Chapter 257 - 244: From God to Man
After taking out a few zombies, a clear patch opened up below. Shen Feng vaulted over the railing, dropped to the flight of stairs below, and vaulted again, soon finding himself above the tenth-floor landing.
The zombies were especially thick here, making it impossible to descend any further. Shen Feng simply rested his gun on the railing and, his face a mask, kept firing.
One after another, the zombies howled and charged, only to have their heads blown apart before they tumbled back down the stairs.
The landing below was piled high with the bodies of zombies whose brains had been obliterated. The staircase had become a road paved with the dead.
With more zombies charging down from above, Shen Feng slammed open a door beside the staircase and rushed into a hallway. He quickly bolted the door shut, blocking the zombies from the stairwell outside.
"ROAR—"
"CRASH... CRASH..."
The zombies began to frantically slam against the hallway door. The glass pane set in its center quickly shattered; it would only be a few seconds before they broke through and charged in!
Down the hallway stood many figures, their backs to him, their heads bowed. At the sound from behind, they instantly snapped their eyes open and raised their heads as if waking from a dream. Revealing savage expressions, they charged right at Shen Feng!
Shen Feng charged forward with his Shotgun, pulling the trigger as he advanced like a ruthless killing machine, blowing the heads off the approaching zombies one by one.
For the nearest zombie, he even pressed the barrel right against its face before pulling the trigger.
At the same time, he was rapidly observing the reactions and characteristics of the surrounding zombies, committing everything to memory.
Shen Feng quickly reached the end of the hallway. Behind him, the wood-framed glass door shattered completely, and the zombies from the stairwell began to pour in frantically!
Having taken out dozens of them, Shen Feng was out of shotgun shells. He unscrewed the suppressor from his Shotgun, tossed the now-useless hunk of metal aside, and drew his suppressed pistol. He made his way to the elevator bay, picking off zombies with headshots as he went.
By now, his muscles were bulging and his skin had petrified, hardening as he fully shifted into his combat form. He lunged at an elevator, pried the doors open with his bare hands, and revealed the dark shaft within.
Looking down, he saw the elevator car was on the first floor.
The nearest few zombies were less than ten seconds away. Shen Feng didn’t hesitate. He leaped into the shaft, grabbing the thick suspension cable with his petrified palms and fingers and sliding rapidly downward.
His palms sent sparks flying from the cable as he slid. He landed heavily on the roof of the car below with a loud THUD, then kicked open the steel escape hatch and dropped inside.
Only after dropping in did he realize it was more crowded than a rush-hour bus—it was packed full of trapped zombies!
The zombies abruptly awoke, howling as they reached for Shen Feng, trying to tear him to pieces.
Countless hands gripped him all over, trying to drag him down. The closest ones snapped their jaws, gnawing away bits of stone dust from his petrified shoulders and neck.
Fortunately, while stronger than ordinary humans, these zombies weren’t as powerful as the ones he’d faced on the rooftop. Shen Feng could still move.
His eyes wide, he forced the pistol up to neck level. Twisting his body, he rapidly pulled the trigger, blasting through the heads of the zombies just inches away.
He emptied the magazine. A ricochet even grazed his body, leaving a shallow wound. But now, every zombie inside the elevator car had been put down with a headshot.
He shoved the piles of corpses aside, went to the door, and pried it open just enough to squeeze through.
Just as he got out, he heard a series of THUDS from above. The zombies that had been chasing him on the tenth floor were now plummeting into the elevator shaft one after another, like falling rain!
Luckily, the hallway outside the elevator was empty. Shen Feng quickly reloaded with a fresh magazine, shouldered his grime-and-blood-stained backpack, and rushed out the building’s main entrance.
A few zombies were wandering the street. Seeing Shen Feng, they shrieked and immediately lunged at him.
Shen Feng didn’t even turn his head. He sprinted right past them, heading for a building at the end of the street.
He had glanced around from the rooftop earlier and spotted it—the tallest building in the vicinity was that skyscraper!
To get an overview of the situation in Mexico City, that would be the best vantage point.
Besides, there were no signs of zombies on that building’s rooftop.
There weren’t many zombies on the streets, but that skyscraper was an office building, so there were bound to be plenty of them inside.
While running, Shen Feng turned and headshot the three zombies giving chase. Then he stopped for a second, ripped off his shoes, threw them aside, and continued sprinting forward in just his socks.
The conspicuous sound of his footsteps on the empty street vanished. A few zombies in the distance didn’t even glance his way. Apparently, from that far away, they couldn’t identify him as human without the sound.
Finally, Shen Feng burst into the office building, took out two zombies in the lobby, and made his way to the elevators.
He pried open the elevator doors. The car, stopped on the first floor, held no zombies, just a few decaying corpses with multiple bone fractures. It seemed they were victims who died when the elevator lost control and plummeted.
Shen Feng climbed up through the car’s broken roof, found the steel cable, and began his slow ascent.
This route was much more difficult, but at least there wouldn’t be any zombies.
Plus, there were steel beams along the elevator shaft where he could stand and rest.
Although his mutated body possessed immense strength, he wasn’t a tireless perpetual motion machine. After all, the guns, ammo, and supplies on his back were extremely heavy.
After climbing more than twenty floors, he was already feeling fatigued. He swung over to a nearby ledge to stand and rest for a moment.
He took a bottle of purified water from his pack and chugged it down, then took out two beef tacos he had brought along and scarfed them down. The fragrant beef and peppers ignited a warmth in his stomach that spread through his entire body. Feeling his strength slowly return, Shen Feng immediately resumed his climb.
In the deep, dark elevator shaft, the only sound was Shen Feng’s climbing. The silence was terrifying.
Shen Feng climbed for a while longer. ’I should probably play some music to lighten the mood,’ he thought, and then said aloud:
"Jingwei, help me..."
He caught himself and said no more. Instead, he controlled the silicon-based framework in his chest to play a soft Mexican guitar tune and continued his climb in silence.
After the song had played through a few times, and after a few more rests, he finally reached the top floor.
He took a leap and slammed himself violently against the elevator doors.
"CLANG!"
The elevator doors were knocked off their tracks, and Shen Feng landed heavily on the floor.
He was in a hallway. Two dormant zombies, one at either end, immediately woke up and lunged at him.
Shen Feng got to his feet, expressionlessly grabbed both zombies by the neck, and hurled them backward into the open elevator shaft.
A moment later, the thud of their landing echoed up from below. Only then did he dust off his hands and proceed forward.
The top floor of the office building was luxuriously decorated. There were some zombies, but most of them were locked inside the offices along the hallway, likely dealt with by the people who had evacuated the building.
Walking barefoot now, Shen Feng made almost no sound. He even held his breath, so he didn’t alert any of the zombies locked away in the offices.
He soon found a small staircase and a door leading to the rooftop. He opened the door and finally stepped out onto it.
Unlike the last building, this rooftop was flat and empty. There were no zombies in sight.
As the tallest building in the area, it offered a panoramic view of the entire western district of Mexico City. From here, the streets, the buildings, and even the wandering zombies below were all in plain sight.
Shen Feng looked out at the city of ruins and couldn’t help but sigh, his mind filled with images of the bustling Mexico City from his original world.
’The plague treats everyone equally,’ he thought. ’Military, gangsters, rich officials, common citizens—it makes no distinction.’
He quickly circled the western side of the rooftop and moved to the eastern edge to look toward the center of Mexico City.
The instant he saw the sight, Shen Feng’s pupils contracted violently. A vast shadow was reflected in his gaze, and the hair on his entire body stood on end. He couldn’t stop himself from blurting out:
"Holy shit!"
