Chapter 213: Scared
Every Denzel in the city smiled.
Denzel didn’t move.
Elena’s hand tightened around his.
The thousands of faces stared down from the windows.
Every face was his.
Different ages.
Different clothes.
Different expressions.
But the eyes were the same.
Watching.
Waiting.
Denzel looked at the nearest building.
One of the copies stepped away from the window.
Then another.
Then dozens.
Doors opened throughout the city.
Footsteps filled the streets.
Denzel felt his instincts telling him to prepare.
He ignored them.
"Why are they all me?"
No answer.
The copies continued walking toward them.
Elena looked around.
"They’re not attacking."
"I noticed."
"They look scared."
Denzel studied them.
She was right.
Some were trembling.
Some looked confused.
Others kept glancing behind themselves.
None looked hostile.
The first copy reached them.
He looked about twenty years old.
Almost identical to Denzel’s current appearance.
He stopped several meters away.
"You’re late."
Denzel frowned.
"I keep hearing that."
The copy looked toward the sky.
"We thought you weren’t coming."
"Who are you?"
The copy hesitated.
"Us."
Denzel glanced at the others.
"That’s not helpful."
The copy lowered his head.
"We don’t have names."
"Why?"
"Because you never gave us any."
Elena stepped forward.
"Then what are you?"
The copy looked at her.
"We’re the ones who remained."
Denzel’s expression hardened.
"Remained after what?"
"The reset."
Denzel went still.
"There was only one reset."
The copy shook his head.
"Not for us."
Denzel looked around the city.
"How many times?"
The copy didn’t answer.
"How many?"
"Three."
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
"Three?"
The copy nodded.
"The first time, you destroyed the world."
"The second?"
"You rebuilt it."
"And the third?"
The copy looked at him.
"You tried to leave."
Denzel felt something twist in his chest.
"Why don’t I remember?"
"Because you weren’t supposed to."
The copy pointed toward the buildings.
"Every time you reset the world, most of reality was overwritten."
"Most?"
"We weren’t."
Elena frowned.
"Why?"
The copy looked at Denzel.
"Because we were outside the boundary."
Denzel remembered the black line.
The first boundary.
The thing that separated one reality from another.
"You survived outside it."
"Yes."
"How?"
The copy smiled bitterly.
"We didn’t."
Denzel stared.
"What?"
"We died."
The words were quiet.
"Every time."
Denzel’s expression changed.
"But we’re standing here."
"No."
The copy touched his chest.
"We are memories that refused to disappear."
Denzel felt the pressure return.
Not power.
Recognition.
He looked at the thousands of copies.
They weren’t people.
Not entirely.
They were remnants.
Fragments of lives he’d erased.
Lives that had somehow remained.
Elena stepped closer to Denzel.
"Can they become real?"
The copy answered.
"We already are."
Denzel looked at him.
"Then why bring me here?"
The copy didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the center of the city.
A tower stood there.
It was taller than every other building.
Denzel hadn’t noticed it before.
Its entire surface was black.
No windows.
No doors.
Just a single white symbol near the top.
A circle.
Broken in half.
Denzel recognized it.
"The boundary."
The copy nodded.
"That’s where we came from."
Denzel started walking.
Elena followed.
The copies moved aside.
None tried to stop them.
The closer they got to the tower, the quieter the city became.
Eventually, even the footsteps behind them disappeared.
Denzel stopped at the entrance.
There was no door.
Only a wall.
He touched it.
The surface rippled.
A voice came from inside.
"Identify yourself."
Denzel frowned.
"Denzel."
"Which one?"
Denzel hesitated.
"Me."
The voice remained silent.
Then:
"Insufficient."
Elena stepped beside him.
"He’s Denzel."
"Which one?"
She frowned.
"The one standing here."
"Insufficient."
Denzel looked at the wall.
"What do you want?"
The answer came immediately.
"Your first memory."
Denzel’s expression changed.
"Which one?"
"The first."
"I don’t have it."
"You do."
Denzel closed his eyes.
Images moved through his mind.
Elena.
The Crown.
The first boundary.
The white space.
The child.
None felt like the first.
Then he remembered the sphere.
A tiny point of light.
The first thought.
The desire to exist.
Denzel placed his hand against the wall.
"I wanted to exist."
The wall opened.
Elena looked at him.
"That worked."
Denzel stepped inside.
"Apparently."
The interior was completely dark.
The wall closed behind them.
Then lights appeared.
Rows of chambers stretched into the distance.
Inside every chamber was a Denzel.
Some slept.
Some sat motionless.
Some stared directly at them.
Elena stopped.
"These aren’t the copies outside."
"No."
Denzel walked closer to the nearest chamber.
The Denzel inside was old.
His hair was white.
His body was thin.
But his eyes were open.
He watched Denzel.
Then smiled.
"You finally made it."
Denzel stared at him.
"Who are you?"
The old Denzel laughed.
"You’re still asking that."
"Yes."
"You."
Denzel sighed.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"Because you keep forgetting."
The old Denzel pressed his hand against the glass.
"Listen carefully."
Denzel approached.
"To what?"
"The world you’re standing in isn’t your creation."
Denzel frowned.
"The figure said it was."
"He lied."
Denzel’s expression hardened.
"Which figure?"
"The first."
The old Denzel’s smile disappeared.
"He always lies."
Elena stepped forward.
"Why?"
"Because he wants you to believe you’re responsible."
Denzel stared.
"Responsible for what?"
The old Denzel pointed upward.
The ceiling disappeared.
Denzel looked into a massive chamber above them.
Something was floating there.
A sphere.
Not the first sphere.
This one was enormous.
Its surface was covered with countless cracks.
Inside it were worlds.
Millions of them.
Denzel recognized some.
Others were completely unfamiliar.
Elena whispered.
"Those are worlds."
The old Denzel nodded.
"Every world you ever created."
Denzel stared.
"They’re still alive?"
"Some."
"What about the others?"
"Waiting."
"For what?"
The old Denzel looked at him.
"For you to decide whether they deserve to exist."
Denzel’s face hardened.
"No."
The old Denzel raised an eyebrow.
"No?"
"I’m not doing this again."
"You don’t understand."
"I understand enough."
Denzel turned away.
"I spent my entire existence deciding which worlds survived."
"You spent your existence running from the decision."
Denzel stopped.
The old Denzel continued.
"You thought refusing to interfere meant you had finally learned."
"I did."
"No."
The old man’s voice was quiet.
"You learned how to stop changing the past."
Denzel looked at him.
"But you haven’t learned how to face the consequences."
Silence.
Elena looked between them.
"What consequences?"
The old Denzel pointed toward the sphere.
"Every world he abandoned still exists."
Denzel stared.
"What?"
"When you stopped resetting reality, you didn’t destroy the worlds."
"Then where are they?"
"Here."
The sphere pulsed.
Thousands of lights appeared.
Each one was a world.
Each one contained people.
Each one contained an Elena.
Denzel felt his stomach tighten.
"They’re trapped."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because you created them."
Denzel shook his head.
"I didn’t know."
"That’s why you’re here."
A loud crack echoed through the chamber.
One of the worlds inside the sphere began collapsing.
Denzel instinctively stepped forward.
"Wait."
The old Denzel looked at him.
"What are you going to do?"
Denzel stopped.
His hands clenched.
He could feel the world.
Millions of lives.
A war.
A city burning.
A child crying.
An Elena screaming.
Everything was suddenly inside his awareness.
The old instinct surged through him.
Fix it.
Save it.
Change it.
Denzel closed his eyes.
"No."
The old Denzel watched him.
"You’re going to let them die?"
Denzel’s jaw tightened.
"I don’t know."
"That’s not an answer."
"No."
Denzel opened his eyes.
"It’s the truth."
He looked at the collapsing world.
"I don’t know what the right choice is."
The old Denzel smiled.
"Good."
Denzel frowned.
"Why does everyone keep saying that?"
"Because for the first time, you’re not pretending certainty is the same thing as wisdom."
The world continued collapsing.
Denzel watched.
He didn’t interfere.
The light disappeared.
He felt the loss.
It hurt.
But he didn’t reach for it.
Then another light appeared.
A world stabilized.
Then another.
Then another.
Denzel stared.
"What happened?"
The old Denzel looked toward the sphere.
"Nothing."
"Then why are they stabilizing?"
The old Denzel’s smile vanished.
"That’s the problem."
Denzel turned.
"What problem?"
The entire facility shook.
The copies outside began screaming.
Elena grabbed Denzel’s arm.
Something was moving inside the sphere.
Not a world.
Something between them.
A black shape traveled through the lights.
It passed from one world to another.
Every world it touched went dark.
Denzel stared.
"What is that?"
The old Denzel stepped away from the glass.
"I was hoping you wouldn’t see it."
"Tell me."
"It’s the reason we couldn’t leave."
Denzel’s expression hardened.
"What is it?"
The old Denzel looked at Elena.
Then back at him.
"The thing that was watching you before you were born."
Denzel remembered the faceless figure.
The first boundary opening.
The voice.
You were the first world.
His heart began beating faster.
"It followed me."
"No."
The old Denzel shook his head.
"You followed it."
The black shape stopped.
A pair of enormous eyes opened inside the sphere.
Denzel recognized them.
The same eyes from the white space.
The same presence that had waited beyond every boundary.
Elena stepped closer to Denzel.
"Is that the thing?"
The old Denzel nodded.
"Yes."
Denzel stared at it.
"What does it want?"
The old Denzel’s voice dropped.
"To become real."
The sphere cracked.
A hand pushed through from the inside.
Then another.
The worlds around it began disappearing.
Denzel stepped forward.
"No."
The hand stopped.
The entire facility went silent.
The creature’s voice filled the chamber.
"Denzel."
He froze.
It knew his name.
"You were supposed to remain asleep."
Denzel looked up.
"Who are you?"
The creature laughed.
The sound came from every world at once.
"I am what you imagined before you learned to imagine."
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?"
"I was here before your first thought."
The old Denzel looked terrified.
For the first time, Denzel understood why.
The creature wasn’t another version of him.
It wasn’t a creation.
It wasn’t a memory.
It was something that existed before Denzel’s existence.
Something that had watched him create reality.
Something that had waited for him to become aware.
The creature pushed farther through the sphere.
"I gave you the first command."
Denzel remembered.
Begin again.
"You told me to begin your life."
"No."
The creature smiled.
"I told you to begin mine."
Denzel’s fists tightened.
"And now?"
The creature’s eyes moved toward Elena.
"Now I need something you have."
Denzel stepped in front of her.
"What?"
The creature answered.
"Her choice."
Elena froze.
Denzel’s expression hardened.
"No."
The creature laughed.
"You still don’t understand."
"Then explain."
"I cannot enter your world."
"Why?"
"Because I have no choice of my own."
Denzel stared.
The creature continued.
"You created Elena to be free."
Elena’s eyes widened.
"And?"
"Her choice can give me what you never could."
Denzel felt the meaning settle into place.
The creature didn’t want his power.
It didn’t want his memories.
It didn’t want the Crown.
It wanted Elena’s ability to choose.
The one thing Denzel had spent countless lives trying to protect.
The creature smiled.
"Give her to me."
Denzel looked at Elena.
She was afraid.
But she didn’t step away.
Instead, she took his hand.
And spoke quietly.
"No."
The sphere stopped shaking.
The creature went silent.
Denzel looked at her.
Elena squeezed his hand.
"I choose myself."
The creature’s eyes widened.
For the first time, it looked afraid.
Then the entire sphere began to crack.
And every world inside it woke up.
