The Boys: Ultimate Multiversal Lifeform

Chapter 191: 191: The Deep's Slowly Rising To The Peak

"Take it slow." Ivan reached out and hit the power button on the computer, ready to see what the hell had gone down in the few days he had been gone.

"Alright, Mr Greevs." The Doppelganger steadied himself a little. "First is the attack on the superhero Stormfront. Vought's locked the whole thing down tight. Full details are in your inbox.

Second, the superhero movie Vought was getting ready to shoot. The whole point was to push the new hero Stormfront.

But with Stormfront's sudden accident, they yanked the plug on filming right away."

"Isn't that normal? What's the problem?"

Ivan opened his email. Sure enough, there was a message from Edgar.

The email ran long. The short version: the criminal terror outfit led by Billy had cooked up this nightmare attack, and in the middle of it they'd done serious damage to Stormfront.

She was still being worked on in emergency care, but the whole mess had to stay under wraps. If regular people found out that Stormfront—the new criminal's worst nightmare—had just gotten jumped by terrorists and was circling the drain, it would hammer Stormfront, every other supe, and Vought's entire brand into the dirt.

People would start thinking supes couldn't even keep themselves alive, never mind anybody else.

Once that talk got rolling, Vought's credibility could get wiped out for good.

The reason Vought's supe business was flying high right now was mostly because the public still worshipped the living shit out of superheroes and honestly believed those bastards were strong enough to keep them safe.

The day they woke up and realized the supes weren't half as tough as the commercials claimed…

You could figure how bad that would be for Vought. Lose the public's trust and trying to get it back is like trying to climb to the moon. That was why Edgar's tone was so frantic. This was already hitting Compound V sales.

"The movie not getting finished isn't the issue. The real problem is someone's been spreading pure poison online saying Stormfront's not only a hardcore Nazi racist bitch, she's also the one who blew up the train.

Those claims aren't even the worst part, since they haven't shown any real proof.

The killer blow is they're straight-up saying Stormfront's already dead, that supes aren't invincible, and that if she's still breathing she should get on stage in front of everyone and show off her powers.

Mr Greevs, you know the drill. I can copy her face, no problem. I can't copy the powers."

"How's the public reaction looking?" Ivan asked, voice flat.

No guessing needed. The ones pushing this shit had to be Billy and his crew. They'd just gotten smarter this time. Maybe the Invisible Man mess had given them a hint that Vought might have a supe who could steal faces. So they were betting hard that even if someone could look exactly like Stormfront, there was zero chance they could pull off the exact same powers.

On the other end of the line the Doppelganger's eyebrows were almost tied in a knot. "It's ugly. People are already asking Vought why the fan meet-and-greet only ran one time before it got cancelled cold. If nothing happened to Stormfront, why is Vought acting like they're sticking their heads in the sand?"

"Got it. Anything else lately?" Ivan stood up, walked to the window, and checked the watch he'd just strapped on. 10:01. Exactly half an hour past when he was supposed to be at work.

"One more thing, about The Deep. Asia just announced they're dumping nuclear wastewater into the ocean. That lit a fire under public opinion worldwide. Everyone's watching. Congress hasn't said a word, and the U.S. government's silence has the civilian environmental groups furious. They've already staged two marches with over three thousand people each.

The Deep jumped in without getting the green light from Vought. President Edgar is not happy and ordered him to shut it all down right now."

"That does sound like something he'd pull."

Ivan Greevs cracked a smile and walked over to the wardrobe, picking out a cream-white suit.

"If I'm not wrong, his popularity's through the roof right now."

"Through the roof doesn't cover it. He's exploding. His name and face are flooding every social media platform. The heat's already spilled overseas. Vought's internal numbers show his support across the states jumped seventy percent. Right now he's sitting second in the Seven, right behind Homelander.

And the gap between them keeps shrinking."

"Looks like somebody's not sleeping tonight."

Ivan meant both Homelander and The Deep, but The Deep was too simple to lose sleep over any of this. So the only one tossing and turning was Homelander.

...

Inside a secret base in New York State, Dr. Vogelbaum, long retired, stepped out of the medical room with a deep frown.

"How is she?" Homelander stood waiting by the door, face blank.

You could tell his mood was pure shit.

He'd put a laser clean through that bastard's chest, yet the body had vanished. Only two possibilities. Either someone got there first and hauled the corpse away, or the fucker never died at all. Homelander leaned hard toward the second one. He'd rather believe the guy crawled off than admit someone could snatch a body right under his nose.

White-haired Dr. Vogelbaum shook his head. "It's not good. She's conscious again and the surface tissue has recovered about seventy percent, but the severed arm shows zero signs of growing back.

Even flooding her with Compound V can't restart the limb. Her healing factor's already been pushed to the absolute limit."

Homelander said nothing. He shoved the medical room door open and walked in.

He stopped beside the bed and looked down at Stormfront's ruined face with something that almost passed for tenderness. He took her hand and spoke soft.

"Why didn't you just hand me those photos earlier? I would've been happy to help."

Stormfront's eyes fluttered open. Her lips moved, but the damaged vocal cords produced nothing.

"I've already put every Vought department on this. We'll know who that bastard is soon enough. Don't worry. If he somehow crawled away alive, I'll kill him again myself. For you."

As he spoke, a pleased little smile crept across Homelander's face.

"Ss… oh!"
