Chapter 212: Experiment
The white space shattered.
Denzel fell.
There was no ground beneath him.
No sky.
No direction.
Only fragments of memories rushing past.
A city.
A woman.
A Crown.
A child.
A thousand versions of himself.
Then everything stopped.
Denzel opened his eyes.
He was standing in a field.
Grass moved beneath a warm breeze.
The sky was blue.
Clouds drifted lazily overhead.
Nothing was broken.
Nothing was burning.
Nothing was trying to kill him.
Elena stood beside him.
The Silence was gone.
Denzel looked around.
"This is different."
Elena nodded.
"Very."
Denzel crouched and touched the grass.
It was real.
Cold soil pressed beneath his fingers.
He could smell rain somewhere in the distance.
Birds were singing.
A river flowed nearby.
Denzel stood.
"Where are we?"
A voice answered from behind him.
"Home."
Denzel turned.
The faceless figure stood several meters away.
It no longer looked faceless.
It had a face now.
Denzel’s face.
But older.
Not the tired version.
Not the first Denzel.
Not any version he’d seen before.
It looked exactly like him.
Only empty.
Denzel stared.
"You."
The figure nodded.
"Me."
Elena moved closer to Denzel.
"Who are you?"
The figure looked at her.
"I am what existed before Denzel."
Denzel’s expression hardened.
"That’s impossible."
"It shouldn’t be."
"Then explain."
The figure looked toward the horizon.
"Look."
Denzel followed its gaze.
A city appeared in the distance.
Not suddenly.
It formed.
Buildings rose from the ground.
Roads stretched between them.
People appeared in the streets.
Cars moved.
Lights turned on.
The entire city came into existence within seconds.
Denzel watched.
"What is this?"
"Your first thought."
Denzel frowned.
"My first thought was a city?"
"No."
The figure looked at him.
"Your first thought was that something should exist."
Denzel stared at the city.
"And reality answered."
"Yes."
Elena stepped forward.
"Then Denzel didn’t create reality."
The figure shook its head.
"Reality created Denzel."
Denzel felt something cold move through him.
"Why?"
"Because reality needed somewhere to exist."
Denzel said nothing.
The figure continued.
"You were not born."
"What?"
"You were assembled."
The field disappeared.
Denzel was suddenly standing inside a dark chamber.
There was nothing except a single sphere floating in the center.
It was tiny.
Barely larger than a marble.
But inside it was light.
Denzel recognized it.
Himself.
The sphere pulsed.
Once.
Twice.
Then a voice came from it.
"I want to exist."
Denzel stared.
"That was me?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Before time."
The sphere expanded.
The chamber became filled with light.
Denzel watched as the first boundary formed.
Then space.
Then distance.
Then matter.
Everything emerged from the sphere.
Stars.
Worlds.
Life.
And finally—
A human being.
Denzel.
The first body opened its eyes.
He looked around.
Confused.
Alone.
Then a second figure appeared.
Elena.
She looked exactly as she did now.
Denzel watched the two of them meet.
There was no grand declaration.
No prophecy.
No command.
They simply looked at each other.
The first Denzel smiled.
Elena smiled back.
Denzel swallowed.
"So she existed from the beginning."
"Yes."
"Why?"
The figure looked at Elena.
"Because you needed a witness."
"A witness to what?"
"Your existence."
Denzel looked at the first version of himself.
He understood something.
The first Denzel hadn’t created Elena because he wanted to possess her.
He had created her because he was terrified of being alone.
The thought hurt more than he expected.
"What happened?"
The figure answered.
"He became afraid."
"Of what?"
"That everything he created would disappear."
The scene changed.
The first Denzel stood in the middle of a city.
People were dying.
Buildings collapsed.
The sky split open.
Reality was unstable.
Elena ran toward him.
"Denzel!"
He turned.
She reached him.
"We have to leave."
He shook his head.
"I can fix it."
"You can’t."
"I created it."
"That doesn’t mean you control it."
He looked at her.
The scene froze.
Denzel watched himself staring at Elena.
Then the first Denzel spoke.
"I don’t want to lose you."
Elena’s expression softened.
"You won’t."
"You don’t know that."
"No."
She reached for his hand.
"But you can’t stop every ending."
The memory moved again.
Denzel watched as the first world collapsed.
He watched Elena die.
He watched himself scream.
Then reality reset.
Denzel stared.
"That’s when it started."
The figure nodded.
"He rebuilt the world."
"Again."
"Yes."
"And again."
"Yes."
Denzel watched hundreds of resets.
Thousands.
Millions.
Every world changed slightly.
Different cities.
Different wars.
Different lives.
But Elena always returned.
And every time she died, Denzel reset everything.
Elena beside him finally whispered.
"He couldn’t let me go."
Denzel looked at her.
"No."
"He loved me."
"Yes."
"But he was afraid."
Denzel nodded.
"Yes."
The figure watched them.
"Eventually, the fear became stronger than the love."
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
"That’s when the black-eyed one appeared."
"No."
The figure shook its head.
"He appeared much earlier."
Denzel frowned.
"Then what was he?"
"The first consequence."
Denzel looked back at the memories.
He saw the black-eyed version standing beside the first Denzel.
Not separate.
Not independent.
Connected.
Like a shadow.
"You created him because you couldn’t accept your own fear."
"Yes."
"And the Crown?"
"Your attempt to contain it."
Denzel looked toward the endless memories.
"And the Silence?"
"Your attempt to erase it."
Denzel was quiet.
Everything connected.
Every enemy.
Every failure.
Every version.
They weren’t random.
They were pieces of him.
But something still bothered him.
"Then who are you?"
The figure looked at him.
"I am what came before the fear."
Denzel frowned.
"The part of me before I became afraid?"
"No."
The figure stepped closer.
"I am the part that existed before you were capable of fear."
Denzel stared.
"You."
The figure nodded.
"The first consciousness."
"The thing that wanted to exist."
"Yes."
"Then why did you become this?"
The figure looked down at its hands.
"Because you separated yourself."
Denzel’s expression changed.
"You mean..."
"You divided yourself into everything you couldn’t carry."
The figure gestured toward the sky.
"The Crown carried memory."
It pointed toward the horizon.
"The Silence carried absence."
Then toward Denzel.
"The black-eyed one carried fear."
"And you?"
The figure smiled.
"I carried the beginning."
Denzel stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means I remember what you were before you became Denzel."
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
"And what was I?"
The figure stepped closer.
"Nothing."
Elena stiffened.
Denzel didn’t move.
"Nothing?"
"Not a person."
The figure’s voice remained calm.
"Not a god."
"Not a creator."
"Not even consciousness as you understand it."
Denzel looked at his hands.
"Then what was I?"
"A question."
Silence.
Denzel looked up.
"A question?"
The figure nodded.
"Reality asked whether it could become something."
"And I was the answer."
"No."
The figure smiled.
"You were the question that answered itself."
The world around them began shaking.
Elena grabbed Denzel’s hand.
"What’s happening?"
The figure looked toward the horizon.
"The first world is ending again."
Denzel turned.
The sky was cracking.
Buildings began disappearing.
The river flowed backward.
People froze.
The same collapse he’d seen countless times began repeating.
Denzel looked at the figure.
"Stop it."
"I can’t."
"You created it."
"No."
The figure looked directly into his eyes.
"You did."
Denzel clenched his fists.
The old instinct returned.
Fix it.
Save it.
Change it.
His power stirred.
Light formed around his hands.
Elena noticed.
"Denzel."
He looked at her.
She shook her head.
"You don’t have to."
Denzel looked at the collapsing world.
His hands trembled.
For a moment, he wanted to reach into reality.
He could feel every fracture.
Every dying person.
Every possible correction.
He could fix all of it.
He knew how.
He had done it millions of times.
Then he remembered the first Denzel’s words.
You remember without turning memory into an excuse to interfere.
Denzel slowly lowered his hands.
The power disappeared.
The world continued collapsing.
Elena squeezed his hand.
"Are you sure?"
Denzel watched the first world disappear.
"No."
He swallowed.
"But I’m choosing not to."
The figure smiled.
"Then you finally understand."
Denzel looked at him.
"Understand what?"
"Why you had to come back."
The world disappeared.
Darkness surrounded them.
Then a single light appeared.
A doorway.
Denzel stared at it.
"What is that?"
"Your choice."
"Where does it lead?"
"Forward."
Denzel looked at Elena.
She smiled.
"Together?"
He nodded.
"Together."
They walked toward the doorway.
But before Denzel could step through, the figure spoke.
"Wait."
Denzel turned.
"What?"
The figure looked at him seriously.
"There is one thing you still don’t know."
Denzel frowned.
"What?"
The figure pointed toward the doorway.
"You aren’t returning to Earth."
Denzel stopped.
"Then where?"
The figure’s expression changed.
"To the world you created after you stopped resetting reality."
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
"The stable world."
"Yes."
"That’s Earth."
"No."
The figure shook his head.
"You called it Earth."
Denzel felt his stomach tighten.
"But it isn’t."
The doorway began opening.
Beyond it was a city.
Denzel recognized the streets.
The rain.
The bookstore.
The people.
The exact place where he had returned.
But something was wrong.
The city was empty.
No cars.
No people.
No lights.
Just silence.
Elena stepped closer.
"Where did everyone go?"
Denzel stared through the doorway.
Then he noticed something written across the pavement.
Not a warning.
Not a command.
A name.
His name.
Denzel.
Underneath it was another sentence.
THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR ITS CREATOR.
Denzel looked at the figure.
"What did I create?"
The figure didn’t answer.
Denzel turned toward Elena.
She was staring into the empty city.
Then the voice came.
Not from the doorway.
Not from the figure.
From inside Denzel’s own mind.
Welcome back.
Denzel’s expression hardened.
A second voice followed.
Elena’s.
We have been waiting for you.
Elena looked at him.
"I didn’t say that."
Denzel slowly looked toward the city.
Every window lit up at once.
One by one.
Until the entire skyline was glowing.
And behind every window stood a person.
Every single one of them looked like Denzel.
The first one stepped through the doorway.
Then another.
Then another.
Thousands of them.
All staring at him.
All wearing the same expression.
Denzel tightened his grip around Elena’s hand.
The first Denzel’s voice echoed behind him one final time.
"Now you know what the first world really was."
Denzel looked at the endless copies.
"What?"
The answer came quietly.
"Your experiment."
The doorway slammed shut behind them.
And every Denzel in the city smiled.
