The Adopted Cannon Fodder Made a Comeback

Chapter 556: An Outing and a Pregnancy

Chapter 556: Chapter 536: An Outing and a Pregnancy

Marina had a different idea than Gu’er.

“You have a point. Your situation is good, too. I’m thinking of having another baby in a year or so. I’ll have to pay the fine, and I guess after this one, the family planning office will probably drag me in to get my tubes tied.”

‘Gu’er had her own ideas. Even though the government advocated for only one child, not many people truly stuck to that. The wealthy, who could afford the fines, just went ahead and had more. There were also plenty who had children in secret. While Gu’er supported the family planning policy, she thought having a daughter would be wonderful. A son and a daughter would make things feel complete. However, if she did have a second child, she’d probably have to get sterilized, because they wouldn’t want her having any more.’

“Why do they control how many children you can have?”

Marina didn’t understand. The country where she was born had no such regulations; having children was a matter of personal freedom.

Gu’er once again explained the country’s policies to her. Marina didn’t say much. Her take was to have children while she could, and if it truly became impossible, she would cross that bridge when she came to it.

That night, as she lay in bed, Gu’er’s mind began to wander.

“What’s wrong?”

Sun Jiaming asked. He knew Gu’er was tired today, so he hadn’t intended to tire her out. He was surprised to find she was still awake.

“Marina’s pregnant. I was just thinking… ever since Jiji was born, there’s been no news on my end. I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with me.”

Gu’er voiced her concerns. She had used contraception for the first year after Jiji was born, but not after that. Still, she hadn’t gotten pregnant, and she felt it was a little unusual.

“Are you saying your man is useless? Looks like I’ll have to put in more effort.”

Sun Jiaming chuckled and slid his hand inside Gu’er’s clothes.

“You’re impossible! That’s not what I meant. Who said you were useless?”

Gu’er shot him a look, but it lacked any real heat. Instead, it was filled with a seductive charm that instantly stoked the fire of Sun Jiaming’s desire.

As Sun Jiaming entered her, Gu’er felt a sliver of regret. ‘I never should have brought this up with Sun Jiaming.’ She knew better than anyone just how “useless” he was. Except for when she was on her period or utterly exhausted, he wore her out every night—at least once or twice, and on other nights, it was better not to count. Sun Jiaming had taken pity on her today and was going to let her rest, but the topic of children had set him off again. Soon, however, Gu’er couldn’t spare a single thought. Moving to Sun Jiaming’s rhythm, the two of them surrendered to the blissful moment.

Afterward, Sun Jiaming told Gu’er not to put any pressure on herself. When it came to having a baby, if it happened, they’d welcome it. If it didn’t, that was fine too. They already had Jiji, so there was no need for her to get burdened by her thoughts and torment herself over it.

Gu’er felt the same way. It was best to just go with the flow. When and if a child arrived, it was a matter of fate.

And just like that, Gu’er felt her worries ease.

With her worries eased, Gu’er began to plan a day trip for herself and Sun Jiaming. She had promised him they would have some time for just the two of them, and she couldn’t go back on her word. Besides, she also wanted to get away with him—just the two of them, to relax and unwind.

Once she had a plan, Gu’er started making arrangements. She first mentioned it to Grandma, who was very supportive. She told Gu’er not to worry about a thing at home; with so many people around, they would certainly take good care of Jiji.

Cao Qiu didn’t have the slightest objection either. Since her grandson was no longer breastfeeding, it was the perfect opportunity. With Gu’er away, her grandson would be all hers. She was overjoyed, so how could she possibly object? She told Gu’er to just go and have fun with Sun Jiaming; she would hold down the fort at home.

Seeing how supportive everyone was, Gu’er was happy, but she also couldn’t help but feel a little wistful. ‘In other families, parents have no one to help with the baby and have to struggle through it. But here, we have a whole group of people looking after one child. It’s almost as if it makes no difference whether I’m here or not.’

With this thought in mind, Gu’er and Sun Jiaming set out on the appointed day.

Since they only had one day, they couldn’t travel far. The two of them went to Shixiang Mountain. It was a place of verdant hills and clear streams, with beautiful scenery. But people at that time weren’t like they would be in the future, heading out for recreation in their spare time. So, despite its beauty, Shixiang Mountain was usually deserted.

Gu’er and Sun Jiaming walked hand in hand along a small path. The surroundings were perfectly silent, as if they were the only two people in the world.

Gu’er leaned into him, linking her arm with Sun Jiaming’s. ‘I love this quiet, with just the two of us here. I could walk with him like this until the end of time.’

Sun Jiaming felt exactly the same.

“Gu’er, let’s go for a walk in that bamboo forest.”

Sun Jiaming had spotted a grove of bamboo.

There was no one else in the bamboo forest, only the rustling of the wind.

The two of them found a spot and sat down.
