her hands pinning his arms to the ground.
"You need to let go of your habit of underestimating others," she smiled, settling comfortably on Adrian’s waist. "If you had, you might have realized I’m better than all those jerks you just defeated."
Adrian was a bit taken aback. Not because she took him down by surprise, but because her strength did not match her figure. It was akin to the grip Tsukika had shown on the Savage Earth.
Before he could ask her about it, the thugs on the ground stirred, nursing their injuries.
Gina saw them and rolled her eyes. The boss, looking defeated, hesitated. He opened his mouth to say something, but Gina cut him off sharply.
"Get lost, you pig bastard!" she snarled. "Get out, all of you, or else!"
The gangsters bowed quickly and rushed out without a second complaint. Gina then turned her attention back to Adrian and her smile returned.
"I’m sorry for the nuisance. I tried to stop them from entering your place, but it was a bit too late," she explained, letting go of his hand. "Don’t worry, I will compensate you—"
As soon as his hands were free, Adrian pushed himself off the ground. Just like that, their roles were reversed, and he was the one in control.
"Sorry, I already have too much on my plate," Adrian scoffed. "You can look for someone else to play with."
"Aw, don’t be such a spoilsport." She leaned closer, her breath warm against his ear. "Obviously, it won’t be for free. You’ll make money. Or anything else you might want from me."
Intending to take advantage of the situation, she pressed her body against his, her breath hot on his skin.
"I can give you things," she whispered. "Things you never even dreamed of. Things no one else would do for you."
Before Adrian could say anything, Gina leaned even closer and kissed him deeply. Her tongue explored his mouth. Not stopping there, she got hold of his hand and placed it on her back, letting him wander around and experience what was in store for him.
When she finally pulled away, her eyes sparkled with desire as she licked her lips. As for Adrian, he was too shocked to respond. None of his ancestors had prepared him for dealing with a vixen who knew exactly how beautiful she was and how to use it.
"Consider that my apology for putting you in a tough spot," she said. "And know that I’d be happy to reward you in the same way if you choose to return to me."
Adrian’s mind snapped back to reality. He pushed Gina off, his face burning with anger and embarrassment at what happened.
"You disgust me," he said, getting to his feet. "Don’t ever show your face to me again!"
Instead of being taken aback at the rejection, Gina smiled, undeterred in her flirty ways as she got up as well.
"Is that the way to treat your ex?" she asked sweetly. Adrian ignored her and was about to leave when she spoke again. "Oh, by the way, how’s your stepfather’s business doing? I heard he’s in terrible debt."
Adrian froze in his tracks. The debt was a secret that only his stepfather should know about, especially at this point in time. Adrian himself only found out about it much later, when everything fell apart. But Gina already knew about it?
"How do you know about that?" he asked.
Gina smiled, knowing Adrian had taken the bait. Still, she acted innocent as she walked up to him.
"I have ears everywhere," she said, running her finger playfully across his chest. "Be mine again and I can help you with that."
She continued after gauging Adrian’s response. "As long as you agree to my conditions, your family will only have to pay the principal amount your stepfather took from the loan sharks. If you do a good job, I can even work something out so they won’t have to pay a single penny to anyone."
Upon hearing her offer, Adrian sighed. He did not know how Gina was in this world, but his disgust towards her remained the same, regardless. As for the money, he had more than enough to pay all the debts of his family. Hence, she, along with her offer, was of no use to him.
That’s why he didn’t bother replying and rushed towards his house, only to see a scene of chaos before him.
The garden was trashed, with plants uprooted and decorations broken to pieces. It looked like a storm had passed through, destroying everything in its way.
What the hell...
He hurried inside, his heart sinking further. The living room was no better. All the furniture was overturned or ripped apart, and the walls were defaced with graffiti that made no sense.
He realized it wasn’t the time to get lost in thoughts and rushed to look for his family.
"Mom? Dad?" he called out, heading inside.
A moment later, he found his mother sitting on the couch, tears streaming down her face. Adrian rushed to her, wrapping his arms around her in a comforting hug. She looked up as he approached, her eyes red and swollen from crying.
"It’s okay, Mom. I’m here now," he whispered, trying to console her.
"Look at what they did..." Yeji clung to him, sobbing.
"I’ll call the police," Adrian decided, reaching for his phone.
Just as he was about to dial, his father, Mark, limped into the room. He was hurt, bleeding from several places, and looking exhausted.
"Don’t bother with the police, Adrian," Mark said as Adrian rushed to help him.
After all, he was a shitty father, but his father nonetheless. He couldn’t just see him all beat up and not do a thing about it.
"Dad, what happened? Who did this to you?" Adrian asked.
Mark sighed and sank into a chair. He had been hiding everything from his family, thinking he was protecting them. But it had all backfired. Mark realized that by keeping them in the dark, he was only protecting his ego, not his family.
"It’s time to tell you everything," Mark said, wincing in pain. "It’s because of the loans. The business has been failing, and I had to borrow money from some very dangerous people since the banks were no help."
He continued, "I tried to arrange for more funds to pay them off, but on my way back, the goons jumped me. They beat me and threatened to do much worse if I didn’t pay them back."
"Why didn’t you tell us about this sooner?" Yeji gasped, covering her mouth in horror. "We could have thought of something together..."
"I didn’t want to worry you," Mark said, staring towards the floor. "But they knew where we live and did this."
"But why can’t we call the police? They should be able to help us—" Yeji, still holding onto Adrian, looked at her husband with fear.
"Mom, even if we call the police, they won’t help us." Adrian knew the answer and shook his head. "The loan sharks have connections. They’ve probably paid off the cops. We’d only get into more trouble if we tried to fight back that way."
Yeji’s tears started anew, and Adrian felt a pang of helplessness. But he pushed past those thoughts. He had to be strong for them.
Despite that, he wanted to fight back, to protect his family, but he knew his father was right. Besides, it wasn’t like any of it would matter in a couple of days. It was better to lie low for the time.
"Mom, take Dad and treat his wounds," Adrian said, trying to keep his voice steady. "I’ll clean up the mess."
"Come on, let’s get you cleaned up." Yeji nodded, helping Mark up.
Once they were out of sight, Adrian’s facade of calmness crumbled. He kicked a broken vase, shattering it even more. The frustration and anger he felt were overwhelming his thoughts.
"Piece of shit world," he muttered to himself.
Everything was spiraling out of control. First the apocalypse, then this stuff.
"...I miss that simple world more than ever."
