Chapter 268: Ch 267: The Goddess has changed
[My dear child, listen to me. That goddess you all are serving is a fake. She has powers, but they are all illusions to fool you. All she wants from you is your life force and nothing else. I, on the other hand, will take great care of you. All you have to do is follow me.]
The voice called out to a dozen people that night, and by the time they woke up, they had converted to a new faith.
The influence of this new and merciful god started to spread slowly, and more and more people began to have this dream.
Of course, Aria Solwyn immediately realized what was happening and tried to put a stop to it. But the foreign god was far too powerful and was steadily gaining influence.
He seemed to be an abandoned god who had gained a foothold, but how could Aria Solwyn allow such a thing under her rule?
So she instantly began to take out the people who had fallen for this foreign god.
In her foolishness and arrogance, she did not realize that her actions would come across as tyrannical to her people, and she continued to purge the flame of this new religion before it could take root.
Her temples began to actively seek out the believers of this foreign god and take them out until there were only a handful of people left. And soon, even they were captured and brought in front of the goddess.
She looked haughty on her throne, and her proud eyes looked over the people her priests had caught.
"You all dared to praise a foreign god when you have me to protect this world. Do you have anything to say for yourselves?"
She asked the people gathered at her feet, and for the first time, someone looked at her in defiance.
"You call yourself a goddess, but all you do is harass us all and put us to work. You do not even care about our physical and mental well-being. So tell us, Goddess Aria, what have you done to deserve our prayers? All you have done is cause trouble that only you can fix. We never got a choice in deciding whom we wanted to serve."
The man gathered his courage and yelled, only to be silenced forever as his tongue was cut off.
The loyal follower of the goddess stepped forward and threatened everyone else with his presence. His sword was ready to take out anyone else if they made any noise.
"Oh, looks like my dear guard did not like your answer. Everyone else, you must be even more careful when you answer me. Who knows whom you might anger?"
She gave a warning, but instead of settling the people down, it only made things worse. People who had been standing back until now began to raise their voices at the goddess and her core followers.
"Stop it! This is tyranny. So we cannot even speak up as we want now?"
"Why should we listen to you and revere you? If you are a magnificent goddess, then you don’t need any of our prayers, right?"
"In the end, you are just a fake trying to pass off as real. But real gods do not ask for anything in return. You are not a real god."
Goddess Aria felt shocked as she looked at her followers, who were turning their faces away one by one. And as a result, she started to feel powerless and hopeless at the same time.
"No, I-"
She tried to stop the people from talking negatively about her, but it was of no use. No one wanted to listen to her.
"I-"
She tried reaching out again, but the humans had already turned their heads away.
"Goddess Aria, you reap what you sow. You have decided to discard humanity for your own ambitions, so humanity would do the same to you. We have no need for a goddess like you."
Most of her followers left, causing the goddess to let out a startled sob.
"No! This cannot be! I was just trying to help. I am their goddess, and I deserve to remain here-"
[Come back. You have failed your task, and now, someone else will take over this world I created. Your time to live here is over.]
A divine revelation spoke to her, telling her that her opportunity to gain power was over. And that was what broke Aria.
"No! You cannot do this to me. This is my world, and these are my people! I deserve to be here just as much-"
But as she muttered this, she noticed that even her core followers were starting to look away from her.
"No, don’t leave me-"
She called out, but it was already too late. Those who had vowed to serve her were already gone. Only her loyal guards remained, but even they were wavering as her divine power started to fade.
Kael watched all this with a slightly confused expression. He didn’t feel sorry for her, but rather confused by the fact that even her loyal people had left her all alone.
"The goddess..."
/Got fooled by her instincts. Her people might have appeared to be loyal to her, but that was only because she had her divinity binding them to her. Once that divinity was gone, the humans no longer had a reason to stay beside her./
/In the first place, she was a goddess, and they were humans. The only bond that could be cultivated between them was one of servitude. There was never a way for other emotions to weave their way in./
The corruption sounded sure of this, and Kael had a feeling it was speaking from experience. It was also slowly beginning to become more and more humanoid, and its body was starting to take shape.
"And so, what happened next?"
Kael asked, feeling restless and excited to know the next part. And he was not disappointed when the story continued.
/Well, things unfolded as you would expect them to. The heavens sent a new god for the suffering people. But Goddess Aria refused to go back./
