Chapter 270: Ch 269: The only one
"Your show of care is adorable. It almost makes me want to stop all this and have you all for myself. However, I promised to show you the truth, so I will now keep my promise."
The corruption told him, and the scene in front of him continued.
Goddess Aria continued to lose her mind for a whole day, and the other gods eventually called a meeting to deal with her.
They all agreed that she could not keep going on like this, and as a result, Aria was sealed in her space with no way out. It made the goddess sleep for days, and she would have continued to sleep if not for a young voice calling her name.
Someone was urgently calling for her, and that made her open her eyes and look down at the world for the first time.
It was a small child, barely 10 years of age. But his words were clear when he searched for her.
"Goddess Aria, I kept my promise. I will pray to you in this life as well. So please, accept my devotion."
The child told her as he started to build her first temple.
This one follower was doing more for her than anyone else had, so how could she not love this soul? The goddess wanted to do what she could for this young life that saw nothing but her own goodness.
Slowly, she began to gain enough power and broke free of the chains. And the more time she spent watching the kid, the more obsessed she became.
This child was hers. He had remembered her even after reincarnation, and he refused to back down.
Aria wanted to meet this follower face-to-face and talk to him. So, for the first time in her life, Aria made the decision to head to the human world on her own. She took a deep breath and gathered her powers.
It was going to take her years, but she would make it.
So, for the first time in her life, the goddess closed her eyes and gathered her power.
She slept for days and months until she felt ready. And then, she opened her eyes, ready to make the trip to the world where her beloved follower was.
But the second she reached it, she did not see her follower, but his dead corpse lying in front of her.
There were hordes of people gathered around, raising their hands in the air and ready to riot.
"Today, another criminal has been purged. How dare a sinner talk about another goddess when our god is alive and well? We need to purge such filth from our presence. Now, this cursed soul will never be reborn."
Aria felt her breath hitch in anger and sorrow at those words.
"What do you mean he’ll never be reborn? He was all I had."
She whispered, but her words went unheard by everyone else. No one could see her since her presence was so faint. But she did not care about any of this.
The only thing she cared about was this soul that she had lost.
Her anger and sorrow started to get out of control, and it began to affect the people around her. They gasped for breath, not knowing what to do now. And soon, the god of this world sensed her power and came to her.
He noticed Aria clutching the dead body in her arms and let out a sigh.
"Young goddess, why are you back? Please stop tormenting these people-"
"They killed my follower."
Aria’s voice was blank when she replied, but one could immediately tell that something was wrong with her.
The older god noticed as well. But instead of calming her down, he decided he needed to make her see reason.
"Young Goddess Aria, all you lost was a follower. You will lose more of them in the future as well, so there is no need to be this emotional about it. Now, let that body go, and we shall-"
The god started to feel like something was wrong all of a sudden. The air had gotten heavy, and breathing was becoming difficult.
He had a feeling that he needed to be careful with how he handled things right now, or else he would lose a lot.
"Just a follower? I guess for you, it would seem like that. But this kid was more than a follower for me. He was my lifeline, and now he would never be able to come back to my side."
The goddess spoke in a clear voice, but it sent chills down the elder god’s spine.
Still, he had to at least reason with Aria-
"I want him back. His soul and his body. Return them to me, and I will never show my face again. Surely, parting with a single human would not be too much trouble."
Aria asked, no, she almost begged with tears in her eyes. All she needed was this one person in her life, and-
"I am afraid that is not possible. His soul has already disappeared, and I cannot disrupt the nature of my world for the sake of one person. Please return now and-"
"I see. So you are telling me no. I guess if you won’t help me, then I will need to help myself."
Those words were accompanied by Goddess Aria letting loose her powers. Soon, they began to engulf everything around her, including the very world.
"Goddess Aria, what are you doing? Stop it this instant, or else-"
The elder god started to speak, but he suddenly felt like the power was consuming him as well.
He gasped for breath as he tried to stop her, but he suddenly felt short of breath.
"Aria, you...are you trying to eat everything up?"
He asked in disbelief, looking at the goddess with a betrayed look. He could not understand why a sane goddess would do something like this.
But that was his mistake—to assume that Aria was sane. She had lost her sanity a long time ago. And now, she no longer had anything left to live for.
