Chapter 336 - 315: Full-Band Jamming
The giant tower’s defenses had already been drastically weakened from the heavy damage. In addition, the Kinetic Energy Bullet fired by the Electromagnetic Cannon was simply too fast. It broke straight through the tower’s defensive field and struck its base, inflicting massive damage in an instant.
Even the Consciousness Field that had enveloped the center of New York City was instantly weakened.
’It’s working!’
Seeing this, the Legion Commander was ecstatic, slamming his fist against the armored vehicle’s hull.
"Keep firing the Electromagnetic Cannon! Self-propelled artillery, prepare to fire!"
Fres’s confidence surged upon receiving the order. After readjusting the Electromagnetic Cannon’s parameters, he immediately slammed the button.
BOOM!
Another shot, like a searing meteor, launched forth. It tore another huge chunk of flesh from the tower’s already savaged base. The small section of the wound that had begun to heal was ripped open again, its matter completely vaporized by the intense heat.
BOOM! BOOM!
A series of massive explosions echoed out. This time, the self-propelled artillery shells broke straight through the defensive field and slammed into the giant tower, blossoming into fiery explosions.
The giant tower’s defensive field was completely gone!
A shell made of flesh and bone could hardly withstand a heavy weapons bombardment, after all. Now, it was pockmarked with massive, horrifying craters.
The anti-aircraft machine guns, which had been mowing down zombies, abruptly swiveled, aimed at the rows of eyes on the upper part of the tower, and opened fire.
A torrent of bullets flew upward, instantly riddling the eyes with holes.
The giant tower let out waves of shrill, agonizing wails, clearly having suffered another grievous blow.
Freed from the suppression of the Consciousness Field, the host of Symbiote zombies tilted their heads back and roared, stunning the surrounding hordes of lesser zombies that were charging in.
These lesser hordes, also freed from the Consciousness Field’s control, devolved into a disorganized rabble and began to scatter. The Symbiote zombies, however, showed looks of greedy excitement. They rushed toward the giant tower, eager to devour its trunk and claim a piece of the spoils.
Without waiting for the Legion Commander’s order, Fres slammed the launch button again. The Electromagnetic Railgun’s final projectile shot out, tearing away another chunk of flesh, dozens of meters in diameter, from the tower’s base.
All three Electromagnetic Cannon rounds had now been fired. The portion of the giant tower’s base still supporting its immense weight was now less than ten meters thick. It was about to be completely severed!
The host of Symbiotes had already swarmed the giant tower, tearing and gnawing at it ravenously. The tower could no longer absorb and integrate them. Instead, they could now exploit the tower’s nature, devouring its flesh to strengthen their own constructed bodies.
The giant tower was still coiling and twisting, extending tentacles to try and drive the Symbiote zombies off, but it had little strength left. Its tentacles were clumsy and weak; the Symbiote zombies swarmed them and began to devour them on the spot.
On the human side, the self-propelled artillery continued their barrage, with even tanks and armored vehicles moving in for close-range fire. Between the rain of shells, the violent explosions, and the gnawing of the Symbiotes, the final ten-meter-thick section of the tower’s base was finally obliterated.
The entire giant tower was now completely severed at its base!
This time, the giant tower didn’t even let out a wail. Like a felled redwood, it began to slowly topple over.
The fall of the tower—a thousand meters tall and dozens of meters in diameter—would wipe out several city blocks. Seeing this, the Legion Commander immediately shouted another order:
"Bombard its upper section! Make it fall the other way!"
Shell after shell detonated against the tower’s upper section. The force of the explosions immediately pushed the swaying behemoth in the opposite direction.
The twisting, coiling tower crashed down on its other side, smashing skyscrapers and magnificent buildings into a field of ruins. Billowing clouds of dust rose up, obscuring the entire battlefield.
Both humans and zombies were swallowed by the thick fog of dust, completely blind to what was happening.
Finally, after a few minutes, the dust settled. It revealed the Symbiote zombies still standing atop the tower’s wreckage, and on the other side, the cautiously waiting Salvation Army troops.
Zombies and humans stared at each other across the battlefield. They looked at the toppled tower, no longer feeling even a hint of the Consciousness Field’s suppression. The tower’s remains didn’t so much as twitch.
"Did we win?"
It was impossible to tell who asked the question, but in the next second, tens of thousands of humans and Symbiote zombies erupted in a cheer:
"Victory!"
"We finally killed that disgusting thing!"
"Hahaha, it looked like a bent dick! I’ve been wanting to chop that thing off for ages!"
"The Symbiotes will conquer this world! We will defeat the Destructive!"
’We won. We finally won. Now I can finally hold my head up high in front of the Commander.’
The center of New York City was electric. Humans and zombies alike were cheering their hearts out.
Seen from the air, the fallen tower looked like a legendary giant, hunted and slain by the masses. Now, the insect-like intelligent beings were preparing to feast upon its corpse.
But even as they celebrated, the human soldiers and the Symbiote zombies were secretly eyeing one another, gauging their reactions.
The Symbiote zombies were quietly converging on the human army’s position. For their part, the humans showed no intention of unloading their weapons or engaging the safeties.
As expected, the Hannibal Symbiote was the first to break. Thousands of Symbiote zombies suddenly fell silent, then charged toward the human forces.
The charging Symbiote zombies simultaneously released a powerful Consciousness Field, attempting to suppress the human army. At the same time, the other strongest Symbiotes attacked the human forces from different directions, their eyes gleaming with predatory hunger as they sought out prey to devour.
Having feasted on the giant tower’s flesh, the Symbiote zombies were more agile, their thoughts sharper. They had figured it out long ago: once the tower was gone, their number one enemy would instantly become the humans.
In New York City, in this "pure land" free from the tower, there could only be one master.
Besides, the humans’ power rested solely on that one Electromagnetic Railgun. Once they seized it, the towers in other cities across the world would be just as vulnerable. Then, they could defeat all the other towers and become the strongest Symbiote.
To put it another way: whoever controlled the Electromagnetic Railgun could defeat the other towers, become the strongest Symbiote on the planet, and rule over all!
As for the humans? "Those not of our kind are bound to have different hearts." The Symbiote zombies had never entertained the idea of peaceful coexistence. It was all just a duplicitous scheme, a way of using the humans for their own ends.
’But why wasn’t there any panic on the humans’ faces?’
The Symbiote zombies were just about to crash into the human ranks, a distance so close that firearms would be useless. Just then, the Legion Commander gestured to a vehicle behind him. It was equipped with a radar dish and looked like a broadcast van.
In the next instant, a storm of full-spectrum electromagnetic jamming erupted from the van, sweeping over the center of New York City like a flood.
Unlike the tower’s Consciousness Field suppression, this was crude, brute-force jamming. It flooded all frequency bands with garbage signals, making any form of signal transmission impossible.
The Symbiote zombies that had been charging so menacingly toward the Salvation Army all let out a piercing shriek. Their faces went slack. Some thrashed about wildly, while others devolved into common zombies, wandering aimlessly. The signal transmission between every individual Symbiote was severed, instantly turning the entire collective into thoughtless simpletons.
The Symbiotes could never have imagined that besides the tower and the legendary Destructive, humans were also capable of suppressing their collective consciousness!
"Clean up the battlefield. Execute Plan C," the Legion Commander said coldly. "And make it clean."
