"I heard that you decided to interfere in the dragons’ community. Do you think that was necessary?"

Lumi looked at the council head, Kristain Han, with a neutral expression.

She knew that this man was not trying to mock her or make fun of her, but she still could not help but feel as if she was being ridiculed, and it irked her.

"Tsk, if you want to laugh at my mess-up, then do so already. I am already annoyed that I lost a large portion of my magic corrupting the dragons, only for it not to matter."

Lumi complained as she smacked her cup against the table. She was showing her frustration so clearly that her partner sighed and put a hand on her shoulder to comfort her.

"I know that times are hard, Lumi. But that is enough about the dragons. What about the other project I handed over to you? How is that coming along?"

Kristain Han asked her in a neutral voice. He was trying his hardest not to offend Lumi, which made her sigh.

"At least that is coming along well. We are almost done with the experiment. Just a little more, and we will be able to use the corruption to break the seal on that ancient deity. And once we have it under control, we will gain the ultimate power to change reality."

Lumi had been promised the throne of this world when she started, and she had come so far that turning back was impossible.

She had used her own body as an experiment in order to get this far, and now this experiment was all she had left to show for it.

"I see. So it is coming along well? Still, I cannot let you do all the hard work. We started this together, and we shall end this together."

Kristain Han told her, and to most people, it would sound like a soft and healthy confession. But Lumi was not so foolish. She could hear the mocking tone underneath Kristain’s words. He was telling her that she would not be able to reap the benefits of this situation alone.

’This bastard! He is trying to show off that he’s superior to me. But I won’t let him have his way.’

For now, she was going to smile, and once she had gathered enough power, she was going to backstab this man and devour his power and authority.

After all, she did not need anything but her corruption. It would show her the new world, and the deity she was about to call forth would make this world hers.

Kael felt his head hurting as he worked. He did not know what was happening to him, but it was making him feel dizzy, and he almost fell face-first onto the ground before pulling himself upright.

"Hey, are you alright?"

Leon asked Kael as soon as he saw the older man lose his balance and almost fall down. But Kael quickly recovered and gestured that Leon did not need to come to him.

"I am fine. I just tripped or something. You should get back to your work without worrying about me."

Kael told Leon, but the concerned look on the younger man’s face did not fade.

"Are you sure? I can still help—"

"I am sure that you do not need to help me. Just help the dragons clear out the obstacles in their habitat. That should be enough for now."

Kael told Leon, but he quickly noticed that everyone else had started to look at him with that strange glint in their eyes as well. It would be for the best if he stepped back for now.

So with a sigh, Kael decided to head toward the resting bench and sat down.

His body sagged in relief he did not even know he needed, and he closed his eyes to enjoy the breeze on his face.

’This feels nice... I just want to keep my eyes closed and not think about a single thing anymore...’

/This does feel nice. But do you have time to be sitting around like this? Are you not going to come and find me?/

The voice startled Kael, and he snapped his eyes open, only to see that there was no one around him. If he had been alone, then who had spoken to him?

"Have I started to lose my mind?"

Kael questioned as he shook his head. But he was sure that was not the case. He was not losing his mind; rather, the corruption had started to gain a consciousness.

But why was it targeting Kael instead of someone else? Surely the Hero would be a better target—

/It’s because you possess an essence of me. It’s dormant inside you, but I can feel it. We are similar in nature. Don’t you feel the same? Don’t you want to question why you can fight against my powers?/

The corruption asked in a teasing voice. It was playing with Kael now, and he gritted his teeth in annoyance and anger.

His common sense told him that it would be best not to think about the corruption and its words. He did not want to fall into its trap and lose himself.

But at the same time, he could tell that the corruption was making too much sense, and it would not be right for Kael to ignore it.

"Are you saying that I am connected to you?"

Kael asked, and the corruption decided to answer him.

/Connected is not the right word I would use. We currently share the same base and principle of existence. You can think of us as having the same source. That’s why I am so interested in you. If you want to know more, then help me break free. And then, I will tell you all about it./

The voice told Kael, and he felt tempted before realizing what he was talking to and pulling himself out of the headspace he was in.

"Do you think I am a fool who would fall for your words? Sorry, but it would be for the best if you found someone else to trick."
