Chapter 557: An Outing and a Pregnancy
Chapter 557: Chapter 536: An Outing and a Pregnancy
‘This is what a peaceful life is all about,’
Gu’er thought, leaning against Sun Jiaming’s shoulder.
“Gu’er, look, there’s no one around but us. It’s getting a little chilly. Don’t you think we should do something to warm up?”
Sun Jiaming’s voice pulled Gu’er from her sweet reverie.
“What are you talking about? Don’t ruin the mood.”
Gu’er shot him a glare.
“A place this nice? It’d be a waste not to do something. We’ve been here for a while and haven’t seen a single person. No one’s coming.”
Sun Jiaming nibbled on Gu’er’s ear as he spoke.
At first, Gu’er was hesitant. But seeing how enthusiastic Sun Jiaming was, and considering the beautiful sky and lovely bamboo forest—plus the fact that they were truly alone—she didn’t refuse.
The two shared a passionate encounter there in the bamboo forest. The feeling was completely different from being at home, carrying a strange, thrilling excitement.
Sweat beaded on their skin, and as the wind picked up again, they both felt a chill.
By the time they came down the mountain, it was already noon. They found a nearby restaurant and shared a couple of drinks.
In the afternoon, Gu’er and Sun Jiaming went for a boat ride, taking in the beauty and grandeur of the river.
They also ate dinner out. Afterward, instead of heading straight home, Sun Jiaming found a place and took Gu’er dancing.
Gu’er had never set foot in a dance hall in either of her two lives; she had no idea how to dance.
Sun Jiaming didn’t know how either. The two of them clumsily tried to learn, with Gu’er stepping on Sun Jiaming’s feet one moment and Sun Jiaming stepping on hers the next. But they had a wonderful time.
Leaving the dance hall, Sun Jiaming and Gu’er didn’t take a car. They walked home step by step, hand in hand, nestled close together.
The moonlight stretched their shadows long before them, just as their happiness seemed to stretch on and on.
It was late by the time they got home. Seeing Jiji fast asleep in his little bed, Gu’er gently kissed her son’s forehead. Today had been a wonderful day with Sun Jiaming, but tomorrow, she would be a mother again and would spend more time with Jiji. Still, she wouldn’t forget she was also a wife. In the future, when she had time, she would go on outings with Sun Jiaming, just like today.
In the blink of an eye, the New Year arrived, and with it came good news from Feng Ling: she was pregnant.
When Feng Ling got pregnant, Guan Yicai was overjoyed. Every day at the Sun Family’s home, he would tell Grandma Sun, Grandma Dingzi, and Aunt Zhao all about Feng Ling, a smile never leaving his face. The grandmothers were happy for Feng Ling, too; her suffering had finally given way to happiness.
Meanwhile, Li Zhi and the Li Family were ecstatic. Li Zhi, especially, was so thrilled he wanted to cradle Feng Ling in the palm of his hand, doting on her endlessly. Li Zhi’s parents were also delighted. Their daughter-in-law had only been married into the family for a few months and was already pregnant—it was something they had been hoping for.
Li Zhi’s mother was incredibly good to Feng Ling. She wouldn’t let Feng Ling stay in her own place anymore, saying there was no one to look after her. She brought Feng Ling back to the Li family home, buying her things every day and waiting on her hand and foot, terrified she might feel the slightest bit of discomfort.
Li Ting never got this kind of treatment when she came home. One day, after getting angry at her in-laws, she stormed back to her parents’ house in a foul mood. Seeing how comfortable Feng Ling’s life was made her feel bitter, and she made a few cutting remarks. Feng Ling didn’t say anything back—Li Ting was Li Zhi’s only sister, so she tried to be accommodating. But Li Zhi’s mother wouldn’t stand for it and scolded Li Ting harshly.
Li Ting was furious. When had she ever been treated like this? She had always been her mother’s precious treasure; even her brother didn’t dare to cross her. And now? This sister-in-law shows up—from some backwater village, with her uncouth ways—and her own mother scolds her because of this woman. ‘Will there be any place left for me in this family?’
Her temper flared, and she started arguing with her mother.
It wasn’t that Li Zhi’s mother, Chang Jinlan, didn’t love her own daughter. Of course she did; she had raised her all these years. But ever since Li Ting got married, she would constantly fight with her husband, Fang Zhengcai, and her mother-in-law. Every time they argued, she would run back home and wait for Fang Zhengcai to come pick her up, all the while complaining about this and that.
When Li Ting and Fang Zhengcai were on good terms, she would want to move everything from her family’s home to her in-laws’. The day after she married Fang Zhengcai, she ran back home and demanded that Li Quan pull some strings to get her husband a new job. She claimed his current job was too tiring and insisted Li Quan had to work his connections to at least make him a section chief or something similar. This infuriated Li Quan. He pointed at Li Ting’s nose and told her to go back and ask her in-laws whether they were interested in her or in the Li Family’s ability to arrange jobs for them.
Li Ting, completely clueless, defended her husband. She claimed it was her own idea and that her husband hadn’t said anything of the sort. She told Li Quan not to assume everyone was after the Li Family’s connections, which nearly made him faint from anger.
